It is no secret that I love an excuse to eat or drink, and thankfully Ulysses Press has given me yet another excuse with “The Horror Movie Night Cookbook: 60 Deliciously Deadly Recipes Inspired By Iconic Slashers, Zombie Films, Psychological Thrillers, Sci-Fi Spooks, & More” by Richard S. Sargent. Honestly, Ulysses Press had me with “The Mama’s Boy Martini.”
I know what you really want to know, what movies does this book cover? You ask. I answer. Sargent has included appetizers, entrees, cocktails, and desserts based on “Scream” AND “Scream 2”, “The Blair Witch Project”, “Poltergeist”, “I Know What You Did Last Summer”, “Identity”, “Dawn of the Dead”, “Crawl”, “The Wicker Man” (the 1973 version), “28 Days Later”, “Piranha”, “The Descent”, “Stir of Echoes”, “Broken Lizard’s Club Dread”, “Psycho” (the 1960 version), “Shaun of the Dead”, “Cujo”, “Halloween”, “Contagion”, “The Ruins”, “Event Horizon”, “The Evil Dead”, “The Conjuring”, “Jaws”, “Bug”, “Night of the Living Dead”, “The Birds”, “Black Christmas”, “Cabin Fever”, and “Tucker and Dale vs. Evil.” That’s a WHOLE LOT of films and they inspired a WHOLE LOT of recipes!
Sargent’s recipe selections are varied, ranging from difficult to super easy. Most of the ingredients are readily available, and true to past cookbook reviews, I had to try out a few recipes. Obviously, I had to try a cocktail recipe. I went with The Shark Bite inspired by “Jaws.” I decided to try it because I already had a bottle of blue Curacao from when I made The Sea After the Storm Dark and Stormy from “The Unofficial Princess Bride Cookbook.” This made an impressive looking cocktail, that would be a hit at any ocean themed get together. It tasted good, but my tip is to top it off with seltzer. It made it taste even better and made “ocean foam.” For a food item I tried out Brown Butter Lemon Popcorn from the What’s Your Favorite Scary Movie Popcorn recipe inspired by the movie “Scream.” I chose this recipe because it’s SUPER easy, it starts with microwave popcorn! I was surprised how good the lemon was with the popcorn! I followed the recipe and ended up accidentally over buttering and over lemoning (yes, it’s a word) the popcorn, but someone paying better attention would probably have avoided that.
“The Horror Movie Night Cookbook” by Richard S. Sargent is a lot of fun for horror enthusiasts and foodies alike!
