Oneonta Spiritual Arts Fair: The Aftermath

As you all know, this past Saturday I attended the 5th Annual Spiritual Arts Fair in Oneonta, NY.

When we arrived, we paid our $3 per person entrance fee and got our hands stamped so we could come and go. Once inside I made a beeline for the primary reason I wanted to make the trip.

And I found her, Llewellyn author Deborah Blake. She had a small table set up where she was selling, and signing, her books, including her latest “The Goddess is in the Details”. She was also doing mini-Tarot readings and had a small selection of the jewelry she makes on display. It was so wonderful to meet the author. What can I say? If you read her books, you really do know her. She is just as warm, friendly, and funny as her writing. I was as happy as a fan girl to buy a copy of “The Goddess is in the Details” and have her sign it to me!

While Jim was taking pictures of us, Barbara Ellen from AURA’ bout You! asked if he would mind taking some pictures of her set up. In return, she took an energy field photo of me and interpreted the results. She was pleasantly surprised to learn that not only would I email her the photos Jim took, but that I ran a website and would be writing about all of this! Barbara was such an entertaining lady. From my photo she told me I was friendly, open, social, that I have bright ideas, and that I’m optimistic. This is just hitting the high points; she gave me a complete form detailing my results and how they were interpreted. Barbara also mentioned she does hand readings based off your fingerprints, which sounded interesting. Although I hate seeing photos of myself, I am happy to have such a unique souvenir from the event.

The room was packed with vendors and after a very short period, we found our arms filled with goodies. It was then we decided to make a trip to the car and unload our loot and take a long look at the workshop schedule to see what all we wanted to do.

This took some real time and consideration because there were over twenty workshops taking place! So many that I couldn’t even consider seeing any of the 13 readers and/or healers working at the event. After some time a battle plan was made and a schedule was set. Then, the afternoon took an unexpected turn.

With the difficult workshop decisions made, we went out for lunch. It was while leaving the restaurant that Jim realized the car keys were not in any of his pockets. Yep, upon walking back to our car we could easily see our keys sitting in the cup holder with all our doors securely locked.

First off, my insurance company offers 24-hour roadside assistance for just such occasions. If only I didn’t have all that information in the glove compartment! Next, the nice folks at the Unitarian Universalist Society of Oneonta (the location of the Fair) let us have a wire coat hanger to mangle and shove into our car in an attempt to press the unlock button. That wasn’t working. I then went back into the Fair and cried to Deborah Blake who sprung into action and started grabbing people associated with the event and asking, “Do you know how to break into a car?” Everyone can rest easy knowing that the Spiritual Arts Fair community is lacking a criminal element. However, Deborah directed me to Andrew, the spouse of the henna artist at the Fair, who said he had some tools and would take a look.

With Andrew’s assistance, and odd assortment of tools, including brake line, we got into our car. Jim isn’t a hugging sort of guy, but I think he was sorely tempted to give this fellow a big ol’ bear hug. After double-checking with him that his wife was the henna artist, Jim and I decided it was time for me to get my first henna tattoo.

We went to Jessica Halter’s, better known as The Henna Lady, table to tell her of our success thanks to her husband. I then went about selecting an image to be put on my hand with henna. Moments later I had a beautiful flower design on my hand for only $5! Jim offered her a twenty-dollar bill, and she went to give us change. We then asked if she was sure it was only $5, I mean her husband saved us, and she was quite certain it was only $5. What a classy lady! I love my henna tattoo! On a side note, I want to say how impressed I am that not only is she a skilled artist and a kind soul, but she is insured. Insured! How responsible and professional! I have told my husband that I want to have a party where she gives everyone henna body art!

I finished getting my tattoo just in time to make it to the first workshop I wanted to attend, which was the Shadow Chasers Paranormal Investigators and Research. Immediately following that it was a discussion of Hindu Astrology with Philip Hosely. Right after that, it was Zen Mediation with a representative of The Three Treasures Zen Center of Oneonta! I told you there were many workshops! Jim and I agree that the Zen Meditation workshop was the best of the three we attended. Oddly, it had the smallest turn out. If you were at the Fair and didn’t go to the Zen Meditation workshop, you missed out.

After all of that we said our good-byes to Deborah Blake and Jessica Halter, expressing again that her husband kicks ass, and made the drive home. Exhausted we grabbed some take out and crashed. It was a good day.

Abbey Ghost Hunters: Danby Castle Investigation

Danby Castle is believed to have been built in the 11th century on high ground at Castleton by the de Brus family who also built Skelton Castle. Stone from the first Danby Castle was used at the beginning of the 14th Century to construct the present palatial castle. It was unusual in having a projecting tower in each corner.

Present from AGH were, Mark, Angie, Tracey, Jazz and Dave

10:00pm We arrived at the Castle and made our way to one the of the two rooms that is still roofed and is known as the jury room, this is because the other room next to it, is a court room. Not their original use but today the two rooms are used by the Danby Court Leet. We unloaded our equipment into the room, and then went for a look around the impressive larger than expected castle. The Castle does not look that big from a distance or even close up, it is only until you the grounds itself that you see how big and most impressive it is.

