Moonlight Tarot’s Question Corner: Mystical Answers to Mundane Inquiries

By Angela Kaufman, Moonlight Tarot LLC

August brings the early signs of harvest and the desire to reap the fruits of one’s labor. This month’s Querent, who we will call Lisa, is a hard working professional in the sales industry. She has recently started a new job and is interested in finding out how she can increase her sales.

The initial impressions in this reading are full of harvest symbolism- the image of an Apple tree full of connotations; wisdom, risk, fruitful endeavors and Magick. Lisa should also be mindful of potential clients or agencies with apple or apple tree as part of their logo or name. A secondary impression early on in the reading is that of a computerized program that expands Lisa’s network as well as access to a greater database of information and clients. It seems that this is somehow linked with an educational program suggesting either distance learning or a certification that enables her to expand her reach and customer base as well as the information of benefit to clients.

The first card drawn is the Three of Pentacles. This suggests expansion in business and career as a result of specialized training experience or certification. It suggests that branching out and gaining the edge in career as a result of specialization. Lisa should be on the lookout for opportunities for growth through furthering her education. It also seems like this will be an opportunity that is granted to a group but a small group or team. Collaboration in this advancement opportunity will expand Lisa’s knowledge and skill base but more importantly will give some type of official certification or credential which will attract potential clients. It seems like Lisa’s professional network will be improved through exposure granted by this educational opportunity. This also suggests a time period of about three months during which time sales will increase and client base will expand.

The next card is the Three of Rods. As this is another three it strengthens the emphasis on expansion and broadening Lisa’s horizons especially through small group efforts that take shape within the next three months. This time the emphasis is not only on accomplishments through training and recognition of abilities and skills but on networking and communication. Small focus groups and team efforts that involve writing, research and advertising will help advance sales and customer base. It also feels like some type of database or shared network is involved. Lisa should be alert to opportunities to take part in collaborative group endeavors, focus groups and networking opportunities involving both social networking but also access to information stored in a more advanced database. There is some advantage that will come her way through written communication and likely through electronic communication. It seems like access to this database will increase her clientele and access to the information she is able to provide to clients that will give her an edge in her field.

The final card is the Hierophant numbered 5. This card connects Lisa to institutions and organizations which hold a large established structure. Within the next three months Lisa will have opportunities to expand and increase her training and it seems like she will ultimately be facing the decision to make a commitment to advance within a large organization. If the current company is a small or independent business it seems like some growth will take place over the next few months but that the opportunity to become part of a larger system will be enticing. This system has both work and educational components to it and it seems like Lisa will be able to learn a great deal from her experience with this organization but will postpone the autonomy and creative influence she may currently have in order to complete her training or be part of this organization. Likewise within about three months’ time Lisa will have the opportunity to experience advancement and the full potential of her current work but may come to feel stifled or repressed nonetheless. At this point it seems she will have the opportunity to advance her career by breaking ties with the current organization in favor of one in which she will earn more in the long term after completing some short term training and acquiring further seniority. Long term gains with short term sacrifice will be the theme in this transition as it will seem as if Lisa’s efforts are not bringing suitable level of financial rewards. It also seems like work within a government agency or work that involves an initial return to school will be presented and it will be in Lisa’s favor to pursue this in spite of short term financial constraints. This experience of stagnation and financial plateau after some initial gain and recognition will help serve as a catalyst for Lisa to reinvent her professional image with the help of a return to an educational program or alignment with this powerful organization. It also appears that a mentor or guardian particularly an older gentleman, is influential in helping Lisa to develop in her career at this time. The next few months will lead Lisa to opportunities to find her footing within her field by aligning with a powerful structure or institution which helps give her greater confidence and grounding in her new area. This institution blends spiritual tradition with very practical knowledge and skills and will help Lisa to develop an edge over the competition. This fall would be an ideal time to reconsider training opportunities that will allow Lisa to combine traditional techniques with access to newer technology.

As Lisa’s reading emphasizes the number three, this is a key time to network and expand the social links fostering connections with clients and selling opportunities. The theme of expansion is also fostered by stimulating Lisa’s own energy through creativity- especially use of the written word. This will help discharge stagnant energy and develop new potential through the creative act of establishing the end result through the focus of the imagination. It seems that Lisa will progress financially and will find a solid basis in her career but will eventually find some aspects of her current work to be too personally limiting. More specifically it seems that her sales and profits will increase but she will find that her personal share of her earnings will level off. It seems that she will reach a point where she is earning more than at present but not as much as desired to meet her expectations- either a portion of the earnings gets absorbed by the company or actually plateaus. When this time comes it seems that liberation through increased training or retraining will offer a way for personal and professional advancement. She is encouraged to be on the lookout for opportunities to engage in small focus groups as part of training experiences in the near future and be open to considering affiliation with a larger organization that fosters growth through certification, training and knowledge passed down through an official structure or hierarchy. Membership in a group that utilizes an electronic database to gather and share information will also be to her benefit. There is also an impression of mentors both in the physical and spiritual planes- Lisa’s Higher Power is guarding her interests and there is a strong intuitive/guardian spirit present with her especially in travel. She may have this energy focused in the form of a talisman or guardian image or icon in her car, but even if not this spiritual energy travels with her and is looking out for her highest good. She is encouraged to be receptive to the subtle guidance this spiritual energy imparts on her in the form of intuitive knowing beyond logical reason.

Best of luck to Lisa in her quest to enhance her career and find her niche in a new market. Remember, no matter where you are reading this column all readings are intended for entertainment purposes in accordance with NYS law.

Magical Times with Magical Times Empowerment Cards

“Magical Times: Empowerment Cards” by Jody Bergsma are simply magical. First I admired the box. It’s beautiful, made out of sturdy cardboard, and it has a hinged top that makes getting the cards in and out a breeze. Then there are the cards themselves. Bergsma’s art is fantastic. Her art is fantasy oriented and whimsical. It reminds me of one of my favorites, NeNe Thomas. Of course there is the empowerment part. The messages Bergsma imparts through her “Magical Times” cards are wonderful. They inspire but many of them also make you consider the future.

Change - By Jody Bergsma

The book that comes with the deck includes a few spreads you can try with the cards. I keep the deck next to my lighted make up mirror. Each morning when I sit down to put on my lotion I shuffle and pull a card off of the deck. I try to keep its message in mind throughout the day. I would highly recommend the deck and this method of using it.

The “Magical Times: Empowerment Cards” by Jody Bergsma are a wonderful tool. A fun and beautiful deck that can easily be incorporated into your daily life.

Moonlight Tarot’s Question Corner: Mystical Answers to Mundane Inquiries

By Angela Kaufman, Moonlight Tarot LLC

It is strongly advised in Tarot and Psychic practice to not conduct readings for those who have not requested guidance. Yet this month I felt compelled to acknowledge a need that exists in our time of transition of the ages and heightened spiritual and mundane anxieties. In honor of the birthday of America as we know it I chose to conduct an oracle reading unsolicited for the people of America in our new age of consciousness and spiritual enlightenment.

It was a struggle for me to pin down the exact question I wanted to ask. How can things get better? What do we as a society need to do to improve our culture? Are we doomed? After reflection and meditation on this question I was led to use a special deck- the Medicine Cards deck- an animal oracle by Jamie Sam and David Carson. The question is less of a question, but rather a request- Animal Spirits…. What do we need to know, do or experience? In this reading, the spirits of animals native to this country bring their message of guidance and healing.

