Ten Questions with Dr Caroline Watt

1. What is parapsychology?
It’s the scientific study of the factors underlying apparently paranormal experiences. At the Koestler Parapsychology Unit, we’ve always taken a broad approach to this topic, including (for example) ‘what’s not psychic but looks like it’, the psychology of paranormal belief, and the social and historical context of paranormal experiences and beliefs. So for us it’s not solely about testing the psi hypothesis (psi being the blanket name for paranormal abilities – pronounced ‘sigh’).

2. According to the Parapsychological Association’s website you completed a part-time PhD on the topic “The Relationship Between Performance on a Prototype Measure of Perceptual Defense/Vigilance and Psi Performance”. Um, what is that?
Yes, it’s a snappy title, eh? Basically, it was looking at similarities between subliminal perception and extrasensory perception.

3. Can you explain to our readers what the term “experimenter effect” means?
In parapsychology, it refers to the situation where certain experimenters seem to consistently obtain evidence for psi, whilst others seem to always get chance results. In psychology, it refers to the situation where the experimenter inadvertently influences the participant in his or her experiment, often to give results in line with the experimenter’s expectations. My studies have suggested that an important factor in parapsychology’s experimenter effect is the experimenter’s own belief in the paranormal.

4. What makes replicability important to parapsychology?
Replicability would occur if parapsychologists could discover the ‘recipe’ for obtaining evidence for psi in their laboratory studies. It is important first because if we had a replicable effect then we could make quicker progress in understanding psi, and second because most scientists believe that if a claimed experimental effect is not replicable, then it is probably not valid, and third… there is no third.

5. I know this is a broad question, but can you tell us your thoughts on the psychology of paranormal beliefs and experiences?
Because most paranormal experiences occur out in the real world, I think there is a huge amount of psychology going on with these experiences (the role of expectancy, belief, memory, suggestibility, motivation, for example). While some people believe in the paranormal because of an experience that they have had, about half believe for other reasons (e.g., religious or other world views, and hearing about paranormal phenomena in the media etc.) – so it’s a really complicated issue. Because of this, most parapsychologists turn to more controlled laboratory settings, with more artificial tests (for better or for worse), when trying to formally test whether there is any evidence for psi.

6. What do you think about television shows that touch on parapsychological topics, like “Sea of Souls”?
I can’t bear to watch them! I can usually only last a few seconds before switching off because their depictions are so, ummm, ‘colourful’ – after all, these programmes are coming out of the entertainment strand, not factual.

7. Being the acting head of the Koestler Parapsychology Unit at Edinburgh University I just have to ask…haggis, delicious Scottish meal or paranormal phenomenon?
Don’t believe what the cryptozoologists say – there are no haggi running wild on the hills of Scotland! Delicious in my view – both the meaty and the vegetarian versions. MacSween’s are the best!

8. What is one thing that you would like every Average Joe to understand about parapsychology?
There are lots of normal factors that can cause people to have experiences that look and feel paranormal, but are not. I really am not a raving skeptic – honest! – but it’s so difficult to come to a clean conclusion on real-world, spontaneous paranormal experiences, that I think we have to turn to laboratory settings in order to be more confident about our conclusions.

9. On behalf of an estimated ¾ of our readers and my husband, how can I be you when I grow up?
I think you need to have a good training in methodology, statistics, and critical thinking. A degree in psychology would be a good starting point. After that, you need to get a feel for what’s already out there in parapsychology-land – see my answer to question 10.

10. Parting shot! Ask us here at The Magical Buffet any one question?
I am thinking of setting up a distance learning (i.e. online) ‘introduction to parapsychology’ course – would you be interested?

Interested? I already went to your website and took the survey to express my interest.

About Dr Watt
Dr Caroline Watt obtained her first degree in Psychology from the University of St Andrews in 1984, the year in which the University of Edinburgh announced that it would host the Koestler Chair of Parapsychology. The first Koestler Professor, Robert L. Morris, took up his post in late 1985. A few months later, Morris recruited Caroline Watt as his research assistant.
Having been awarded a psychology PhD supervised by Morris, on the topic of perceptual defensiveness and extrasensory perception, Dr Watt continued to conduct parapsychological research and teach at the University’s Department of Psychology, first as Research Fellow and then Senior Research Fellow.
Dr Watt worked with Bob Morris until his death in 2004. She was then appointed to a Senior Lectureship in psychology, her current position. In 2004 she became a member of the Scientific Advisory Board of the Bial Foundation. She served as President of the Parapsychological Association (PA) 2004-2005, and currently holds a position on the PA Board.

Profile: Northern New York Paranormal Research Society

Text provided by Northern New York Paranormal Research Society

The Northern New York Paranormal Research Society (NNYPRS) was founded in 2001 to provide assistance to people experiencing paranormal activity. NNYPRS will investigate all claims of paranormal activity, from hauntings to UFO sightings to cryptozoological claims. With a combined 60 + years of experience researching all facets of the metaphysical world, NNYPRS is a team of professionals that work with their clients until they are satisfied. NNYPRS does not charge for their work, however, donations are graciously accepted.

