Moonlight Tarot’s Question Corner: Mystical Answers to Mundane Inquiries

By Angela Kaufman, Moonlight Tarot LLC

Allegedly, March will bring spring, at least according to the calendar. As we all look forward to sunny days, this month’s Querent would like to know the potential for her budding romance. A woman we will call Esther has been enjoying a gradually developing courtship and is beginning to wonder about the long term commitment potential as well as any potential roadblocks in this relationship.

First, Esther should be applauded for her approach, as her inquiry reflects her awareness that regardless of indications from a Tarot reading, she is ultimately the one to direct her own destiny. The Tarot can help Esther anticipate strengths and set backs along the way, yet the development of a relationship is like the growth of a garden and numerous factors contribute to a successful harvest.

But fall is a long way off, we are approaching the season of growth and Esther’s reading reflects this. The initial impressions are of light, excitement, and adventure. It feels like this relationship brings invigorating surprises and that it has brought rejuvenation and hope to Esther. It also feels like this couple is growing in comfort and familiarity with each other. This relationship feels committed and feels like it has strong potential for long term growth. The Tarot cards drawn for this reading are the 9 of Cups, the 2 of Wands, and The Fool.

The 9 of Cups reflects the happiness this pair finds in this relationship and suggests this is a match that meets Esther’s standards in many ways. Contentment and celebration are also suggested by this card, as well as a sense that this couple is very comfortable sitting at home together, but is more likely to get out, travel and have an active social life. Over about 3-9 months this relationship develops smoothly.

I feel that within the next 3-9 months the euphoric phase of this relationship will unfold followed by an important decision. I feel like this decision, represented by the 2 of Wands, deals with a change in direction that requires compromise and agreement in this partnership. It seems that development in a life area other than the relationship will require a move, it feels career related, and that this is a significant turning point for this couple. Their partnership can continue together, it feels like the commitment to this change is mutual. It seems initially that without moving in together right away, Esther’s partner will be spending more and more time in her home, it seems like living together without officially living together, until this point of change where it feels more like a commitment is made official but part of this requires venturing out of the comfort of familiar surroundings. The Two of Wands also suggests an opportunity that brings career advancement and coincides with growth in the relationship. It also indicates travel together, frequent adventures and a common starting point from which this relationship can develop.

The Fool is a significant card and bears no indication for the intelligence of Esther or her partner. Rather it signifies the beginning of a journey. I feel this card speaks to the journey for both partners although this is typically a carefree, independent energy. It feels like spontaneity and willingness to be open to travelling where opportunities offer without excess baggage from the past. This can have a twofold significance. Letting go of emotional baggage from the past in order to fully embrace this new relationship, as well as not being hindered by excess obligations, being able to move with the changes presented in this relationship. The Fool is about liberation and this relationship seems to follow a course of being inspiring, carefree and liberating. Esther will be confronted with new ideas and plans that may seem risky or out of the blue. She can expect good things to develop if she maintains an open mind. Faith in herself and courage to let go of what has not worked in the past will help her transcend limitations. This is not the time to give in to self doubt or fear based thinking.

In regard to any obstacles in this relationship, nothing from this reading stands out as a red flag or major issue to overcome. The only indicators of a challenge are the indicators of change requiring an open mind. I feel like there are aspects of Esther, or her partner’s career that potentially distracts from the relationship at times- particularly long hours or an unusual schedule seem to play a role in this, but it does not feel like this diminishes the relationship. When the time comes for change to take place it feels like relocation to someplace new is on the horizon, Miami feels related to this but Esther should be open minded to exploring the options as they present without feeling confined or limited to options that were not part of the original plan. It feels like faith in a major move will bring advancement both in the relationship and in career. It feels like an official commitment is made in the process of this transition and this solidifies long term potential.

Best of luck to Esther in all of her future endeavors. Remember, no matter where you are reading this, in accordance with NYS law all readings are intended for entertainment only.

Geek Month in Review: February 2014

More ice and snow…

How Was the Expedition?
Found in the antarctic hut of explorer Captain Scott, left there over 100 years ago, was a clump of cellulose nitrate negatives Shackleton took of his expedition. See the developed pictures!

Blue-light Zombies
The City of Los Angeles is changing their sodium streetlights for LED ones — huge savings on energy, right? Well, yes, but it will seriously mess with filmmakers doing street shots in LA — the LED lights are heavily blue-tinted, as opposed to the amber of the sodium lights.
Then there’s the possible effect of LED lights on sleep and attention-span, leading to insomniacs wandering the streets.

Lighter Than Water, Stronger Than Steel
Welcome to the new age of material science, brought to you by Science! and 3D printing. Oh, and lasers.

Not This Earth
Here’s a roundup of “the most unusual alternate history novels ever written”, or in other words, here’s a list of popular alternate Earth novels.

Storm Photos That Make You Want to Run for the Basement
Crazy great photos, obviously taken in the midwest, of some storms as they really start to get going.

Vertigo-Inducing Photos of the Crumbling Remnants of the Soviet Union
See some crazy (CRAZY) urban explorers as they go that extra mile to climb to perilous heights on old industrial USSR stuff, and take photos of it all. Pretty breathtaking. Also some pretty awesome shots from underground parts, too. Warning: if you get vertigo easily, hold onto your chair.