Ant. Like any modern American I admit my ego secretly fantasized that the first messenger would be large and grand- Hawk, Eagle, Mountain Lion….Ant? The Powers that Be certainly don’t miss a beat in reminding me that my ego has no place in spiritual matters. Ant appears first with Her gift to America. Work, community, collaboration and diligence. Ants are small but strong, surprisingly so. Her message to us is to not deny our own strength and ability to move mountains- one grain of sand at a time. She reminds us of the value of our communities- of all members of our families, neighborhoods and cities- and that we are as strong as our weakest fellows. Our capacity and determination to build and thrive are endless as long as we work diligently toward our goals. Ants remind us to work from the ground up. Grassroots organizations exemplify this energy well. Ant also reminds us of lessons from our heritage- the folk heroes who regardless of our individual cultures, collectively embody the spirit of the individual who overcomes great odds, achieves the unexpected and acts with integrity in honor of community and the benefit to future generations. Discipline and collaboration, as well as harboring large dreams but having the humility to begin with small steps to achieve these dreams are all part of Ant’s gift to us in America today. Sometimes we may need to be persistent, sometimes we may present as pests, but we can not let fears and obstacles block us from our goals. An ant in the midst of their work will go under, over, around or through any obstacle in its way. Each ant carries their work with the collective benefit of each small endeavor benefiting the greater community. Ant also brings the gift of patience and faith, as we co-create the new era of spiritual awareness, let us not forget that each step we take brings us closer to our goals. Perhaps the time is dawning in which we must all ask ourselves what steps have I taken today to strengthen the community and to build our collective dreams? Each part of the whole counts, Ant teaches us. Therefore let us not disregard any part of our community, any portion of our resources, or any step in the larger process of accomplishing together what we can not alone. Having been given this message, I know I have a lot of reflecting to do on how each day can bring an opportunity to be of service to a larger cause than my immediate- and fleeting- needs. And if that isn’t enough, from what I hear…they have high hopes!

Raven is the second animal to come forth through this oracle and share Her message. Raven carries mystique and power. She is synonymous with mysteries of death and with the battlefield. In Celtic lore Raven was the symbol of the Morrigan who was the personification of the warrior spirit. Raven is a shapeshifter, trickster and a bringer of great Magick. Well America, we have our work cut out for us! First Ant is reminding us to honor the smallest of steps in our effort to build our dreams for the collective good- to patiently allow that the sum total of our actions result in the manifestation of progress, regardless of how small or powerless we feel on our journey- and now Raven is bringing the message of change profound transformation. Raven’s power comes from encountering and passing through the realms of death in order to be reborn. It is no surprise that we are given the gift of Raven’s message- as the country faces numerous sources of great unrest and confronts pivotal crisis points both socially, politically, economically and environmentally. Raven signals dangers to those who are aware and open, She prepares warriors for great battles, and she stands by to initiate those whose time has arrived into the mysteries of death and rebirth. She has a bad reputation for destruction and association with darkness- but this is short sighted. She is not the cause of the darkness, rather she is a wise teacher- the type of teacher who will stand by you at the height of a crisis, let us not forget that her presence at the climax of a tragedy does not mean she caused such tragedy in the first place. Raven is there to show us how to transcend disaster, how to integrate and heal significant wounds, and how to rebuild after destruction has occurred. If we are wise we will heed Her warning and prepare for a time in which our illusions are challenged and new vision will be required in order to regroup and succeed. We can not win the battles ahead with outdated ideas and assumptions, nor with the ignorance of the past eras. Raven helps provide us with the most powerful magickal ability- the power to see beyond what we already believe to be true. After all, it was Raven who gifted the Norse God Odin with the wisdom of Rune lore in his time of greatest need- suspended from Yggdrasil by his ankle and rendered powerless and stuck. Perhaps we too, as a nation have reached a point in our development in which our old definitions, systems, and ideals have reached their natural conclusions. The firm ground we once stood on has been shaken by changing times and we may feel we no longer have a leg to stand on. In Odin’s case, liberation from bondage was found in exchange for one physical eye- the price he paid to Raven for the gift of the runes- the exchange then of sight for insight, physical vision for spiritual wisdom. Perhaps it is time we reflect on the strong currents of change revealing themselves all around us, and what sacrifices we are ready to make in order to transcend our old expectations that have only brought us illusions and limitations. When we are ready to open our true eyes, Raven will be waiting. In the mean time I wonder in what ways I am being summoned to accept transformation? Perhaps the warnings from nature that our way of life must change can no longer be ignored without consequence. Raven reminds us that through encountering the dark we find light- be it health, vision, or enlightenment- that all things are held in balance and there are truly no easy gains. Just ask an Ant.

If we can open to Raven’s transformation through darkness we will find light. There are no quick solutions that will be lasting. By encountering sacrifices and accepting loss of what once provided security, we open ourselves up to potential for new growth and fulfillment. As if on cue- Raven is followed by a bringers of light- the Dragonfly. Dragonfly holds a special place in two realms- that of air and water- therefore Her message pertains to the collective conscious, attitudes and creativity of American people, as well as the emotional connection and heritage that bonds us together through our empathy for the common experiences we share. It is worth noting the synchronicity in the evident imbalance of these two qualities at present in the US- tornadoes and floods have ravaged numerous parts of the country. As we bring our collective minds and hearts into balance and open up to the gift of insight and healing provided by Dragonfly- perhaps a greater purpose in the disruption of these two elements will be revealed. We are reminded by Dragonfly that while illusion and distortion of reality can provide a fascinating escape it is not a frame of mind in which we want to get lost. Dragonfly nymphs linger on the water for two years as they develop into their mature form and are able to take flight- this suggests that the next two years will bring a transformation that can provide the catalyst for Americans to soar above their current limitations. This will require creative thinking and the willingness to look beyond immediate gratification. Dragonfly wields the power of light and thus brings both enlightenment and the ability to bend and shape our perceptions in order to reach greater wisdom. A collective commitment to greater consciousness is approaching and many Americans in their own and different ways are answering this call by questioning their values, challenging their assumptions and breaking out of their comfort zones in order to develop new philosophies of living, treating their fellow human beings and all creatures in nature with greater respect and viewing purpose and life from a different vantage point. While crises arise that may diminish the potential capacity for Americans to work collaboratively toward change and consideration for greater good, it is even within these crises- and sometimes because of them- that we are being shown a different way to live and relate to each other. Dragonfly is reminding us of our own inner light and the potential to carry this light to others- but also warns of the distorting quality of illusions which may distract us along the way. Economic and environmental, political and social tensions are causing more of us to see the truth lingering behind our illusions. We are being reminded that a greater purpose exists beyond just treading water- and we must find ways to transcend into higher ideals to find enlightenment.

Happy Birthday America, and may the gifts of these three animals help us in our collective transformations for the good of humanity, the Earth and all Her life forms. May we find meaningful ways to exercise patience, diligence and teamwork, may we come together in times of transition and crisis and be open to the guidance toward our highest potential, and may we find the strength to see truth shine through illusions and distractions.

Moonlight Tarot’s Question Corner: Mystical Answers to Mundane Inquiries

By Angela Kaufman, Moonlight Tarot LLC

May has arrived and so has spring in upstate NY! This month’s querent is a woman we will call “Tara”. She is awakening to signs of a quest are blooming all around her. Tara has been struggling to find a way to express her creativity through work. A very spiritual person by nature, Tara has been receptive to signs all around her that are urging her to pursue a personal quest. She has asked for help identifying the nature of her quest and preparing for this life transition.

The first card selected is the only Major Arcana chosen in her reading. It is the World card and is the final card in the tarot deck. The World is significant and indicates Tara is in a pivotal phase between accomplishment and new beginning. Tara may be experiencing internal restlessness knowing life has brought her opportunities to excel and advance, but that she has taken her past experiences to their maximal conclusion and a major change is just on the horizon. Like a college senior in their final semester, Tara is on a quest to gain the tools and knowledge she needs to advance herself and will then be called upon to launch her new identity and develop her new lifestyle. She will have to make some sacrifices for this quest. It seems that were things to stay as they are, Tara would be recognized as competent, capable….but stuck. It is going to become more and more evident to her that she has outgrown her surroundings and even some aspects of her identity.