10:30pm We went for a quick walk around to see if Angie could pick anything up straight away, near the car park on one side of the enclosed barn, she had sensed a lady called Mary who worked here as a maid, she feels she comes here a lot in visitation, as we entered into an open area the other side of the enclosed barn she sensed a little boy comes around here, he is not here yet but she can feel his energy, we went through a doorway into what appeared to be the Hall. Angie whispers to me ” there’s lots of people in here and they will watch us tonight”. We then went through another doorway which led into a small room and into the kitchen.

11:00pm Mark went for a walk around with Jazz and Dave to show them the Castle grounds and the different rooms there where, before we went for a drink.

00:00am (midnight) As we left the Court room to go down the stairs, Mark noticed on one of the walls in a window stood what looked like a figure, it then appeared to move away from the window and then return. After watching for a few minutes to see if something may have been casting what may have been some kind of reflection, the figure then moved to the other side of the window before returning. The others by now had seen Mark observing this and they too had started to watch it. We went over to where the window was to get a closer look and to see if there was anything that could have been causing this, it soon became clear that it could not have been anything else other than a figure. The window was in a room we believe may have been the Hall. We all agreed it only appeared to be the dark shape of a figure, and Mark believed the shape to be female, keeping this to himself to see if anyone else said the same, but no one did. Angie then as she still watched the window turned and said “she is residual, and is just walking back and forth as if pacing and waiting for someone”, this had Mark intrigued and said to Angie “who said it was a woman”, Angie turned and said she stands there a lot, a female is what I am sensing. Then Jazz and Tracey both turn and say they feel as if we are in a crowded room and it is like we are being watched by many. This is what Angie had said to me “there’s lots of people in here and they will watch us tonight”. We moved into the Kitchen to have a quick look around but Angie and Tracey wanted to be on the other side of the wall. We moved back through the hall and around to the outside of the kitchen. As we stood by the wall Everyone except Mark heard what they described as mans gruff, but no one was about. As we looked up to the top of the wall above the kitchen Mark and Tracey saw a small figure, Dave had seen something move but said it was too quick for him to make out what it was, Angie had already moved much closer to the wall and stared straight up at the same area, we then noticed she was stood at the base of some stairs that led to where we had seen the small figure. Then as she started onto the stairs both Angie and Tracey said “James” at the exact same time, they both then described a small boy Dressed in Blue, We stayed for a while but nothing else occurred.

00:30am We went into the Jury room and set up a camcorder, as Angie could sense someone has been in here whilst we were outside and that we would get someone in here again SOON. As we had pulled up earlier in the car park Angie had seen a small boy peering out of the window in this room, so we set up the camera in the far corner with a wide angled lens attached. In the room both Jazz and Angie heard what they sounded like someone dragging their nails across the big table. Then Angie and Tracey left the room, Mark turned to look in the corner just behind the camcorder and saw what he believed was a shadow, and took several photos in quick succession, Jazz turned to him and said I am drawn to that corner too, Mark asked him had he seen anything but he hadn’t, he was just drawn there as if someone would appear. Angie and Tracey re entered the room after going to check what they thought sounded like footsteps, Angie went straight to the corner and says “she feels like she is shaking, not in fear or through nerves, but as if in anger” Jazz starts to feel headachy! we took turns at standing in the corner and I (Mark) felt nothing but Jazz felt as if his chest was tight an jittery, Dave felt some palpitations and whilst he explained this he sounded very short of breathe. We decided to place a sensor light in the corner, facing into the corner itself, after it had been there for about five minutes and we had moved to the other end of the room, the light came on. Although none of us seen anything move passed it. We decided it may be worth trying some glass divination in this room.

01:15am Because of what we had been hearing and seeing, we had decided to try some glass divination, so we all sat at the table in the room. Angie felt there was now a couple of spirits in the room but felt we may not get much response as they appeared confused by our presence, we decided to try anyway to see if we could build some confidence with the spirits that were present. As we sat and placed our fingers on the glass, Angie says “In memory of Margaret” Mark turns to Angie and said he had the name Margaret in his mind at that time, we sat for a bit whilst Angie tried to make sense of the statement but she was unable to gain any information regarding it. Tracey and Mark who sat facing each other both suddenly felt an urge of emotional sadness and an intense pain in the left side, Angie says “No husband, Margaret had no Husband, (there is a pause, then) sorry Lady Margaret, she is stood near the fireplace dressed almost in Tudor Style clothing, she has some kind of veil over her face” Both Mark and Tracey are still getting the pain in the left side and it seems to intensify as Angie says Margaret, as if some kind of confirmation that the name means something. Angie then says “I feel this Lady walks the corridor as well as this room”. there is another short pause when Angie says “Robert” and looks behind Jazz who complains of sharp pains in his back at that time. Angie feels 18th Century character she asks him “would you like to join us Robert” everyone heard a gruff “Huh” sound, Angie feels a pain in the head with this man and this had something to do with his death, she feels he died outside on what is now the lane. She feels he may have been struck about the head, as she says he is walking around the table. Mark felt someone bang into his chair, and it moved. Tracey has an image of a man who has a moustache and is holding a pipe. Angie then senses a young girl Emma Jane she is one of two little girls who lived here. Things suddenly went very quiet and we ended the seance.