Super-Geek Shroud
Hand-stitched portrayal of all 6 episodes (however much we might wish it to be only 3) of the Star Wars saga on a shroud, now selling for $20,000 to a gallery in LA.

Buildings That Might Have Been
Take a look at this article and then imagine if some of these buildings had actually been built. We could have visited the giant wall-like building in Chicago, designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, clad in plates of etched copper. Or visited the observation deck on the mile-high skyscraper The Illinois (another Wright project). Or seen the hollow pyramid-buildings, sheltering gardens and expressways. There’s even a Civic Center that combined all transportation into one place: trains, cars, and even airplanes, landing on the top level.

Joker Armor
And no, not that modern junk — Medieval Joker armor. You have to see it to believe it. Creepy as heck.

7th Grader Builds Braille Printer With LEGOs
Kid uses $350 worth of LEGOSs to build a printer that does Braille, and what the hell was I doing in 7th grade? Reading, I think. Maybe a video game or two. Holy crap.

Voynich Manuscript Decoded??
One of the most mysterious and baffling manuscripts ever penned may have begun to be deciphered. The Voynich manuscript has tantalized scholars for centuries. If the professor in question has actually got a handle on the document, it will be huge.
Check out the Wikipedia article on it for the skinny on what the Voynich Manuscript is.

How Big?
Want to see a quick discussion of how big the universe is? It’s like an animated bit of Cosmos. Then they start talking about the multiverse, parallels worlds with different laws of physics, and it all just combines to make your head explode. But in a fun way.

Fast and Easy Daily Divination

By Deborah Blake

Lots of people read their horoscope every morning, but for many of us, that is the only bit of “checking in” we do. After all, few people have the time (or inclination) to do a full tarot spread with their morning coffee. And mostly, we don’t need that much detailed information. Luckily, there are lots of fast and easy ways to get a quick hint at what your day holds, or what you need to know to make the most of it.

Years ago, when I was practicing with my first coven, my then-high priestess had us do an interesting experiment. Every day for a month, we pulled one rune stone at the beginning of the day. We wrote down the stone, and any flashes of intuition we got when we looked at it, and then checked in at the end of the day to see if there was, in fact, any relationship between the two. Not surprisingly, there often was.

This also turned out to be a great way of learning the runes themselves. I started out having to look up the meanings of each rune in a book [my favorite is Lisa Peschel’s A Practical Guide to the Runes—it’s old, but it is easy to use and understand], but by the end of the month, I was much more familiar with them. If you’re interested in becoming better acquainted with the stones or any other form of divination, try doing something like this. It’s a fun and practical way to learn. Either pull one out of a bag, if that’s what you store them in, or place them in a small bowl and just close your eyes and grab one.

If rune stones aren’t your thing, you can do this with tarot cards instead. If you’re not used to using the cards, I suggest starting with something basic like the classic Rider-Waite Tarot. That’s the one I started with, lo these many years ago, and I have been reading professionally for ages with this one pack. [It’s a bit battered by now, but it works so well for me, I’m rarely tempted to switch to something else, despite the bevy of beautiful decks out there.] However, there are lots of variations on the tarot card deck, and you can pick whichever one seems to “speak” to you the most loudly.

As with the rune stones, you can start your day by shuffling the deck and picking out a card at random. Sometimes one will even jump out of the deck at you. You can either ask a question (“What does my day hold?” “What do I need to know today?”) or just see what comes up. If you are dealing with something tricky, you can ask a specific question, like “Should I go out on a date with that hunky guy at the office?”

There are plenty of alternatives for those who don’t have or don’t like either rune stones or tarot cards. I have a number of interesting decks that I use for inspiration, answers, or just a way to get in touch with spirit quickly and easily.

One of my favorites, which I’ve used numerous times in ritual with my group Blue Moon Circle, is the Goddess Inspiration Oracle deck, by Kris Waldherr. She’s well known for her beautiful goddess-themed artwork, and this deck is filled with amazing images, as well as lovely descriptions of the 80 goddesses featured on the cards—yet another way to learn while being inspired and guided.

The Conscious Spirit Oracle Deck by Kim Dreyer

My current favorite was a Yule gift from my friend Rebecca Elson of this very blog, The Magical Buffet. The Conscious Spirit Oracle Deck by Kim Dreyer has lovely pictures and inspiring affirmations. I’ve taken to pulling one each morning, standing at my altar, and reading it out loud. Then I try to carry its message through the rest of my day. For instance, this morning’s card was number 18: Air Elemental. And the affirmation said, “I embrace the element of air and am open to all knowledge and wisdom.” Isn’t that a great way to start out the day? (Also, I have to do research today, so it makes a certain amount of sense.)

I’m not sure exactly what it is about the Conscious Spirit Oracle Deck that has me so captivated. Some of it is the sheer gorgeousness of the cards themselves. (Even the back of the deck is amazing.) The introduction says the deck was created “to honor, celebrate, and reconnect to Nature, Spirit and the Divine Feminine in all her forms: the angel, fairy, goddess, the maiden, mother and crone,” and it does just that. The deck (from U.S. Game Systems, which puts out many of my favorites) comes with a 44 page guidebook, and gives you the option of working through the cards from beginning to end, or using them randomly, as I have chosen to do. Kim Dreyer, who did both the illustrations and the writing, had done exactly what the introduction suggests, and created a deck that can help guide you, connect you, and inspire you. Little wonder it is my new favorite.