In particular, there are four qualities; the four elements, four talents, or four interests, that Tara has developed mastery over and now needs to harness, balance and combine to launch her new lifestyle. Her quest involves honing in knowledge and interests already developed, but further refining, polishing and presenting them to others. Likewise, her passion and motivation has carried her far but at this stage the quest is asking her to channel this motivation to back up the message and knowledge she carries. Her emotional and nurturing side will help her cultivate relationships in this new aspect of her life and it will be important for her to moderate intensity of her desire with the finesse to draw the influence of others who will help her start this new phase of her journey. Finally, the fourth quality, the stable, grounded and structured framework which Tara must remain connected to in order to see her new lifestyle blossom. It seems balance and coordination are indicated. Tara is being asked to expand her horizons and will have to modify her expectations, continually rebalancing these four qualities along the way to show her best capabilities and develop her fullest potential. The quest will have come to full fruition within three years. The first phase is the gathering of awareness and information, the second is collaboration with others and this phase may require some compromise and sacrifice of personal vision to embrace the power of opposites, the third phase will require movement, action and expression of her creativity through the mundane world. The final phase will involve transcendence, movement above and beyond what she had initially expected.

She is also facing a significant ending, as all major beginnings must first see the clearing away of previous structures and framework. There may be aspects of the quest that will show Tara what potential lies before her so that she will not need to give such power to elements of her current routines that bring security and stability. She awaits opportunities for expansion and growth on a significant spiritual level although this will be enacted through her work in the mundane especially in nurturing four paths or four talents. It seems the time has come for Tara to embrace expansion by harnessing four talents or four influences in order to promote abundance in her new path.

The next card is the Ten of Swords. This is drawn to indicate a helping or guiding force and this card shares the significance of ending, culminating events or finality indicated by the World. The variation here is that mundane situations and people on the physical plane are represented and the indication is finality, but also rest, compromise, and a necessary albeit difficult termination. Tara has faced a long journey recently but her many hardships are also guiding forces in disguise. Amidst her trials she has found connections that have helped to motivate and prepare her. She will soon face a pivotal turning point. It will arise out of an ending or completion which feels exhausting and may even feel like a failure or defeat. Tara would do well to refrain from thinking in terms of loss and defeat. She has not lost, she has simply discovered that many of her previous pursuits brought more challenge than reward and she will be given the opportunity to put to rest a burden that she has long carried. Closure is needed in order for her new beginnings to emerge but this means laying down the burden of strife, and resolving acceptance of where she stands and what she has accomplished and gained in the process.

From this point she will be helped by an honest and open confrontation of her inner demons. An appraisal of her strengths, weaknesses and motivations will be necessary. This quest may also present more guidance and help from subtle, unseen or receptive sources than projective, active, tangible ones. By remaining open to the synchronistic opportunities even if they do not fit her plans at first, Tara will be guided and helped along her path. Those of a fiery temperament or active, inspirational, passionate nature will also be likely allies. There may be one particular friend or acquaintance who stands out as a significant assistant helping Tara to unburden her spiritual and physical load. The number ten will also be important. Ten months may be required for this path to unfold or the numbers ten or one surfacing along the way should be considered significant. The culmination of past actions will bring closure rather than bearing desired fruit, yet this closure is what will allow transcendence, moving forward having learned lessons stemming from long past. A release will be found in this quest, relief of a burden, happiness that a difficult trial has resolved. Helpful forces exist along the way but the overall theme is lessons through recognizing the role of choice, action and will in both creating and overcoming hardship and difficulties. Lessons from the past pave the way for the future. The spirit needs to be recharged and refreshed in order to pursue the future free of past burdens. It is advised that Tara attempt to use the imagery of fire to cleanse and clear past negativity, preconceived notions, and residue both from spiritual, personal and mental space. Tara would do well to close the door on the difficult path of swords by allowing herself to shed the skin of the fiery suit, allow the closure of the ten of Swords to return her to the vigor and energy of the Ace of Swords, the essence of motivation and action, that her spirit will be rejuvenated and move to the next phase in progression, the physical, earthy manifestation of Pentacles.

Finally, in looking for the source of challenge along the quest, the Six of Swords is drawn. It seems a resolution to a long standing issue is on the horizon, a journey now represented in somewhat physical forms- travel, change of scenery, movement and setting sights on new horizons all in the effort to start over renewed. It seems Tara will be accompanied by loved ones or at least will journey with their support. It seems that a change of scenery across or alongside water brings a brighter future, a positive resolution found by change of scenery and atmosphere. Tara may feel as if she is shortchanged or compromising, but it seems this is a necessary step in releasing her from the tension of the path she has been on. There may be some difficulty involved in travel or fear of unknown or unfamiliar surroundings that at first prohibits Tara from accepting this change. The Six brings resolution, relief and reconciliation. A reconnection to her personal past may be indicated here as well, even a compromise that allows her to heal connections to past friends or family so that she can continue into her future with full healing and reconciling of differences. Taken in total, it seems Tara’s quest is here to bring resolution and closure and so a natural grieving process may be taking place as Tara moves farther away from her past measures of security and identity, allowing the foundation she has laid and lessons she has learned to help her accept a change of scenery involving some compromise in plans or expectations but overall accomplishment and momentum forward where she has recently been stuck in transition finalizing one phase and awaiting another.

Best of luck to Tara on her quest. Remember, no matter where you are reading this, in accordance with NYS law all readings are intended for entertainment only.

Moonlight Tarot’s Question Corner: Mystical Answers to Mundane Inquiries

By Angela Kaufman, Moonlight Tarot LLC

This column is intended to provide messages from the Tarot to address modern problems experienced by everyday people. Questioners, also known as “Querents” submit requests to have their issue addressed in a complimentary three card Tarot Reading published as part of the Magical Buffet. The reading not only addresses the Querent’s issue but also provides education about the role of Tarot as a tool for exploration and empowerment.

This month’s Querent is a woman we will call Maria. Maria writes that she has recently undergone many significant life changes, sending her on a very different path than she had planned. She states that she is trying to regroup and move forward but faces numerous unknowns related to the future of her career and other personal goals. Having gone through a lot of upheaval, Maria sums up her numerous questions in a general request to try to learn what she needs to understand about the situation she is in, so that she may use these circumstances to the best possible resolution.

Three cards are drawn from the Fairy Tarots, these are the Three of Hearts, Knave of Acorns, and Nine of Bells. First off, it is worth noting that while Maria is overwhelmed by numerous life changes the cards drawn are minor arcana. This suggests that the larger implications of the changes at hand have been understood. Maria is asking what more she needs to understand about this situation and it seems that she has already gained insight into spiritual implications of what transpired around her, yet needs to understand the finer details in a mundane sense in order to make the most of her circumstances.

The Three of Hearts suggests unity, joy, celebration and support among friends. It bodes well for expansion of loving social relationships and shared happiness in a family or group setting. It suggests the opportunity has arisen for Maria to attend gatherings where others are joining together to celebrate and share their joys and sorrows, finding support and becoming uplifted through their emotional bonds to each other. Although life may have been difficult recently it would appear this is changing, and Maria is in an optimal position to appreciate her connection to others on a deeper level. More emphasis on friendships and family support are arising now and this may be a prime opportunity to slow down and focus on cultivating a more loving, nurturing bond with close friends and family. It also seems likely that a celebration or party of some sort is on the horizon and that this will bring emotional happiness and relief. Celebration is a key element here and it seems Maria is going to find opportunities to express gratitude and experience happiness, a “full cup” that necessitates sharing with others. The focus now is on healing through emotional expression and connecting in small group settings. Presence in family activities, social gatherings and support groups may be indicated at this time as well. There is an indication of finding her place among peers as well, neither dominating, nor subservient. Maria will encounter situations that represent a homecoming, finding her place among friends and sharing in emotional ups and downs with more mindfulness and greater empathy for others.

