Moonlight Tarot’s Question Corner: Mystical Answers to Mundane Inquiries

By Angela Kaufman, Moonlight Tarot LLC

The dark evenings of October set the tone for reflection and preparation for the winter months to come. This month’s Querent, a young man we will call Jacob, has reason to reflect as it is also the month that will mark his 28th birthday. He is looking to the Tarot this month for general guidance. The birthday is a celebration of the solar return- the passage from youth to maturity, and the development of one’s identity through the lifespan. Jacob’s birthday is of special significance to astrologers as well- for it is the time of his Saturn Return- the date when Saturn returns to its position in the Natal Chart- typically falling in the 28-30th year of life. This is a special milestone in maturity as it is associated with challenges that mark the delineation between youth and adulthood, illusion and truth, carelessness and responsibility. Saturn is also the marker of time and maturity- and Jacob’s timing couldn’t be better!

For Jacob this will be a time of change, truth and challenges. A rewarding but testing journey awaits, and Jacob will be called upon this year to separate the illusions of youth from the wisdom of maturity. This is a time to clean out the closets- both internally and externally- to sort how things are from the fantasy of how we wish they would be. Tests require examining attitudes, and behavior patterns from earlier in youth which are beginning to take their natural toll. Recall that much is forgiven in youth that is not accepted in adulthood- when the puppy chews our best sneakers it is easy to smile and shrug it off, but the same act is harder to tolerate when carried out by a grown dog who can no longer draw on the “cute and innocent” factor to avoid consequences. This is this type of growth spurt Jacob will be facing in the coming year.

The first card is a leaper, emerging from the deck spontaneously during the shuffling process, and it is the Ace of Swords. This will be a dynamic year. A year of new beginnings no longer lingering in the abstract world of thought and fantasy- but culminating in action. Changes will be made, not just talked about. This will be a time for Jacob to jump in with both feet, to overcome procrastination and passive acceptance of what he does not find tolerable in his life. This is the time for Jacob to put his ideas into action, to challenge himself to change, assertively, that which is no longer serving his best potential. Success and accomplishment can be achieved but only by making some changes to Jacob’s routines, to get different results he must take different actions. He will be more likely to summon the courage to follow his heart this year, rather than holding back or giving in to insecurities or doubts. This is a powerful time to effect change- so take hold and accept opportunities as they arise. Like the sword itself, Jacob may find it necessary to make certain “cuts” in his lifestyle this year- cutting out sources of negativity, people or activities that stand in the way of his goals or drain his energy, unhelpful doubts or insecurities, and most importantly, cutting out excess baggage by honestly confronting lessons from the past. Willingness to accept that new beginnings are on the horizon will be crucial to breaking negative cycles and patterns that have become routine.

As if to echo this message, the first official card in the spread is the 10 of Swords. This is the final of the Swords suit before coming to the Court cards- thus it shows finality, closure and endings. Jacob will find that unhelpful and self-sabotaging behaviors will reach their natural conclusion- events will transpire in such a way that Jacob will have to confront bad habits and unfulfilling patterns in relationships and work, and lifestyle at large. At best, Jacob will find relief and an opportunity to take advantage of new opportunities and more mature priorities. Lifestyle changes that promote release of toxic, negative, and self-defeating routines all in preparation for new growth will begin to surface. Exits sought will be found. At worst, even resistance to change will prove futile as circumstances will unfold that make it more difficult to maintain the status quo. The culmination of stress and burdens carried in the past will weigh on Jacob until he is prepared to accept that things must change. Accepting responsibility and going with new opportunities, taking initiative and acting for his own good rather than against it, will prove an easier way to harness the energy of change. Fighting this current will only prove draining. Like a swimmer caught in a riptide, the best thing for Jacob to do at this time is face the music and roll with, not against, the current. In particular, aspects of life that included impulsivity, over-extending himself, excessive work or exercise, or risky behavior, will begin to catch up to Jacob in new ways if these issues are not addressed. Fatigue, burn out, resentment toward others, or even physical health issues or accident prone-ness are possible if things continue as they are. Jacob is entering a phase in his life where habits and choices once perceived as harmless will begin to have an impact. Be it smoking or poor eating habits, overworking or partying too hard, this is a crucial time for Jacob to act on resolutions to break destructive cycles before they catch up to him in ways that they had not previously.

