Profile: Bnei Baruch

Bnei Baruch is a group of Kabbalists in Israel, sharing the wisdom of Kabbalah with the entire world. Study materials in over 20 languages are based on authentic Kabbalah texts that were passed down from generation to generation.

History and Origin
In 1991, following the passing of his teacher, Rabbi Baruch Shalom HaLevi Ashlag (The Rabash) Rav Michael Laitman, Professor of Ontology and the Theory of Knowledge, PhD in Philosophy and Kabbalah, and MSc in Medical Bio-Cybernetics, established a Kabbalah study group called “Bnei Baruch.” He called it Bnei Baruch ( “Sons of Baruch”) to commemorate the memory of his mentor, whose side he never left in the final twelve years of his life, from 1979 to 1991. Rav Laitman had been Ashlag’s prime student and personal assistant, and is recognized as the successor to Rabash’s teaching method.

The Rabash was the firstborn son and successor of Rabbi Yehuda Leib HaLevi Ashlag, the greatest Kabbalist of the 20th century. Rabbi Ashlag authored the most authoritative and comprehensive commentary on The Book of Zohar, titled The Sulam Commentary (The Ladder Commentary). He was the first to reveal the complete method for spiritual ascent, and thus was known as Baal HaSulam (“Owner of the Ladder”).

Today, Bnei Baruch bases its entire study method on the path paved by these two great spiritual leaders.

The Study Method
The unique study method developed by Baal HaSulam and his son, the Rabash, is taught and applied on a daily basis by Bnei Baruch. This method relies on authentic Kabbalah sources such as The Book of Zohar, by Rabbi Shimon Bar-Yochai, The Tree of Life, by the Holy Ari, and The Study of the Ten Sefirot, by Baal HaSulam.

While the study relies on authentic Kabbalah sources, it is carried out in simple language and uses a scientific, contemporary approach. Developing this approach has made Bnei Baruch an internationally respected organization, both in Israel and in the world at large.

The unique combination of an academic study method and personal experiences broadens the students’ perspective and awards them a new perception of the reality they live in. Those on the spiritual path are thus given the necessary tools to research themselves and their surrounding reality.

The Message
Bnei Baruch is a diverse movement of many thousands of students worldwide. Students can choose their own paths and the personal intensity of their studies, according to their unique conditions and abilities. The essence of the message disseminated by Bnei Baruch is universal: “unity of the people, unity of nations and love of man.”

For millennia, Kabbalists have been teaching that love of man should be the foundation of all human relations. This love prevailed in the days of Abraham, Moses, and the group of Kabbalists that they established. If we make room for these seasoned, yet contemporary values, we will discover that we possess the power to put differences aside and unite.

The wisdom of Kabbalah, hidden for millennia, has been waiting for the time when we would be sufficiently developed and ready to implement its message. Now, it is emerging as a solution that can unite diverse factions everywhere, better enabling us, as individuals and as a society, to meet today’s challenges.

Bnei Baruch’s Activities
Bnei Baruch was established on the premise that “only by expansion of the wisdom of Kabbalah to the public can we be awarded complete redemption” (Baal HaSulam).

Therefore, Bnei Baruch offers a variety of ways for people to explore and discover the purpose of their lives, providing careful guidance for the beginners and the advanced student alike.

Kabbalah Today
Kabbalah Today is a free monthly newspaper produced and disseminated by Bnei Baruch. It is apolitical, non-commercial, and written in a clear, contemporary style. Its purpose is to expose the vast body of knowledge hidden in the wisdom of Kabbalah at no cost and in a clear, engaging format and style for readers everywhere.

Kabbalah Today is distributed for free in every major U.S. city, as well as in Toronto, Canada, London, England, and Sydney, Australia. It is printed in English, Hebrew, and Russian, and is also available on the Internet, at www.kabtoday.com.

Additionally, a hard copy of the paper is sent to subscribers at delivery cost only.

Internet Website
Bnei Baruch’s homepage, www.kabbalah.info, presents the authentic wisdom of Kabbalah using essays, books, and original texts. The site also contains a unique, extensive library for readers to thoroughly explore the wisdom of Kabbalah. In addition, there is a media archive, www.kabbalahmedia.info, containing more than 5,000 media items, downloadable books, and a vast reservoir of texts, video and audio files in many languages. All of this material is available for free download.

Kabbalah Television
Bnei Baruch established a production company, ARI Films (www.arifilms.tv) specializing in the production of educational TV programs throughout the world, and in many languages.

In Israel, Bnei Baruch broadcasts are aired live through cable and satellite on Channel 98 Sunday through Friday. All broadcasts on these channels are free of charge. The programs are adapted specifically for beginners, and do not require prior knowledge of the material. This convenient learning process is complemented by programs featuring Rav Laitman’s meetings with publicly known figures in Israel and throughout the world.

Additionally, ARI Films produces educational series and documentaries on DVDs, as well as other visual teaching aids.

Kabbalah Books
Rav Laitman writes his books in a clear, contemporary style based on the key concepts of Baal HaSulam. These books serve as a vital link between today’s readers and the original texts. All of Rav Laitman’s books are available for sale, as well as for free download. Rav Laitman has thus far written thirty books, translated into ten languages.

Kabbalah Lessons
As Kabbalists have been doing for centuries, Rav Laitman gives a daily lesson at the Bnei Baruch center in Israel between 3:15-6:00 a.m. Israel time. The lessons are simultaneously translated into six languages: English, Russian, Spanish, German, Italian, and Turkish. In the near future, broadcasts will also be translated into French, Greek, Polish, and Portuguese. As with everything else, the live broadcast is provided gratis to thousands of students worldwide.

Funding
Bnei Baruch is a non-profit organization for teaching and sharing the wisdom of Kabbalah. To maintain its independence and purity of intentions, Bnei Baruch is not supported, funded, or otherwise tied to any government or political organization. Since the bulk of its activity is provided free of charge, the prime source of funding for the group’s activities is donations, tithing—contributed by students on a voluntary basis—and Rav Laitman’s books, which are sold at cost.