The simplest way to use either of these options is to choose one and simply pull one card each morning. Take a minute to focus on it, and you’re done.

To move a little more deeply (and I highly recommend trying this, at least for a month sometime), write down your card, and any thoughts or feelings you have about it, and keep track of them in a small notebook. (If you already journal, you can add this to your daily jottings.) At the end of a day, a week, or a month, take a look back and see if you can make out any patterns that could be helpful.

Asking for guidance and/or inspiration doesn’t have to be complicated or take a lot of time. You certainly don’t have to be an expert card reader to do it. And the Conscious Spirit Oracle Deck is just one option, but it is a great one.

Moonlight Tarot’s Question Corner: Mystical Answers to Mundane Inquiries

By Angela Kaufman, Moonlight Tarot LLC

The heart of winter is a great time for introspection. This month’s Querent, a woman we will call Marsha, writes to ask about whether her dream of owning her own business- a store that features services and goods-will come to fruition. Her reading indicates this dream involves life lessons and Spirit is taking the opportunity to point to these lessons as they are enacted in Marsha’s quest for her store.

In preparation for Marsha’s reading I perceive the presence of the fox, an animal guide known to her, who seems to be encouraging her to tap into her witty and outgoing nature. The cards that emerge present a message that in some ways contradicts their positions, the majority being reversed suggesting delays and obstacles, yet with meanings that suggest prosperity and advancement. The reading produced a “leaper” or a card whose fall from the deck signals time to proceed to the reading- it is the 6 of Hearts. Following this are the Two of Acorns, reversed, Empress reversed, and Five of Leaves, reversed.

Here's Angela's Core Reading

A great deal is “up in the air”. This seems particularly true because the suits that present correlate with water and air, love and inspiration but lack of grounding and action. I sense there is room to overcome these obstacles. While Marsha has a lot of work ahead of her, it seems she is nevertheless being guided to fulfill her mission, though perhaps differently than she originally dreamed.

The Six of Hearts is a card of reunification and connection to people from the past. As the leaper suggests a warm homecoming for Marsha. I do feel it is with the assistance of another- or rather two others- that things will begin to take shape. One I sense as a business savvy young man, the other seems to be a mature woman. It is not clear to me if these two are related or in what time frame they present. I feel that the woman is in the periphery, and the Empress reversed points to this. The Empress is not only abundance personified, she is also the matron figure, the stable leader and she is prosperity. Her reversal does not negate her meaning, but it does suggest her essence not being fully utilized. A strong mentor, a potential source of materials or funding, a leader whose knowledge has not been enlisted thus far. Expansion is possible but I feel this character in particular is a keystone. This is an earthy person, a practical business minded woman who nurtures growth in others. She is in some ways larger than life and may also represent an institution or agency that provides startup service. The number three will be significant and it may require three attempts that initially seem unsuccessful.

I have jumped ahead to the Empress, but….well, she’s the Empress, and commands instant attention. Back to the Two of Acorns, reversed. The Two of Acorns holds the energy of indecision, lack of movement due to a stalemate. Marsha has halted necessary actions early on in this process. This stalemate can cast doubts but Marsha will need action to overcome stagnation. Even actions that take her dream down an altered path will still break up the energy and invite movement again. Before this vision can manifest Marsha has to come to terms with why her vision has stalled. If Marsha can see her options flexibly, the struggle can be released.

Then the final card, the Five of Leaves, also reversed. Conflicting ideas and conflicting messages have kept Marsha stuck, this time the focus is not so much on the stagnant energy, but on a breakdown in communication. If Marsha is able to be receptive to communication with others, she will find ways to carry her message and refine her mission. This may require her taking alternative routes to the end goal she has in mind. It seems there are potential sources of guidance but the lines are crossed, paperwork has not gone through, in general it seems like a “Mercury Retrograde” situation. Marsha may need to be the one to round up her available mentors and foster cooperation and understanding, and she should be mindful of being pushed to defensiveness, as this may be a natural reaction to her frustration with lack of results but will not serve bringing others on board to help make this dream a reality. It seems she has several valuable connections with influential people. Review the relationships from the past, colleagues, mentors, those who have a common understanding of her business’s mission and her own talents. The turn of events will happen as a result of relationships and networking, carry the message and be open to how others can help you implement steps to make it happen.

With so much hanging in reverse I wanted to see more clearly what is required to break through the barriers. The Empress repeats, she’s opinionated like that, and another Major card, the Hanged Man, presents as well as the King of Hearts. These cards again speak to making the connections that will bring opportunities. I sense this business will form in smaller stages than Marsha may originally imagine, thus opportunities for startup may be overlooked because they do not show the end result. That is because the Hanged Man energy is asking Marsha to look at things from a different angle. Imagine a movie in which the hero is trapped, about to be demolished by his adversary, the hero puts up a commendable struggle and then reaches a moment of surrender…realizing that perhaps they will not save the day this time, perhaps the treasure is lost forever…..and in that moment of acceptance a light shines down and the answer becomes apparent. In the moment of acceptance that control is lost, empowerment is found. Marsha is not being asked to abandon her dream, she is being challenged to step away from the vision of the trophy and contend with the nature of the win itself. What better way to be in the moment than when dangling from a tree by the foot? Well, maybe that is a bit extreme. The lesson however it to take stock of the opportunities now, the talents and relationships and outlets already in place but overlooked because they don’t seem to fit the puzzle. Surrender judgments about how the process should happen and open up to the ways your calling is being shaped in the present. I sense that an initial offer or opportunity will break the ice- it will bring exposure, a foundation and from this foundation the end result can be built.

