Crystals for Karmic Healing

Ever wonder how I decide what books to review? Get in line because I’ve never figured it out. I can tell you why I chose this latest book though. One, it involves crystals. Love them! Two, it features a forward from Judy Hall. This lady knows crystals and I’m quite the fan. You may remember I reviewed and loved her two books, “Crystals and Sacred Sites” and “The Encyclopedia of Crystals”. I figure if she liked this particular book enough to write a forward, it was worth checking out. And if you love crystals, it is. I’m talking about “Crystals for Karmic Healing: Transform Your Future by Releasing Your Past” by Nicholas Pearson.

Karma can be a difficult concept. Modern American culture views it as “what goes around, comes around”, and that’s not entirely inaccurate. However, it also tends to get viewed as something you get to see. Generally, karma is viewed in the span of lifetimes. Your actions in this lifetime decide how evolved you’ll be in the next. Where you’re at now should be teaching you so you can progress in your next life. Pearson concedes that this interpretation of karma is much easier to grasp if you believe in reincarnation. Yet he writes about karma in a way that you can understand it regardless of personal belief system. He speaks of karma not just on an individual level, but addresses it on a planetary level as well.

Pearson approaches crystals, and their properties, with an eye towards karma. “Crystals for Karmic Healing” details over 30 rocks, minerals, and gemstones to utilize when working with karma. Also, the book is a full color beauty with loads of fantastic photos of the crystals. Ideas abound for what to do with these crystals; such as meditations, crystal grids, creating elixirs, and wearing them.

“Crystals for Karmic Healing” may not be for everyone, but if you love crystals and want a new perspective on possible uses for them, this book is for you.

The Student

I’ve got to tell you, there’s another movie I’m going to have to be on the lookout for and perhaps you will be too. “The Student”.

After Venya’s mother receives a call from school reporting her son’s refusal to participate in mixed swimming lessons, she first suspects her teenager of being shy and derides his claim that it is “against his religion.” As Venya is finally exempted by the school’s devout principal, he grows confident that his strict and rigorous study of the Bible gives him the ability to manipulate all forms of authority.

Challenged by a teacher who refuses to consent to his dogma, he sets out to eliminate her and subdue an entire community. At a time when arguments over the teaching of religion in public schools are prominent in the media, this wildly escalating classroom drama — based on a play by German playwright Marius von Mayenburg — serves as a frightening cautionary tale.

Variety says, “At a time when arguments over educational ‘safe spaces’ and belief-based ‘micro-aggressions’ are prominent in the media, this wildly escalating classroom drama — based on a stage work by German playwright Marius von Mayenburg — serves as a frightening cautionary tale. Whether it ultimately comes down for or against unqualified free speech, however, is one of many potential topics of post-screening conversation.”

“The Student” opens in San Francisco this month with more screenings nationwide to follow. You can learn more here.

Meditating with Oprah

So Oprah emailed me about an upcoming event. That’s right, Oprah emails me. We’re tight like that. Okay, maybe it wasn’t Oprah exactly. Perhaps it was someone from OWN Television. But that’s almost like Oprah, right? All right, I’m done being silly. Thanks for sending me the info to pass on to my readers Gemma!

Oprah Winfrey and Deepak Chopra announced on March 13, 2017 the newest “Oprah & Deepak 21-Day Meditation Experience” titled “Hope in Uncertain Times,” open for free registration now at Oprah.com/meditation. This new meditation experience, beginning on Monday, April 10, will help participants use hope as an active force of transformation, and make hope an ally to be relied upon for strength, security, high self-esteem and optimism.

“Chaos can be a prelude to creativity,” said Deepak Chopra. “In these times of seeming confusion, a deep dive into consciousness can help us find the light of hope that we need to begin true transformation. Our next 21 Day meditation experience is timely for this next stage of our evolution.”