New Year’s Resolution

We all make New Year’s Resolutions.  If you claim that you don’t, you’re lying to me and yourself.  Don’t lie to Rebecca, I’m all knowing!  I have a list of wide ranging goals that I’m hoping to achieve in the new year, from getting my articles done in a timely fashion (which seems highly unlikely) to attempting to convince my friends that The Boondocks cartoon on Adult Swim is awesome (even less likely).

I’m sure that many of you would like to add devoting time to charitable works, but if you’re like me the response is, who has the time?  What if I told you that playing a free online vocabulary game could help feed those in need?

It’s true; visit http://www.freerice.com/ to play and help.  If instead of playing computer solitaire when bored at work, we all opted to play this, not only would we be helping others, but also our vocabulary will kick butt!

Everyone have a safe and happy New Year!  Remember, if you’re going to be drinking, either designate a driver or call for a taxi.

Talk to you all next year!

Profile: Northern New York Paranormal Research Society

Text provided by Northern New York Paranormal Research Society

The Northern New York Paranormal Research Society (NNYPRS) was founded in 2001 to provide assistance to people experiencing paranormal activity. NNYPRS will investigate all claims of paranormal activity, from hauntings to UFO sightings to cryptozoological claims. With a combined 60 + years of experience researching all facets of the metaphysical world, NNYPRS is a team of professionals that work with their clients until they are satisfied. NNYPRS does not charge for their work, however, donations are graciously accepted.

In 2001, Merrill McKee, President and co-founder met Dale, Vice-President and co-founder began talking about the need for a team in Northern New York who could help people who were troubled by the seemingly paranormal activities in their homes. In May, they found a couple of friends that were also interested, and formed NNYPRS. Soon after, Merrill met Dave Zirpoli, from Albany . NY, who seemed very interested in joining the team, even though he lived three hours away. After 2 years of joining Merrill and Dale for investigations, as well as finding places in the Albany area to research, Dave was promoted to Capitol Region Team Leader, and a second team was formed based out of Albany, NY. From that point forward, although membership has been ever changing, these 3 individuals have led NNYPRS to a 20 person Investigative team, on numerous investigations, and in gathering a plethora of paranormal data.

What sets NNYPRS apart from most paranormal investigative groups out there is their 2 sided approach to investigations. Many groups only use scientific tools and methods, while others only take a metaphysical approach to the research. NNYPRS marries both sides in a way no other team has been able to do. All investigations are conducted with an open mind and no preconceived notions on whether or not the activity is or isn’t really happening. Because of this, NNYPRS is able to look at all data collected objectively, which enables them to determine if there are natural or supernatural explanations.

Confidentiality is one of NNYPRS highest priorities. All of our clients names, addresses, etc. will be protected and not used in any publications or media releases without their permission. NNYPRS will not come to your home with three large vans with our logos and names painted on the side. Neighbors will believe you are just having some regular company.

NNYPRS performs all of it’s investigations free of charge. The vast majority of our equipment has been paid for my our member’s monthly dues. Donations are accepted and most clients are more than happy to donate to us once we are finished with our investigation. As of right now, NNYPRS is in need of approximately $7000.00 worth of major and minor equipment. Most investigations we perform cost significantly more than the donation given. So, obviously any public donations are very greatly appreciated.

For people who have had odd experiences and have no one to talk to, NNYPRS is there. To contact the team, you can go to their website at http://www.nnyprs.com or by e-mail at mailbag@nnyprs.com. Finally, you can call Merrill at (518) 651-4315.

Doctoral Degree Curriculum:
Your doctorate degree is based on your 10,000 word doctoral dissertation. The student is highly encouraged to pick a subject that he or she can truly expound upon with written text.

Degrees:
You can obtain your minister’s or reverend’s ordination in the Master’s Degree program. Ministerial Ordination is all you need to legally practice as a minister or religious counselor. The primary reason to acquire a doctoral degree is to establish a professional image of yourself as a person well educated in your chosen area of expertise, which is metaphysics. Obtaining a doctorate shows a deeper level of commitment, education, and professionalism. Most people seek out a “doctor” when looking for a counselor, not necessarily a reverend or minister, even though a reverend or minister can legally counsel people. With Doctorate credentials behind your name, you establish yourself as a “doctor” and can list yourself as such in the phone directory with other counselors, rather than as a minister or reverend only.

“With a degree in metaphysics from University Of Metaphysical Sciences you can become a Metaphysician. Career opportunities, metaphysics / metaphysical job: a Metaphysician helps people learn how to change their reality by working with the underlying thoughts and emotions that cause the problems and create manifestations of suffering. This is a different kind of doctor, one who works with the energy that creates disease and illness, rather than treating the resulting symptoms in the physical body or reality. It is most important to reach deeper into the roots of the problems, and by changing the inner landscape, the outer landscape, as pertains to the universal laws of nature, must change with it.” —Christine Breese, founder of UMS

“I wish this kind of university was around in my younger days when I was first exploring the concepts and teachings in metaphysics. I have attended multitudes of workshops, read hundreds of self help books, and spent thousands of dollars on spiritual teachers, but nothing compares to the knowledge I have gained at the University Of Metaphysical Sciences so far, and I am not even finished with the program yet! It is presented in a very organized and easy to follow format, and I am truly enjoying my studies here at UMS.” —YP, UMS Student

“Thank you so much for all of the joy you have brought into my life with this course. I love it!! Everything that you and your staff have done is outstanding.” —DI, UMS Student

Profile: WOLFPAWW

Text provided by Lisa Olive

The website – www.wolfpaww.com – launched in July of this year. We have over 100 members between our sites. Most of our members are from within the United States, but we also have members from New Zealand, Germany, Denmark, Morocco, The Netherlands, Finland, Australia and Columbia.

The organization was inspired by two great ladies – Janice Oberding and Dee Disparti.

I would like to introduce these ladies and explain what parts they played in the formation of the organization.

First, let me introduce Janice Oberding.

You probably recognize her from her experiences with the media, which includes numerous radio and TV interviews and appearances, consulting for the History Channel, Living TV, The Travel Channel and Fox Television. She is also a noted author of fine books such as Haunted Nevada, Ghosthunters Guide to Virginia City and Haunted Gold and Silver. She is a speaker, historian, researcher, paranormal investigator, has done many classes and is very knowledgeable in the paranormal field.