01:50am We went to the Barn to see if anything could be picked up in here, Angie had already sensed a woman passing through the room, and was intrigued as to who she was. We stood around for a short while to see if anyone got any unusual feelings of any kind. We decided to try some glass divination in this room, and as we checked the thermometer we could now see it had dropped to 0.1ºc. We also decided to set up the sensor light in here and took E.M.F readings, to which we got none. Angie says she can sense someone in the room, and she feels a real calmness with this person, she felt she was observing us and found our attire unusual, we tried communicating with her, using the glass, but got no responses. Angie felt this woman was not ready to come forward at this time, as she was still trying to work out what our intentions where. We then stood in the room discussing how everyone felt, and all agreed there was a real calmness in here. Angie said she felt the spirit in here was and could be Tactile (able to touch us), Then as she talked some more and gave us the name Betty, she felt someone touch her back. Mark asks “Roger, are you here Roger” he asked this as Angie was standing next to him and Mark thought Angie had whispered Roger into his ear, but it was not Angie! Mark was adamant he heard a woman’s voice whisper the name into his ear. Nothing else happened after that, so we decided to move to another area.

02:25 We made our way to the Stables. Again Angie could sense a female presence, it was a different one to the others she had sensed in other parts. Angie says this woman was accused of being a witch, she described as being roughly just short of 4 foot, and she had a dirty complexion and had no footwear at all, her hair was very messy. She feels she was brought here and then taken into another room that was adjoined. There is only one door in and out of this room, but there are signs another door was once here. As we stood in this room Angie said she again felt as though she had been touched, she could feel her hood on her coat being tugged, she felt it was the little woman. Tracey and Jazz who had moved to another part of the room both felt in the same area, an overwhelming horrible feeling in their stomachs. They both complained they felt really sick and had to move away from that particular spot. Upon moving only 3 foot away they both said the feeling had gone, Jazz stepped back into the area and immediately felt it again. After a short period of not getting anything else, Angie said she felt a settlement once stood on this same ground, long before the Castle was built. And she felt we were stood on what was a burial ground.

03:00 We went for a break.

03:30 We went to the cellar, an area some people believe was once a dungeon. I asked each of the team members what they felt this area may have been, but no one mentioned Dungeon. In fact there was a sensing from each member of a wine cellar instead. It is believed that the room above, the Court room was originally sleeping quarters for the owners, and the room below (the room we were in) was in fact the wine cellar. No one sensed anything in this room and we left after 30 minutes.

04:00am We all agreed to end the night.

Final thought: For myself the Castle proved most interesting as I had seen more than most locations we have visited. The team felt overall it is an active place. And everyone wants to go back to see if we can unravel its secrets!! Also research is proving a little difficult for this Investigation regarding names.

Beating Perez Hilton

Frequent readers of The Magical Buffet know that I LOVES me some Perez Hilton. I love that he’s a hard-working, self-promotion machine who happens to have a pretty good ear for music. I know, he’s easy to put down, but I will never do that. Perez Hilton’s success is the American dream in action. His website shows up on loads of top whatever lists of influential/powerful blogs. That’s why I am so pleased to tell you….

I beat him! I beat Perez Hilton! I haven’t felt this bad ass since I beat MTV to Raven Digitalis!

Today while catching up on my Perez I noticed that yesterday, November 13, 2008 he had this. Yep. Readers of The Magical Buffet already know about Movember because thanks to friend and art contributor Will Hobbs I posted about it on October 27, 2008.

I know it’s not that big of deal, and it’s not like I really “scooped” Perez on a story, but since Hilton gets the fame, money, and celebrity connections, I’m opting to claim Movember as a resounding victory for the Buffet. Go me!

By the way, there is still plenty of time left to celebrate Movember right by donating to the cause. You can definitely up your Magical Buffet street cred by donating to Will Hobbs’ Mo!

Movember is Nearly Here!

Just the other day I received an entertaining, and intriguing, email from friend, artist, Buffet supporter, and dude that does our art, Will Hobbs.

Hi All,

During Movember (the month formerly known as November) my coworkers and I are growing Moustaches. That’s right, we’re bringing the Mo back because I’m passionate about tackling men’s health issues and being proactive in the fight against prostate cancer. “But, Will…” you may say, “You already have a full beard!!!” That’s right. But, imagine how ridiculous I’ll look when I shave it into a sweet and trashy Mo. So, help me help the cause, and I’ll send the top donor the clippings, suitable for framing! That’s right! My beard goes to the top donor*.

*Not for use in witchcraft, please.

This made me ask, what the heck is Movember? Well, according to the Movember website:

Movember (the month formerly known as November) is a charity event held during November each year.

At the start of Movember guys register with a clean shaven face. The Movember participants, known as Mo Bros, then have the remainder of the month to grow and groom their Mo (Australian slang for moustache), raising money and awareness along the way for men’s health and the fight against prostate cancer.

Movember culminates at the end of the month at the Gala Partés. These glamorous and groomed events will see Tom Selleck, Hulk Hogan and Borat look-a-likes battle it out for their chance to take home the prestigious Man of Movember title.

While growing a Mo is left to the guys, Mo Sistas (women who support their guys or just love Mo’s!) form an important part of Movember by recruiting Mo Bros, helping to raise funds and attending the highly anticipated Gala Partés.

But it’s not all fun and games, so why the extreme behavior?

Whichever way we look at it, men are far less healthy than women. The average life expectancy for men is many years less than that of women; seven years less for African American men and five years less for Caucasian men.

The obvious question is why?