“Hope in Uncertain Times,” led by Oprah Winfrey and Deepak Chopra, offers a 20-minute audio meditation each day and a series of thought-provoking reflection questions designed to anchor the teachings with a centering thought and mantra. Through a private, interactive journal feature that is provided, meditators are able to record and view their progress, giving them an invaluable picture of personal growth and development. The meditations are easily accessible from a tablet, computer, or the mobile companion app available in iTunes or Google Play.

Originally launched in 2013, the “Oprah & Deepak 21-Day Meditation Experience” now features a catalogue of 13 different programs with more than seven million participants from over 200 hundred countries around the globe.

Below is an overview of what participants can expect throughout this experience:

Week One: How Hope Can Change Your Reality
Week One will focus on seeing what hope is to each of us, and where it is and is not working in our lives, so that we can begin the process of change. Learning to identify passive, false hope and then discover true hope as a way to create change and believe in oneself sets us on the right path for positive growth.

Week Two: Where Hope Can Take You
Week Two is about hope in action. We learn to start hope from a place of open, accepting awareness and to use intention for a favorable outcome to bring forth and fuel a fulfilling present experience. Instead of relying on the past and pinning hopes on expectations, the challenge is to merge hope with the present moment to prevent repetition of the past. Such hope comes from the deep security of the true self, and that is what we will seek and build upon in Week Two.

Week Three: Bringing Hope to Others
The third week focuses on expanding hope into a wider sphere of influence. Being the embodiment of hope can inspire people wherever they are. By becoming a living example of the power of hope, we become catalysts for engaging that transformative force of hope in others around us. The hope that lives within us becomes a universal wave of hope based on our shared humanity that can lift society through our actions of caring, listening, loving and shared efforts toward common goals.

Crystals: Plain & Simple

Anyone that has been reading The Magical Buffet for a while knows that I love me those rocks, minerals, and gemstones. Generally they’re beautiful AND loads of people attribute benefits to having them, whether wearing them, charging water with them, or meditating with them. If I can have something pretty that might help with something, why the heck not I say.

That brings us to the latest book on crystals that I’ve read, “Crystals: Plain & Simple” by Cass and Janie Jackson. Red Wheel Weiser has been releasing a crap ton of books in the “Plain & Simple” series and honestly, I want to read them all! They cover topics as varied as runes, reincarnation, totems, numerology, and just about everything else. And they’re all in this compact paperback format that fits easily into your purse. I can’t be the only one who always has a book in their purse, can I? Enough about that, let’s talk about “Crystals”.

There are two amazing things about this book. One, it’s 135 pages long and doesn’t seem that long at all. Two, authors Cass and Janie Jackson crammed a lot if information in this book. Way more than 135 pages worth of info. They do a wonderful job of covering more bases than I was expecting. They guide you through shopping for crystals, how to clean and care for your crystals, and how to store them. You’ll also learn about prominent crystals from history and folklore. Then you get to the main event which is exploring individual crystals: their characteristics, their uses, and assorted correspondences.

If I have any criticism it’s just one, there are no color images of the crystals. I’m all for learning, but crystals are pretty and I wouldn’t mind some glossy, full color crystal porn in this, and any other book, about crystals. Just sayin’…..

“Crystals: Plain & Simple” says on the cover, “The Only Book You’ll Ever Need”. This book would provide an excellent base to start your journey learning about crystals, but it is a strong enough book that it could be the only one you’ll ever need.

Pssst……just as an aside, I’m already reading ANOTHER book about crystals. I love them so! Hopefully I’ll have that review for you soonish.

The Transfiguration

I know, long time, no post. My headaches have been particularly bad these past few weeks and when you pair that up with me thinking I should write about the Saratoga Beer Summit (a huge, daunting task) I essentially stalled out. However, I let go of my beer writing ambitions, at least for the moment, and decided to share a truly haunting looking film I just learned about.

“The Transfiguration was an official selection at the Cannes Film Festival. Writer/director Michael O’Shea’s debut feature “The Transfiguration” follows troubled teen Milo who hides behind his fascination with vampire lore. When he meets the equally alienated Sophie, the two form a bond that begins to challenge Milo’s dark obsession, blurring his fantasy into reality. A chilling portrait of violence, The Transfiguration is an atmospheric thriller set against the grit of New York City. – from the official website.