The King of Hearts, reversed and the Empress reversed also echo the role two key figures, a man and woman, although the woman carries more influence. She may be intimidating but she has resources that will be helpful. The King of Hearts is a helpful connection, there is great happiness found in this relationship, this individual expresses themselves generously and compassionately and is more understanding than the Empress figure who may be more a detached authority- a lending office or financial institution. He is a mentor building confidence and fostering relationships that help Marsha get the start she needs.

The Hanged Man is numbered 12, which echoes the pattern of the Empress, 3, as the sum of the digits equal 3. Three is significant for expansion and growth. This business may take three years to materialize fully, but these three years are significant formative stages. The next 12 months the Hanged Man is requiring Marsha to observe with acceptance the barriers present. Don’t give up on the dream, but be flexible with expectations of how it will come about. Hang in there, literally, as the solutions exist but are easily overlooked. This coming year is surrounded by indicators of relationships. Networking will be the key to release from stagnation. Marsha need to promote herself through relationships and to accept guidance from sources that previously seemed intimidating. Taking every opportunity to promote her vision, Marsha can harness the energy of the Hanged Man to explore options that arise while the bigger goal seems to be “on hold”, as these small steps will lead to the larger opportunities ahead. Paperwork and calculations may need to be reworked and the immediate stages of this business adjusted to fit the present as a starting point leading to full development of her vision in its completed form. This is not a defeat, it is simply a smaller start that gives way to connections and support that will pave the way for the end result. Marsha may need to work in collaboration with others who have conflicting opinions or some digression in verbal or written planning may take place this year- she should keep careful records and copies of paperwork and not overlook aspects of this plan that involve putting ideas to paper covering all aspects of this business- it seems likely there is part of her written plan that needs to be revised but that getting assistance putting the details in writing will be helpful.

Best of luck to Marsha, and I eagerly await the ribbon cutting ceremony! Remember, no matter where you are reading this all readings are conducted for entertainment purposes in accordance with NYS law.

American Heart Month: 3 Steps to Let Go Of Stress

By Allison Johnson RN

February is American Heart Month and if you’re stressed for any reason, you may be experiencing emotions such as frustration, overwhelm, resentment, anger, and anxiety.

The problem with these negative emotions is they can have a devastating impact on your health and well-being affecting your heart, mental clarity, productivity, and immune system. Not only that but unless released, these disempowering emotions can become trapped in your body creating emotional baggage that potentially can cause future health problems or havoc in your life.

How Anger and Caring Affects Your Immune System

A fascinating study was done at the Heart Math Institute. The study’s participants were asked to think of something that made them angry for a total of 5 minutes. They tested their blood levels over the next 6 hours and found their immune system plummeted over their baseline and did not return to the baseline within the 6 hours.

A week later the same participants returned and were asked to think of thoughts of caring for 5 minutes. That time their immune system function shot up and remained above the baseline for the same 6 hours.

Stop the Stress with the “Stop, Drop, and Roll” Method

Try the “Stop, Drop, and Roll” method to remove yourself from harm’s way and gain improved health and happiness throughout the year.

Stop and recognize you’re feeling stressed.
Drop what is disempowering you in the moment.
Roll with a method that will empower you, bringing you back to a feel good place.

Here are some techniques to help you Roll into positive emotions (choose what works for you):

• The Freeze Frame Technique from Heart Math is used to help you in the moment you experience stress. This will help you feel more balanced and effective as you deal with the stress in your life. Step away from the stressful event if you can, then shift your focus of attention to the area around your heart. Feel your breath coming in through your heart and going out the solar plexus. Make a sincere effort to activate a positive feeling. Allow yourself to feel a genuine appreciation and caring for another person, place, or thing.
Humor and laughter will help to quickly change your mood.
Choose music that will calm your soul and nurture your spirit.
Think of thoughts of gratitude or appreciation. What are you grateful for? Who or what do you appreciate?
Let go of emotional baggage with The Emotion Code.
Consider Bio-Feedback devices or smart phone apps to train yourself to more quickly shift from a state of stress to a state of peace which will increase your sense of well-being (and your immune system).
Take a walk or hike in nature.
Meditate.
Practice yoga.

Calling in Your Beloved: The Truth about Soul Mates

By Sara Wiseman

As we approach that magical day, 2/14/2014, our thoughts turn to love—or more precisely, romantic love.

It’s a concept that’s been around since medieval times, but it’s reinvented itself over the centuries. Today, when we talk about romantic love, what we usually mean is:

Your soul mate

• Your true love

• Your destiny

• Your one and only

• Love at first sight

These are terms for what is energetically referred to as a primary soul mate who’s also a romantic partner. But when we set aside all the champagne-and-chocolate that’s the hallmark of modern romance, we understand at a deeper level that these significant soul matings are karmic crossings, and they exist to teach us the lessons of soul growth.