It was this post by Janice that initially set wolfpaww into motion.

“Recently I received a bulletin about The League of Extraordinary Paranormal Women. I jumped on it, reposted and requested an add. Why? Because I’m damn sick and tired of being a shadow woman. Oh I know, we’ve heard and read lots of stuff about shadow people, but it seems to me that the paranormal world is filled with shadow women.

SHADOW WOMEN are the women who work, research and investigate in this field and get overlooked again and again and again. Think not? How many notables (revered, famous whatever ya wanna call it) can you name in the paranormal? Now how many of those people are women? Why is that? I’ve been in this field over 40 years YES people, 40 years! Before you say, “oh man, she’s old.” Let me ask you this—”Did you say that about the men who’ve also been in the field for decades and decades?” Just take a moment to look at some of the conferences, talks, shows, retreats whatever ya wanna call them that are being advertised on the internet…How many of their notable speakers are men? What’s the problem here? Are women not competent enough paranormal researchers? Do we not present well? Can we not entertain and inform our audiences? Perhaps there aren’t enough of us in the field? Or is a certain amount of sexism and good ole’ boyism creeping into this field? Think not? Start surfing some of the paranormal sites here and be sure to read the comments. Are you impressed?

If you’re a woman you may be just the teeniest bit offended. Good! That’s how good old boyism works—you’re offended so you’ll sneak into the shadows and be quiet.

Now you may be thinking, “what can you do? You’re just one old woman!” Well I’ll tell ya what I’m gonna do AND if your tired of it, I suggest you do the same! I will not spend one more nickel on a book, conference, retreat, get together, video in which good old boyism seems to be going on…If you practice good ole boyism don’t expect me to shell out my hard earned cash to support your endeavors.”
It’s all very sad, but true. Women do contribute just as much, if not more, to the paranormal field as our male counterparts and we are forgotten for the most part. It seems as if women in the paranormal field are more likely to be the subject of attacks by skeptics as well. Take Noreen Renier for example. She is a noted psychic who has worked with police departments in many states with unsolved cases on several occasions, with one writer who decided to make it his personal agenda to distroy her and her credibility. But he isn’t the only male writer to try and do so, and she isn’t the only woman. You don’t see these writers trying to distroy any of the male psychics the way they do the women. Another thing, and this has always been, not only in the paranormal field, but in all fields, is the pay that women receive for guest appearances at male dominated conferences. Do you think the organizers of conferences would pay a woman $10,000.00 per appearance, as they do with males, such as Grant and Jason from TAPS?? Of course they don’t!! It’s that good old battle of the sexes that has very much expanded into the paranormal field.

Next, I’d like to introduce you to Dee Disparti.

Like Janice, Dee has been the subject of many interviews with newpapers, has worked with various production crews and appeared on TV programs, both here and internationally. She has been involved in the filming of documentaries, has written articles for newspapers and is currently in the process of authoring a book on hauntings. She has been a featured guest on radio and currently is hosting her own radio show, Paranormal Perceptions, on Blogtalk Radio.

She is a gifted Medium and a Reiki practitioner. She holds classes and lectures on meditation, spirituality, dowsing and the use of pendulums. Dee is a sought after speaker for conferences. Along with all of this, she does tea leaf and private readings, as well.

I have had the pleasure to work with Dee on many investigations. She uses her gifts to help resolve experiences some people find hard to explain. She teaches some to help themselves and their loved ones who have passed on. Often she is actively able to help those who have passed to have a successful transition to the afterlife.
Her love for photography, combined with her abilities to communicate with the other side has enabled her to take some outstanding paranormal pictures. She credits her grandmother as being responsible for educating her on how to utilize some of her abilities. She, too, taught Dee the ancient art of dowsing and the usage of pendulums.

I had mentioned Janice’s wonderful blog to her and she totally agreed that women are not given enough credit for what they do. It was at her suggestion that I start my own organization. She had been pushing and prodding me in this direction for quite some time, all in a nice way of course, as she knows it’s the only way to get me to do things sometimes. After many discussions with both Janice and Dee, wolfpaww was born.
Our website hosts blog pages from Janice Oberding, Dee Disparti and Margot Marrakesh. We offer paranormal news, health and nutrition, fun and shopping pages. We also offer sites that anyone can join – The Ghost Den, Haunt Seekers, Haunt Seekers Forum and GHOPS. As with all new organizations, we are going through the growth process at this time.
Our goal is to eventually expand further by bringing to the paranormal world all female conventions,
conferences and meetings, giving us a chance to rise above and shine. We are also working towards establishing a link of women in the field world wide to help support each other. It would be great if a member visits a place and would be able to contact a friend in that area they have met on the site to go explore haunts with.

Author Bio
Lisa Olive is the founder/owner of a new site for women – wolfpaww – which stands for “Women’s Organization Looking For Paranormal Activity World Wide.” It was formed by women for women in the paranormal field, with an agenda to let the paranormal world know that we are out there and we are tired of being put on the back burner, sort of speak. We believe that it’s time we stood up for ourselves.

Profile: Avalonia.co.uk

Text provided by Avalonia.co.uk

Avalonia.co.uk was founded by the author and priestess Sorita d’Este in 1997 as a resource for everyone interested in the magickal, with a particular emphasis on subjects related to the Wiccan Tradition. In the ten years since first going online the website has grown and undergone many changes and today there are around 200 pages of information available on subjects ranging from Astral Projection, Ceremonial Magick, Crystals, Heka (Egyptian Magick) through to the Gods and Goddesses of the ancient Celts, Greeks, Romans and Egyptians and their mythologies. Avalonia has featured as a recommended resource in both press and other media coverage of Witchcraft and Wicca in the UK over the years, including The Guardian, The Times, Time Out, BBC (Radio & TV) and Channel IV to name but a few.