Men lack awareness about the very real health issues they face. Many feel they have to be tough – “a real man” – and are reluctant to see a doctor about an illness or to go for regular medical check ups. The aim of Movember is to change these attitudes and make men’s health fun by putting the Mo back on the face of American men while raising some serious funds for the number one men’s health issue, prostate cancer.

Prostate cancer is the most common non-skin cancer in the US with one in six American men developing the disease and more than 28,000 men dying of the disease every year.

Movember is very proud to be teaming with the Prostate Cancer Foundation in the US. All donations made will go directly to the Prostate Cancer Foundation, which will use the funds for high-impact research to find better treatments and a cure for prostate cancer. The Prostate Cancer Foundation is a 501(c)(3) organization. All donations are tax-deductible to the extent permitted by law.

I think this is a fun way to raise awareness and cash! Want to learn more, visit their website! To help our friend Will Hobbs be the most bad ass Mo Bro alive, you can click here to donate to his Mo (remember, top donor will receive Will’s beard, if that is a good thing). Or, you can opt to cut a check (made out to Prostate Cancer Foundation) and mail it to:

Will even provided us with a pre-Movember photo (to be followed by a post-Movember photo)!

NNYPRS Post Investigation Report

Here it is, another actual final report from a real paranormal investigation group! This one is particularly fun because it’s from the Northern New York Paranormal Research Society’s investigation of the Plattsburgh, NY Air Force Base gymnasium. That’s right folks, the same investigation I went with them on, the same one I wrote about just the other day. I thought you guys might enjoy a little compare and contrast, so refresh your memories by reading my write up about the investigation. Then continue on to the NNYPRS final report.

Post-Investigative Report

Client: Plattsburgh Air Force Base, Old Gym, Plattsburgh, NY
Date: 10/11/08
Referred by: Erin Connors, WPTZ Channel 5 News

History: The Gym was built in 1933 and opened in 1934. At the time it was the largest building in all of Plattsburgh. It had two sections, the main gym and a theater. The gym had bleachers and a basketball court upstairs with changing rooms, a weight room and a bowling alley in the basement. The theater section, although attached, technically had a separate entrance. Under the stage, was a holding area for actors and actresses that would get to the stage by a spiral staircase in the back corner of stage left. Sometime in the 1950’s, 2 handball courts were put in where the theater seats were. Then, it is believed that in the 70’s or 80’s 2 more racquetball courts were installed in the rest of the theater’s seating area.

Reported Activity: People claim that the area under the stage was a morgue for mangled body parts at one time. People have claimed to hear banging and screaming coming from this area. Workers have reported hearing many sounds throughout the building when they believed they were alone. Sounds include whistling, conversations, banging, weights clanging, and footsteps. There are two reported visual phenomenon. The first was a report of seeing what was believed to be a soldier walking on the indoor track on the second floor. The other visual report happened in the weight room. A former employee that we spoke to claimed to see a man walk past the weight room in the hallway. He saw this in a mirror. He said later it happened again, the opposite way.

Personal Experiences:
Brian heard what sounded like voices coming through a door, from an office that was unoccupied. However, with the acoustics and other various factors, it is very possible it was not paranormal. Other than this, no other personal experiences occurred.

Debunked:
This building never housed a morgue of any type. We were able to debunk almost every audible report. The acoustics of the building were incredible. Someone can be outside whistling, talking in a normal voice, and it could be heard clearly up on the track and on the basketball court, even with all windows closed. Also, the sounds of voices, heating duct “bangs”, lockers closing, weights slamming from downstairs would all carry extremely well to the main floor area, as well as in the main office. The number of reflective surfaces in the areas where apparitions have been spotted could very easily create an image that, in an old, supposedly haunted building would appear to be ghosts. In the weight room area, the report of looking at the mirror and seeing someone pass in the hallway could very easily be explained by the distortion of the particular mirror, the witness admitting there were people in the room across the hallway, and reflections of other mirrors in that general vicinity.

Initial Conclusion: It is the general consensus of NNYPRS that all stories surrounding this property are of an “urban legend” variety, or the result of the minds ability to perceive a sound to be paranormal when in a large, “spooky”, supposedly haunted building when you are relatively alone. No data was acquired that could be considered paranormal in nature. Only one reliable source could be found that had claimed to experience a paranormal event. NNYPRS was able to find natural explanations to all of his reports. Any other report of activity is of the “friend of a friend” variety, and not able to be substantiated.

Hey folks, if you enjoyed their report, come out to P3 and meet the team! P3 is on Sunday October 26, 2008 from 1-6 p.m. in Plattsburgh, NY. It’s free to attend.

Think Before You Pink!

It’s that time of the year again, where the stores are filled to the brim with pink colored items, when we’re all reminded that we still have no cure for cancer and that many organizations need money to continue with research and assistance. If you’re like me you wonder, does buying a pink can opener really help? Does purchasing a pink ribbon magnet to go on my car do anything besides tell people, “Hey, I bought a pink ribbon for my car?” That said, you can understand why I was thrilled to become acquainted with Breast Cancer Action’s Think Before You Pink campaign.

(text taken from the Think Before You Pink website)

Think Before You Pink, a project of Breast Cancer Action, launched in 2002 in response to the growing concern about the overwhelming number of pink ribbon products and promotions on the market. The campaign calls for more transparency and accountability by companies that take part in breast cancer fundraising, and encourages consumers to ask critical questions about pink ribbon promotions.