In 2001, Merrill McKee, President and co-founder met Dale, Vice-President and co-founder began talking about the need for a team in Northern New York who could help people who were troubled by the seemingly paranormal activities in their homes. In May, they found a couple of friends that were also interested, and formed NNYPRS. Soon after, Merrill met Dave Zirpoli, from Albany . NY, who seemed very interested in joining the team, even though he lived three hours away. After 2 years of joining Merrill and Dale for investigations, as well as finding places in the Albany area to research, Dave was promoted to Capitol Region Team Leader, and a second team was formed based out of Albany, NY. From that point forward, although membership has been ever changing, these 3 individuals have led NNYPRS to a 20 person Investigative team, on numerous investigations, and in gathering a plethora of paranormal data.

What sets NNYPRS apart from most paranormal investigative groups out there is their 2 sided approach to investigations. Many groups only use scientific tools and methods, while others only take a metaphysical approach to the research. NNYPRS marries both sides in a way no other team has been able to do. All investigations are conducted with an open mind and no preconceived notions on whether or not the activity is or isn’t really happening. Because of this, NNYPRS is able to look at all data collected objectively, which enables them to determine if there are natural or supernatural explanations.

Confidentiality is one of NNYPRS highest priorities. All of our clients names, addresses, etc. will be protected and not used in any publications or media releases without their permission. NNYPRS will not come to your home with three large vans with our logos and names painted on the side. Neighbors will believe you are just having some regular company.

NNYPRS performs all of it’s investigations free of charge. The vast majority of our equipment has been paid for my our member’s monthly dues. Donations are accepted and most clients are more than happy to donate to us once we are finished with our investigation. As of right now, NNYPRS is in need of approximately $7000.00 worth of major and minor equipment. Most investigations we perform cost significantly more than the donation given. So, obviously any public donations are very greatly appreciated.

For people who have had odd experiences and have no one to talk to, NNYPRS is there. To contact the team, you can go to their website at http://www.nnyprs.com or by e-mail at mailbag@nnyprs.com. Finally, you can call Merrill at (518) 651-4315.

Violence is Never the Answer. Well, At Least Not to a Curse.

I try to keep an open mind when being exposed to other cultures or belief systems, but there are some things I just can’t abide…and guess what?  It isn’t animal sacrifice, but that’s another blog.  It’s the practices employed by many different religions and cultures when dealing with someone who is believed to be possessed by a demon or somehow cursed.  The stories abound, and trust me, when you go to Google News and type in the key word “witchcraft” as often as I do, you see a lot about this.  I think it’s the fact that I didn’t go looking for this news story that made me notice it more.

There I am, visiting The Drudge Report website when I see the Drudge headline of “Girl nearly loses sight in eye-gouging exorcism…  It lead me to the story of a 14 year-old Maori girl in New Zealand that nearly lost her eyesight when relatives scratched at her eyes in an attempt to drive out a curse.  The girl’s cousin drowns during the same curse lifting ceremony.  An estimated 40 members of the family attended the ceremony.  Five other members were worked on, but not injured.

Let’s not get into a debate as to whether a person can actually be possessed by a demon or evil spirit.  Let’s just say, for the sake of this blog, that a person can.  That, in my opinion, is no excuse to cause physical harm to anyone.  From what I understand, the general concept is, a demon inhabits a body, so make the body uncomfortable and the demon will leave.  (Much the way that sage smudging drives away negative energies from a home.  The sage makes your home stink so much that spirits leave.)  I get it, but um, so what?  Your child or whatever is possessed, so suddenly you don’t give two craps about their body.  Cursed or not, it’s your kid’s eyes you’re scratching out, not the demon’s.  Maybe I’m a sap, but I think a human’s soul is way stronger than their body, so let’s take it easy on the scratching and water, okay?  In this particular case the ceremony was held because one of the family members stole a stone lion from outside a hotel.  I don’t have children, so perhaps I’m wrong here, but if you find out your child stole something I’m pretty certain that you don’t start with scratching out their eyes.  Call it a hunch.

Can I suggest that if you think that you or someone you know is possessed by an evil spirit, to go see a medical doctor.  I know, it’s horribly unromantic, but the fact is, every single day scientists are learning something new about how the human mind works.  Also, if your priest or other religious community leader ever suggests that causing physical harm to yourself or someone else is the answer, kick them to the curb.

Took baseline EMF and temperature readings
Psychics did a walk through
Took digital and analog still photos inside and out
Unpacked stationary equipment and set it up to run.
Turned on stationary equipment and swept location with EMF meters and thermometers throughout the night. Also continued taking still photographs. Started recorders for EVP.
Left property at approx.7am.

Conclusion:
After approximately 3 weeks, all still photographs have been re-viewed with no results.
All video has been reviewed and we may possibly have an orb in motion which is moving quickly enough to leave a contrail. Although this has been sent to homeowner, we have not validated this piece of evidence yet. It does not appear to be a bug. It is moving very
quickly and seems to have a flight pattern. It is not dust due to the lack of air circulation in the house.
There were no unusual EMF or temperature readings.
Based on the piece of video from us and the photograph and EVP’s recorded by PRINT, we feel that this location does have paranormal activity.

Text provided by Lisa Olive

The website – www.wolfpaww.com – launched in July of this year. We have over 100 members between our sites. Most of our members are from within the United States, but we also have members from New Zealand, Germany, Denmark, Morocco, The Netherlands, Finland, Australia and Columbia.

