I always say that I don’t need to buy spell books, because the magic is inside me. At the end of the day, I’m very bare bones in my magical practice. That said, I own a RIDICULOUS number of books about spells and/or full of spells! When I got offered the chance to review “Ancient Spells and Incantations: Echoes of Magic Through the Ages & Across Cultures” by Enid Baxter Ryce I read the email and thought to myself, nah. However, I did not delete the email about the book. Every time I logged into The Magical Buffet email it was there. I read and reread the description of the book several times. Finally, I just couldn’t take it anymore and I asked Weiser Books to mail it to me.
Not to sound cliché, but “Ancient Spells and Incantations” ensorcelled me on sight. And since the author created the cover art and the illustrations throughout the text, it was by design. In the book Ryce discusses weaving text into her artwork, and even though I know it’s not what it says, it feels like the cover art says, “LOOK AT ME!”

Beautiful illustrations aside, Enid Baxter Ryce has done some impressive research to unearth from the depths of history the poetry of our ancestors attempting to make magic. Translating from Latin and Old English, “Ancient Spells and Incantations” shows the universality of human emotions, regardless of time or place. True to its title, the book is full of spells, but if you read it, you’ll find it is much more.