The website was named after the mythical island of “Avalon” which many today believe to be Glastonbury, Somerset, a small town with a plethora of new age, pagan and crystal shops in its high street, overlooked by the mystical “Tor” with the healing waters of the “Chalice Well” and gardens at its base. Some people actually refer to Glastonbury as “Avalon” in the belief that it was the final resting place of the legendary King Arthur after a grave, which supposedly bore the inscription “Here Lies Arthur, King” was found there in the late 12th century. A reference to Arthur’s final burial place at Avalon can be found in the Mabinogion:

“…After witnessing the destruction of his army in that fatal conflict, Arthur, finding himself mortally wounded, delivered his sword to Caliburn one of his knights, with a request that he would cast it into a certain lake. The knight, thus commissioned, proceeded to the appointed spot, and, standing upon the bank, flung the sword forward with all his might. As it was descending, a hand and arm came out of the lake, and seizing it by the hilt brandished it three times, and disappeared with it in the water. Arthur was afterwards conducted by the Knight to the border of the lake, where he found a little bark moored, in which were Viviane, the Lady of the Lake, and Morgan le Fay, and other ladies, who carried him off to the Island of Avalon, in Fairy-laud, where it was affirmed that he was healed of his wounds, and continued to live in all the splendour of that luxurious country, waiting for the time when he should return once more to take possession of his ancient dominions..”
(Lady Charlotte Guest, 1877)

In fact the grave which was supposedly found at the Abbey in Glastonbury has long been shown to have been an extensive hoax which was intended to encourage pilgrims and raise funds. All the same, today the town is a haven for spiritual seekers of all traditions and paths. Here the enduring legends of Avalon, Morgan Le Fay, Viviane of the Lake and King Arthur lives on, as it does in the many places in the UK and Europe which has been suggested as the “real” Avalon over the years!

Since 2000, Sorita and her partner, the author David Rankine, have also been facilitating a number of events through Avalonia. These have included everything from a very successful pub moot (London, 2001-2004) and the Lapis Companions Open Circle (London, 2003-2006); to a number of picnics in the park, social events and workshops. These events in turn have launched many friendships and successful partnerships over the years! Since swapping their London home for the green rolling hills of the Brecon Beacons in Wales in the summer of 2006 they were unable to continue facilitating the public events in London, but still support serious seekers through the various groups they help facilitate. Information on these can be found at www.avalonia.co.uk/covens_groups

Likewise Avalonia has hosted a lively and intelligent online community for many years, and continues to do so today. Here you will find people from a assortment of magickal and spiritual backgrounds, many levels of experience and from all parts of the world. For more information on the Community Discussion Forums visit: www.avalonia.co.uk/forums. It is an ideal place to network with other likeminded people, whilst exchanging ideas on an extensive variety of subjects.

In early 2001 the “Free 101 Wicca Lessons” was made available on Avalonia, through popular demand for more in depth material Sorita and David embarked on writing a Wicca Homestudy course based on the training program they used within their own Coven at the time. Today introductory correspondence courses on both the Wiccan Tradition and The Tree of Life (Qabalah) are available to students from around the world who wishes to undertake structured training in these subjects. The courses are offered with full support from a mentor and at the lowest possible cost to students. More information on Avalonia Homestudy Courses visit: www.avalonia.co.uk/homestudy.

The section on Wicca remains one of the most popular on Avalonia and is visited by thousands of people every month. Probably not a surprise when considering that one of the reasons the website came into being was to make accurate information available on the tradition, which Sorita and David describe as: “an experiential spiritual system of magick and ceremony that works with the divine as both Goddess and God, and emphasises growth through balance and discipline. This balance, be it of light and dark, feminine and masculine, or active and passive, acts as a dynamic tension to create harmony and enable the individual to progress in their development through understanding their relationship with themselves and the world around them…” in their book “Circle of Fire”. Some articles from this section, such as “Finding a Coven” and “Self-Dedication” has been reproduced dozens of times on other websites over the years, but as articles on Avalonia are revised and updated on a regular basis you will find the latest version in the “Wiccan Tradition” section, so its worth a visit if you enjoyed these articles elsewhere.

Amongst the many pages of information on Avalonia the visitor will also find information on many of the books written by Sorita and David, including extracts from “The Guises of the Morrígan”; “Artemis – Virgin Goddess of the Sun & Moon”; “Climbing the Tree of Life” and “The Isles of the Many Gods” to name but a few. For the very curious you will also find a full listing of their books, as well as books they have contributed to over the years by looking at their biographies. Copies of some of these titles are available through the “Avalonia Bookshop” which can be found at www.avalonia.co.uk/shop

Monthly newsletters, with news and reviews, are available free to subscribers and sent out on a more or less monthly basis. Information on events and new books are also included. If you would like to receive the Avalonia newsletter you will find subscription information at www.avalonia.co.uk/newsletter

Amongst the many resources available on Avalonia you will also find interviews with a number of well known authors, including Kate West, Kala Trobe, Janet Farrar, Stephen Skinner and the lovely Christopher Penczak. Additionally there is also a growing “Book Review” section with books covering a wide range of magickal and spiritual related books every month. The reviewers are all magickal practitioners and they are encouraged to express their opinions and experiences of the books they review with unequivocal honesty.

In 2005 Sorita also launched her own small publishing company, which not surprisingly she named “Avalonia Books”. More information on current titles available from Avalonia, forthcoming titles, as well as submission guidelines for budding authors, can be found at www.avaloniabooks.co.uk

Spirituality and Magick are intertwined, life is a mystery and all of life a ceremony to enjoy and cherish everyday. There is no one “right” path and the diversity on Avalonia.co.uk reflects this vision, there are many paths through the labyrinth and it is up to each of us to find our own way(s) through the mysteries.

Profile: The Pluralism Project

In the past forty years, the religious landscape of the United States has changed dramatically. There are Islamic centers and mosques, Hindu and Buddhist temples and meditation centers in virtually every major American city. The encounter between people of very different religious traditions takes place in the proximity of our own cities and neighborhoods. The results of the 2000 census underscore the tremendous scope of ethnic change in our society, but tell us little about its religious dimensions or its religious significance.

Pluralism has long been a generative strand of American ideology. Mere diversity or plurality alone, however, does not constitute pluralism. There is lively debate over the implications of our multicultural and multireligious society in civic, religious, and educational institutions. How we appropriate plurality to shape a positive pluralism is one of the most important questions American society faces in the years ahead. It will require all of us to know much more about the new religious landscape of America than we presently know.

