How does Inner Traditions decide what books get the super sexy publishing treatment? I ask because if someone told me a book about ancient farming would be getting the all-star Inner Traditions treatment, I would have said they had no clue as to what they were talking about. Yet here I am, gazing at “The Cunning Farmer: Agrarian Magical Practices, Mythology, and Folklore” by Todd Elliot, in all it’s oversized, hardcover, full color throughout glory.
To say that “The Cunning Farmer” is a beautiful book is an understatement. Do people keep books about ancient farming magic and folklore as coffee table books? If it’s this one, they do. I can’t stress how satisfying it is to flip through this book. Okay, enough about appearances, let’s discuss the actual content.
Elliot provides a comprehensive look at the physical labor and magical pursuit, that is farming. The book explores how to use nature-based magic to reconnect with nature for gardening and farming. In “The Cunning Farmer” you’ll find Western esotericism, Taoist principles, alchemy, Kabbalah, Reiki, and shamanism along with prayers, sacrifices, dances, and rituals all to connect with sacred forces, the gods, and nature spirits. It’s a fascinating examination of the multitude of ways our ancestors practiced magic that coincides with nature.
With a suggested retail of $65, “The Cunning Farmer” by Todd Elliot is an investment. However, if you’re fascinated by the subject matter, it’s worth it.