The organization was inspired by two great ladies – Janice Oberding and Dee Disparti.

I would like to introduce these ladies and explain what parts they played in the formation of the organization.

First, let me introduce Janice Oberding.

You probably recognize her from her experiences with the media, which includes numerous radio and TV interviews and appearances, consulting for the History Channel, Living TV, The Travel Channel and Fox Television. She is also a noted author of fine books such as Haunted Nevada, Ghosthunters Guide to Virginia City and Haunted Gold and Silver. She is a speaker, historian, researcher, paranormal investigator, has done many classes and is very knowledgeable in the paranormal field.

It was this post by Janice that initially set wolfpaww into motion.

“Recently I received a bulletin about The League of Extraordinary Paranormal Women. I jumped on it, reposted and requested an add. Why? Because I’m damn sick and tired of being a shadow woman. Oh I know, we’ve heard and read lots of stuff about shadow people, but it seems to me that the paranormal world is filled with shadow women.

SHADOW WOMEN are the women who work, research and investigate in this field and get overlooked again and again and again. Think not? How many notables (revered, famous whatever ya wanna call it) can you name in the paranormal? Now how many of those people are women? Why is that? I’ve been in this field over 40 years YES people, 40 years! Before you say, “oh man, she’s old.” Let me ask you this—”Did you say that about the men who’ve also been in the field for decades and decades?” Just take a moment to look at some of the conferences, talks, shows, retreats whatever ya wanna call them that are being advertised on the internet…How many of their notable speakers are men? What’s the problem here? Are women not competent enough paranormal researchers? Do we not present well? Can we not entertain and inform our audiences? Perhaps there aren’t enough of us in the field? Or is a certain amount of sexism and good ole’ boyism creeping into this field? Think not? Start surfing some of the paranormal sites here and be sure to read the comments. Are you impressed?

If you’re a woman you may be just the teeniest bit offended. Good! That’s how good old boyism works—you’re offended so you’ll sneak into the shadows and be quiet.

Now you may be thinking, “what can you do? You’re just one old woman!” Well I’ll tell ya what I’m gonna do AND if your tired of it, I suggest you do the same! I will not spend one more nickel on a book, conference, retreat, get together, video in which good old boyism seems to be going on…If you practice good ole boyism don’t expect me to shell out my hard earned cash to support your endeavors.”
It’s all very sad, but true. Women do contribute just as much, if not more, to the paranormal field as our male counterparts and we are forgotten for the most part. It seems as if women in the paranormal field are more likely to be the subject of attacks by skeptics as well. Take Noreen Renier for example. She is a noted psychic who has worked with police departments in many states with unsolved cases on several occasions, with one writer who decided to make it his personal agenda to distroy her and her credibility. But he isn’t the only male writer to try and do so, and she isn’t the only woman. You don’t see these writers trying to distroy any of the male psychics the way they do the women. Another thing, and this has always been, not only in the paranormal field, but in all fields, is the pay that women receive for guest appearances at male dominated conferences. Do you think the organizers of conferences would pay a woman $10,000.00 per appearance, as they do with males, such as Grant and Jason from TAPS?? Of course they don’t!! It’s that good old battle of the sexes that has very much expanded into the paranormal field.

Next, I’d like to introduce you to Dee Disparti.

Like Janice, Dee has been the subject of many interviews with newpapers, has worked with various production crews and appeared on TV programs, both here and internationally. She has been involved in the filming of documentaries, has written articles for newspapers and is currently in the process of authoring a book on hauntings. She has been a featured guest on radio and currently is hosting her own radio show, Paranormal Perceptions, on Blogtalk Radio.

She is a gifted Medium and a Reiki practitioner. She holds classes and lectures on meditation, spirituality, dowsing and the use of pendulums. Dee is a sought after speaker for conferences. Along with all of this, she does tea leaf and private readings, as well.

I have had the pleasure to work with Dee on many investigations. She uses her gifts to help resolve experiences some people find hard to explain. She teaches some to help themselves and their loved ones who have passed on. Often she is actively able to help those who have passed to have a successful transition to the afterlife.
Her love for photography, combined with her abilities to communicate with the other side has enabled her to take some outstanding paranormal pictures. She credits her grandmother as being responsible for educating her on how to utilize some of her abilities. She, too, taught Dee the ancient art of dowsing and the usage of pendulums.

I had mentioned Janice’s wonderful blog to her and she totally agreed that women are not given enough credit for what they do. It was at her suggestion that I start my own organization. She had been pushing and prodding me in this direction for quite some time, all in a nice way of course, as she knows it’s the only way to get me to do things sometimes. After many discussions with both Janice and Dee, wolfpaww was born.
Our website hosts blog pages from Janice Oberding, Dee Disparti and Margot Marrakesh. We offer paranormal news, health and nutrition, fun and shopping pages. We also offer sites that anyone can join – The Ghost Den, Haunt Seekers, Haunt Seekers Forum and GHOPS. As with all new organizations, we are going through the growth process at this time.
Our goal is to eventually expand further by bringing to the paranormal world all female conventions,
conferences and meetings, giving us a chance to rise above and shine. We are also working towards establishing a link of women in the field world wide to help support each other. It would be great if a member visits a place and would be able to contact a friend in that area they have met on the site to go explore haunts with.