The Knave of Acorns follows. This card is unique to the Fairy Tarot deck as Acorns are not a traditional Tarot suit. It suggests that difficulties have brought a harsh winter from which the character has become sturdy. It is a mix between the energies of traditional swords (hardship/vitality) and pentacles (sturdiness, practicality) from traditional decks. Maria has experienced loss and hardship which have driven her motivation to succeed and provided insight into her greater strengths. Nonetheless she is starting out as a relative novice in new territory, one which requires greater resilience and determination than she has had to exert before. A new practicality and sensibility are emerging and it is likely that while Maria will come to appreciate the role of social supports more now, she will also have a firm ability to remain grounded and not be heavily influenced by raw emotion. Change is on the horizon and through Maria’s diligent efforts and strength of character she will be forging ahead and entering into new business ventures. Her career may be altered slightly, building on past experience and taking on more advocacy and service in a field that draws out the strength she has gained from loss and changes of the recent past. It would appear she will have the opportunity to embark on a crusade in service to others. Incremental progress is also indicated, gradual development and intermediate gains as she grows into this new role.

Growth on a more polished and professional level is ultimately indicated by the Nine of Bells. It seems that while Maria is experiencing the growing pains of exploring change in her career and how she expends the energy of daily life, uncovering potential strengths and skills refined by recent trials, she will have the opportunity to glean profit financially and in terms of status from the change in her outward and career focus. It appears that Maria will be building up an abundance of material wealth compensating for losses that have occurred and giving further material comfort. It seems that a new way of allocating energy and a new purpose with career will help Maria establish a more comfortable living for herself and her family. She may also be “grandmothered” or eased in to a new position or new career path by those with experience, thereby “inheriting” greater status professionally, or new work opportunities altogether. This does not seem to imply an outright new job or career, but a new development based on her existing foundation, one which presents a heightened, more refined status to the public image and also provides more comfort and abundance personally.

In the short term, it seems that Maria is being called upon to increase her awareness of the importance of social and emotional connections, to nurture emotional needs in a mutually beneficial setting and to take advantage of family and social gatherings, parties and positive, joyful events that help redirect her focus away from past stress and losses. In the mean time it seems that opportunities to further advance or develop skills born of conflict and loss will bring an important change in focus that will allow Maria the opportunity to convert painful experience into personal wisdom, assisting others in the process. The ultimate outcome seems to be a gain both in finances, security and status, with a shift in priorities that emphasizes personal joy, relationships, happiness and an ability to thrive even under difficult conditions.

Best of luck to Maria as spring awakens new beginnings and opportunities for greater understanding. Remember, no matter where you are reading this readings are intended for entertainment purposes in accordance with NYS law.

Moonlight Tarot’s Question Corner: Mystical Answers to Mundane Inquiries

By Angela Kaufman, Moonlight Tarot LLC

March 2013

This column is intended to provide messages from the Tarot to address modern problems experienced by everyday people. Questioners, also known as “Querents” submit requests to have their issue addressed in a complimentary three card Tarot Reading published as part of the Magical Buffet. The reading not only addresses the Querent’s issue but also provides education about the role of Tarot as a tool for exploration and empowerment.

This month’s reading turns away from the traditional Tarot in favor of a special oracle deck based on Celtic lore. This is the Celtic Messages Oracle deck. This reading addresses a question of general guidance for the present and near future asked by this month’s Significator, who will be referred to as John. John’s inquiry is general which makes for a great Tarot reading but also lends itself well to readings conducted by an oracle deck as well.

When general guidance is sought through an oracle deck it is important to keep an open mind to the messages that come forth as an oracle increases awareness of changing tides or opportunities presenting requiring certain energies in order to manifest the best possible results. The first card drawn for this reading is the Cow/Bull which will be referred to in this column as the Cow. This is a card of resourcefulness and harnessing one’s assets and material wealth. This card suggests that John spend the next few months taking stock of resources on numerous levels. Not only the monetary value of their resources, but also the value inherent in utilizing resources to the full extent. So John, are there tools available to you that you may be overlooking? Are there areas in your life where you are wasting energy, money, time or physical possessions? The Cow suggests that this is a time to start making full use of what you already have. There seem to be several outlets or possible opportunities that need to be sculpted or crafted with a mix of creativity, imagination and frugality. The Cow reminds John that nothing is to be wasted in this endeavor. What John is seeking is not going to originate with the resources or reserves of another but will be built making use of what is already at his disposal. This is a time of abundance and growth especially if John is able to take stock of the wealth he already has at his fingertips and make use of the abundance before him. The Cow is a sacred animal as it is a singular source of both food, clothing, protection, medicine, milk, a living cornucopia able to suit all of John’s needs. In what ways, John, is abundance right at your doorstep, needing only to be recognized for the full utility available to you? John has ample opportunity at this time to experience growth and extend generosity to others and it would be in his best interest to make use of talents and resources for which he does not often credit himself. Leaving no potential link unexplored would benefit John at this time as there is abundance in his life that needs to be reinvested and cultivated to a greater extent. There will be opportunity to network and expand the social circle with benefit to John’s career as a result. This will not be a passive process however, he must make the connections and extend himself openly showing the best of his many talents and making his unique and creative abilities clear to influential people who could help advance his career.

Herne is the next card pulled. This card refers to the Wild God of the forest and brings energy of chaos, virility, change and excitement. From a full assessment and utilization of strengths and assets already at John’s disposal, he will be prepared for a period soon to come in which change, action, and an element of the unexpected and chaotic will begin to surface. This will not be a threatening time, but rather one of high energy, calling John to keep pace with the momentum and summon the energy needed to charge ahead. This will be a very productive time and a very creative time as well. It may feel like John is tending to a large and fertile garden and he will need to keep up with the work before him in order to remain ahead of the game. Herne is seen as an aspect of the God of the Wild Hunt, Vegetation and wildlife. John may feel drawn back to nature or to embark on creative projects that put him in close contact with nature and the elements, especially with Oak and the Stag. Both symbols of strength and virility. Herne also brings lessons of sacrifice and guardianship. He is said to have either been injured in a great hunting expedition and healed but with some residual limitations, or in other stories hung himself from an Oak tree after being outcast from his companions as a result of false accusations of treason against the King. With this in mind, John, be aware of the potential to be scapegoated or challenged by those who may harbor jealousies or have ulterior motives. In the course of this time of increased productivity, creativity and personal questing there may come a feeling of being left out or scapegoated. John will do well to recall the potent abilities, skills, talents and resources already at hand and to make the most of the current hunt without allowing the opinions or insecurities of others to interfere. Also, he will need to contend with feeling ostracized or scapegoated and look instead for the sources of guidance and strength. Just as Herne is associated with sacrifice and the Sacred Hunt, he is also considered a great protector of wildlife and is summoned when others are in need of guardianship and protection. John will face the choice of pursuing his quest in honor of a greater goal, for the benefit of many as opposed to becoming lost in martyrdom and disconnected from his higher integrity. Major change is underway and may be unsettling for John as he may feel as if he is losing that which provided control and security. By being open to the process of change and healing John may be pleasantly surprised to realize the full potential he is now able to live up to.

The last card drawn is the Ford. The Ford is a marker of transition. It seems that John will be approaching a phase requiring him to take action and make a firm commitment and that simply looking to greener pastures with envy will not serve him, but rather he is being called to take action and seek that which he desires. He will need to summon courage and conviction to face obstacles that appear in his path without backing down or trying to find loopholes that will divert his energy away from potential conflict or the confrontation of uncomfortable situations that force him to contend with disruption in his plans. John will need to keep emotional waters calm and adopt the view of the observer, from which angle he will then be able to cross the emotional waters, making the best of what is available at this time and turning roadblocks into advantageous learning experiences. This will require him to reach beyond his comfort zone but will prove rewarding in the end. What may seem like difficulty is in a greater sense an opportunity to rise above a challenge and respond to barriers in a different way, thereby carving out new paths, new attitudes, behaviors, and a different personal energy that will demonstrate to John that not only can he overcome the difficulties at hand, but has also evolved into a whole new playing field. From this vantage point John will be better able to handle difficulties that arise in his life in the future as well. This is a time of demonstrating through action just how reason can overrule emotional reaction and help John ultimately reach his goals. He may feel torn between two courses of action or struggle with self doubt or ambivalence. The challenge ahead will bring a convenient opportunity to back down and repeat outmoded patterns of behavior that allow for self sabotage, or will pave the way for new accomplishments and greater confidence. The choice will be up to John when the time arrives.