To give greater emphasis to the above message, the Powers that Be have slapped on a big, glaring neon sign- lest we not quite get the picture. They do this through the Tower card. The Tower is considered the archetype of cataclysmic change. Some see only doom and gloom when reflecting on this energy, but that is like looking at school as an annoyance between summer vacations. Jacob can awaken to the energy of this card and ready himself to accept the intervention of powers greater than his conscious planning on his behalf providing just the wake-up call he needs in order to find closure where it is needed and strive for better. Imagine that a comfortable, well-rehearsed routine has become both a source of security as well as monotony and self-limitation. Sound familiar? We all have these experiences, sometimes several times at once or throughout the lifespan. Luckily we also live in a universe where things don’t always go as planned, and we don’t always get our way. When circumstances beyond our conscious control result in large scale disruptions to our cozy plans, it is easy to become upset, angry, disappointed, defeated, or feel abandoned by the Spiritual Force we once thanked when things were going our way. This is the lesson of the Tower card. So, Jacob will have the good fortune of not getting his way, of being disappointed, of realizing aspects of his plans are not sustainable. The fortune of seeing his circumstances as they are- warts and all- so that he may embrace the opportunity to rebuild. Yes, the Universe is about to kick over your sand castle, Jake, but it is because you need to understand that…well…castles made of sand melt in the sea, eventually, as Jimi Hendrix once said. What can Jacob do in light of this? Just be open minded, be cautious, be willing to accept the tides of change, and begin to see that although beautiful or special, a sand castle is not the deluxe dream house it may have passed for at one time. Begin to recognize that the beach is vast, and when one sandcastle collapses it can be a great opportunity to jump back in the water, ride the waves, move on down the shore, visit the boardwalk, make another sandcastle, or fly a kite instead. This is not the time to put all your hopes and dreams into a castle of sand, or in any one thing or object for that matter- begin to explore impermanence, make peace with powerlessness, and don’t count on things or people to provide your foundation, or to define who you are. It is also not productive to curse the wind, waves or seagulls because the sandcastle doesn’t last forever. Instead recognize the bounty that does exist in whatever landscape you find yourself and create something new.

The final card in the reading is another Major Arcana card, Temperance. Like the movement, this card suggests self-discipline, patience, balance and avoidance of excess. Jacob would do well to examine where he has fallen into extremism or risky routines or behaviors. If favorite indulgences are giving way to consequences- take note, this is not the time for extremes in work, play, or partying. This is the time to moderate, modify, collaborate with others- that’s right- be open to receiving as well as giving, and have patience. This is an extremely creative time for Jacob but it will not be a time of instant gratification and instant results.

The security of the ego is about to be challenged, but in this process the potential for creativity, development of crucial networks and supports, and the expression of long held internal talents are emerging. This is a process not to be rushed, so Jacob will have to curb some of his expectations. Have a happy birthday and Saturn’s return bring a new lens to see the potential that awaits.

Onwards to Fall!

Super-Natural Super-Geeky Home Renovation
This place is part home improvement story, part Druid-inspired decoration scheme, and two parts Crazy Town. This guy is taking his perfectly normal suburban English house and recreating various arcane locations from around the world, including tying each room to a specific element. There’s the Voodoo Kitchen, based on a place from the 1950’s New Orleans; The Watchtower, from a Welsh castle; The Boathouse, the nautical-themed bathroom taken from a Norwegian lighthouse; and the Japanese / Art Deco fusion scifi-like “conservatory”. Yes, there are pictures.

6 Abandoned Places Ready-Made as Supervillain Lairs
Here’s some photos and cheeky commentary on six abandoned places that would (or already have) make great supervillain lairs.

The Age of All Buildings in NYC at a Glance
So some guys took publicly available data on a million buildings in New York City and made it into a color map, coded by age. Now combine that with Google Maps and Street View, and you can scout out the really old buildings in NYC with a little time and a computer.

Newspapers Still Being Published
The oldest are also, apparently, the best. Each of these is the oldest and still in active daily (or at least weekly) print.

See the Post-Apocolypse Now!
So yeah, another fun Cracked article with photos. This time it’s places that look like the apocalypse has already come and gone. Creepy and abandoned!

Maker Faire Photos
Some photos and ideas from the great Maker Faire — a conference of folks who may resemble mad scientists, if you squint.

Unsettling Disney Easter-eggs
Yup, you read that right — bizarre and fun secrets of Walt Disney World. There’s the secret club, the secret underground tunnels (which practically everyone has heard about by now and they even give tours), and smell-based mind control.

Helping Opportunity Knock

By Lisa McCue Janusz and Carole Hyder

We all want opportunity to “knock”, particularly when it comes to our professional lives. Whether we’re looking for a new job, seeking a promotion, or just want to breathe some enthusiasm into our day-to-day routine, new opportunities provide a welcome fresh perspective.

Some people seem to attract opportunities more easily than others. You might wonder how you can do the same. The answer lies in a basic principle of Feng Shui: your space reflects your life.