Author Bio
Lisa Olive is the founder/owner of a new site for women – wolfpaww – which stands for “Women’s Organization Looking For Paranormal Activity World Wide.” It was formed by women for women in the paranormal field, with an agenda to let the paranormal world know that we are out there and we are tired of being put on the back burner, sort of speak. We believe that it’s time we stood up for ourselves.

North-Eastern Alabama Paranormal Society Case #0256

By Deborah Collard

Home of:
John and Jane Ghost
111 Ghost Town Drive,
GhostTown, Anywhere, USA

NAPS was contacted on June 15 in relation to a possible haunting at the above listed location by the homeowner Jane. Jane states that she is feeling a presence, very strongly in certain areas of her home. She states she would like for NAPS to investigate and see if she is only imagining things or IF there is a presence there. Jane reports no danger, only things that are giving her “roller-coaster” emotions at times and the feeling that she is not alone. Jane states that she and her husband will be on vacation for the next week and to please follow up as soon as we can. NAPS staff Ricci, Christy and Bob went over to the Ghost’s home the following week after their vacation for baseline studies and initial interviewing.

Initial Interview: June 23, 2007
The clients were made aware that there is a certain protocol for NAPS to investigate. Forms are required to be filled out unless the client declines. For example: North-Eastern Alabama Paranormal Society Advice Waiver, NAPS Confidentiality Form, Release and Waiver of Liability Form, Permission Form and others as deemed necessary.

NAPS Interview Sheet:
What exactly is occurring in your home?
Response: Well I feel like my daddy is here. I can smell him and feel his presence.

When did these occurrences begin and how often do they occur:
They have been going on for several years but seem to be getting stronger and more frequent.

Could you please give me a brief history of this property?
Well my parents owned this home until their death and then my husband and I bought it following their deaths.

Could you please give me the exact locations of the activity?
I feel it heavier in the back yard around the grape vines that daddy planted, also in the kitchen and the family den where they entertained.

Would you like for NAPS to investigate these occurrences?
Yes, please.

Notes: The Client seems very concerned about the presence of the spiritual activity. It appears the family is in a decision making process that could affect the home and it staying within the family. During initial walk-thru one can sense the presence of energy, especially in certain areas. Asked client to please journal any unusual occurrences both location and times until we return. Home is in good repair, very elegant and clean.

Investigation: June 29, 2007
NAPS STAFF Present: Deborah, Nathan, Ricci, Brandy, Larry, Robert, Christy and Bob
The team of NAPS met at the investigation point at 7PM. NAPS was greeting warmly by homeowners. Equipment was unloaded and placed in Family Den for disbursement to necessary locations of use. At 7:16pm NAPS staff determined the first place to investigate was the backyard area where the father had spent countless hours working. Lawns manicured with fountains, various statues and woodwork present. EVP’s, Photos and sensory feelings noted at this location. NAPS note the weather to be very hot, overcast as if storm or rain approaching. Baseline temperature reading while exiting to lawn area was 86 degrees then dropped immediately to 82 degrees. Pictures revealed some orbs present during the daylight hours, these could be associated with the mugginess and the ponds located in the backyard. While in the backyard temperature variances of 86-90 degrees based on location. EVP’s no evidence revealed.

At 7:37pm the Family Living Room had a baseline reading of 68 degrees. At this same time wireless cameras were being set up in the Family Den, also the original bedroom of the parents. HI 8 was set up in Family Den directed in the location of the Father’s private Bath.

At 7:40 EMF reading spiked in the Father’s private bath from 15 to 90. Determined bad fuse in bathroom. Homeowner replaced.

At 7:55 Living room baseline reading 68-69 degrees. Living room video being monitored by NAPS staff member. Noted various orbs and slight movement of chair in LR. Homeowner states this was her mother’s favorite chair.

From 8:00 until 9:00 NAPS staff member into Living Room sitting in the dark observing. Determined it would be time to bring in dousing rods. Client opens closet door and distinctly smells her father’s scent. Worked with dousing rods questioning whether or not spirit present. Yes responses recorded. Client pulled out two fur coats. Client asked me to determine with the dousing rods which coat the father liked the best on her mother. Dousing rods made determination, correct.

Around 9 pm NAPS staff members to the basement area. The deceased father’s belt was still hanging where it had been since death. Daughter had not removed. NAPS Deborah held the belt and feelings overcame her of a rapid heart rate and pain to the left side of her face. So Noted. Battery drainage noted on camera by Deborah . NAPS Ricci had a feeling of nausea. Note: There were chemicals located next to each other that would create a headache or stomach upset to someone sensitive to these things. Ricci and Nathan debunked.

At 9:06 Bob, Ricci and Larry to Master Bedroom to find it very peaceful but as they were leaving the EMF meter spiked. Unknown cause.

At 9:14 Guest Bedroom #1 had feeling of energy in the room. K-2 Spikes on bed. Found that bed was grandparents of client’s husband.

At 9:49 return to basement, Ricci at this time started having a headache. It was definitely determined because of chemicals in basement.