Remember, no matter where you are reading this article, all readings are for entertainment purposes in accordance with New York State law. Best of luck to John on his future ventures as he harnesses the friction of change and finds his way through the challenges that once would have deterred him on his journey.

Moonlight Tarot’s Question Corner: Mystical Answers to Mundane Inquiries

By Angela Kaufman, Moonlight Tarot LLC

February 2013

This column is intended to provide messages from the Tarot to address modern problems experienced by everyday people. Questioners, also known as “Querents” submit requests to have their issue addressed in a complimentary three card Tarot Reading published as part of the Magical Buffet. The reading not only addresses the Querent’s issue but also provides education about the role of Tarot as a tool for exploration and empowerment.

As February’s cold dark days bring the desire for warmth and comfort, relationships are in focus. Passion and romance are on our minds, and in case we forgot, there is always Valentine’s Day to remind us of our desire to share our lives with others. This month’s Querent is a woman we will call Elizabeth. Elizabeth has concerns about her budding romance, a long distance relationship with a man who seems to hold some promise of development both in terms of commitment and attraction, but with whom she remains uncertain. Pursuit of this relationship will entail risks and she is proceeding with caution, and looking for guidance for the long term growth of this relationship, any potential obstacles. She would also like to gain a sense of where his intentions lie in this relationship. In honor of Elizabeth and the atmosphere of Valentine’s romance, this month’s deck is The Lover’s Tarot. Her reading reveals the Four of Gems, Queen of Gems and The Death card, reversed.

A quick word about the much feared “Death” card before we proceed. In all realms outside of carnival fortune teller scenes in pop media, the Death card is not literal. It portends significant transformations that may bring great loss or sadness in the course of their progression, but it is not a literal indicator of the end of one’s life.

Public service announcement aside, let’s return to Elizabeth’s relationship question. First, to examine the theme for this relationship in the near future, the Four of Gems. This card’s suit is unique to The Lover’s Tarot and in other traditional decks may be termed “coins” or “pentacles”. The Four of Gems indicates that this relationship grows out of a desire for security. Some of this desire is physical security in all its forms- the comfort of knowing each partner is there, the satisfaction of finding balance and harmony in a partnership and the stability of combining material resources, abilities, and assets. There is a sense of satisfaction and harmony in this relationship especially in tangible ways that each partner seems to provide what the other has been missing. There is a feeling with this card that this relationship is grounded in practical matters and it may seem that mundane issues such as money and property are of great concern. There is an equal stake for both partners but much of this relationship rests on material and physical security. The desire for stability is essential and so both partners may look to each other for such stability. There is a strong attraction but its primary focus is grounding rather than emotional. It seems this relationship will develop in a way that emphasizes problem solving, practicality and sharing resources. A possessive side may be developing in this relationship as well however. Be mindful of red flags that this relationship is becoming more about security than actual emotional attraction. Be mindful of the attraction to what it seems you could have together trumping the attraction of how it feels to be with this person. There is potential for harmony on a material/physical/ and practical level but this stability may also yield dependency, clinging to the status quo and resisting change. There will be a desire to hold on to property, money, physical routines and comforts that potentially interferes with the emotional bond or even emotional growth as a partnership. Be very cautious about the potential for possessiveness on both sides of this relationship. It seems the tendency will be to engage in battles of will and the significant other may come to regard Elizabeth or her belongings/property or money with a sense of entitlement or ownership. Be mindful of how resources and assets are dealt with in this relationship. It seems boundaries will need to be clear to avoid stagnation and prioritizing comfort and security over growth and emotional well being. The number four will also be significant as this relationship proceeds. Be on the look out for four types of material resources that become significant to this relationship.

Although potential obstacles emerge in the prior card, the next card specifically addresses challenges this relationship will face. This card also is from the suit of Gems, and it is the Queen of Gems. This suggests that a woman in the role of material provider, business manager, money manager or property owner may be providing financial security or assistance but in doing so is posing a challenge to this relationship. This is likely to be a woman of either dark hair and features or grey/white hair. This would be a woman who is mature, serious but also generous who has developed comfortable means for herself and often invests in others as a way to promote growth and material security. This person or her relationship to either partner is hindering this relationship. There is also a potential warning here for Elizabeth, that this relationship may be focused more on a desire by her significant other to be taken care of financially and that placing too much emphasis on the material assets or property is taking away from the romance in this relationship.

The final card is the Death card, and it is reversed. Being a Major Arcana card elevates the significance of this card. There is a large transition underway for both partners, although it seems particularly to impact the gentleman. This change is being resisted. It seems circumstances surrounding this man are forcing him to confront a significant loss and undergo a deep transition that will further his own growth and development, but he is resisting this change. With this card following the Queen of Gems, it seems as if a connection to the material support of this authority figure, or perhaps the abundance available through a workplace setting, previous relationship with a heavy emphasis on money, or generous business oriented family member, are keeping him in a situation where he is materially successful but not able to make changes to facilitate deeper personal growth- including full commitment to this relationship. It seems as if currents are pulling him in the direction of making a fresh start, committing to a substantial change primarily impacting his life, identity and values, but he seems to resist this change or to shut down rather than opening up to new possibilities, especially ones that he feels threaten his security. For some reason he perceives this relationship as requiring him to give up some measures of his own security or comfort in order to embrace transition and growth. It also seems that severing ties or commitments which seem largely financial in nature, with the Queen of Gems is perceived by him as a threat or at least as a very overwhelming experience and he is resisting this.

It seems that this relationship has the potential for development and growth but the focus stems from a practical need for security found in this partnership that could easily become dependency/possessiveness if not careful. Business or monetary obligations possibly related to a female authority figure pose an obstacle to the further development of the relationship and a major lifestyle change on the horizon for the gentleman in the picture is being hindered by his own resistance to embrace change that would affect his way of life, especially in terms of creating financial or material risk. It is important to bear in mind that both partners have choices to make. Evaluating this relationship for what is apparent and intuited and then deciding how much energy, time, patience are given to this relationship is a process for Elizabeth. Meanwhile, her significant other also has important choices to consider especially in regards to his ability to be receptive to the changing tides around him which seem to be setting the stage for transformation and initiation in his own life but which he is not currently embracing openly. Knowledge of these patterns can help ease into transition and take healthy risks to allow one’s self to advance personally, spiritually, and in a partnership. It should be noted however that if one person, say Elizabeth, awaits the receptivity and openness of her partner yet over time it appears he still remains unyielding, holding on to a way of life that he has the potential to outgrow both personally and for the sake of this relationship- then she may have to accept that this relationship is not moving in a direction that would allow for optimal growth as a partnership. Based on this information Elizabeth can discuss her feelings about the direction this relationship is taking and attempt to openly engage her significant other in a conversation about his fears, the potential for this transition and what is holding him back. Through this type of communication there is a potential to work through the insecurities that bring such resistance to change but it will require patience as it seems this person views this transition as very overwhelming. When a card like the Death card is reversed it suggests blocked energy and in knowing this, there are actions both the Querent or others involved can attempt in order to resume a flow of energy conducive to progress not stagnation. Communication and faith can be key elements to reversing the Death card which would bring an open acceptance of a new beginning, one paving the way for growth and development on a significant level.

Best of luck to Elizabeth, and thanks for participating in this month’s column! As always, no matter where you are reading this from all readings are for entertainment only in accordance with New York State law.

