Readers who have been around a while know that I’m a lady who loves her some Nigel Pennick. He’s like a Claude Lecouteux to me (real Buffets readers will know what that means). Pennick always finds an unexpected angle in his research and his latest book “Fortuna: The Sacred & Profane Faces of Luck” turned out to be no exception.
Did I expect discussion about the goddess Fortuna and her various aspects? Yes. Did I get that? Yes. However, did I expect this compact 144-page book to quickly roll into the long history of and connections between divination and gambling? No. Am I thrilled that it did? Hell yeah. The close relationship between divination and luck allows Pennick to explore throwing bones to rolling dice, and how that flows into sacred geometry and the dice we use for tabletop RPGs. In “Fortuna” gamblers lucky charms evolve into protective symbols, and gentlemen’s wagers become today’s charity runs.
I can’t imagine someone who couldn’t find something of interest in Nigel Pennick’s “Fortuna.” Goddesses, gambling, divination, and more come together spectacularly in this book.