As Feng Shui consultants we’ve seen clients working at cluttered desks, sitting in moldy unfinished basements or even scraping around on old office chairs missing a roller or two. Many valuable hours are spent working in these less-than-desirable environments. Is that supportive? Motivating?

Here are some excellent Feng Shui tips to attract new opportunities into your own life:

• Be sure to invite opportunities by using your front door, even if you have an attached garage. This helps get energy moving. Try to use it at least a couple of times a week. For added effect, try entering and exiting your home through your front door nine days in a row.

• Make sure your house greets your visitors, as well as opportunities. Create a welcoming front path and a noticeable front door. Make sure your doorbell works and that your house numbers are easily seen.

• Your office should reflect your professional goals. Get a solid desk and a chair with a high back to support you.

• Make sure your office reflects your goals and desired career destination. A person on a corporate executive path will have a more traditional office, while an interior designer will likely include more creativity and flair in their space.

• Think of two or three well-known people in your industry. Search out or imagine what their offices might look like. (Pinterest is great for this kind of thing!) Then add a few elements from their environment into yours.

Whatever you do, never underestimate the power of your surroundings. We all know it just feels different to sit in a leather executive chair at a nice wood desk versus a folding chair and card table. It changes your attitude, your outlook and the kind of opportunities you attract!

Moonlight Tarot’s Question Corner: Mystical Answers to Mundane Inquiries

By Angela Kaufman, Moonlight Tarot LLC

September harkens the transition from summer to fall and many reflect on the harvest of their labor at this time. This months’ Querent is troubled by the fear that her harvest will be meager this year as a career transition has resulted in earnings that fall short of past expectations. Her dilemma is expressed through her question; “what is my financial outlook and what can I do to make the most of what I have during this time?” An interesting question indeed as Tarot can provide insight into situations and patterns the Querent can be aware of or take advantage of, and yet it must be emphasized that these services are no substitution for financial advisement. Likewise Tarot pinpoints matters of spiritual nature so while there are ways to indicate gains, losses and general advice it should be noted there is no card that will distinguish “Money Market Accounts” from “Stock Market” or “Pay off the Credit Card”….perhaps this would make for an interesting oracle if any of the readership chooses to create a deck solely focused on financial matters….(not a bad idea come to think of it!) For the time being, this month’s Querent who we will call Judy will be guided in terms of what she needs to know to navigate her financial needs on a limited income.

The Ace of Hearts, aka The Leaper

Three cards are drawn as usual- and this reading also yields a Leaper- an additional card whose kamikaze flight from the deck during shuffling indicates the cards are ready to tell their tale. The Leaper for Judy is the Ace of Hearts. A hopeful sign, as this card indicates happiness and brings a feeling of blessing and hope to Judy’s situation. While it is not an indicator of work or money specifically it connotes that Judy’s situation has a happy ending.

The Six of Hearts is the first card of Judy’s reading. It connotes a pleasant and hopeful resolution to Judy’s problem based on the help or assistance of someone from Judy’s past- either a childhood friend or a past resource or outlet that has not been acknowledged or realized yet. Judy should remain receptive to the advice of a trusted friend, someone who will help Judy connect to solutions and resources that have otherwise not been considered. It also suggests financial growth and security with the guidance and assistance of a significant other whose income contributes to financial stability. In terms of protecting current assets it may be prudent at this time for Judy to review all accounts and assets, including some held from childhood or from earlier in life- a key seems to be finding a solution in the past, attaining security through tapping a resource from Judy’s heritage, family or past. The number six may be significant as well- increments of 600 or 6,000 dollars. Judy would do well to blend her plans with those of a significant other or trusted friend- being open to feedback but also maintaining her original plans- this solution seems to be a blend of her objectives with the suggestions from this person from her past. One thing seems indicated in this reading- it does not appear Judy will face a loss. It appears likely her finances will grow and remain protected through her initiative and the guidance of another- it does not seem likely she will face unforeseen catastrophe that would threaten her current savings.

The center card is the Knave of Bells, and this is in fact the only of these three (plus Leaper, making four) cards that directly connotes finances and work. It suggests new opportunities for growth and guidance from a young person who is business or money minded. This does not suggest staggering growth, rather it suggests early groundwork being laid for financial development at a slow and steady pace. Regardless it is not suggesting loss or retraction of savings, while earning potential may have slowed it seems stability and security are not going to be an issue. There does not seem to be need to panic. It is likely that Judy will be assisted by the advice of a person who is in training or early in their career- with sound business perspective and an ability to be flexible, open, creative, but also with a firm grasp of financial matters. It is also likely that a business proposal brought to Judy’s attention can assist her in establishing a new income source, a secondary stream of income in its early development.