Since 1991, the Pluralism Project has engaged students and affiliates in the study of the new religious diversity in the United States. We have a special research interest in the communities and religious traditions of Asia and the Middle East that have become woven into the religious fabric of the United States in the past forty years. The overall aims of the Pluralism Project are:

To document and better understand the changing contours of American religious demography, focusing especially on those cities and towns where the new plurality has been most evident and discerning the ways in which this plurality is both visible and invisible in American public life.

To study the religious communities themselves their temples, mosques, gurudwaras and retreat centers, their informal networks and emerging institutions, their forms of adaptation and religious education in the American context, their encounter with the other religious traditions of our common society, and their encounter with civic institutions.

To explore the ramifications and implications of America’s new plurality through case studies of particular cities and towns, looking at the response of Christian and Jewish communities to their new neighbors; the development of interfaith councils and networks; the new theological and pastoral questions that emerge from the pluralistic context; and the recasting of traditional church-state issues in a wider context.

To discern, in light of this work, the emerging meanings of religious “pluralism,” both for religious communities and for public institutions, and to consider the real challenges and opportunities of a public commitment to pluralism in the light of the new religious contours of America.

Today, our work has expanded to include the international dimensions of religious diversity, difference, and dialogue. Our new research initiatives focus on civic engagement, interfaith action, and women’s networks.

North-Eastern Alabama Paranormal Society Case #0256

By Deborah Collard

Home of:
John and Jane Ghost
111 Ghost Town Drive,
GhostTown, Anywhere, USA

NAPS was contacted on June 15 in relation to a possible haunting at the above listed location by the homeowner Jane. Jane states that she is feeling a presence, very strongly in certain areas of her home. She states she would like for NAPS to investigate and see if she is only imagining things or IF there is a presence there. Jane reports no danger, only things that are giving her “roller-coaster” emotions at times and the feeling that she is not alone. Jane states that she and her husband will be on vacation for the next week and to please follow up as soon as we can. NAPS staff Ricci, Christy and Bob went over to the Ghost’s home the following week after their vacation for baseline studies and initial interviewing.

Initial Interview: June 23, 2007
The clients were made aware that there is a certain protocol for NAPS to investigate. Forms are required to be filled out unless the client declines. For example: North-Eastern Alabama Paranormal Society Advice Waiver, NAPS Confidentiality Form, Release and Waiver of Liability Form, Permission Form and others as deemed necessary.

NAPS Interview Sheet:
What exactly is occurring in your home?
Response: Well I feel like my daddy is here. I can smell him and feel his presence.

When did these occurrences begin and how often do they occur:
They have been going on for several years but seem to be getting stronger and more frequent.

Could you please give me a brief history of this property?
Well my parents owned this home until their death and then my husband and I bought it following their deaths.

Could you please give me the exact locations of the activity?
I feel it heavier in the back yard around the grape vines that daddy planted, also in the kitchen and the family den where they entertained.

Would you like for NAPS to investigate these occurrences?
Yes, please.

Notes: The Client seems very concerned about the presence of the spiritual activity. It appears the family is in a decision making process that could affect the home and it staying within the family. During initial walk-thru one can sense the presence of energy, especially in certain areas. Asked client to please journal any unusual occurrences both location and times until we return. Home is in good repair, very elegant and clean.

Investigation: June 29, 2007
NAPS STAFF Present: Deborah, Nathan, Ricci, Brandy, Larry, Robert, Christy and Bob
The team of NAPS met at the investigation point at 7PM. NAPS was greeting warmly by homeowners. Equipment was unloaded and placed in Family Den for disbursement to necessary locations of use. At 7:16pm NAPS staff determined the first place to investigate was the backyard area where the father had spent countless hours working. Lawns manicured with fountains, various statues and woodwork present. EVP’s, Photos and sensory feelings noted at this location. NAPS note the weather to be very hot, overcast as if storm or rain approaching. Baseline temperature reading while exiting to lawn area was 86 degrees then dropped immediately to 82 degrees. Pictures revealed some orbs present during the daylight hours, these could be associated with the mugginess and the ponds located in the backyard. While in the backyard temperature variances of 86-90 degrees based on location. EVP’s no evidence revealed.

At 7:37pm the Family Living Room had a baseline reading of 68 degrees. At this same time wireless cameras were being set up in the Family Den, also the original bedroom of the parents. HI 8 was set up in Family Den directed in the location of the Father’s private Bath.

At 7:40 EMF reading spiked in the Father’s private bath from 15 to 90. Determined bad fuse in bathroom. Homeowner replaced.

At 7:55 Living room baseline reading 68-69 degrees. Living room video being monitored by NAPS staff member. Noted various orbs and slight movement of chair in LR. Homeowner states this was her mother’s favorite chair.

From 8:00 until 9:00 NAPS staff member into Living Room sitting in the dark observing. Determined it would be time to bring in dousing rods. Client opens closet door and distinctly smells her father’s scent. Worked with dousing rods questioning whether or not spirit present. Yes responses recorded. Client pulled out two fur coats. Client asked me to determine with the dousing rods which coat the father liked the best on her mother. Dousing rods made determination, correct.

Around 9 pm NAPS staff members to the basement area. The deceased father’s belt was still hanging where it had been since death. Daughter had not removed. NAPS Deborah held the belt and feelings overcame her of a rapid heart rate and pain to the left side of her face. So Noted. Battery drainage noted on camera by Deborah . NAPS Ricci had a feeling of nausea. Note: There were chemicals located next to each other that would create a headache or stomach upset to someone sensitive to these things. Ricci and Nathan debunked.

At 9:06 Bob, Ricci and Larry to Master Bedroom to find it very peaceful but as they were leaving the EMF meter spiked. Unknown cause.

At 9:14 Guest Bedroom #1 had feeling of energy in the room. K-2 Spikes on bed. Found that bed was grandparents of client’s husband.

At 9:49 return to basement, Ricci at this time started having a headache. It was definitely determined because of chemicals in basement.

Around 10PM Larry is in the kitchen/DR area while monitoring video feels someone touch his neck. It made him jerk, due to startling. It was determined later that this dining room table was removed from a “supposed” Haunted Estate many years before.

