I’ve always been against censorship of art and literature. On The Magical Buffet I’ve always highlighted Banned Books Week, as well as other attempts at censorship. This is why when some friends of mine saw “The Banned Books Tarot Deck” they knew they had to purchase it for me.
Needless to say, I was very excited to receive this deck, and enough people who were around when I got the deck expressed interest that I thought everyone might like to read about it!
“The Banned Books Tarot” was designed by Katie Jennings Campbell and illustrated by Matthew Taylor Wilson. The deck follows the 78 card Rider Waite Smith format, with 22 Major Arcana cards, and 56 Minor Arcana cards. Although it should be noted that the Minor Arcana in this deck are tweaked with them being Words, Inkwells, Pens, and Paper, as opposed to the more traditional Wands, Cups, Swords, and Pentacles.

Each card not only has its name on it, but also the name of a banned or challenge book and its author. In the guidebook you’ll find an entry explaining why the book had been found objectionable by some, along with card interpretations and suggested card spreads.
The artwork is bold and vibrant with uncluttered designs.
“The Banned Books Tarot” by Campbell and Wilson is a fun and inspired way to draw attention to the constant threat of censorship of books and works wonderfully as a functional tarot deck. Truly a great deck.