Soul mates work on soul growth.

No matter what your age, you can look back and determine the love relationships that were significant karmic crossings in your life. In relationships that were positive, you might have been working on soul lessons such as:

Trust

• Love

• Openness

• Patience

• Selflessness

In negative or lesser relationships, you might have been working on lessons such as:

Power

• Control

• Betrayal

• Addiction

• Abuse

• Anger

• Abandonment

In either case, these karmic crossings helped you to move forward as a Divine being learning in a human lifetime.

Do we just have one soul mate?

Just as we have multiple relationships with all kinds of people, we also have multiple soul mates. In fact, everyone’s a soul mate, at some level or another!

However, most people use the term soul mate to describe the concept of primary soul mate—that one special person you’re destined to meet; who’s going to change your life, be the butter on your bread, the honey in your tea, and so forth.

Many of us will have at least one of these primary soul matings in our lifetime. Often, we’ll have a few. With divorce rates hovering at 50 percent and fewer people getting married at all, the idea of one lifetime relationship is just not part of our culture anymore. Nowadays, it’s likely that people will have several soul mates in a lifetime.

So, what happens when we meet someone who we think is a soul mate—but, over time, the relationship doesn’t work out? What happens when you split up from the person you thought was a soul mate, and then eventually, you meet another person who you are equally certain is your soul mate.

Does this mean your first partner or spouse wasn’t a soul mate after all?

No, not at all.

Both your past and current partner were soul mates. It’s just that the first soul mate you were with helped you learn a particular karmic lesson or set of lessons. Once those lessons were learned, you were ready to move to a more advanced set of lessons, with the new soul mate.

Our soul mates always match us where we are, in terms of our consciousness and heart expansion. You know the saying “like attracts like”? Well, that’s how it works. When you’re immature and not yet conscious, you attract a soul mate who’s at the same place in his/her development. When you jump levels and expand into more awareness, you meet a soul mate who can match you there.

Why soul mates separate.

Soul mates separate when they have learned the lessons they were destined to learn together. When this happens—when you’ve done all the work you can do in a particular relationship—it also means that once your karmic crossing is complete.

In other words, once you’ve completed the soul lessons you’ve been put together to learn, then the relationship is also complete. You’re ready to move forward and learn new lessons, with another partner.
Most adults have been in profoundly significant relationships that “didn’t work out” over time. It’s not because you didn’t love the person at the time, or because the person wasn’t your soul mate. It’s just that for most of us in modern culture, there’s going to be more than one karmic crossing in a lifetime.

How do you know you’ve met a soul mate?

When you meet a soul mate, you know it. There’s an immediate sense of recognition of the soul personality. Many people who have met their soul mates often describe this kind of soul recognition as a deep familiarity, sense that they already knew the person, or of “coming home.”

However, even if you recognize the soul personality, the human container may be very different from what you expected! Time and again, clients tell me of meeting primary soul mates who show up much differently from what they expected: they’re older, younger, a different race, a different culture.

They’re your perfect soul match, but they don’t look or act anything like what you expected!

The energy of soul mates.

And then, there is the energy. The Universe often let’s us know when we’re meeting a soul mate in the form of visible energy, such as white flashes, lightning bolts, auras, and so forth.

For example, my client Anna did some work with me to call forth her soul mate. Soon after, she met a new co-worker at a staff meeting, and the minute they shook hands, she felt dizzy. “My knees went weak; I actually had to excuse myself and sit down,” she explained.

Shortly after, she was in the company kitchen and who should walk in but this man. As they stood in the room together, “a bolt of lightning leaped across from his body to mine,” she said. “It was bright white, about ten inches tall, and extended the full eight feet between us. I gasped, and when I looked at him, his mouth was hanging open and he looked stunned.”

This kind of visible energy is common when soul mates meet for the first time as if the Universe is asking us to wake up, take note, pay attention!

Soul mates are more than romantic.

Primary soul mates aren’t always romantic partners. They can also be the best friend, family member or colleague we are deeply connected to in our lives. Again, every soul meeting is a karmic crossing, designed to help us work through lessons of soul growth in this lifetime.

Understanding this—that we are all here to teach each other—can help us manifest a more joyful approach to life and love, in all the kinds of relationships we have.

Geek Month in Review: January 2014

By JB Sanders

Ice and snow…

Isaac Asimov Predicts 2014
Interesting set of snippets of things Asimov thought would be happening in 2014, and he gets a LOT of things right. Holy crap!

Ghost Stations of the London Underground
Ever wanted a map of all the disused, but still largely intact, subway stations of the London metro system? Here ya go.

Epilepsy Drug Might Help Adults Learn Languages
It’s designed to help folks with varying degrees of epilepsy, but valproate might help adults learn languages like they were a kid again. It enhances, or re-instates, neuro-plasticity.

Famous ‘80s Movie Posters as Stained Glass
Seriously, you really get a better appreciation for the movie after seeing the poster in stained glass. Which movie? Say, RoboCop. Or Blade Runner.

Geekiest Remodel Ever?
See what you can do with $30,000 and a dream. Woman converts her house into an original Star Trek tribute, with pretty great success.