This looks like a unique take on the vampire myth. Of course it appears the question will be, is he a vampire that needs to kill to live, or is he a human killer? Scream said, “Imagine if ‘Let the Right One In’ was directed by Larry Clark. That might not sound like the most pleasant of viewing experiences, but it’ll certainly pack a hard-hitting punch. Michael O’Shea’s ‘The Transfiguration’ takes the troubled teen urban drama and injects it with dose of Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer, and the results are an impressive, if a tad harrowing at times.”

“The Transfiguration” opens in New York, NY on April 7th and in Los Angeles, CA on April 22nd. You can keep up with release dates and locations on their official website.

The Art and Science of Hand Reading

Sorry for the delay in posts. I’ve been doing the headache thing pretty bad and I’ve also been busy adulting. (If you want to read about term life insurance conversions, just say so!) And while we’re discussing delays, I’m reviewing a book that debuted roughly a year ago! However good things come to those who wait, and “The Art and Science of Hand Reading” is quite good!

I love reading about divination. Who doesn’t wish they could get a glimpse into the future? Out of all the divinatory arts, palmistry has always held a particular fascination. Maybe it is the act of giving over your hand to someone and the idea that your whole life is written on your hands that makes it feel more intimate. If you want to learn how to read hands, then I’ve got the book you need!

“The Art and Science of Hand Reading: Classical Methods for Self-Discovery through Palmistry” by Ellen Goldberg and Dorian Bergen has everything you need. The methodology used in the book is in the Benham lineage of palmistry. At the age of 13 William Benham discovered palmistry. He was so devoted to the study of the palm that he earned a medical degree to further his understanding. In 1900 he published “The Laws of Scientific Hand Reading”. The authors say “that this book is a great-grandchild of Benham”.

The book is dense. For readers thinking this is some sort of beginner’s guide, you’re wrong. “The Art and Science of Hand Reading” is a complete text book. 544 pages that demand study and review. There are copious diagrams, photos, and palm prints. Every inch of the hand is explored; ranging from palms to fingernails to hand flexibility. It’s fascinating stuff.

“The Art and Science of Hand Reading” by Ellen Goldberg and Dorian Bergen is the only book on the subject of palmistry that you may ever need. It’s certainly a resource you’ll turn to again and again.

Eight Steps to Squash Struggle Forever

Eight Steps to Squash Struggle Forever – Be Outrageous: Do the Impossible
By Jean Walters

Almost everyone struggles with something, whether it’s the kids going off to college, an unfulfilling job, divorce, looming retirement, or simply not having enough fun. All of these situations can lead to struggle, but what if it doesn’t have to be that way?

I believe that it is possible to face life head on, go through transitions, and actually become stronger and have more fun in the process. There are numerous action steps you can take right now that will help eliminate struggle and make your life easier and more fun!! Here are eight of them:

Step #1: Take full responsibility for your life. All of it. When you let external conditions control your destiny, you surrender your power and authority. By the same token, when you allow someone else to be in charge of your life, you keep yourself stuck. You are the victim and that is not a powerful position. The truth is you may not be able to control all your circumstances, but you have total control on how you respond to all them.

Action: First, get clear about what you want. Most people think about what they don’t want. “I don’t want to be poor,” or “I don’t want to be bored,” or “I don’t want to be alone.” Revise this list to say what you DO want. “I want to make more money. “I choose to have more fun.” “I am going to spend more time building and enjoying my relationships with others.” Now you have something to work with. Each of these items require NEW activities and new actions. It’s time to do something different.

Step #2: Don’t arbitrarily accept someone else’s beliefs and opinions. People project their own beliefs onto others. It is called transference. If someone thinks you are not making the best use of your talents, then more than likely, he is not making best use of his. Letting others tell you want is true reneges on your responsibility to draw your own conclusions and can definitely lead to struggle.