The final card in this reading is the Three of Hearts, another card depicting emotional satisfaction. It seems that expansion of Judy’s current financial foundation will likely arise through collaboration with others especially through three channels- three investments, three opportunities to generate income. It also is highly likely that celebrations, friends, and family will assist in generating this income- work in entertainment, family or party events, income gained through family donations or celebratory gifts. These seem to be positive, growth based opportunities, not tragedies such as inheritances or lawsuits. Most importantly the common message through all these cards is that of expansion, success, and happiness, not of loss, hardship or financial turmoil. Through careful consideration and openness to the views of those around her, Judy will be given opportunities to make what she has last as well as to generate new sources of financial growth at a slow and steady rate. She will not likely have to contend with catastrophic losses or continued financial or even emotional downfalls at this time.

Best of luck to Judy in all of her endeavors and remember that regardless of where you are reading this article all readings are for entertainment purposes in accordance with NYS law.

Geek Month in Review: August 2013

By JB Sanders

Isn’t it supposed to be mega-hot?

Ancient Underground Structures
Come for the bunkers built 2,800 years ago, stay for the sexist architecture.

What You Got There is a Category 5 Language. Yup.
The Foreign Service Institute (whatever the heck that is) has developed a list of languages, and rated them in how difficult they are for an English speaker to learn.

Toilet Tech Vulnerability
Because, really, you want the technology in your toilet to have a “vulnerability”. Maybe we should just skip having “technology” as part of your toilet in the first place. I just can’t stop snorting at this story.

Famous Guns
From all sorts of things: James Bond’s silenced pistol, Dr. Morbius’ ray gun (Forbidden Planet), a Star Trek old series phaser, and the list goes on.

Mars Rover, Huh? What’s the Blue Book On That?
Seriously, here’s an article discussing how to calculate the current “blue book” value of the Mars Rover. It has had a little wear-and-tear.

Bus Charges While It Drives
Build a special roadway, put the right equipment in your bus, and it never has to stop to charge. Pretty neat.

500 New Fairy Tales
Unearthed in an archive in Germany, 500 tales unheard for over 150 years. This feels like a Fables major story line.

Lighting a Million Homes
Guy invents an extremely easy and cheap way to spread light inside homes during the day. And millions of people use the idea.

New York City’s Secret Subway Station
Ok, more like abandoned but still amazingly cool looking. As a bonus, graffiti artists have discovered it and put up some impressive murals.

Timeline of Slang for Your Naughty Bits
Ever wonder how various adult slang developed over time and what people were using to swear in 1910? Wonder no more! Tip: be sure to click the – sign a few times to get a better overview, and slide to the right. (Link is to the Lady Bits version, but there’s also a Men’s Bits page, too.)

How Big is Wikipedia?
If you printed all the articles in Wikipedia (English), how many encyclopedia volumes would that make? About 2000. There’s a live-updating page to calculate it.

The Meaning of Life

By Brad Warner

In Zen we often say there is no meaning of life. When people first hear that, they think it sounds depressing. It sounds as if we’re saying that life is meaningless. But we’re not. We’re saying that any meaning you assign to life is, by necessity, incomplete. It cannot be otherwise. Trying to assign a meaning to life is like trying to stuff the whole ocean into a bucket.

But you can also say there is a meaning of life. It’s another one of those contradictions.

There isn’t a meaning of life in terms you could express as “Life means X, Y, and Z.” Yet meaning and life are intimately intertwined. Nishijima Roshi often said that there are two aspects of life, matter and meaning. These two aspects, he said, are manifestations of the same thing. It’s a different way of saying, “Form is emptiness and emptiness is form.”

Matter is matter. It’s books and tables and birds and 1962 Fender Jazz Bass guitars and so on. Meaning is that other, more nebulous side of life that can’t really be quantified. We experience meaning, so we know it’s real, even if we can’t weigh or measure it.

But what about when bad things happen to good people? If there really were a meaning of life and if there really was a God, surely my mother would have been spared the suffering she endured. If there really were a God there would be no war, disease, poverty, lousy boy bands, or crappy movies with all-star casts. How can there be any meaning to life if shit like that exists?

I get that. But the God I believe in doesn’t perform miracles. (More on that in a later chapter.) And the God I believe in isn’t just good, if good is just that which stands in contrast to evil. Joshu Sasaki Roshi, the Japanese Rinzai Zen teacher whom I quoted in the title of this book, said, “You are educated all your life to venerate God and reject evil. Zen education is totally different: it teaches you how to swallow God and the devil at once.”

When we talk about bad things happening to good people, using the word God can be problematic, as it can be in general. We tend to think of God as an independent agent who can work magic and fix bad situations. We have a long history of thanking God for things we like and cursing the devil for things we hate.