The year 2012 ended with a number of intense national crises, from the devastation brought to the East Coast by Hurricane Sandy, to a number of violent tragedies in America’s schools, and malls. Americans also faced anxieties over the uncertainties of the economy with constant debate over the approaching “fiscal cliff”. Such times of intense stress amplify the sensitivity of human beings to their environments, and the delicate but important balance of mental and emotional health. This months’ Querent, a man we will call Jermain, writes in the midst of battling feelings of hopelessness and disappointment which he has not been able to shake after a series of crises affected him over the past few years. He asks how he can find serenity and emotional well being after numerous personal changes and crises over the past few years, and what do aside from medication therapy to find healing.

To Jermain, and anyone out there affected by the weight of depression or anxiety, it is important to emphasize that readings are not substitute for therapeutic interventions, medication, or medical advice. Working with supports in your community is of utmost importance in helping to find closure and healing in the midst of difficult times. While Jermain writes that he is working on these issues with the help of a medical provider, he has yet to find full closure and is hoping to get a different perspective from a more spiritual approach. This reading is intended to complement Jermain’s current efforts and not as substitution for professional or medical advice.

It is worth noting in Jermain’s reading that while shuffling a “Leaper” emerges, this is a card that both signifies the readiness of the deck to “speak” and also will usually pertain to the issue being asked about. It is the Six of Swords, right side up, while the rest of the cards are reversed. This clearly validates Jermain’s feelings of being stuck after a loss. What is interesting to note is that the Leaper, the card which is right side up, is a card of resolution and compromise. The Six of Swords shows a man rowing a boat with a woman and child. There are a number of swords standing on the back of the boat and where the water had been rocky with waves it becomes clear as new horizons approach. This suggests change, loss, compromise, and redirecting thoughts and energy toward new ground. It suggests some defeat, but not of ending. Rather this is a card of cutting losses and moving on- but still being surrounded by loved ones. Whether Jermain faced the loss of property, job, relationship, or the need to take charge in a difficult situation (after all in this card the man is steering, the family are not) it is ultimately a card of moving away from the conflict, the trouble is in the past and the burden is one of readjustment. Numerous changes that likely centered on a few major events were likely to have caused a loss or change of will and some movement on or away from a source of stress, but this would likely have felt like defeat. It was not, it was actually having the wisdom to know when to leave a bad scene and start over. It is the starting over under duress that is often felt as the defeat.

The next three cards are reversed, but two are Major Arcana cards suggesting significance to Jermain’s personal growth. Before responding to the individual card meanings, it is noteworthy that both Major Arcana cards are the cards of light and life force- the Sun and Moon. The Sun is the projective power of will and expression of the self within the visible world. The Moon is the subtle card of the subconscious, of what is repressed, esoteric or secret. Both indicate patterns of relating to the world around Jermain and suggest through their reversal that Jermain has not been able to express himself in his surroundings, that his growth and ability to give and take in relationships have been stunted or blocked. He has been stalled from both projecting light into the world and also from receiving it. A closer look at the first card- the Sun, reversed, suggests that Jermain has been disconnected from a vital source of hope and faith and that while he is surrounded by fortunate resolutions and positive opportunities, there seems to be a dark cloud following him blocking his ability to relish the joy of these occasions.

The Sun is a very positive card of success, health, vitality, growth, creativity and assertion of one’s unique individual energy into the world, brightening the lives of others and radiating with life. Even reversed The Sun is a beneficial force. In Jermain’s case however, the disconnection from faith and hope have the effect of blocking the Sun’s benevolent rays. So Jermain, it looks like in many ways you have been fortunate, things have often turned in your favor or in promotion of your success, health, advancement and well being, but disconnection from your previously strong source of creativity, hope, faith and vitality have diminished the ability to be open to receiving the blessings around you.

The Sun appearing in a reading is a good omen. It portends success, vitality, health and strong spirit. Even its reversal need not deplete the vibrant energy of the sun. It suggests blockage, perhaps even depression or a setback that while decreasing vitality and joy does not destroy its original source. Remember, the Sun remains powerful even when blocked by clouds. The challenge for Jermain is to overcome the residue of his recent difficulties and seek out the sunshine. When powerful cards appear reversed it often suggests stagnation or blockage. One of the best ways to bring energy back into flow is through action-particularly different action. The Sun is a card of projected force and action as well which further calls forth the need to express energy. It is a call to act, to choose, to seek and to unburden his spirit from past disappointments through action. In recovery circles the saying “easy does it” is often followed up by “but do it”. The inertia or depression that has recently plagued Jermain can begin to dissipate if he takes measures to recall the “but do it” portion of this saying. Any action, any change in routine, any venture or risk to call forth the creative expression is one more step in the direction of breaking the powerful bonds of negativity, self doubt, self pity, disappointment and depression. Jermain is being called upon to work with what he has, which may fall short of his expectations but actually still contains a number of significant blessings. Seeking out the joy, becoming more physically active, emphasizing the successes he has achieved all will help immensely to restore the spiritual connection to a source of hope and faith from which Jermain has become disconnected.

The Moon appears next and is also reversed. This suggests details unknown and mysteries at work. It also deals with receptivity or the need to be more receptive. It goes hand in hand with the Sun card in this reading in some ways as Jermain has not only cut himself off from sources of joy, hope and positivity, retreating within himself instead, but has also put up barriers to receiving from others. He may not even realize it but may have tuned out the feedback of others and disconnected from his intuition as well. When the Moon appears it calls for the need to open awareness on intuitive levels. When it is reversed however it is quite common that intuition has become confused with knee jerk emotional reactions. Jermain may be acting on what he believes are intuitive urges but which may in fact are the immediate and primal response to fear and mistrust. The Moon reversed suggests a tendency to act without being fully informed. The Moon is a reflector of light and can also carry the trickster energy of illusion. Jermain’s suffering and perceptions may be colored by external cues that are not fully factual but trigger strong emotional responses. It will be very important for Jermain to question urges to react to his environment.

It will be important for him to spend time contemplating and reflecting on his emotions and continually work to discern the difference between his immediate emotional reaction and the objective information he does have. It is likely that Jermain is experiencing a drive to continually react to situational or environmental triggers without allowing time to reveal the full story. He may be acting without having the full picture. It is important to not rush to judgment. In some ways it may seem paradoxical, but as important as movement, activity and change will be to stimulate Jermain’s energy and harness the energy of the Sun’s creativity and vitality, it is equally important to refrain from impulsive reactions to emotional cues. The emotional cues at this time may not be serving Jermain and are likely contributing to anxiety and fear that could easily be taken out of context. Changes, action and spontaneity should be based in positive creativity. Physical exercise, pursuit of hobbies that are creative but involve movement, investing time and energy in new projects, and spiritually grounding practices that reconnect Jermain to higher creative sources are going to be very helpful. Outright reaction or anxiety based action is not the point and will be detrimental. Just as Jermain will need to seek out hope through connection with the Sun card, it will also be important for him to spend time in contemplation and reflection to recognize his intuition- not the same as fear or emotional reaction- but his deeper connection to his environment and subconscious.

There is a deeper purpose to Jermain’s recent trials and patience and faith will be called upon to make use of these challenges, while action and stimulation are needed to not get stuck in them. Do not confuse contemplation with brooding however. It seems that stagnation has occurred in part because of too much time in isolation or too much focus on what the mind may pass as fact which is merely illusion or individual perspective. Another adage from recovery circles speaks to the definition of “fear” “false emotions appearing real”. The Moon reversed may have brought an emphasis on this brand of fear which now must be put into perspective in the larger context of Jermain’s present life and even his perceptions. Contemplation should be gradual and involve processes such as prayer, journaling, meditation and reflection as at this time Jermain’s immediate inner landscape- his superficial thoughts and interpretations may be disconnected, confused or fueled by illusions based in fear or anxiety. He will need to reach beyond the initial fear based landscape to harness deeper meaning in these trials. Jermain’s strengths in this regard are his creativity, imagination and sensitivity, but these talents are working against him. At this time the distortion may be self perpetuating rather than a response to actual threat.