Action: Do your own homework. Whether it’s politics, news stories, or simply the best way to bake a cake, ask yourself what you believe about it before asking anyone else what they think. What makes sense to you? What do you think is the best way to balance the budget? Practice having an opinion and stating what that is without worrying what anyone else thinks. This is also a good time to weed out negative people, groups and thought systems. Give up the “Debbie Downers.” Don’t listen to the news 24/7. Do be selective as to what and who you listen to. Finally, find people who are happy and hang out with them.

Step #3: If you need to do it – do it. Take action and stand by it. That means leave a miserable job or relationship, relocate, take a class, start a new career – start over. Your life is your journey. If you are not growing, you are not going to be happy. Add to this the fact that the world is constantly changing and so must you. Don’t resist because that is what causes struggle. Embrace change.

Action: Make a list of things you want to do or change. Pick the first item and DO IT!! You can start with something small and work up to the bigger items. Maybe it’s as simple as always hanging up your clothes at the end of the day. Perhaps it is time to lose that extra 15 pounds you’ve been carrying around. Why not start a conversation with that good-looking guy you see in the coffee shop every other morning? If you want to develop a new skill, then find a mentor or take a class and learn something new. How about a class in computers, or take a foreign language course? Perhaps you’d like to learn about the travel industry, or how to start a bed and breakfast. Maybe you’ve always wanted to be an artist, so you could start with a beginner water color class. If you’re looking to reduce stress and anxiety, sign up for a meditation class, yoga, or Pilates.

Step #4: Acknowledge that you are valuable. Remind yourself of this daily. Talk to yourself out loud and affirm your value. Do not underestimate the power of what you say internally. In fact, how you talk to yourself is a make-it or break-it proposition when it comes to struggle. Many people say horrible things to themselves, “How could you have done that; you are stupid; you are unlovable; you will never amount to anything.” These are lies. They are generated from the ego that loves control. Paying attention to ego railings is like having a giant thumb pressing down on you. If you listen to the negativity, you will never step out of your box and investigate your incredible self. Again, decide who you want to be and find a way to be it.

Action: STOP your mind when it starts in on the negativity. Refuse to give it credence. It is your mind – you get to say what goes on there. Mental discipline is key to releasing struggle, so don’t let your mind run on automatic pilot. Be vigilant about it. Remind yourself daily – hourly, in fact — that “You are valuable.” To prevent becoming overwhelmed with negative self-talk, move. Get out into nature and take a walk while breathing deeply. Take action, such as cleaning out a closet or drawer. When you have calmed down, write in a journal to expunge fears, and then write about your desires, hopes and dreams. Clear your mind so that you remember that you are valuable — a unique piece to the universal puzzle that makes everything work.

Step #5: Dump any emotional baggage. This includes memories of being hurt, offended, or criticized. Let it go! So your mother didn’t love you enough and your father wasn’t there. That is on them and not you. Forgive them and move on. While you’re at it, forgive your brother, your sister, your mean-spirited boss, your soccer coach, your nosy neighbors, and the rude store clerk. Let them all go. How? First, remember that what others project out is what is inside of them.

Action: Observing your thoughts for ten minutes a day. Take notes. When you have a “blaming thought”, stop and correct yourself. “Wait. I am responsible for my life.” If you find yourself feeling resentment or thinking, “poor me,” make an adjustment and change your thoughts. Sometimes we are tempted to ruminate, but it is exactly at those moments when you must catch yourself and interrupt your pattern. Deliberately think about something else: Bring up a pleasant memory. Remember a time when you confidently handled some situation in your life and you did it well. Keep correcting yourself and eventually the victim thoughts lesson. By clearing out the mental space held by grievances, you feel lighter and the payoff is huge… squashing struggle forever.

Step 6: Find a way to express yourself. Everyone is creative and creativity must be expressed. Build something. Write something. Learn to draw or speak. Everyone needs an outlet to express energy, one that is uniquely one’s own. Experiment until you discover yours. It is your gift to the world.

