The Ofrenda Oracle

Most of you are aware that I am a lady who loves a good tarot/oracle deck. Well, today we’re discussing a deck that I already suspected I was going to like, but it was full of unique surprises that make it stand out from the crowd. “The Ofrenda Oracle” by Nancy Henderickson and Carrie Paris with artwork by Angelica Castro is a niche deck with wide appeal.

Let’s first address the obvious about the 60 card “Ofrenda Oracle.” Instead of the usual oversized tarot card, this deck conforms to the size of standard playing cards. The card stock is a little flimsy BUT because of the smaller card size, it’s not a problem the way it is with tarot card sized decks. Next, kudos to Angelica Castro. Upon my first thumbing through of the deck I declared to my husband that the illustrations were “100% tattoo worthy.” Castro’s art is colorful, whimsical, thoughtfully designed with the card size in mind, and perfectly channels the themes of the Day of the Dead. I cannot stress enough how much I love this art! This also is a good of point as any to mention that the cards and guide book are in English and Spanish.

Now that we’ve discussed “The Ofrenda Oracle’s” appearance, let’s take look under the hood, because this deck also has a nice interior design. Along with the 60 card deck you get a 136 page, full color, guide book. The book offers a brief introduction to the Day of the Dead and the role of death, families, and culture play in Mexican communities. Once diving into the deck, Henderickson and Paris, explain that if you opt to only use the first 36 cards of the oracle, it can operate as a Lenormand deck. For those unfamiliar, Lenormand is a kind of storytelling divinatory method and “The Ofrenda Oracle” is well suited for it. The other cards in the deck feature Day of the Dead symbolism. If you opt to shuffle all the cards and use the full deck, the guide book offers a few spreads designed to specific needs. And don’t worry, the oracle works just fine for my preferred method, the single card draw.

The spiritual and artistic themes of the Day of the Dead and Mexican culture might not appeal to everyone, but if they do, you NEED “The Ofrenda Oracle.”