Think Before You Pink also highlights “pinkwashers”—companies that purport to care about breast cancer by promoting a pink ribbon campaign, but manufacture products that studies indicate are linked to the disease.

The list of pink ribbon products grows every year. From candy to clothing to automobiles, thousands of companies are pinning pink ribbons on their products in an attempt to boost their image and their profits by connecting themselves to a good cause.

Before you impulsively buy one of these products in the belief that your money is going to do good, Breast Cancer Action urges you to “think before you pink”—and ask these critical questions:

How much money from your purchase actually goes toward breast cancer? Is the amount clearly stated on the package?

Some companies, like Tribeca, offer a pink version of their product but don’t specify how much of your purchase will be donated. Tribeca is selling a pink USB flash drive and the package says that a donation from the sale of the drive will be made to the National Breast Cancer Foundation. What you can’t tell just by looking at the package is how much “part of the proceeds” is.

When the package does state the amount of the donation, is that amount enough? Fox Home Entertainment, for example, is selling “DVDs for the Cure” for $14.95 and donating 50 cents to Susan G. Komen for the Cure. Is this a significant contribution, or a piddly amount? You decide. If you can’t tell how much money is being donated, or if you don’t think it’s enough, give directly to the organization instead.

What is the maximum amount that will be donated?

Many companies place a cap on the amount of money that will be donated. For example, Give Hope Jeans, sold by White House Black Market for $88, will donate “net proceeds” from the sale to the organization Living Beyond Breast Cancer. But they’ve capped their contributions at $200,000. This means that once they’ve reached the $200,000 limit they will stop contributing, no matter how many pairs of jeans are bought.

In some cases, that cap is a generous amount. In some cases it’s not. But you should know that, whenever there is a cap, your individual purchase may not contribute anything to the cause, depending on when you shop and whether the cap has already been met.

How are the funds being raised?

Does making the purchase ensure a contribution to the cause? Or do you, the shopper, have to jump through hoops to make sure the money gets where it’s supposed to go? Lean Cuisine, for example, has a pink ribbon on its boxes of frozen meals, but if you read closely, you’ll find out that the purchase of the meal does not result in any donation to a breast cancer organization. Instead, consumers must visit the Lean Cuisine web site and buy a pink Lean Cuisine lunch tote. Then, $5 of that purchase will be donated to Susan G. Komen for the Cure.

To what breast cancer organization does the money go, and what types of programs does it support?

Does the product’s package tell you where the money goes and what will be done with it? For example, Penn is selling pink tennis balls and the package says that 15 cents of your purchase will go to “a Breast Cancer Research Organization.” It doesn’t tell you which organization or what kind of research will be done. Will the money go to fund the same studies that have been ongoing for decades (which already get enormous financial support)? Or will it go to under funded, innovative research into the causes of breast cancer?

If the donation is going to breast cancer services, is it reaching the people most in need, in the most effective way? The Breast Cancer Site store, for example, donates money to the National Breast Cancer Foundation, which helps pay for mammograms for women who cannot afford them. But mammograms are already covered for low-income women through the National Breast and Cervical Cancer Screening Program. Although this screening program does have limitations, what is most needed is the funding to get low-income women treatment if breast cancer is found.

What is the company doing to assure that its products are not actually contributing to the breast cancer epidemic?

Many companies that raise funds for breast cancer also make products that are linked to the disease. BCA calls these companies “pinkwashers.” BMW, for example, gives $1 to Susan G. Komen for the Cure each time you test-drive one of their cars, even though pollutants found in car exhaust are linked to breast cancer. Many cosmetics companies whose products contain chemicals linked to breast cancer also sell their items for the cause. Pinkwashers would make a much more valuable contribution to women’s lives if they made safer products, instead of wrapping themselves in the pink ribbon.

Contribute to a Cause, Not Cause-Marketers

Some of these answers will be easy to find, some won’t be. But you’re entitled to know, and the companies marketing these products should provide this information.

You might not always be able to make an informed decision while you’re standing in the store. Make the best choice you can with the information you have. If you have trouble getting answers or if you feel that a promotion is questionable, write to the company responsible, consider buying a different product, and tell your friends about Think Before You Pink.

The Guild presents alchemy conferences, including the annual International Alchemy Cofnerence in Las Vegas ( www.AlchemyConference.com ), other regional conferences, workshops, and tours around the world. The Guild disseminates free information about alchemy to researchers and the media, and publishes the free ezine, the Alchemy Journal. The Guild oversees the release of alchemical research to the general public and maintains an online Archives of original alchemy texts and modern research that contains nearly 25 gigabytes of information and is the largest library of its kind.

Membership is open to the general public, however, new members without previous work in alchemy are placed on a one year probation and their use of the Archives and participation in discussion groups is monitored. Complete information on the Guild membership policies is at www.AlchemyGuild.org .

The original Alchemy Guild was formed by a confederation of practicing alchemists from Germany, Austria, and Czechoslovakia who trace their lineage back to a unique association of freethinking scholars who welcomed both spiritual and practical alchemists, as well as any of their fellow craftsmen who had been outcast or persecuted by political or Church authorities. This enlightened association was founded by a Renaissance nobleman and practicing alchemist named Wilhelm von Rosenberg, who founded the original “Alchymie Cech” (or Alchimie Gilde”) in 1576 in a small town midway between Prague and Vienna. Today, the International Alchemy Guild (IAG) carries on von Rosenberg’s work on an international scale with members in 23 countries.