Glow-in-the-Dark Sidewalks
It’s a technology called Starpath, and it’s a spray-on application that’s non-slip, waterproof, and non-reflective. Plus it’s environmentally friendly!

Ready-to-Use Supervillain Lairs
Yeah, I posted about this before, but this is an updated and cooler list. It’s got a 1970’s German Cold War bunker, with a hip interior, and a volcano house.

Follow-up: Derelict Ship Upgraded to Ghost Ship
Remember that cruise ship left to drift the Atlantic I mentioned back in February of 2013? No? Well, there’s a ship out there that’s been adrift now for almost a full year. Doesn’t get much better than a derelict cruise ship overrun by cannibal rats, right?

Firing a Gun Underwater: In Super-Slow Motion
Always a good time with the SloMo guys. This time, see a gun fired underwater.

What if Star Wars was set in the Old West?
Yeah, you read that right. Not Han Solo, but Hank Solomon, gun runner and smuggler. There are 3D models to gawk at, too.

Or Noir Wars? Or SteamPunk Wars? Or … just go look at the artist’s website

Boeing 777 Airliner Recreated in Paper
So this art student wants to create a model airplane out of paper. Cool, you say. Well, hold your flying horses, because he does it entirely out of manilla envelopes, and he recreates not only the exterior of the plane, but also the interior — including seats, doors, etc. And the doors WORK! Watch them in action.

Build With Virtual LEGOs on the Web
For those of you who don’t have time to play with real LEGOs, try out this virtual ones.

Yoga Styles: Discover the Practice for You

By Meagan McCrary

At first glance it appears that yoga is yoga is yoga, but take a closer look and you’ll discover a vast world of yoga systems and lineages, teaching methodologies and techniques, different practices and beliefs, and so forth and so on. Modern yoga has evolved into a myriad of styles, variations and combination of yoga practices, with more approaches being developed with each passing year. And while yoga is for everyone, not every style of yoga is: How do you know what style, or styles, of yoga is best for you?

The first step is to know your choices and understanding the difference between yoga styles. The second is to know what you are looking for in ways of a yoga practice. Consider your reasons for practicing; what would you like to gain from your time on the mat? Are you searching for a sweaty, dynamic (yet mindful) workout? Or are you more attracted to yoga’s restorative practices? Do you have any special needs or limitations? Would you prefer a class with personal attention? Or are you interested in some of the more traditional aspect of yoga? What excites you about yoga and, most importantly, what’s going to keep you coming back?

Below are a few key styles of yoga for you to familiarize yourself with what’s out there, but remember there’s a whole vast world of yoga styles and systems offering different experiences. What’s important is that if you’re in the know you can attend any yoga class you’d like with confidence.

Ashtanga: The Original Vinyasa Flow Yoga
Ashtanga yoga is a dynamic, physically demanding practice that synchronizes breath and movement, producing a strong internal heat as you move through a set sequence of postures. Originating with this style of yoga, vinyasa, which means “breathing-movement system,” forms the foundation of practice. Each movement is accompanied by one breath to create one system of breathing and moving, or one vinyasa. The method is a process of purification, heating the body and eliminating toxins and impurities through sweat. And sweat you will as you move briskly from one pose to the next to the rhythm of your own breath.

Side Note: Power yoga, vinyasa yoga and all of the flow variations of yoga were developed from Ashtanga yoga and based in the same vinyasa technique. The difference being that Ashtanga yoga has six set sequences of poses, and the majority of students only practice the first two series. The sequencing in vinyasa flow style yoga is very creative, taking your body on a challenging journey through a variety of postures.

Iyengar: Alignment-Based Yoga
Iyengar yoga is the practice of precision, paying close attention to the anatomical details and alignment of each posture. Rather than moving quickly from one pose to the next, postures are built methodically with acute concentration and held for longer periods of time while students receive individualized attention from the teacher. Iyengar teachers are very skilled at offering modifications for injuries and limitations, using props as necessary, making this style of yoga appropriate for just about everyone. Marked by discipline, the method systematically cultivates strength, flexibility, endurance and stability along with correct structural alignment and concentration.

Kundalini: Energy-Focused Yoga
Kundalini yoga is a highly spiritual and dynamic practice aimed at expanding consciousness and increasing physical vitality by accessing and integrating prana (life-force energy) throughout the body. The method is multidimensional, using rhythm, movement, breath, and sound to effectively stimulate and shift your energy — something you can feel in your body. The practice alternates between active exercises (known as kriyas) and periods of relaxation, during which you’ll be guided to pay close attention to any internal sensations you’re experiencing. Beginner friendly, Kundalini yoga promotes a strong inward focus rather than outwardly perfecting the poses, promising that all you need to be able to do is breathe and move and you will have an energetic experience in your very first class.

Bikram: Hot Yoga
Bikram Yoga is a set sequence of 26 yoga postures done in 105-degree heat with 40 percent humidity for 90 minutes. The sequence is designed to systematically work every part of the body from the inside out. You will twist, churn, bend, bow and fold your way through postures, bringing fresh, oxygenated blood to every internal organ your body. The heat and humidity serve to speed up the body’s natural detoxifying process, sweating out toxins while boosting your heart rate. There is no flow between positions in Bikram yoga, each pose is performed twice and held from anywhere from 10-60 seconds. In the end, the practice is just as much an exercise in willpower as it is physical exertion.

