We have an interesting tarot deck to explore today, “Wise Earth Medicine Tarot” by Lalania Simone. What makes it so interesting? This is a tarot deck that takes a lot of liberties with the classic tarot format that ultimately, I admire, but it may not be for everyone.
“Wise Earth Medicine Tarot” is a beautiful 78 card deck that has metallic green leafing and comes in a sturdy box with a perfectly sized for use guidebook. The art for this deck is wonderful and highlights a wide variety of plants and animals. The back of the cards look so attractive I could imagine entire walls clad in the design.
Simone designed this deck to create “a bridge between the tarot and oracle traditions.” To that end, it was “designed to adhere to the style and structure of the Rider Waite Smith tarot,” however, “The suits have been replaced and renamed with their elements.” Each card in the guidebook has a traditional card interpretation as well as “medicine.” “Wise Earth Medicine Tarot” has medicine being “the innate intelligence of life.”
As a blended bridge deck, it is impressive in its execution. You can easily use this as an oracle deck, using the associations of wildlife on the card as well as the medicine in the guidebook. Now, as a tarot deck, there are a few caveats for the novice tarot reader. If you’re not used to it, the minor arcana suits being renamed by their elements could be a bit confusing. Needing to take a moment to translate Fire to Wands in your head, for example. Also, traditional tarot readers may look to the card art for an indication of what number of the minor arcana you are looking at, and you will rarely find artistic indicators on the cards. That said, each card has text that says, 9 of Earth for example, but the card’s art features a singular cat. None of these are deal breakers, as far as I’m concerned, but they are a few things to think about before making a purchase.
Overall, “Wise Earth Medicine Tarot” is a beautiful, multifunctional deck that is perfect for lovers of the earth looking for a deck outside of the norm.