Our founder, Wilhelm von Rosenberg, was born on March 10, 1535, in Schützendorf Castle in Austria. His parents ranked among the most powerful and influential people in the Austro-Hungarian Empire and held castles and properties throughout the north central section the realm. Wilhelm, their oldest son, was educated at a private school in Bohemia and spent the years from 1544 to 1550 at a bishopric college in Passau. After finishing his studies, he went to Vienna and was welcomed into the court of emperor Ferdinand I von Habsburg. Later, when Rudolf II took power, Wilhelm became a diplomat in his court. He would also become the highest royal officer in Prague in the service of emperor Maxmilian II.

But his aristocratic background and diplomatic service were not what distinguished Wilhelm from his fellow noblemen. What made this man remarkable was his relentless passion for deeper truths and the rebirth of knowledge that was taking place in Europe at the time. At the age of sixteen (1551), Wilhelm took control of the Rosenberg estate and moved into one of the family’s castles in the small town of Cesky Krumlov. He immediately ordered the castle renovated into the Renaissance style with many hermetic symbols included in the design. Before construction even began, however, he set out on a pilgrimage to Italy, seat of the new Renaissance culture. When he returned to his home the following year, he was seething with new ideas from the artists, alchemists, philosophers, and politicians he met there.

One of Wilhelm’s lifelong goals was to have a large family, and when he was secure in his power and settled into a magnificent home, he sought a bride. At the age of 22 (1557), he married Katherine of Brunschwig. She became pregnant two years later but died giving birth to a premature child, who also died in a few days. Afterwards, Wilhelm set out on another one of his spiritual journeys, this time visiting leaders of Renaissance thought in Germany. Then, in Berlin in 1561, he met and married Sophie von Branibor, who returned to Cesky Krumlov with him. Unfortunately, she became sick and died three years later before having any children. It would seem that Wilhelm’s efforts to start a family were doomed from the beginning. Yet for some reason, even as a child, he felt it extremely important to have a large family. As it turned out, his premonition would prove correct and have deeper repercussions that even he could have foreseen.

In 1566, Wilhelm decided to leave his home and accepted a commission to lead Czech troops against Turkish armies, which had been invading Hungary for nearly a hundred years. Wilhelm was gaining considerable respect for his bravery and honesty in the Hapsburg court, and in 1572, was appointed to lead negotiations over the Polish throne. He was so admired by Polish noblemen that he was himself nominated as a candidate for the throne. His lifelong diplomatic work was recognized in 1585, when Wilhelm was awarded the Order of the Golden Fleece (the highest imperial honor for noblemen) by King Philip II of Spain.

In 1578, Wilhelm married once again, but this time he was deeply in love and was sure his new bride would provide him with a child. In a lavish ceremony that lasted for several days, he wed Anna Marie von Baden at his castle in Cesky Krumlov. According to records found in the castle, his guests consumed 40 stags, 150 oxen, 546 calves, 654 pigs, 450 rams, 20 other large game, 30 large grouses, 2,050 partridges, 5,135 geese, 3,166 chickens, 18,000 carps, 10,209 pikes, 312,000 crabs, and 30,000 eggs.

But once again, Wilhelm’s bride died (1585) before she could present him with an heir. Wilhelm interred her corpse in St. Vitus Church in Cesky Krumlov in a crypt next to where he would himself be buried. Finally in 1587, a desperate Wilhelm married Polyxena von Pernstein. Tragically, she was unable to bear him any children. Despite his lifelong desire for a family, all four of his marriages were childless, and he had no direct descendents. When Wilhelm von Rosenberg died on August 31,1592, the family’s dominion passed over to his brother, Peter Wok von Rosenberg. The effects on the Alchemy Guild would be devastating.

As part of his passion for the Renaissance, Wilhelm von Rosenberg invited alchemists from throughout Europe to his castles in Cesky Krumlov, Trebon, Prachatice, and his palace in Prague. Hundreds of alchemists ended up working in Prague under the patronage of Emperor Rudolf II, and the city would remain the center of European alchemy for another two hundred years.

Wilhelm wanted to make his city of Cesky Krumlov a center for alchemical research, not only a home to practical alchemists who focused primarily on making metals and elixirs. He encouraged free thought and accepted alchemists who had been shunned by Rudolf II. Before long, Cesky Krumlov became known as an alternative hermetic haven, the “the Bohemian Mecca of alchemists.”

When Wilhelm was just 18 years old, he had met an outspoken physician and alchemist by the name of Tadeas Hajek (1525-1600). Hajek prepared a one-year astrological forecast for Wilhelm that proved astonishingly accurate, and they became good friends. Hajek accompanied Wilhelm during his campaign against the Turks and returned with him to Cesky Krumlov. Hajek planted new species of flowers and herbs and supervised the layout of Wilhelm’s gardens. He also continued his astrological research and, in 1580, published an influential book called A Treatise of Comets and Celestial Signs. Because of his honesty and extensive knowledge of the natural sciences, Hajek helped evaluate the work and results of the many alchemists who came to Cesky Krumlov.