NAPS staff continued to monitor the home with technical equipment for the next couple of hours. EVP’s continued to be taken throughout the home. Photo’s as well.

Deborah decided to meditate and see if anything would come to her in this altered state of consciousness. She could see a woman with short hair, brown hair with gray streaking wearing a snap housecoat. The housecoat appears green in color with some type of florals, material very soft and puff sleeves noted. The housecoat comes down below the knees slightly and the woman is wearing slippers with some type of bow on the top. A little dog, appears old, dog is black and white. The lady has pierced ears but no earrings. She is wearing two wedding bands, one wide and one thin. She has very thin hands. The woman was slender, not heavy. Someone touched her face and she stopped feeling and seeing. Ricci sat down with Deborah and said she keeps seeing a heart locket or necklace with a thin chain.

REVEAL: July 1, 2007 @ 1:30PM
NAPS STAFF Present for Reveal: Deborah, Ricci, Brandy and Bob
Both Homeowners present

NAPS Staff was welcomed warmly to the residence. We brought along the laptop for evidence reveal. We explained to clients that there was no significant photo’s and that video did not reveal any anomalies. One EVP we were unable to debunk, a female voice calling out the name of the female homeowner. After listening to the EVP, client stated that it sounded like her mother calling her. We noted that the high EMF spikes in the bathroom and at one electrical outlet were something that the homeowner should follow up on with an electrician. We concluded that the homeowner should store chemicals, pesticides and other things of this nature in a more appropriate manner as not to risk headaches or illness.

With this noted on the hard science side we continued to the soft science side of the evidence.
We concluded that Staff member Larry had indeed been touched by something of an unknown nature while in the kitchen/DR area. I expressed to the home owner that I had questions related to my meditative state whereas certain things were coming through to me. They were as follows and response from homeowner noted.

1. A woman with short hair, brown hair with gray streaking wearing a snap housecoat.

2. Response from female homeowner: My mother wore the snap housecoats; they were her favorites for lounging around the house. She wore the floral ones. Mother did have slippers with bows on the top, like house shoes she wore with her housecoat. Mother and Daddy did have a cocker spaniel and it lived a very long life. She continues to state that her mother had pierced ears but could not wear earrings; she was allergic to some of the metals in them. Finally she stated that her mother did wear both a wide band and thin band on her 4th finger. She states she loved her jewelry.

3. Ricci asked her if her mother had a ‘heart’ locket or necklace on a thin necklace. The homeowner smiled and said yes she did, it’s in the safety deposit box.

4. Deborah had the pain on the left side of her face and racing heart while holding the belt of the homeowners father while down in the basement. The homeowner states that her father had been killed at the intersection just at the end of the street. That he died instantly. That he had a bad heart and that he was struck on his left side.
We concluded our reveal and lovely conversation with the clients. The clients were thrilled with the kind and heartfelt service of NAPS Staff. The homeowner asked if we would come back again at a later date when we had time. The homeowners requested that we form a circle and hold hands while the male homeowner led us in prayer in a most gracious manner. NAPS Staff departed with the decision that although not haunted that the presence of the deceased parent’s spirits are still present in a good way.

Founder, North-Eastern Alabama Paranormal Society
Haunted Southern Nights
Director of the Paranormal OmegaCon

Deborah again finds herself looking up in amazement at a beautiful monument located in Shiloh National Military Park. This is so what she enjoys doing. Exploring the past! Deborah, who is Cherokee by blood, enjoys reaching back into the past to connect her with the spiritual world. The way she celebrates this passion is through her studies of the paranormal. Deborah considers herself an ‘oldie’ in this venue, knowing that 30 years ago the only tools she used to investigate with were her flashlight and whomever she could drag along with her to see if she could find answers to the many questions that wandered through her mind. Did the spirits of those who had passed still have a grasp on the earth via earthbound spirits? Was there truly a form of life after death? Were there those who chose not to leave for reasons unknown? Today she enjoys her life as a wife, mother, and even a Nana! Her quest for answers has never ceased. As technology progressed so did she and many years later has a very solid team of paranormal investigators. The Team is NAPS – North-Eastern Alabama Paranormal Society. NAPS was officially formed and being sought out to do investigations in 2004. If asked she will tell you NAPS is her family. Deborah teaches workshops, does lectures and panels on the paranormal. It is important to her that ghost hunters know just what they are doing and the proper way to do it!

In January 2007 Deborah and NAPS became a viable part of OmegaCon. OmegaCon promises to be the greatest sci/fi, fantasy and paranormal convention to ever come to the State of Alabama. OmegaCon will be held in Birmingham, Alabama on March 14-16, 2008.

Now NAPS is taking it one step further with the guidance of OmegaCon Productions. Haunted Southern Nights was always a dream to Deborah but OmegaCon Productions is making it a reality. Starting in July, NAPS will begin filming a series of paranormal investigations in some of the hottest locations in the South.

Deborah hosts NAPS Live Radio “Haunted Southern Nights” along with her friend and colleague Nathan Levan, NAPS investigator and VP of OmegaCon. Tuesday nights are very much looked forward to. Deborah seems to never meet a stranger or a ghost she can’t be friends with.

10 Questions about the Baha’i Faith

1. What is the Baha’i Faith?

Thank you for this opportunity to respond. I’m tempted to give Louis Armstrong’s classic reply, “Man, if you don’t know, I can’t tell you,” but you might get an idea that it’s some kind of jazz heaven, which actually may not be too far off. Baha’is believe in Progressive Revelation, meaning that from time to time God raises up Messengers to educate humanity, such as Buddha, Abraham, Krishna, Moses, Zoroaster, Christ and Muhammad and that the latest one arrived in the 19th century and is named Baha’u’llah – meaning “ Glory of God” in Arabic. He lived and taught mostly under exile and in imprisonment in Middle Eastern lands such as Iran, Iraq, Turkey and what is now Israel. These Messengers reiterate the eternal spiritual truths that are the foundation of all world religions, but also give social teachings for the age in which They appear. This age particularly needs guidance for an emerging global consciousness; ethics and morality for international travel, finance, ecology, communication, science and technology; and the realization that the entire globe and its inhabitants are in the same boat traveling together. (As Baha’u’llah stated, “The earth is but one country, and mankind its citizens.”)