One last word of advice: Take a few classes. Unless you absolutely hated the experience take a few different teachers before writing a system off. Finding a yoga teacher that you resonate with is just as important as finding the right style. Other than that, don’t be afraid to try something new, you may surprise yourself and end up falling in love with your yoga practice.

Moonlight Tarot’s Question Corner: Mystical Answers to Mundane Inquiries

By Angela Kaufman, Moonlight Tarot LLC

Happy 2014 readers! In spite of the dark and cold, January is a great month to be inspired. This month’s Querent, whom we will call Roland, is hoping to make 2014 the year for a big transition- moving to a new home. He wants to know if this will be the big year for this move and if any indication can be given as to direction/distance. For this domestic question I feel compelled to consult the charming retro Housewive’s Tarot.

While conducting the reading I sense a great deal of pressure and anxiety, as if this is matter involves some emotional turmoil. Roland’s three cards are the 6 of Swords, reversed, the Chariot, and the Seven of Swords reversed. When conducting a reading I strive to focus on empowerment rather than fatalistic yes-or-no perspectives. Having said this, my sense is that while Roland may come very close to his goal this year, it is strongly advised that he consider altering his time table. The resounding impression from this reading is reminiscent of the old saying “close but no cigar”. In Roland’s situation however it would be more appropriate to say “you will come close, there will be a cigar, but you will find it most unsavory”. Of course we can see why the latter never became a catching adage. What does this mean for Roland? Should he give up, or try harder? Many times foreknowledge of a situation can provide the opportunity to take different actions and affect change to the overall outcome, but there is no guarantee that this will always be the case. While these cards do not seem favorable for a move happening this year, they likewise do not suggest an outright lost cause.

The first card appears reversed and is the Six of Swords. If this card were right side up and further in placement in the reading it would suggest that Roland would be likely to relocate but that it would come as a compromise, not as his first option. Placed as it is, it suggests that Roland’s itch to move on involves a desire to start over and put a messy situation behind him. He is seeking resolution to a conflict but will not be likely to get his clean start right away. Something is getting in the way. He will be likely to put effort into his goal only to find numerous dead ends and detours along the way….for now. Roland should understand that this does not imply that he should cease his efforts. He may do well to revise his time frame or re-examine his motivation and strategy. This is not likely to be a smooth transition if he insists on pushing forward according to current plans. Also, part of the emotional resolution he is seeking through this transition is likely to allude him. To reference another saying, if Roland is assuming the grass will be greener in another’s yard, he is likely to find that the yard is slightly out of reach for now and even if he had the means to reach it, he would find it is not the solution he initially hoped for. This card is in the recent past position suggesting there has recently been a move or attempt which was not successful. An attempt to relocate may have already been put into motion and then reconsidered, foiled or suspended. In fact the idea of suspension is a theme in Roland’s reading as each card echoes this concept of stalemate.

The second and most significant of the three cards is the Major Arcana card, the Chariot, numbered 7. This card speaks to the soul of the matter. Roland feels mostly ready to move on and has resigned himself to making this transition but is not fully committed on some level to the steps that will be required. He has conflicting feelings that prevent him from taking the necessary actions to make this transition occur. There may be an additional burden that is not so easily relinquished. This may be a lease, mortgage, obligation to a particular location or some type of fear or doubt that keeps him harnessed in place in spite of some efforts to move forward. This is not defeat however. It simply suggests Roland has a little more work to do to prepare himself.

In spite of his determination this card suggests some indecision, even on a subconscious level. There is something of personal significance keeping Roland tied to his present residence. It is more than a financial matter, it is one of personal acceptance. He has not yet come to terms with exactly what this move will entail for him personally and thus has not yet made a full hearted commitment. It also feels like there is something he needs to let go of. In terms of location this card also suggests a difficult choice faced further into the year regarding two very opposite lifestyles or geographic directions, both seemingly equal in terms of attraction and repulsion. As much as Roland wants to move on he still appears to see himself as committed to a particular area and an opportunity is likely to arise that challenges his rootedness to a certain community. He will be challenged to decide between taking a bigger risk and moving farther than expected or remaining and waiting it out to see about future opportunities.

Extra baggage stands in the way of this transition. As the year unfolds, Roland is likely to develop some progress toward his goal and then within 7 weeks or months, find himself at an impasse. It seems more likely that within 2-3 years this move will take place rather than in the immediate future. Roland needs to spend some time searching his conscious and unconscious motivations for this transition and ensure that he is being realistic in his expectations. He will likely devote more energy to preparing for this transition this year rather than taking the action and making the move. This is still a sign of significant progress as he will be more than half way there and will be opening up to finishing stages of this process that propel him beyond the plateau in which he finds himself stuck.