Around 10PM Larry is in the kitchen/DR area while monitoring video feels someone touch his neck. It made him jerk, due to startling. It was determined later that this dining room table was removed from a “supposed” Haunted Estate many years before.

NAPS staff continued to monitor the home with technical equipment for the next couple of hours. EVP’s continued to be taken throughout the home. Photo’s as well.

Deborah decided to meditate and see if anything would come to her in this altered state of consciousness. She could see a woman with short hair, brown hair with gray streaking wearing a snap housecoat. The housecoat appears green in color with some type of florals, material very soft and puff sleeves noted. The housecoat comes down below the knees slightly and the woman is wearing slippers with some type of bow on the top. A little dog, appears old, dog is black and white. The lady has pierced ears but no earrings. She is wearing two wedding bands, one wide and one thin. She has very thin hands. The woman was slender, not heavy. Someone touched her face and she stopped feeling and seeing. Ricci sat down with Deborah and said she keeps seeing a heart locket or necklace with a thin chain.

REVEAL: July 1, 2007 @ 1:30PM
NAPS STAFF Present for Reveal: Deborah, Ricci, Brandy and Bob
Both Homeowners present

NAPS Staff was welcomed warmly to the residence. We brought along the laptop for evidence reveal. We explained to clients that there was no significant photo’s and that video did not reveal any anomalies. One EVP we were unable to debunk, a female voice calling out the name of the female homeowner. After listening to the EVP, client stated that it sounded like her mother calling her. We noted that the high EMF spikes in the bathroom and at one electrical outlet were something that the homeowner should follow up on with an electrician. We concluded that the homeowner should store chemicals, pesticides and other things of this nature in a more appropriate manner as not to risk headaches or illness.

With this noted on the hard science side we continued to the soft science side of the evidence.
We concluded that Staff member Larry had indeed been touched by something of an unknown nature while in the kitchen/DR area. I expressed to the home owner that I had questions related to my meditative state whereas certain things were coming through to me. They were as follows and response from homeowner noted.

1. A woman with short hair, brown hair with gray streaking wearing a snap housecoat.

2. Response from female homeowner: My mother wore the snap housecoats; they were her favorites for lounging around the house. She wore the floral ones. Mother did have slippers with bows on the top, like house shoes she wore with her housecoat. Mother and Daddy did have a cocker spaniel and it lived a very long life. She continues to state that her mother had pierced ears but could not wear earrings; she was allergic to some of the metals in them. Finally she stated that her mother did wear both a wide band and thin band on her 4th finger. She states she loved her jewelry.

3. Ricci asked her if her mother had a ‘heart’ locket or necklace on a thin necklace. The homeowner smiled and said yes she did, it’s in the safety deposit box.

4. Deborah had the pain on the left side of her face and racing heart while holding the belt of the homeowners father while down in the basement. The homeowner states that her father had been killed at the intersection just at the end of the street. That he died instantly. That he had a bad heart and that he was struck on his left side.
We concluded our reveal and lovely conversation with the clients. The clients were thrilled with the kind and heartfelt service of NAPS Staff. The homeowner asked if we would come back again at a later date when we had time. The homeowners requested that we form a circle and hold hands while the male homeowner led us in prayer in a most gracious manner. NAPS Staff departed with the decision that although not haunted that the presence of the deceased parent’s spirits are still present in a good way.

About the Author
Deborah Collard
Founder, North-Eastern Alabama Paranormal Society
Haunted Southern Nights
Director of the Paranormal OmegaCon

Deborah again finds herself looking up in amazement at a beautiful monument located in Shiloh National Military Park. This is so what she enjoys doing. Exploring the past! Deborah, who is Cherokee by blood, enjoys reaching back into the past to connect her with the spiritual world. The way she celebrates this passion is through her studies of the paranormal. Deborah considers herself an ‘oldie’ in this venue, knowing that 30 years ago the only tools she used to investigate with were her flashlight and whomever she could drag along with her to see if she could find answers to the many questions that wandered through her mind. Did the spirits of those who had passed still have a grasp on the earth via earthbound spirits? Was there truly a form of life after death? Were there those who chose not to leave for reasons unknown? Today she enjoys her life as a wife, mother, and even a Nana! Her quest for answers has never ceased. As technology progressed so did she and many years later has a very solid team of paranormal investigators. The Team is NAPS – North-Eastern Alabama Paranormal Society. NAPS was officially formed and being sought out to do investigations in 2004. If asked she will tell you NAPS is her family. Deborah teaches workshops, does lectures and panels on the paranormal. It is important to her that ghost hunters know just what they are doing and the proper way to do it!

In January 2007 Deborah and NAPS became a viable part of OmegaCon. OmegaCon promises to be the greatest sci/fi, fantasy and paranormal convention to ever come to the State of Alabama. OmegaCon will be held in Birmingham, Alabama on March 14-16, 2008.

Now NAPS is taking it one step further with the guidance of OmegaCon Productions. Haunted Southern Nights was always a dream to Deborah but OmegaCon Productions is making it a reality. Starting in July, NAPS will begin filming a series of paranormal investigations in some of the hottest locations in the South.