Action: Start with things that come easy for you — decorating cakes, coaching a soccer team, organizing, making friends. Then expand on that. If you’re not sure how to do that, then take classes until you discover a way that feels good for you. You don’t have to be a Picasso to paint or a Hemingway to write. Teaching, volunteering, sales, accounting, and business – these are all creative endeavors. Don’t worry about monetizing your efforts. Just do it for fun. You never know where this will take you. One fellow I knew visited junkyards and found interesting pieces of metal, which he welded together to create sculptures. He loved it. In time, he started a side business selling metal art.

Step 7: Become a possibility-thinker. When you look at a person, relationship, or opportunity, ask yourself, “What are the possibilities here?” Most people don’t see possibilities because they never ask the question. You must ask the question and seek possibilities. What if joining a study group opens up opportunities to learn new skills, meet amazing people, or start a new career? What if taking a new route to work reveals a short cut, a new restaurant in town, or a beautiful view. Be curious and try new things.

Action: Start by making a list of all the possible ways to do something. Pick a subject and write it down at the top of the sheet of paper, or on a document in your computer. For instance: If you want to go back to school and you need tuition money, what are some ways you could pay for it? Here are some ideas: You can take the money out of savings, get a school loan or grant, procure a home equity line of credit, ask someone to help you, put it on your credit card, win the lottery, trade services with someone for paying your tuition, get a job that subsidizes schooling, join the military so you can go to college, win a contest, find a benefactor, and so forth. These are a few possibilities, but you can come up with more. If you are saying to yourself, that won’t work; that won’t work, etc. Ignore them. Those thoughts keep you in the struggle.

Step 8: Turn failure into triumph. It is important to pay attention to what you have previously called failure because this is where you can slip into struggle. The loss of a job doesn’t mean it’s the end of the world; it is an opportunity to find a better one or maybe start a whole new business. When a relationship ends, it may leave you feeling feel lost and disoriented. However, the completion of a relationship may indicate you have outgrown it, learned the lesson it was to teach you, or someone new is waiting for you. By facing the unknown and turning “failure” into triumph, you discover more about yourself. Sometimes the gift is learning that quiet time alone can be restorative. It can be the beginning of new friendships, adventure, and a fresh, new life.

Action: Do an assessment and write out your conclusions. First, look back at your life and notice what “failure” actually led to a better opportunity? When did that unexpected turn in the road guide you to something amazing and wonderful? You took a detour only to discover your soul mate. You didn’t get into a certain school, only to discover a different learning opportunity that led to your dream career. Pause to ponder this: Is there anything in your life now that you consider terrible? And let me ask you this: Have you ever been wrong? Is it possible that this terrible situation is a lead in to a thrilling new escapade? If it’s happened in the past, it very likely will happen again. Do a personal audit and you will be amazed how failures were really just direction changes.

Whatever it is that you struggle with — an empty nest, an unfulfilling job, divorce, retirement or whatever, get busy. Reboot your perspective. Squash the struggle and you’ll have a lot more energy to create the life you want.

Bowls of Happiness

“Bowls of Happiness” (by Brian Tse and Alice Mak, and translated by Ben Wang) is wonderful little book that entertains with its whimsical art and story, and it also teaches about ancient Chinese bowls. The book is part of a series which aims to introduce children to Chinese culture at an early age. The publisher recommends “Bowls of Happiness” for children aged 4 and older.

First we read a story about a mother and her daughter she affectionately calls “Piggy”. Piggy’s mom decides to create a special bowl just for her, and as she works on it Piggy enters the world being painted on the bowl. Through the story we see classic Chinese porcelain bowl designs and learn their symbolism. Once the story concludes the next section shows photos of actual bowls and talks about the intricate meanings of the images and use of color. You also learn how the bowls were made. The last thing is a bowl you can decorate yourself.

Although obviously geared for children, “Bowls of Happiness” is actually a wonderful source of information for adults too. The original art is enchanting and the photos of the bowls are beautiful. “Bowls of Happiness” is a great little book for children and adults.

People’s Climate March

This information was provided by People’s Climate March & the Sierra Club.

