I’ve always had a fascination with symbols, and that has only increased now that I make talismans for people. In my experience, many books on the topic are either unexciting, straight up dictionaries or encyclopedias (useful, but not a fun read) or dense academic, scholarly endeavors that are hard for to use for reference when doing personal works. That’s why I fell hard and fast for Amy Donnelly’s book “Practical Symbols: Runes and Sigils for Holistic Wellbeing.”

Donnelly has put together a practical and accessible book that will work for just about anyone with an interest in symbols, particularly for wellbeing. “Practical Symbols” offers the history and tradition of symbols, while acknowledging the way symbols evolve, either due to outside forces or practitioner need. It makes for an engaging and inspiring read. I found myself bubbling with ideas the more I read.
With the focus on holistic wellbeing, the books has 7 chapters: Symbols for Wellness, Symbols for Physical Wellness, Symbols for Sabbats, Symbols for the Moon, Symbols for Special Occasions, Symbols for Careers, and Practical Sigils. There are clear, well rendered illustrations of the symbols by Viki Lester.
“Practical Symbols” by Amy Donnelly is an amazing resource for anyone, from magical dabbler to serious occultist.