Many modern, rational people generally don’t believe in that kind of God. I certainly don’t. But we don’t need to leap to the conclusion that just because there isn’t a giant Santa Claus figure sitting on a throne up in heaven, therefore there is no meaning to life and there is no God.

The life we are leading right now is a manifestation of God. That we are alive is all the evidence we need to prove that God exists. I don’t mean that we need to postulate the existence of God to explain the fact that we’re here. I’m not talking about God as the first cause of everything. I’m saying that our direct experience of life is God. Life is God experiencing God, just as Dogen said when he said we are the eyes and ears “it” uses to experience itself.

As for annihilation, it is one of the crucial aspects of life that makes it what it is. It’s a cliché to say that we love our lives more because we know we’re going to lose them. But it’s not just that we will lose our lives at some undefined time in the future. We lose our lives every second of every day. The nature of the present moment is change, is annihilation.

It’s trendy these days to talk about “the now” and to celebrate the present moment. And that’s fine. It’s a good trend. But people often forget that the nature of the present moment is the total annihilation of what has gone before. The present moment is highly destructive as well as creative. This is why many of us fear it so much. The present moment is killing us!

But even this is a beautiful thing. The destructive power of the now, of God, is its way of creating us anew at every moment so that we can be here to enjoy its amazingness.

The Geek Handbook and The Unofficial Hobbit Handbook

By JB Sanders

Reviewing these two books together is kind of fun. Although their covers would lead you to believe two very different things about them, they’re actually quite similar.

The Unofficial Hobbit Handbook purports to be a humor/trivia book, though it veers quietly towards a kind of hobbit-ish self-help book. The Geek Handbook, on the other hand, is very upfront about being a self-help book, but is also chock-full of great quotes and trivia about a wide variety of geek culture tidbits.

Together the books are a lot of fun.

My take away? Embrace being a geek, and setup your home like a Hobbit.*

The Unofficial Hobbit Handbook
Let’s start with what I feel is the weaker of the two: the Hobbit Handbook. It’s pretty fun, don’t get me wrong, but as either a humor/trivia book or a subtle self-help book, it feels a bit flat. The book includes an exhaustive discussion of the ways of Hobbits, and includes some amusing trivia. For example, just about every riddle from the books (including the Hobbit, of course) is reproduced, and a bunch more besides.

There’s a lot, I mean a LOT, of detail on food. As you’d expect. There are even some recipes, both humorous (Lembas pie crust! Savory garlic dragon!) and straight up (e.g. Waybread Blueberry Tart). There’s extensive advice on what to keep in the larder, and what to serve at every meal. Yes, all the meals are listed, along with when you should have them.

Where the self-help bits come in (besides keeping a well-stocked larder, which really everyone should know) is when it gets to discussing things like how to treat guests and how to talk to trolls. It’s terribly important to know how to talk to trolls, let me assure you.

On the trivia front, there’s quite a bit, but a diehard Tolkien fan probably won’t find much to sate them. Though knowing that Rivendell’s checkout time is 11am is terribly useful on those longer trips.

Look, if you’re going to cosplay a hobbit at a con — you have to buy this book. No question. There’s just every possible relevant detail in there, though the discussion on clothing (pg 130) is pretty darn light. But for everything else — pipe-smoking, travel tips, riddling — it’s a must.

The Geek Handbook
Although this is a self-help book, it’s really, really funny. It was worth reading just for the humor, good advice or not.

The Geek Handbook is a soup-to-nuts guide to being a geek, dealing with a geek or raising a geek. Really, all three! And it gives all this great advice using the “spoonful of sugar” method — and in this analogy humor is the sweet, sweet sugar. I had several laugh out loud moments, and I’m sure anyone familiar with geekiness will, too.

“Much like ice cream and Christopher Walken, geeks come in many different flavors.”

Sure, the discussion of stereotypical geeks is — you know, a stereotypical. But even when doing the cliche “type” discussion, Alex Langley (the author) does it with humor and a certain sensitivity. He both mocks the stereotype and discusses the valid bits at the same time. He uses this same technique on all sorts of topics throughout the book, too. On college majors, D&D gamer types, internet personas and the perennial Trek vs Wars camps.

I especially like the chapter on social interaction, and his advice for socially awkward people. Particularly the part on social cues, which was very well done.

There’s even a section on what to and what NOT to wear, with this priceless footnote on sweatpants:

“The only exception to this are guys who are so well endowed that sweatpants are pretty much the only pants that fit them comfortably, or people who are getting laid so much that pants are almost an afterthought. However, unless you’re Jason Stackhouse, you may not need to worry about such things, and if you are Jason Stackhouse, I feel it’s my duty to let you know that your sister has porked a lot of vampires.”

Then there are things like the hairstyles discussion. I swear, this part is practically worth the price of the book by itself.