In the wake of the Women’s Marches, activists have announced a major People’s Climate March on April 29th in Washington, D.C. and across the country. The effort is being organized by the coalition formed out of 2014’s People’s Climate March, which brought over 400,000 people to the streets of New York City and many more around the world.

The April 29th march comes in response to widespread outrage against President Trump’s disastrous anti-climate agenda – including his executive orders advancing the Keystone and Dakota Access pipelines – as well as his attacks on healthcare, immigrants, and programs and policies that improve the lives of all Americans. The event will cap off 100 days of action to fight Trump’s proposals to reverse climate action, dismantle our government and hand power over to the one percent.

Over 145 protests in local communities took place across the country in the first 100 hours of the Trump presidency, demonstrating widespread opposition to the administration’s anti-environment and corporate agenda as part of an ongoing campaign organized by the People’s Climate Movement.

The People’s Climate Movement grew out of the largest climate march in U.S. history in New York in September of 2014, creating a groundbreaking coalition of green and environmental justice groups, labor unions, faith, students, indigenous peoples and civil rights groups working to advance a climate agenda rooted in economic and racial justice.

With the 100 days of action and April march, this coalition will leverage their power once again, to resist the Trump administration and corporate leaders’ efforts to thwart or reverse progress towards a more just America.

Now more than ever, it will take everyone to change everything. So, the People’s Climate Movement is calling on everyone to join in resisting Trump, his crooked administration and the one percent who are running our country.

Everyday Witch Tarot for Everyone

Rejoice tarot lovers! A new classic is out in the wild and available for purchase now! I’m talking about “Everyday Witch Tarot” by Deborah Blake with art by Elisabeth Alba.

Imagine the Rider-Waite tarot and then infuse it with witch whimsy and you have the “Everyday Witch Tarot”. The 252 page “Guide to the Everyday Witch Tarot” that comes with the deck is a fabulous, full color, affair. The card descriptions are written in an accessible manner and sometimes give you a new perspective.

The Devil

The Devil made you do it? I don’t think so.

A handsome devil of a mage with dark hair, a pointed black beard, and a swirling black cape is offering money to a male witch and an ice cream cone to a young female witch. While he is smiling and pleasant, a pointed tail curls out from underneath his cape and his eyes have a reddish gleam. Each witch has a cat who is trying to pull them away and is being ignored. A volcano smokes in the far background. The mood is ominous but not hopeless.

Contrary to what you might think, the Devil doesn’t represent some evil being who comes in from the outside world to lure and ensnare us. That would be easier to fight than the reality, which is that each of us has devils that we have created for ourselves: addiction, bad habits, obsessions, and unhealthy decisions that we cling to long after it is clear that they are leading us in the wrong direction or holding our lives hostage. Temptation can be so hard to resist. That makes this seem like a scary, hopeless card, but it isn’t. We often hold onto the devil we know because we are more comfortable with the negativity and dysfunction we are used to than we are the idea of starting over and creating something better. But you can do it. You chose this devil, and you can choose to say “no more.”

I offered this example to give you a taste of Blake’s writing style to be found throughout the book, but I picked this particular card to warn you that kitty cats abound in this deck. It’s no surprise considering Magic the Cat oversees most of Blake’s projects. But the cats in this scenario are attempting to help? Obviously written by a cat lover. We all know that although cute, cats are more than happy to let you screw up. (See examples of cats being adorable, yet evil here.)

Let’s get real though, when considering buying a tarot deck you want to see the art. ALL THE ART! Well, we ain’t doing that here, but I did want to show you a few more examples of the great job artist Elisabeth Alba did bring “Everyday Witch Tarot” to life.

The back of every card has this adorable and classic looking design.

Magic the Cat was the model.

Also, here the joyous The Sun.

Do you feel the sun on your face?

It’s no secret that Deborah Blake is my sister from another mister, but in all honesty this deck is a modern classic. Llewellyn would be stupid to ever let this go out of print because “Everyday Witch Tarot” is a deck that will be enjoyed again and again as it is rediscovered by each new generation of tarot reader.
