The Hoodoo Tarot Workbook

In 2020 I reviewed Tayannah Lee McQuillar’s “Hoodoo Tarot Deck.” It really stood out amongst the current tarot deck offerings and still does. It made my Favorite Things list that year and I recently sang its praises in my YouTube video comparing counterfeit tarot decks to the originals. The “Hoodoo Tarot” is not only a well-executed deck, but with its in depth look at the history and traditions of hoodoo it is an educational resource as well as a divinatory tool.

That’s why I was hopping up and down excited to see the release of the “The Hoodoo Tarot Workbook: Rootwork, Rituals, and Divination.” from Tayannah Lee McQuillar. Let me stress how much I DID NOT CARE what this book contained, I just HAD TO HAVE IT. However, now that I have a copy, shall we discuss what’s inside?

McQuillar discusses the history and spirituality of hoodoo that includes an in depth look into the relationship of hoodoo and early Christianity and the influence of the Bible on hoodoo practices. The natural world is explored and McQuillar shares some of the plants that are incorporated into hoodoo. There is also a wonderful section that provides an introductory look at hoodoo divinatory practices.

Of course, this is “The Hoodoo TAROT WORKBOOK,” so ample space is dedicated to the “Hoodoo Tarot Deck.” McQuillar offers up 11 new spreads designed to be used with the “Hoodoo Tarot Deck.” She provides rituals and reflections on several of the card categories of the deck.

“The Hoodoo Tarot Workbook” by Tayannah Lee McQuillar serves as a great introduction to hoodoo, but I would add to unlock its maximum potential you should use it along side McQuillar’s outstanding “Hoodoo Tarot Deck.”