The styles are in the section on grooming, named for the fictional character they resemble most. Some examples:

The Tony Stark: heavy on bangs and don’t forget the goatee.

The Rogue: longish hair, with that front-facing dual strips of grey.

The Professor X: bald, of course.

There are more, and each is rated on Complexity, Coolness if Done Right and Likelihood You’ll Look Like a Jackass.

For all the humor and advice, there’s also some great stuff to explore on your own, like his picks for best webcomics (broken into several categories), and the ten movies every geek should see.

I heartily recommend it, although obviously you should buy the e-book version, for maximum geekiness. (You might want to slip your favorite clueless relative a paper copy for Holiday X.)

* Though you may also want to invest in a gym membership, if you’re going to seriously eat like a Hobbit.

Moonlight Tarot’s Question Corner: Mystical Answers to Mundane Inquiries

By Angela Kaufman, Moonlight Tarot LLC

August brings the early signs of harvest and the desire to reap the fruits of one’s labor. This month’s Querent, who we will call Lisa, is a hard working professional in the sales industry. She has recently started a new job and is interested in finding out how she can increase her sales.

The initial impressions in this reading are full of harvest symbolism- the image of an Apple tree full of connotations; wisdom, risk, fruitful endeavors and Magick. Lisa should also be mindful of potential clients or agencies with apple or apple tree as part of their logo or name. A secondary impression early on in the reading is that of a computerized program that expands Lisa’s network as well as access to a greater database of information and clients. It seems that this is somehow linked with an educational program suggesting either distance learning or a certification that enables her to expand her reach and customer base as well as the information of benefit to clients.

The first card drawn is the Three of Pentacles. This suggests expansion in business and career as a result of specialized training experience or certification. It suggests that branching out and gaining the edge in career as a result of specialization. Lisa should be on the lookout for opportunities for growth through furthering her education. It also seems like this will be an opportunity that is granted to a group but a small group or team. Collaboration in this advancement opportunity will expand Lisa’s knowledge and skill base but more importantly will give some type of official certification or credential which will attract potential clients. It seems like Lisa’s professional network will be improved through exposure granted by this educational opportunity. This also suggests a time period of about three months during which time sales will increase and client base will expand.

The next card is the Three of Rods. As this is another three it strengthens the emphasis on expansion and broadening Lisa’s horizons especially through small group efforts that take shape within the next three months. This time the emphasis is not only on accomplishments through training and recognition of abilities and skills but on networking and communication. Small focus groups and team efforts that involve writing, research and advertising will help advance sales and customer base. It also feels like some type of database or shared network is involved. Lisa should be alert to opportunities to take part in collaborative group endeavors, focus groups and networking opportunities involving both social networking but also access to information stored in a more advanced database. There is some advantage that will come her way through written communication and likely through electronic communication. It seems like access to this database will increase her clientele and access to the information she is able to provide to clients that will give her an edge in her field.

The final card is the Hierophant numbered 5. This card connects Lisa to institutions and organizations which hold a large established structure. Within the next three months Lisa will have opportunities to expand and increase her training and it seems like she will ultimately be facing the decision to make a commitment to advance within a large organization. If the current company is a small or independent business it seems like some growth will take place over the next few months but that the opportunity to become part of a larger system will be enticing. This system has both work and educational components to it and it seems like Lisa will be able to learn a great deal from her experience with this organization but will postpone the autonomy and creative influence she may currently have in order to complete her training or be part of this organization. Likewise within about three months’ time Lisa will have the opportunity to experience advancement and the full potential of her current work but may come to feel stifled or repressed nonetheless. At this point it seems she will have the opportunity to advance her career by breaking ties with the current organization in favor of one in which she will earn more in the long term after completing some short term training and acquiring further seniority. Long term gains with short term sacrifice will be the theme in this transition as it will seem as if Lisa’s efforts are not bringing suitable level of financial rewards. It also seems like work within a government agency or work that involves an initial return to school will be presented and it will be in Lisa’s favor to pursue this in spite of short term financial constraints. This experience of stagnation and financial plateau after some initial gain and recognition will help serve as a catalyst for Lisa to reinvent her professional image with the help of a return to an educational program or alignment with this powerful organization. It also appears that a mentor or guardian particularly an older gentleman, is influential in helping Lisa to develop in her career at this time. The next few months will lead Lisa to opportunities to find her footing within her field by aligning with a powerful structure or institution which helps give her greater confidence and grounding in her new area. This institution blends spiritual tradition with very practical knowledge and skills and will help Lisa to develop an edge over the competition. This fall would be an ideal time to reconsider training opportunities that will allow Lisa to combine traditional techniques with access to newer technology.