The final card echoes the plateau message as it is another seven, the Seven of Swords, also reversed. This card being reversed suggests a resolution found but with patience and work, and a little more time. In its normal presentation, this card suggests futility and stagnation. Representing the future steps and in a reversed position however, its meaning suggests resolution after overcoming an initially futile attempt. It suggests that Roland is currently stuck and will need to focus the majority of his efforts this year on resolving the plateau he faces, but that by the end of the next 7-12 months he will identify factors that have been sabotaging his goal and will be actively engaged in overcoming these obstacles. This may involve paying off a debt or resolving an issue that was draining his finances. It may also involve taking measures to pursue his goal more efficiently as the current situation suggests his efforts are not representative of a full commitment. The obstacle he faces will be overcome but he needs to take different action and be mindful to not repeat processes that are time and energy consuming without yielding positive results. It seems that if Roland proceeds without overcoming the obstacle represented by the Chariot he will find himself placing much effort to no avail and somehow sacrificing more time, energy, and perhaps even money in the process. There is some aspect of the present situation that if it remains unchecked will be a drain on his progress in moving this year, or will ultimately sacrifice his true goal in the effort to make things happen without a solid base.

Overall the reading suggests progression toward Roland’s goal as the numbers proceed from six to seven and then the number seven is repeated. This suggests action taken and then a stalemate beyond the halfway mark. Either difficulty selling his home or leaving his lease, difficulty securing the final stages of the moving process or a misunderstanding or ambivalence toward the final stages of the move are likely obstacles. These obstacles can be overcome with different action and perhaps a slightly different attitude. When a reading yields a number of reversed cards, it suggests unfulfilled potential. Consider what can be done to “right” the reversals. What energy, resources, compromises or potential assistance is available but not being utilized? View the reversal not as a wall that stands in the way, but as an idea that is emerging but not yet complete. What additional touches are needed to take this idea and put it into action? Interestingly the cards that emerge suggest that the greatest difficulty Roland will face is one of inaction or inability to take action as he originally desired. Anticipating a delay, Roland can be empowered enlist his creativity and flexibility to consider his goal in a different light. If he remains true to the inspiration for his decision and commits himself to the end result he will be better able to navigate through delays in his plans.

There is excess baggage perhaps emotionally and materially, that he needs to resolve and let go of before his plans are able to be executed, as the Chariot is the one card which is upright as if it holds the two reversed cards in the balance. This suggests Roland is at a pivotal stage in his development and before he moves further he must resolve some issues that continue to keep him stuck. By doing so he deepens his commitment to his future life and is ready to leave behind what no longer serves his lifestyle. The reversed Seven of Swords also suggests potential delayed as it is the final card in the reading. If the first reversal in the past suggests an idea that is formulating but not yet complete, a future reversal suggests untapped potential that emerges gradually. Roland is likely to shed his burdens and move away from what has been draining him but it will take some time to go through this process. If he currently rents or owns a home it may take a seven month time period to resolve this burden and in the process he may find himself exerting energy and spending money in the process.

With an open mind and willingness to make the full mind/body commitment to this change Roland will move forward personally and in residence but it seems that this year there are plateaus to overcome at least for the majority of 2014. Best of luck Roland, bring your focus to the ultimate goal and keep your hope your goal is closer than you may realize even when obstacles come your way.

Forecast 2014: 11 Spiritual Trends Beyond the Shift

By Sara Wiseman

We had such high hopes for the Shift—the new age dawning in 2012 and continuing in 2013. And in fact, much of these did come true—these were heady years of releasing old patterns for most of us, especially old thought patterns contained in the collective soul.

In 2014, we’ll see more of this transition or Shift and much of it is very, very difficult for humankind, the animal and plant kingdom, and the earth itself—there is great chaos, disaster and suffering continuing this year. This is what happens when seven billion souls all attempt to wake up at the same time—many of us are grumpy at being shaken from the old dream, and many are not able to withstand the Shift at all.

Yet overall, 2014 is a gentler year. It’s as if we’ve actually evolved a little bit. We understand where we need to go, and even if we’re not there yet, at least we’re pointing in the right direction. We don’t live in fear the same way we used to.

In 2014, this much is true: the more you let go of the old paradigm, the more the new paradigm begins to show up in your life. Eleven signs to watch for:

1. Time shifts. You’ll notice that time isn’t running on the same schedule as it used to; you’ll experience great passages of “no time” or being unable remember time that has passed. Nowness becomes real.

2. Spiritual awakening. The great leap forward continues for millions. Many of you will begin to experience great passages of true awakening. This is worldwide.

3. A new healing emerges. The health insurance fiasco is a sign that we are moving from the fear and scarcity based systems of health, to a new way. Energy healing will become not just more mainstream, but more effective. The old models of illness are beginning to be released, even though we are still in early stages.

4. Food as medicine. The GMO battle is one of the most significant of our time. We begin to understand and fight for the value of food as medicine and our source of health.

5. The ocean calls for help. The oceans, rivers and other bodies of water continues to use their force in weather, disaster, and more to signal their great need for help.

6. The refugee becomes a symbol of our Oneness. What happens to the least of one, happens to all.

7. Transportation changes. Cars and oil dependency won’t be the same in five years.

8. Marijuana becomes legal in more states. This creates shifts that we won’t understand for another decade.

9. Human rights continue to be supported on all levels: civil, race, gender, age.

10. Child and teen leaders. The new generation speaks out as a force; watch for key martyrs and leaders such as Malala. The younger generations are communicating with each other, and waiting for their time to lead.

11. The wise elderly. Boomers begin to have enlightenment left and right. Their ability to release and wake up from old paradigms is astounding. Many will be heroic for coming generations; this may also happen in your own family.