The final card is from the Minor Arcana. It is the Four of Pentacles, also reversed in this reading. It suggests a need to let go. The card of Pentacles usually connects to one’s finances, work, material wealth or physical, tangible assets. Since Jermain is concerned with his emotional state it is likely that external tangible markers are being held onto tightly in order to try to preserve emotional security. In other words, in the absence of emotional grounding and security, Jermain may be seeking validation through outside markers. He may have sought status, money, career growth or acquisition of material goods to mask the inner turmoil he has been feeling, but this will not soothe his feelings, nor will clinging to these material sources of stability bear fruit. It will be important for Jermain to let go, release the souvenirs of his suffering. A commitment is required at this time- letting go of the comfort and certainty of the negativity which may have manifested in Jermain’s life in routines or patterns that he does not like but has come to recognize as comfortable. It is possible that some of these routines, or markers of security have provided a barrier to “safely” disconnect from others, keeping the attention on maintaining the status quo at the sacrifice of greater personal growth. This card is promising a return to real stability and harmony on numerous levels but especially manifesting in the physical sense of security and stable routines if Jermain will take the risk and let go of the mental and in some ways physical burden he has been carrying. This is easier said than done as Jermain may have built walls around himself to protect against seemingly overwhelming circumstances and stressors, but these barriers are not only no longer needed, they are posing a distraction and obstacle to accessing a truer and more sustainable source of faith.

Jermain will be able to enact changes to his reactions, his routines and his perspective that will allow light to re-emerge in his daily life. In fact a big part of this process will be finding the balance between taking downtime to reflect and contemplate before acting and taking the risk to enact small consistent changes that will foster growth, creativity and spiritual connection. Caution should be exercised in not confusing assumption or emotions for fact but remaining open to intuition. Jermain should also begin to actively seek out confirmation of blessings in his life, giving less focus to past negativity and disappointments. He is standing on the threshold of new beginnings and at this point it is inner doubt, negative self evaluation and preconceived evaluations of others that pose the largest obstacles. It will be essential for Jermain to find constructive ways to begin to let go of the past. By recognizing that which he has held on to too tightly, he can begin the healing process of releasing the energy of hurt, expectations, emotion and stress that have been weighing on him. Creative and active routines such as exercise, Tai Chi, walking, writing etc can be useful in rediscovering joyful routines and breaking out of the stagnation he has faced. It is very important that he clear himself of past patterns however as he is stifling his true potential by focusing intently on the past and ignoring opportunities that surround him.

Favorite Things 2012

As many of you know, it was established last year that I am the new Oprah, particularly when it comes to the task of favoriting things. That’s right, I said favoriting. That would be the act of naming something a favorite. Not just anyone can name something “favorite”, you know. Obviously I can, and last year I told Oprah to pack it in. Honestly, the fact that she did it again this year is a little wounding to my ego. However, I shall not let it keep me from doing the thing you’ve been waiting for all year….. announcing my Favorite Things of 2012!

Thanks to the folks at Skylight Press a favorite book of mine, and in my opinion an occult classic, got reprinted, “The Magical Battle of Britain”. Following Germany’s invasion of Poland, Dion Fortune, started a magical working by mail designed to stop Germany’s efforts to expand into Britain. “The Magical Battle of Britain” provides a rare glimpse into Fortune’s real world workings and a unique perspective of the war. “The Magical Battle of Britain” isn’t just a book that is owned, it is a book that is cherished.

Once Margaret Pearson Ph.D separated the core text from all its associated commentaries, she didn’t just have a nifty book about the I Ching on her hands, she had a revolution. “The Original I Ching: An Authentic Translation of the Book of Changes” shows an early China with an ungendered meaning of yin and powerful, authoritative women. Of course it also shows you how to work with the I Ching, and it does so in clear, easy to understand language. Any woman interested in learning more about the I Ching technique or history, or both, would do well to get “The Original I Ching”. In my mind, I view it as one of the great female empowerment works of the year.

I love it when things don’t conform to stereotypes. For instance, people talk about vegans as if they are walking killjoys. They’re gaunt hippies, reeking of incense, who live to hover over you and make you feel guilty about you and the “murders” you commit. (Which I already knew wasn’t true thanks to a few kick ass friends, but you know what I’m sayin’ people.) Thankfully there are folks like Brian Patton, aka “The Sexy Vegan” around to shake things up and step all over some of those lame, outdated stereotypes. Patton’s cookbook, “The Sexy Vegan Cookbook: Extraordinary Food from an Ordinary Dude”, is filled with good humor and recipes that can be enjoyed whether you’re a vegan or not. I just want to go on the record one more time that any man that can work even a single drop of rum into a breakfast recipe is all right in my book. (Sailor’s Oatmeal with Glazed Walnuts)

Again, I love to be surprised. When I had received a review copy of “Mystery Teachings from the Living Earth: An Introduction to Spiritual Ecology” by John Michael Greer I assumed I was in for a lot of the Earth has so much to teach us man. Instead what I found was one of the best introductions to the Western occult tradition in like, ever! I learned an important lesson about assuming from that book. Primarily that I don’t really have to admit to it in my book reviews!

He was on the list last year, he’s on the list this year. As long as Inner Traditions continues to publish his books here in the United States I imagine he will continue to show up on my favorites. He’s Claude Lecouteux and he’s written many of my favorite books, whether they’ve had the opportunity to show up on lists or not. Let’s focus on this year, shall we? This year we’re talking about “The Secret History of Poltergeists and Haunted Houses: From Pagan Folklore to Modern Manifestations.” Lecouteux is notoriously thorough and this book is no exception. You cannot discuss poltergeists or how people would rid themselves of poltergeists without first spending a chapter thoroughly pinning down the definition of poltergeist. Trust me, with Claude Lecouteux you’re in for an informative and entertaining ride with the subject matter.

I love tarot decks. I can’t imagine anyone who is interested in the occult that isn’t intrigued by the cards at least a little. Despite having only rudimentary knowledge and an utter lack of skill with tarot, I am fortunate enough to see plenty of tarot decks. I reviewed many this year and they were all so amazing, but there was one that spoke to me. I can’t fully explain, and maybe there are some tarot readers out there who can say this experience has happened to them, but this tarot deck just filled me with such awe and wonder it made want to work with it, right then, right that moment. It’s the “Ghosts & Spirits Tarot” by Lisa Hunt. Each card depicts a different spirit, ghost, or liaison between the earthly and spiritual realms from folklore and legend. The amount of research that went into the deck had to be dizzying. The artwork is beautiful and often brings a sense of light to darkened spirits. I loved the “Ghosts & Spirits Tarot” so much I bought a second deck signed by the creator/artist!

I was totally blown away by “Power Crystals: Spiritual and Magical Practices, Crystal Skulls, and Alien Technology” by John DeSalvo Ph.D This book has EVERYTHING you’d ever want to know about quartz, and as a fan of quartz that makes me happy. What it is, its history, how to care for it, its use in meditation, and more. Add to that a fascinating look at crystal skulls and you have a favorite of 2012. DeSalvo’s blend of science and spirituality appeals to both my skeptical brain and my seeker’s heart.

Joma Sipe’s occult bona fides are certainly in order. At fifteen he began studying Theosophy and the works of H.P. Blavatsky and Annie Besant, and from there Rudolf Steiner, P.D. Ouspensky and more. At seventeen Sipe got involved with a school called “The Gnostic Movement”. In his late twenties he practiced ritual and practical magic with another mystical school. Inspired by “Autobiography of a Yogi” Sipe traveled India learning about Hindu religion. At the same time he was reading Eckhart Tolle’s “The Power of Now”, which then led him to study “A Course in Miracles”. Sipe takes that knowledge and funnels it into amazing works of art. Making “Soul of Light: Works of Illumination” a beautiful, stunning favorite of 2012.