As Lisa’s reading emphasizes the number three, this is a key time to network and expand the social links fostering connections with clients and selling opportunities. The theme of expansion is also fostered by stimulating Lisa’s own energy through creativity- especially use of the written word. This will help discharge stagnant energy and develop new potential through the creative act of establishing the end result through the focus of the imagination. It seems that Lisa will progress financially and will find a solid basis in her career but will eventually find some aspects of her current work to be too personally limiting. More specifically it seems that her sales and profits will increase but she will find that her personal share of her earnings will level off. It seems that she will reach a point where she is earning more than at present but not as much as desired to meet her expectations- either a portion of the earnings gets absorbed by the company or actually plateaus. When this time comes it seems that liberation through increased training or retraining will offer a way for personal and professional advancement. She is encouraged to be on the lookout for opportunities to engage in small focus groups as part of training experiences in the near future and be open to considering affiliation with a larger organization that fosters growth through certification, training and knowledge passed down through an official structure or hierarchy. Membership in a group that utilizes an electronic database to gather and share information will also be to her benefit. There is also an impression of mentors both in the physical and spiritual planes- Lisa’s Higher Power is guarding her interests and there is a strong intuitive/guardian spirit present with her especially in travel. She may have this energy focused in the form of a talisman or guardian image or icon in her car, but even if not this spiritual energy travels with her and is looking out for her highest good. She is encouraged to be receptive to the subtle guidance this spiritual energy imparts on her in the form of intuitive knowing beyond logical reason.

Best of luck to Lisa in her quest to enhance her career and find her niche in a new market. Remember, no matter where you are reading this column all readings are intended for entertainment purposes in accordance with NYS law.

Culture on the Couch: Western Civilization’s Journey from Crisis to Maturity

by Anodea Judith

Sooner or later, we all have to grow up. We’ve heard this a thousand times, as if it were a fact, as certain as death and taxes. Continue to put one foot in front of the other and you will eventually get there, wherever “there” might happen to be. Ideas of maturity vary, but most people assume it will just happen by itself, like ripening fruit, with time as the only necessity.

If only it were that easy! Would that we could endlessly play in the sun and hang passively on the vine for our ripening, until the day when we finally let go and return to earth. Would that we could play innocently in the Garden of Eden, with benevolent parents to protect and guide us, as we imagine it might have been in times of old. Or would that we didn’t have to grow up at all, and could live in the endless pursuit of our pleasures, following our whim from moment to moment, without limitation or responsibility. Ah but these are longings of a former time.

The world of our ancestors was indeed simpler. People grew up, but with fewer choices, their path held more certainty. Follow your duty, do as you’re told, and everything will work out. There were challenges of course, but the external world was expected to continue, just as it always had. Mother Earth would provide for our needs, and Father would set the rules. Growing up meant that we surrendered gracefully to authority and became obedient members of society. Conformity became more important than doing the grueling work of finding our true Self. “Maturity” in those times lacked authenticity and meaning.

Today we face a far different reality, and facing this reality squarely is one of the tasks of growing up. The parental free ride that has given us abundant resources since our earliest infancy is, alas, coming to an end. We who are alive today are saddled with a responsibility far greater than any of our ancestors have faced: the task of saving four billion years of evolution from the possibility of extinction – nothing less than the task of caring for an entire planet. This is not a job for children.

Most people know the litany: global warming that could cause worldwide famine and displace hundreds of millions from their homes; war and terrorism that escalates with ever more dangerous weapons in the hands of power driven leaders or their discontents; disappearing oil reserves that threaten economic collapse; rampant consumption that exhausts resources, environmental decline polluting air, water, and land, with unsustainable energy, economics, and politics expected to govern an exponentially growing population. A grim situation indeed.

We also know that these dire circumstances reveal a deeper crisis of morals and meaning. Depression and chronic illness are epidemic. Economic values serve self-interest above the public good, with the dollar being the deciding factor in almost everything we do. Meanwhile our public media distracts us with sensationalist “Reality TV” shows that have nothing to do with reality – and certainly not the reality that is begging for our attention.

The father figures that we worship, empower, and pretend to elect all too often turn out to be government officials embroiled in scandals, Catholic priests that molest innocent children, gurus who exploit their followers, or swindlers out to make a buck. The archetypal father’s shortcomings are revealed to all who care to look, stripping the role of its numinosity and power. This psychological patricide requires the child to find its own values and wisdom.

The roads that have led us to this point, laid down with the best of intentions, are now leading us astray. With the mother goddess long gone from memory, and the father falling from grace, we have no choice but to give up our passive powerlessness as children and step into our true authority as adults. We are being asked to stand up, speak up, and drum up a reality that has never before existed.