The alchemist who practiced the longest in Cesky Krumlov was Anton Michael von Ebbersbach. A sample from his writings is shown at right. He joined Wilhelm in 1565. Anton is said to have been successful at producing gold and lived a lavish lifestyle in his mansion out of town near Kajovska. He claimed to have discovered a Water of Multiplication, which when used to water seeds of gold coins planted in the ground would cause them to multiply and grow. He also produced a variety of wonderful tinctures and elixirs. In 1587, he created his famous elixir “Conservationem Senectutis,” which was said to significantly slow down the aging process.

In recognition of his work, Wilhelm appointed Anton Michael director of the gardens in which the alchemists’ spagyric herbs and plants were grown. He was also made administrator of mines, from which metal ores were supplied to the alchemists. Finally, Anton was asked to help direct and organize the activities and research of the diverse alchemists in Cesky Krumlov. In 1576, he began holding meetings of alchemists that evolved into the first guild, known as the “Alchymie Cech” (or “Alchimie Gilde”). These early meetings were probably held at the castle in what is now known as Renaissance Room 3, which adjoins Wilhelm’s private chambers.

In 1588, as the discussions became more informal and lab oriented, it is thought they were moved to a large building bought by Anton for that purpose. The imposing red structure still stands at 77 Siroka Street in Cesky Krumlov. Today, it houses a café and a few small shops. The structure dates from the fourteenth century, but when Anton bought it, he made extensive renovations. He constructed a large meeting hall with a dramatic vaulted ceiling on the first floor and added an elaborate granite entrance portal in the middle of the building with many hermetic and alchemical symbols. As word spread of the alchemist conclave in Cesky Krumlov, many alchemists – both obscure and famous – moved to the city and set up laboratories or work on manuscripts.

Besides Tadeus Hajek, there was another physician-alchemist in Wilhelm’s court by the name of Vaclav Lavin. Lavin took his alchemical apprenticeship in France and was known for a remarkable “tincture of transformation” he developed, although his original formula has never been discovered. It is believed, however, that he never worked with the metals. One of the most influential alchemists in Cesky Krumlov was Bavor Rodovsky. His grandfather, Bavor the Senior, was a wizard who had transmuted metals into gold on several occasions. He passed his alchemical knowledge on to his grandson, who never attended a university but demonstrated extensive knowledge of alchemy, astronomy, and mathematics, as well as history and philosophy.

Bavor had set up a laboratory in Nechanic, but his alchemical work proved so expensive that he was imprisoned for debts in the Black Tower of Prague. Bavor appealed to Wilhelm to imprison him in Cesky Krumlov and allow him to pursue theoretical alchemy in his cell. In exchange, Bavor offered Wilhelm a translation of the rare manuscript Secreta Aristotelis (“Secrets of Aristotle”). In 1575, Wilhelm bought the book, which helped pay off some of Bavor’s debts and freed him from prison. Wilhelm then paid Bavor to work as an alchemist in Cesky Krumlov.

Even before Bavor had set up his lab, he had tried to persuade the great alchemist Theophrastus Paracelsus to join them in Cesky Krumlov or at least share some of his ideas with them. Although Bavor’s efforts to sign up the fiercely independent alchemist were unsuccessful, Paracelsus did visit the city on several occasions and probably attended a few Guild meetings.

However, other famous alchemists actually lived at Cesky Krumlov year round. The renowned Italian alchemist Claudius Syrrus came to work in the city under a formal contract with Wilhelm. The actual document reads in part: “The alchemist reserves the right to be spiritually and physically free and independent, and makes it a condition not to be disturbed by anybody, with the personal exception of Wilhelm von Rosenberg. Should the occasion arise that the Philosophical Stone is actually produced, it is arranged that Claudius Syrrus receives a half share of it.”

English alchemist and mathematician Dr. John Dee (shown at right) and alchemist-conjurer Edward Kelley spent several years in the Guild environs. They came to Bohemia in 1584, and Wilhelm made arrangements for them to stay with Tadeus Hajek in Prague. He gave them access to his laboratories and also introduced them to Rudolf II. John Dee carried out a transmutation of mercury into gold in front of Rudolf II, then offered Rudolf his crystal ball and a magical scrying mirror made of anthracite. However in June of 1586, there were accusations that the men were spying for England. Out of fear of being arrested by Rudolf II, both men left the country. When Wilhelm von Rosenberg heard of their plight, he offered them asylum in his south Bohemian dominion. John Dee and his family found a house in Trebon in September 1586. Dee loved the city and visited Cesky Krumlov frequently. He enjoyed his refuge so much that he named his son, born there in February 1586, Theodorus Trebonianus (Theodorus of Trebon). Edward Kelly also settled in Trebon and spent considerable time working in Cesky Krumlov.

John Dee left Trebon to return to England in March 1589, and Edward Kelley returned to Prague to work in the laboratories of Emperor Rudolf II. Eventually, Rudolf had him imprisoned, but the artful Kelley tried to escape twice. On the first attempt, he killed a guard. On the second attempt, he fell from a wall and died of his injuries. Dee returned to England to find his house and library ransacked by Christian mobs. He lost many precious manuscripts, which he insisted contained the secret of his transformations. That must have been true, for he and his family lived in abject poverty afterwards. Finally, he sought and received a small stipend from Queen Elizabeth on which to survive. Undoubtedly, both men would have been much better off staying in Cesky Krumlov.

