“The Languages of Magic: Transform Reality through Words, Magical Symbols, and Sigils” by Toby Chappell is not for those looking for a light, easy breezy discussion on language or magic. However, if you’re ready to buckle down, focus, and do the reading, you will find an eye-opening discourse on transforming the nature of reality. Yes, seriously.
Chappell goes to great lengths to discuss and explore linguistics and semiotics, the study of signs, symbols, and how humans make and interpret meaning, and how it all relates to magic. The author makes the case that we treat the world as a partner in communication, therefore operative magic works because it too is communication with the world. “The Languages of Magic” explores magical communication in the ancient practices of the Greek, sigil magic, runes, and others. From there Chappell uses more modern schools of magic as case studies, such as Thelema, Temple of Set, Chaos Magic, and New Thought.
If you are looking to nerd out and dive deep into the mechanics of magic, “The Languages of Magic” by Toby Chappell is the book for you!