Deborah hosts NAPS Live Radio “Haunted Southern Nights” along with her friend and colleague Nathan Levan, NAPS investigator and VP of OmegaCon. Tuesday nights are very much looked forward to. Deborah seems to never meet a stranger or a ghost she can’t be friends with.

AS TIME PASSES, SO DO LIVES………………………………………………………..

Ten Questions with Cari Stone

1. All right, how did you get on the radio?
I contacted Lou Gentile in an email telling him how much I enjoyed his paranormal talk show. And if he needed any talk show hosts to please let me know. He contacted me a week later and here I am. I did have a background in radio broadcasting, I went to school in the summer of 2001, and graduated Madison Media Institute in the spring of 2002. I did have on air experience at a Madison radio station. I produced a political talk show as well.

2. Why choose to discuss the paranormal?
Why not? I have always been fascinated by the paranormal. I love listening to the investigators and non-fiction writers stories.

3. Can you tell us a little bit about how your shows are put together?
I contact the individual or individuals I want as my guest, schedule them. I call them 5 minutes before the show starts we discuss a bit about what will be said on the show. I ask what do you want to speak about? What don’t you feel comfortable speaking about? And then away we go!

4. Aside from me (Rebecca), who has been your favorite guest and why?
Lorraine Warren, and Lou Gentile have been my absolute favorite guests. I have so much respect for both of them. Lorraine Warren is the Queen of the paranormal field. Lou Gentile is a wealth of knowledge, and he tells it like it is.

5. What has been the most bizarre topic discussed on your show?
That would be whatever was discussed when Rebecca Elson was on the show.

6. So, with you being a celebrity and all, are you constantly hounded by hot male groupies?
Hot males, no! And we will leave it at that.

7. I know you have strong feelings about Ouija boards, want to share your thoughts with our readers?
I just want kids and adults to be educated about what they are really playing with when you play with a Ouija board. You don’t know where the information is coming from and it is a door that can allow negative entities to come through. I’m not saying something negative will come through every time. But it is a possibility.

8. What is the XX Factor?
The XX Factor is The 1st Annual Prominent Women Of The Paranormal Conference. Juli Velazques is the Founder of The XX Factor and she has asked me to be he host of the event. It is a celebration of women in the paranormal field. Juli wants to recognize the outstanding women of the paranormal community. It will be held June 13th thru the 15th, 3008 in Alton, IL. Everyone is welcome and no you don’t have to be a paranormal investigator to come and join in the fun. To find out more about The XX Factor go to www.myspace.com/thexxfactor.com

9. If you could have anyone living or deceased as a guest on your show, whom would you choose?
God

10. Parting shot! Ask us here at The Magical Buffet any one question?
What is your favorite paranormal talk show?

The Cari Stone Show, and that’s not a suck up answer, it’s the truth. Cari has a wicked sense of humor and lots of strong opinions. I may not always agree with her opinions, but I always enjoy listening. Love ya!

Cari Stone is always being asked how did she become a paranormal talk show host. The answer to this question is simple…Ms. Stone wrote an email to Lou Gentile telling him what a great job he was doing and that she really enjoyed his show. Cari added at the end of my message if you need any new talk show hosts please let me know. Cari Stone went to Madison Media Institute, in Madison, WI. for radio. Cari graduated in 2001 with a diploma in radio broadcasting. Lou Gentile called Cari a week later and left a message on her cell phone. Cari was so excited, she couldn’t believe he would take time to actually respond back to her! While Lou and Cari were planning a weekend talk show for her Lou Gentile had an industrial accident and was seriously hurt. Lou needed someone to step in and help with the show. Cari was lucky enough to be the one he asked and the rest is history.

Philadelphia Psychics: Screwed, and then Not So Much

Originally Posted 5-03-07

As of the writing of this blog at least 16 Philadelphia based fortune tellers have been shut down with the promise of more to come.  The law has been in place since 1971, but apparently no one was aware of its existence until recently.  News outlets are reporting that the law was first brought to the attention of the police.  The police approached the Department of Licenses and Inspections who were shocked to find that in fact, yes, the practice of fortune telling for money was illegal.  It is considered a third degree misdemeanor.  It also should be noted that they are not making arrests or issuing fines, but will if the offending individuals attempt to return to work.  Bummer for all those they issued business licenses to, eh?

A city official has been quoted in the Philadelphia Inquirer as saying, "Most psychics were con artists who prey on vulnerable people."  A sentiment that I’m sure skeptics and rationalists world wide are agreeing with, and cheering this new development on for.  The difference being, the skeptics I like, such as James Randi, are man enough to put their name with their quotes.  (It’s one of many reasons I love him.  James call me, I adore you.)

But was Philadelphia being ravaged by charlatan psychics?  I’m not going to sit here and say that every psychic is legit and not in it for the money.  On the other hand, I think that many psychics and fortune tellers view their chosen occupation as an entertainment and something that is filling a specific need in our modern society.  It is a sad but true statement that some psychics take advantage of needy and desperate individuals, but I think it’s an equally true statement that people will also get taken advantage of by doctors, lawyers, and a host of other professionals.  Just because one doctor screwed their patient certainly doesn’t mean I view all doctors as quacks.  I think we can afford to extend the same courtesy to fortune tellers and psychics.  When any of these professionals take advantage of or mistreats one of their clients, the wronged person has the option to sue … and the same happens with psychics.  (They can also be reported to the Better Business Bureau.)