Humanity on its own has no hope of solving the colossal challenges besetting it today. One of the most remarkable elements of this Revelation is that it gives not only a vision of the new World Order, but actually gives a blueprint of how to achieve it. So Baha’is worldwide are endeavoring to establish this order right in the midst of the crumbling of one human institution after another. Baha’u’llah has given the believers this directive: “It is incumbent upon every man of insight and understanding to strive to translate that which hath been written into reality and action,” and emphasized that we all have a part to play: “All men have been created to carry forward an ever-advancing civilization.”

2. What are some the basic teachings of the faith?

Every major world religion teaches the same basic things, those being the nature of God and Truth, morality and virtue, prayer and worship. The emphasis is different, according to the needs of the times: Judaism emphasized the law, Christianity focused on love and good works and Islam concentrated on submission to the Will of God. The Baha’i Faith’s overriding value is unity: God is one, His Messengers are one, religion is one, humanity is one. Therefore the thousand-year mission of the Baha’is is to effect the organic unity of the entire human race, for it is written “The well-being of mankind, its peace and security, are unattainable unless and until its unity is firmly established.” Principles that accompany this central mission are removal of prejudice, gender equality, universal education, universal systems of governance, justice and currency, and a language through which the whole world can communicate. One other very important Baha’i principle is that mankind has progressed to the point where each individual’s spiritual progress is his or her own responsibility; therefore it behooves every person to independently investigate Truth and reality for him or herself. Ergo, there is no clergy in the Baha’i Faith.

3. How does the Baha’i community view and interact with other faiths?

Baha’is regard all humanity as their brethren. The Founder proclaimed, “Consort with the followers of all religions in a spirit of friendliness and fellowship.” They tend to spearhead and are often over-represented at interfaith gatherings. . Just once I would like see a Baha‘i jump up and yell, “All you heathens are going to Hell!” but (sigh) it just isn’t going to happen. (This is just kidding, of course.)

4. For our readers who may have not have heard of the religion before now, is there a fictional character in television or film that embodies the ideals of the faith?

Ha ha. I consulted some of my Baha’i friends on this one and got suggestions such as “McGyver,” since he used non-violent technological ingenuity to solve problems, the humble Frodo Baggins on his glorious quest of faith or “Star Trek” with its multi-ethnic co-operation boldly braving the final frontier.

5. What holidays do Baha’is observe?

There is a calendar of 19 months of 19 days each, with a few extra Mardi-Gras-type celebratory days at the end to round out the solar year. And the faith has holy days celebrating the births and deaths of the central figures, as well as a few others, such as the Day of the Covenant, Nov. 26, celebrating the fact that God does not leave humanity adrift without guidance. Individually, believers tend to celebrate just about any festival of any religion or culture with other friends – we love a party!

6. What is the biggest misconception, if any, about the religion?

The Baha’i Faith is not, nor ever was, a sect of Islam. It grew out of an Islamic environment, as did Buddhism out of Hinduism or Christianity out of Judaism. Also, since it is so all-embracing, some get the idea that it is eclectic and syncretistic, drawing from the good points of bygone traditions and philosophies, or that it accepts all faiths as being equally true and valid. In actuality, the Baha’i Faith regards all major world religions as one Faith of God, “eternal in the past, eternal in the future” and itself as simply the latest stage in this unfolding faith of the one God Who has been called by many names. Its principles and beliefs have been divinely revealed in the same way as the Ten Commandments, the Vedas, the Dhammapada and the Qur’an have.

7. According to www.religionfacts.com, Dizzy Gillespie, Carole Lombard and Rainn Wilson were/are all Baha’i. Would you be offended if I said that was really cool?

Many distinguished people are Baha’is, but they don’t get obnoxious, obsequious or obstreperous about it. They found universities, establish socio-economic projects and are inventors and innovators. The head of state of Samoa is Baha’i, as was Queen Marie of Romania and other royalty. The faith has attracted great minds such as Tolstoy to Tagore to Khalil Gibran. It has even been rumored that President Woodrow Wilson got the idea for the League of Nations from his Baha’i daughter! Another Khalil, Khalil Green, shortstop of the San Diego Padres, is perhaps the most well known Baha’i presently in popular culture. In America, the duo of Seals and Crofts (“Summer breeze, makes me feel fine . . . . “ c’mon sing it with me now) spread the faith by giving talks after their concerts in the 1970s. Other Baha’is include K. C. Porter (producer to Santana and Ricky Martin) and British funnyman Omid Djalili (remember him from Whoopi’s sitcom?) Cool! Hot!

8. Do you care to comment on the plight of the Baha’is in Egypt?

The Baha’is in Egypt are a fairly small community, but have been placed in a quandary. They are required to carry ID cards that identify their religion. They have no problem with this, as Baha’is in every country are obedient and loyal to their governments. But Baha’is in Egypt have only three choices: Christianity, Judaism or Islam. It’s like those dating sites or online questionnaires where you only have a limited number of responses, none of which apply. But there is no “other” option, and it will not let you skip the question or continue without answering. Baha’is cannot lie about their religion, and without these ID cards they have no access to education, medical services, employment or many other basic services. So they are continuing to work to get the Baha’i Faith official recognition so they can have legal status just like other Egyptian citizens. This Baha’i blog has a lot of information about the situation: http://bahai-egypt.blogspot.com/.

9. Where can I go to learn more about the religion?

Even though there are only about 5 million Baha’is worldwide, we are spread like a thin film over the entire planet, including in such unlikely places as Greenland, North Korea, the Faroe Islands, Tasmania, Alaska, Mongolia, Madagascar, Botswana and virtually every island in the Pacific. So with a little checking in phone books or word of mouth, a human representative of probably the most hospitable community in the world can be found. But beware: You will be plied with tea and sweets and all the literature on the faith you’d ever want. Baha’is, however, do not proselytize. Since it purports to be the most truly international and universal expression of spirituality, it is not surprising that Baha’i sites abound. A couple of main ones are www.bahai.org and www.bahai.us. You are most welcome to contact this author at gezabahai@yahoo.ca.