I don’t know about any of you, but every now and then throughout the course of my life I’ve considered setting up or rearranging my home with the assistance of a Feng Shui book. Then you go to a book store and start flipping through some books on the subject and it’s huge, overwhelming, utterly complex……I think you get the idea. Then I got a review copy of “Feng Shui Your Life” by Jayme Barrett. It’s exhilarating! Everything is easy to understand, you’re given simple changes you can make right away, and you’re not made to feel as if doom awaits you if you can’t (or opt not to) make every change in the book. “Feng Shui Your Life” makes you want to immediately stop what you’re doing and start working your way through the book. I’ve never had a book about Feng Shui inspire that before, have you?

This last favorite is such a surprise that no one even knows I’ve read it yet! We’re coming up on the end of the year and that’s why now is the PERFECT time to pick up a copy of “Everyday Witch Book of Rituals” by Deborah Blake. Blake’s book features rituals for new and full moons, Sabbats, Handfastings, Wiccanings, Eldering/Cronings, Passing Over, and Rebirthings. Of course Blake wouldn’t just give you raw rituals and call it a day. “Everyday Witch Book of Rituals” discusses why we do rituals, appropriate etiquette when doing group rituals, how to convert rituals from group to lone practitioner and back again and more! Also, don’t fear, Magic the Cat makes many appearances. With everything you need for a year of magical ritual, and Deborah Blake’s good humor, NOW is the time for “Everyday Witch Book of Rituals”! Seriously. Go!

And there you have it folks, after much agonizing, list making, and debate, these are The Magical Buffet’s Favorite Things of 2012. So now go out and finish your holiday shopping, or perhaps do a little shopping for you. Be sure to tell the shopkeepers Rebecca sent you!

As the dark days of winter draw near, December’s Querent, who we will call Milton, is seeking personal enlightenment. He writes that he has always had a fascination with the supernatural and wants to know if he will ever have an experience that will prove with certainty that supernatural phenomenon exists and if possible when this will occur. Fascinating question Milton! The three card reading resulted in the drawing of the Moon, numbered 18, the Ace of Pentacles, and the reversed King of Cups.

The Moon is a Major Arcana card, which means it holds significance for Milton’s life path and personal development. It is no surprise that such a card arises in this reading as Milton is asking a question of value to his spiritual and personal growth. He is asking about a matter of belief, or more specifically of confirmation of beliefs. The Moon card deals with matters of the subconscious, unconscious, and intuition. On a gut level, Milton senses there is more out there than meets the eye. In particular the Moon depicts that which is often clearer in the dark, when the distraction of daylight is no longer present. Milton’s past experiences and interest in the supernatural are likely to stem from experiences that triggered his own psychic intuition, and served as an internal guide in times of darkness- both literally and symbolically. Experiences with phenomenon including astral travel, déjà vu, astrological or UFO phenomena and precognitive or instructive dreams are likely to have taken place before. Likewise phenomena that prompts attention to the subconscious and psychic realms but in a way that is subtle, behind the scenes- a slight nudging rather than a neon sign. These experiences likely triggered the subconscious to pay attention, something special was occurring, but existed in just enough subtlety for the conscious mind to doubt, analyze or rationalize. The realm of the Moon is the realm of symbolism, instinct and magnetic attraction of situations and conditions that stand to teach one if one is receptive and open. It is however a shadowed realm, it is one that requires an individual to connect the dots, draw their own conclusions slowly over time, and trust their intuition rather than reacting to their emotions- especially fear and doubt. It is also a realm of illusion. The light of the Moon is reflected and therefore transmits light from another source- but shadows can play tricks with the eyes. It is possible that past supernatural encounters occurred that drew on the experience of others or required research or networking with others for confirmation, but that this confirmation or even shared experience still left room for multiple explanations or possible doubts. In regards to finding proof of the supernatural- the Moon would likely indicate phenomenon related to the sky, psychic intuition or psychic dreams, experiences related to UFOs but that requires patience, instinct, and receptivity as the Moon does not deliver a solid message all at once but gradually nurtures a series of clues that unfold cyclically over time. It is likely however that experiences related to dreams, nocturnal experiences, and perhaps involving the sky such as UFO sightings have been brought to Milton’s awareness and maybe even personal experience- but with enough room for the conscious mind to bring doubt or question the receptivity of the subconscious to such phenomenon. Milton should try to remain open- view these past experiences like clues on a lifelong mission to uncover hidden esoteric realities.

Ace of Pentacles

The next card is the Ace of Pentacles. This is a card of mundane matters but also of tangibility and practicality. It is very different from the Moon card as the Ace of Pentacles shows physical attainment and tangible proof. There will be or perhaps has already begun to be- an experience related to the physical body, physical sensations or material property that will help to confirm beliefs in the supernatural. This is likely to relate in some way to your work or money as the Pentacles often relate to one’s resources or valuables. The material feeling of the Pentacles also describes this as an event that brings proof that Milton will be able to touch or see manifest in the physical. This card not only shows Milton receiving physical or tangible evidence he has sought for his belief in the supernatural, but is also an indicator of a quest fulfilled. A physical manifestation brings the answer to the question and confirmation that a desire dreamed about or wished for will materialize. This evidence may impact his physical body, material goods or property as well.

The following card is the King of Cups, and it is reversed. It is likely that the evidence Milton seeks will evolve from a trying time involving the well being either of himself or of a man he looks to as a father figure or nurturing male authority figure. A challenge to the emotional well being brings a quest that is not primarily supernatural, but a quest for emotional healing and restoration of emotional balance. It is through this difficult time that emotional security will be challenged but enlightenment and conviction in beliefs in the paranormal will come to be expressed. Some type of extraordinary communication or intuitive connection made with another- possibly a male family member, father, or father figure- likely brings this confirmation but the reversal suggests that this is not immediately felt as an accomplishment in Milton’s search for proof of the supernatural, but rather is initially felt as a loss, and an emotionally upsetting or unsettling experience. This will be an experience likely to reach Milton on an emotional level and may challenge the feeling of emotional control or empowerment at first. Part of this experience will involve a challenge to bring renewed emotional security and healing. When Court cards appear it is often an indicator of traits within the Querent’s personality but may also be mirrored through experiences impacting others close to the Querent. In this case a challenge faced by the father or a paternal nurturing figure will have an impact on Milton causing him to come to closer terms with his own emotional vulnerability and seek healing and a different perspective, this is an opportunity for Milton himself to grow in emotional empowerment and stability by experiencing this process.

For the portion of the question asking about timing, this is a common question in Tarot inquiries that can be difficult to judge. The initial card being the Moon card suggests some experiences have already occurred that are of significance and may have even occurred repeatedly on some type of patterned basis. The Ace of Pentacles indicates harvest and therefore align this event with the fall or a time of great material abundance that Milton will experience. As a side note unless a reading is intended to cover a specific time period i.e. “in the next month what will happen in my workplace”, it is useful to take the information from the reading as guidance and avoid narrowing one’s vision down to a specific date. For some patterns reflected in a Tarot reading are emerging based on the Querent’s actions and so if first a Querent is going to move, and then by moving be connected with a potential lover, the date on which the move occurs may not be as substantial in the larger picture than the act of moving itself. Also when individuals become aware of a date it can become a distraction- if one is regarding “May 3rd” as the date on which they will fall in love, they may then be so fixated on every person they meet that day being “the one” that they don’t allow processes to unfold naturally that would bring the individual to the right place and time to connect with their future significant other. As a general guideline it is best to consider time frames with as much detachment as possible, as things the conscious mind will try to prompt one to do to avoid/hasten an event can cause confusion when it comes to reaching one’s goal on a timeline anticipated ahead of time. In general from this reading, this is an event that would likely occur in the fall, and on the 1st (Ace) 18th (Moon) or 9th (1+8) day of the month, but in what proximity to the present is difficult to ascertain with Tarot.

Best of luck to Milton in his quest for enlightenment, and thanks for participating in this month’s column! As always, no matter where you are reading this from all readings are for entertainment only in accordance with New York State law. To the reading audience, thank you again for your readership and have a happy, safe and spiritually fulfilling holiday season.
