I’ve been thinking about Halloween a lot lately. Obviously, the main reason is the holiday’s rapid approach, but I also received a review copy of the Halloween themed “Trick or Treat Tarot” by Barbara Moore and Jonathan Hunt. The introduction in the included guidebook has a wonderful, but brief, history of the holiday, the history of tarot, what Halloween means to people, and more. It made me wonder how Moore felt about the holiday personally. This then made me ponder about the nature of Halloween and my feelings about it. Then I remembered this is a tarot deck review, not an essay. So, I’ll be unloading all my Halloween baggage on my Patreon, and here I will be reviewing the “Trick or Treat Tarot.” One more little aside, my Patrons got a sneak peek at this deck already because I used it for my October Tarot Forecast. Just saying…..
The “Trick or Treat Tarot” is a 78-card Halloween-tastic take on the traditional Rider-Waite-Smith. It keeps all the major arcana, along with the traditional swords, wands, cups, and pentacles of the minor arcana. However, Moore, with an assist of amazing artwork by Hunt, reimagines the world of the traditional tarot through the lens of Halloween. In the deck you’ll find all your favorite creatures and haunted locations, along with obvious references to famous spooky characters from television, film, and literature. Hunt’s illustrations are creepy, but whimsical. The artwork for the back of the cards is fantastic!
This is the latest iteration of the “Trick or Treat Tarot,” now in a traditional size, with a hard cardboard and magnetic box, and a palm-sized, full-color, guidebook that provides meanings and backgrounds for each card in the deck along with suggest tarot spreads.
If you are a fan of everything Halloween, whether you read tarot or not, the “Trick or Treat Tarot” IS FOR YOU!