10. Parting shot! Ask us here at The Magical Buffet any one question?

This is confusing, but if I read it correctly, you want me to ask you a question. Okay, I’ll be brief, I mean boxer. I see that you love feasting at the salad bar of heavenly delights, but do you ever get spiritual indigestion?

Yes

Bio of Geza Farkas:
Geza (rhymes with amaze-a) Farkas, the Funky Flutist of Faith, became a Baha’i in 1997 after a lifetime of study of the works of the world’s great mystics, saints, and seers, since he sensed that in it appeared that which has never appeared before, namely a blueprint by which all of human civilization can be spiritualized, and not just a few special individuals. Hungarian by birth, Canadian by nationality, and Indian in spirit, he has recently emigrated to Chicago and lives near the Baha’i House of Worship for the North American Continent in Wilmette, known as the “Mother Temple of the West.”

Organization Profile: The Church of Iron Oak

text provided by The Church of Iron Oak

The Church of Iron Oak , ATC (www.ironoak.org ) is a Wiccan church located in the Melbourne , Florida area. It is composed of several covens and groves under an administrative High Priest and High Priestess. Iron Oak was formed in 1992 as a church affiliated with the Aquarian Tabernacle Church of Index, Washington.

The Wiccans are Neo-pagans, who see the world as a temple for worship. As such, the term “church” refers not to a building, but to an organization. Pagans are those of the many faiths that are not Jewish, Christian or Islamic. On the other hand, neo-pagan refers to the pagan movement that began its rapid growth during mid-last century as it spread to the United States. The largest group within neo-paganism is Wicca. Included within the Wiccan belief is that our ancestors of years ago still teach us the lessons of life and death and that we are all interconnected with nature. That is, all men and women, all humankind, animals and plants are one in spiritual unity.

Iron Oak is English Traditional Wicca with an additional philosophical leaning called the “Smith Path”. English Traditional Wicca is the tradition followed by the Aquarian Tabernacle Church (http://aquatabch.org) led by Pete Pathfinder Davis. Wiccans have a faith in Goddess and God and the sanctity of all living things. Wiccans are their own priests and priestesses, for they believe that each person has Goddess and God within them and each person may make their own communion and bond with deity. Since Wiccans are pagans, they neither believe in, nor worship Satan since it reflects a concept that exists only in Christianity, Judaism and Islam. This is true for other pagan religions such as Hinduism and Native American paths. Wiccans see the universe governed by cause and effect and are a part of that universe, not to own it or control it, but to respect it and sanctify it. Wiccans also believe in magic, the power of faith.

The Smith Path refers to the principal that each person can reach their goals in life by their attitude and their work. This may seem like a simple truism were it not for the fact that many are not successful. For this, the founders of Iron Oak observed that the ancient ironsmiths combined their work with their religious practice making the work itself part of the connection with divinity. This was a concept later adopted by the alchemists with their quest for the sacred work.

The Iron in the name ‘Iron Oak’ refers to the sacred metal of the ancient ironsmiths. These smiths were accepted as shamans and magicians because they used the metal from the sky god given to them in the form of meteoric iron. In Babylonia , for example, the name for iron was anbar, or God’s metal, sometimes translated as sky-metal. An was the god of the sky. The smiths regarded their use of iron as a sacred work often performing rituals while undertaking certain activities such as setting up a forge. Because they used extremely hot fires and were able to create powerful tools and weapons, they were regarded as powerful magicians by their countrymen.

Because of the respect shown to the smiths by their countrymen, the smiths themselves were transformed in the way they regarded themselves. They regarded their work as sacred and the care and devotion to quality became part of their spiritual connection to deity.

The Oak relates to the tree that was held in high regard by the ancient Druids. The name “druid” itself is translated as “oak-wise” and it included people who had high specialization and high status in ancient Celtic society. The tree is known for its magnificence and strength. It is strong not by rigidity but by bending in the wind without breaking. Together, the iron and the oak represent the combining of strength through flexibility and the transformation of the sacred work.

Iron Oak Activities

Iron Oak has many programs for community outreach and for training. The church is a regular supporter of Project Response, a local AIDS victim support group. Members who attend workshops and rituals are asked to bring donations for Project Response.

We celebrate the eight sabbats of the year and are open to guests outside as well as inside the church. We also conduct a number of workshops including the widely-known Athame Maker’s Workshop. The latter provides attendees an opportunity to make metal ritual implements by casting or forging under the watchful eye of the members of the Guild of Govannan. This is an organization of smiths within Iron Oak who are trained in the operation of the equipment and a variety of metal and wood working techniques.

As others in the Neo-pagan world, Iron Oak teaches members to have a high regard for nature. Humankind and the rest of nature are part of the whole fabric of divinity. All living things share the divine spark of life. For that reason, members are asked to do the common sense things of conserving our resources and avoiding polluting our lands and waters.

Iron Oak has a number of training programs. One is the Outer Court, the general entry point for membership. The Outer Court is a class to introduce interested people to both Iron Oak and to Wicca. It is composed of a series of meetings held on the first and third Thursday of the month. This format gives an opportunity for those to both meet Iron Oak priests and priestesses and provide each student with a comprehensive study of Wicca and its practices. To join this class, just call (321) 722-0291.

Once a person graduates the series of classes, they may affirm to the church and attend workshops and other special events. They may also join one of the Iron Oak covens for more advanced training. The advanced training is part of a clergy program that can lead to full ordination in the internationally known Aquarian Tabernacle Church. Ordination at Iron Oak is accepted by the Aquarian Tabernacle Church and at ATC churches throughout the world.

Iron Oak church leaders are encouraged to participate in outreach and social programs. This includes providing teachers to local colleges as part of world religions study and participating in DEOMI, the Defense Equal Opportunity Management Institute located at Patrick Air Force Base near Satellite Beach, Florida. The mission of DEOMI is to provide training in the administration of military, EO, EEO, and human relations.

Iron Oak was also the founder of the Florida Pagan Gathering (http://www.flapagan.org ), currently the largest pagan festival in Florida with more than 500 attendees twice a year. This festival grew from the Iron Oak Freedom Fest and was renamed when the festival was spun-off from Iron Oak to become a separate entity.