I have had one psychic reading so far in my life.  I paid $25 for a unique experience.  I have spent that amount of money many times over for all kinds of experiences in the forms of books, movies, concerts, and more recently things like seances and travel to religious observances.  Although perhaps sometimes let down by the purchase, I never felt taken advantage of for having spent the money for the experience.  Except for when I bought the movie "Alone in the Dark", if I could’ve taken someone to court over that loss of funds I would have.

What I’m trying to say is this, visiting a fortune teller or psychic should be viewed perhaps more as an entertainment based experience.  Sure, listen to what the psychic has to say, many of them wish nothing more than to help and support you, but by no means allow a fortune teller to run your life.  The good ones wouldn’t want you to let them.  Visiting a psychic or fortune teller should be a rewarding experience that you may want to repeat, much like seeing the movie "Serenity" (three times in the theater).  It should never take over the entirety of your life, much like the movie "Serenity" (don’t ask how many times on dvd).

Come on Philadelphia, they were local businessmen and women.  Paying for licenses, paying their taxes, voting in elections, and being a part of your local economy.  Can’t something be done to help them out?

UPDATE:

Apparently something can be done!  Starting May 3, 2007 news sources out of Philadelphia began reporting that psychics and fortune tellers operating within the city are going back to work.  Monica Mitchell, who runs a psychic shop in Manayunk, PA, was rightfully peeved and instead of sitting around whining about it, like I was doing, she took action.  She lawyered up, and thanks to her attorney John Raimondi, psychics in Philadelphia have a second lease on their business lives.

According to The Philadelphia Inquirer Raimondi filed a request last week for a restraining order and preliminary injunction on the ground that the statue could be invoked only in cases of fraud.  He is quoted as saying, "What we said is the law is part of the crimes code.  You have to prove that someone has been taken advantage of, and you can’t expect L & I (Licenses and Inspections) to enforce that."

The City Solicitor’s Office agreed with Raimondi and advised the L & I to back off because the state law banning fortune tellers seemed better suited to fraud prosecution than to regulation.

Hopefully, this means things will settle down for the storefront psychics and fortune tellers in Philadelphia.  We’ll keep you posted…..

Profile: The Ghost Research Society

Text Provided by The Ghost Research Society

The Ghost Research Society is one of Chicagoland’s oldest and most respected paranormal research groups. It was founded in 1977 by Martin V. Riccardo and was originally called The Ghost Tracker’s Club. At that time, Dale D. Kaczmarek was its Research Director. Its members were from all walks of life but mostly those who just shared an interest in ghost research, hauntings and poltergeist phenomena. In 1982, Dale D. Kaczmarek was given full ownership of the GRS and became its President. Since that time, the Ghost Research Society is legendary within the field of ghost research.

Today, society members actively research and investigate all reports that come their way including private homes and businesses. The society also analyzes alleged spirit photographs, video and audio tapes that they come across from ordinary people or society members. The GRS operates using a number of devices, including air ion counters, cell sensors, electromagnetic field Gaussmeters, electromagnetic field testers, field strength meters, Geiger counters, G.E.I.S.T. (custom designed for the GRS by electronics specialist Stan Suho), magnetic field detectors, negative ion detectors, tri-feld meters, and night vision cameras and monitoring equipment.

The GRS has investigated a number of notorious locations both in the public and in private homes. A very small sampling of locations includes Graveyard X, the Joplin Spooklight, the Polish Museum in Chicago, That Steak Joynt, Rico D’s, Bachelor’s Grove Cemetery, Robinson Woods Cemetery, Rosehill Cemetery, Mineral Springs Hotel, the McPike mansion, the Lemp mansion, and Gettysburg. In March 2006, the Ghost Research Society was the first paranormal group to investigate the haunted Hooter’s restaurant at Wells in Chicago. The GRS is in high demand to research private homes as well and often conducts investigations upon request.

GRS President Dale Kaczmarek is well known within the ghost research field. He has been asked to speak at many conferences and lectures, and is sought out as a trained investigator. Dale is the author of four books, Windy City Ghosts, Windy City Ghosts II, A Field Guide To Spirit Photography, and Illuminating the Darkness: The Mystery of Spooklights. Dale has appeared in numerous publications including the Chicago Tribune, the Chicago Sun-Times, Dallas Morning News, Detroit News, Fate Magazine, Los Angeles Times, New York Times, Wall Street Journal, and the Washington Post. Dale has also appeared on television several times including the Oprah Winfrey Show, A & E, the Sci-Fi Channel, and Discovery Channel. Further information on Dale can be found at http://www.ghostresearch.org/about/dkbio.html

Today, Dale is the operator and manager of the popular Excursions Into the Unknown tour, which celebrates its 25th anniversary in 2007. This tour covers Chicago’s and the Chicago suburbs’ most haunted areas. The tour changes every year, so repeat patrons are always guaranteed an interesting and informative evening! There also are specialty tours such as “Murder and Mayhem” and “Tragic Events”. There are several off-stop points where participants can get a good up-close look at many famous haunted locations. All tours are run by Dale himself so riders are ensured an insightful evening with plenty of opportunities for question and answer sessions. The evening has often proved to be quite eventful as ghostly photos are frequently taken by riders on the tour! Tour information can be found at http://www.ghostresearch.org/tours/