Linhart Wichperger von Erbach was another famous alchemist who joined Wilhelm’s group of alchemists in 1566. There was also Jaros Griemiller, who practiced alchemy in the service of Wilhelm in the 1570s. Jaros had studied hermetic philosophy and was an adept at both practical and spiritual alchemy. In 1578, while working in Cesky Krumlov, he completed his most important book. Dedicated to Wilhelm von Rosenberg, Jaros’ illuminated manuscript became one of the fundamental Renaissance texts on alchemy. He called it the Rosarium Philosophorum (Rosary of the Philosophers), and it contains a description of the preparation of the Stone of Sages.

Another important alchemist at Cesky Krumlov was Jakub Horcicky Tepence, who was known by his Latin name Sinapius. He was born in 1575 in Cesky Krumlov and attended the Jesuit College founded there by Wilhelm von Rosenberg. Horcicky learned alchemical laboratory procedures from local pharmacist Martin Schafner and went on to study logic and physics at Prague University from 1598 to 1600. Influenced greatly by Paracelsus, Horcicky focused his work on making medicines from plants and took on a number of jobs in botanical gardens to learn more about herbs. During his work in the Jesuit garden in Prague, he grew medicinal plants from which he distilled different therapeutic tinctures, ointments, and so-called “theriacs” or tonic remedies. These medicaments were very popular and were known as “Horcicky Waters”. His tonics even cured Emperor Rudolf II of a disorder that other doctors were unable to remedy. Horcicky was then named the Emperor’s personal physician and the Chief Distillator of the Emperor’s Castle Laboratories. In 1608, Horcicky was granted knighthood with the right to use a coat-of-arms, which he designed containing many alchemical symbols. After the death of Rudolf II., Horcicky spent the last years of his life in seclusion in Prague’s Klementinum, where he died in 1622.

Another alchemist who practiced in Wilhelm’s enlightened circle was engineer-alchemist Jakub Krcin von Jelcany, who designed the pond and lake system in south Bohemia. He kept a separate laboratory near the town of Krepenice. Wilhelm’s brother, Peter Wok von Rosenberg (shown at right), was also an alchemist and wrote an important text on the art of distillation. There are no surviving records of the Guild or of how many members it enlisted, but it has been estimated that over a hundred alchemists were at one time or another associated with Wilhelm’s south Bohemian group.

In July 1592, Wilhelm von Rosenberg became deathly ill. His lead alchemist, Anton Michael, locked himself in his laboratory to try to make the fabled “Aurum Potabile” (an elixir of life force that restored youth and vitality) to save his dear friend. Within a fortnight, he wrote to Wilhelm announcing, “I already possesses the remedy and have it in my hands, and his Lordship may have it at any time.” But it was too late, and Wilhelm died a few weeks later on August 31.

Because Wilhelm had no children, his brother (Peter Wok von Rosenberg, shown at right) immediately took over control of the family’s lands. Peter was a reckless and unwise ruler who lost the family possessions and was forced to sell Krumlov Castle to Rudolf II just eight years after he took over. Always suspicious of other alchemists and jealous of the Guild’s power, Peter immediately set out to break apart what Wilhelm had so lovingly created. Within days of Wilhelm’s death, he confiscated Anton Michael’s lab, manuscripts, and other possessions and gave the Guild meeting hall at 77 Siroka Street to his personal secretary. Anton was imprisoned in a cell near the first gate of Cesky Krulov Castle and died there less than a year later on May 15, 1593.

Anton Michael von Ebbersbach, first “president” of the Alchemy Guild, was buried with all the honors of a nobleman in the Minorite Monastery in Cesky Krumlov, and his tombstone can be seen in the wall of the Cross Gallery there. However, it is said that Anton Michael’s spirit can still be felt in Cesky Krumlov. Yet his ghost does not haunt the castle cell where he died nor the fabulous manor house he loved so dearly. Anton Michael has returned to the old Guild hall at 77 Siroka Street. Many stories have been told of hearing his footsteps on the stairway or hearing his sighs and mumbled words echoing through the deserted hall. A few have even seen his apparition standing in front of the wooden doors on the Guild portal, gazing out into the street, as if waiting for a meeting to begin.

The keyword to this group would probably be “networking”, as that is what and how we have previously worked. Many positive projects and ventures have manifested in the past, and we look forward to a new era of joint ventures and coming together for the greater good. Our final words on this would probably be, “Welcome to Prance the Witches Path!!!. Forever in the service of the Lord and the Lady. In love and Light.”

Profile: The Sabbat

The Sabbat was brought into being because we feel that as practitioners of traditional Witchcraft have very few places to study and develop our Power. We enjoy and cherish spiritual and cultural diversity, however we feel that the older ways of Witchcraft have been shoved under the rug and ignored in favor of newer, untested, and in some cases very dangerous beliefs – we are not creating yet another elitist group, we simply want to resurrect the no nonsense path of Witchcraft that we fell in love with. We are fascinated with pre-historic religious expression, our greatest love is Witchcraft and for most of The Sabbat it is our first and only true love. We celebrate the Dark and the Light, we see both as vital to the survival of all things. We enjoy learning from each other and refuse to deny our beliefs, which, in a sense, feels like a broom closet within the broom closet – it’s sad that we feel afraid to speak our minds in a community that cherishes an open spirit – we want to be recognized for who and what we wish to accomplish: a conclave of individuals who seek to study and master the art of Witchcraft.