In 2004, the Ghost Research Society expanded their goals by creating the Ghost Research Society Press. Authors and GRS members Dale Kaczmarek and Jim Graczyk joined forces to form their own publishing house. The Ghost Research Society Press not only covers books written by GRS members, but has also branched out to local authors such as Tamara Shaffer, writer of Murder Gone Cold: The Mystery of the Grimes Sisters. The GRS Press is always looking for potential new authors with an eye for the paranormal. You can learn more about the Ghost Research Society Press at http://www.ghostresearch.org/press

The GRS is also now sending out free monthly ghostly newsletters. These cover local ghost tales, information on the GRS and the GRS society press, book reviews, and topics in the world of ghosts. Please e-mail Dale at dkaczmarek@ghostresearch.org if you would like to sign up for the newsletter.

Like many ghost groups, the GRS also now has its own CafePress shop. This online boutique offers a number of great items such as calendars of ghostly photographs, t-shirts, bumper stickers, tote bags, caps, mugs, and coasters. The CafePress shop is located at http://www.cafepress.com/ghostly

The GRS is always looking for new members! There are four levels of membership available: Associate, Sustaining, Patron, and Lifetime memberships. Members are invited to attend the bi-monthly meetings, receive copies of The Ghost Trackers Newsletter, attend haunted location investigations, and receive discounts on GRS merchandise and Excursions Into the Unknown tours. We invite you to check out the Ghost Research Society website at http://www.ghostresearch.org/ to learn more about our group. You can contact Dale directly at dkaczmarek@ghostresearch.org

Ten Questions with a Paranormal Investigator

1.  You investigate the paranormal?  What exactly do you mean by paranormal?
Paranormal means anything out of the ordinary.  From ghosts to UFO’s to Cryptozoologly (Champy the Lake Champlain Monster, bigfoot, etc) we investigate and research all aspects of it.

2.  That’s cool.  If I want to do that, what do you recommend?
First is to read as much on the subject as possible.  Start by choosing a specific aspect…ghost, UFO’s etc…..and read a lot on those.  Then, seek out a local group to join.  Always remember, that everyone has varying opinions, and you do not have to agree with everyone.  Glean what you can, what seems truthful to you, and leave the rest.

3.  How does your group determine if a location is haunted?
We are an interesting group.  When you see groups on TV, generally they are all one sided in their investigation philosophy…either all scientific or all metaphysical.  We have a great marriage of the two.  We use scientific tools such as EMF (Electomagnetic Field Detectors), Geiger Counters, cameras (Digital, 35MM, Poloroid, Video), Digital Thermometers, etc.  We also use metaphysical tools…dowsing rods, crystals, pendulums, and we have a very talented resident medium who also holds a Doctorate in Parapsychology.

4.  There seems to be a lot of talk about EVPs.  What the heck is an EVP?
EVP means Electronic Voice Phenomenon.  It is an audio recording of voices not present during the time of taping.  These voices quite often occur in ranges that humans cannot actually speak in.  You have to either slow these voices down or speed them up to actually hear what the voice is saying.  Some believe these are actual spirits talking…some believe they are voices "etched" into the environment, in other words, residual energy.

5.  Sometimes I see photos with spots on them.  Are these orbs?
Orbs are a very debated topic in the paranormal research world.  The vast majority of "orb" pictures you will see are simply dust or moisture particles reflecting the light of the flash.  However, we do believe that some "orbs" caught on film are authentic.  We believe that these "orbs’ are the simplest form of energy a spirit can take.  The more authentic orbs show movement.  This movement shows that the object was moving faster than the shutter speed of the camera.

6.  I think the place I live is haunted.  What do I do now?
The first thing I would do would be to contact a reputable local group to investigate….like NNYPRS…from nnyprs.com  Then, I would start a journal of the activities…time, date, occurrence, weather conditions, persons present, etc., whatever seems important.  Also, begin to research the history of your home.

7.  Do you ever communicate with spirits?
For starters, we do not promote the use of Ouija Boards.  They are tools, not toys, that if used incorrectly can be detrimental to the users.  With that said, we are lucky enough to have one member who is a fantastic psychic medium.  With her, we have been able to name persons who have died in the homes, etc, and more.  She is very gifted.

8.  Peter, Raymond, Egon, or Winston?
Peter…he was the cool one!!!!

9.  Casper, Jacob Marley, or Sam Wheat?
Jacob Marley, a little scary, yet his spirit came back to help a friend find his heart before it was too late.

10.  Parting shot!  Ask us here at The Magical Buffet any one question!
How do you like your NNYPRS swag?  (Can we see a pic of you or your "boss" modeling it?)
It seems unlikely that I’m going to get a picture of my boss wearing his gift from www.nnyprs.com.  I mean, he hasn’t even received it as a gift yet!  But just to thrill you all, here is this…..

Merrill McKee is the President and Co-Founder of the Northern New York Paranormal Research Society (www.nnyprs.com).  He has been actively researching with the group since 2001, yet has researched on his own since the age of 8, when he began reading a book about Bigfoot.