Saving four billion years of evolution is a task for a species on the verge of godlike powers of both creation and destruction, equally capable of either. Today’s problems are the evolutionary drivers, the contractions of the birth process, that will spawn an awakening so massive that history has no precedent. For the planet itself is our teacher and initiator, taking us through a rite of passage from adolescence to adulthood, and from an organizing principle based on the love of power, to one based on the power of love. This rite will challenge every facet of life, both individually and collectively, asking each of us to undergo the task of of self-reflection, individuation, and the spiritual growth necessary for maturity.

Cultural Adolescence

One need only turn on the news to see adolescent behavior raging through all ages, races, creeds, and genders. Creative but disrespectful, powerful but reckless, narcissisticly obsessed with our looks, insisting on immediate gratification of our whims, and bursting with libido, we are sorely lacking in social and environmental conscience. Like teenagers thoughtlessly cleaning out the refrigerator while entertaining their friends, human populations are insatiably consuming the once vast cupboards of oceans and forests in the attempt to satisfy gargantuan appetites. And why not? Hasn’t Mother Nature always kept the cupboards well stocked in the past, free to her children, just for the asking?

As adolescent children face the abrupt halt of their biological growth, they must take their prodigious life force and learn to grow in a new dimension. At best, this dimension is spiritual, growing towards deeper understanding of themselves and their world. But if this passage is blocked or distorted, adolescents act out recklessly, often harming themselves and others. Without understanding the longer view of life, they can destroy essentials before they learn their true value. In the case of adolescent suicide, this can even be their own life.

To become adults, adolescents who have previously been nurtured, cared for, and educated by elders must learn to provide for themselves, and others in turn. They must learn about the meaning of life, the structure and order of the world, and their purpose within it. Yet they are also compelled–by the unique life force within them–to question and change that structure as they grow into it. It is a tumultuous time, as any parent knows, and there are days when we may look at our teenagers with exasperation and wonder if they will ever grow up. Yet we have no choice but to move forward as best we can, and hold a container for their process.

Just as adolescence marks the end of physical growth, our human population has grown to its adult size and can no longer continue to expand in the physical dimension, producing more bodies at an exponential rate. We have reached (if not surpassed) the carrying capacity of our biosphere. World population has doubled in the last half-century, climbing from 2.5 billion in 1950 to over seven billion now. Just for perspective, this means there has been more population growth in the last half-century than in the four million years since the earliest humans walked on their hind legs! From the depletion of top soil and underground aquifers, to diminishing oil reserves; from the disappearing forests to the greenhouse gases that are raising global temperatures; from urban smog, to waste disposal; from the billions who live in poverty to the epidemic diseases that threaten life–every facet of human and non-human society is impacted by our unchecked population growth. Controlling that growth is a facet of maturity.

It is not only population growth that must be curbed, but the way that we view progress and success. Ever since the Industrial Revolution, progress has been measured by growth. The success of a company is usually defined by its expansion, not its social contribution. Growth is measured in terms of more products, bigger markets, larger infrastructure, and ultimately greater profits. Whether that means building more housing developments, expanding roads and highways, infiltrating indigenous cultures with Western products and lifestyles, or simply crafting a way to make more with less–our “industrial growth society” must place its value on something other than growth before we exhaust our life support systems. We are quickly discovering that growth-based futures don’t have a sustainable future.

Yet, just like an adolescent, growth has been the driving force of our biology since its earliest beginnings. Prehistoric nomads focused on images pertaining to birth. The Bible tells us to go forth and multiply. From the farmer’s apple tree to the corporate sales charts, growth symbolizes success. In the earlier eras of our collective childhood, this was entirely appropriate. That’s what children do – they grow constantly from birth to adolescence. Like the infamous ship, Titanic, it’s not easy to turn such a colossal system around–even when we see the iceberg up ahead.

But now we must harness that creative urge to multiply and point the evolutionary arrow in a new direction – toward spiritual growth, education, and wisdom. Such potential has never occurred before in our evolutionary history. It signals an extraordinary need for responsibility and a driving imperative to wake up. But even more, it calls for an awakening of the heart. For the values of the heart are what sustains relationship, and our future depends on successful relationships: with each other, with nature, with all that are part of this glorious earth. The puer society that is consuming our world with its rampant consumption and delusions of grandeur needs to find its sacred ground in the Earth, acknowledge its denied Shadow, and balance the archetypal energies of Masculine and Feminine. This is unlikely to occur without entering deeply into a profound healing process.

Culture on the Couch

If we are to reach planetary adulthood, we must heal our wounds, both individually and collectively. We must reclaim the ancient Mother and redeem the archetypal Father. We must face our collective shadow of domination and greed. We must find structures that support our spiritual natures, with disciplines to strengthen mind, body, and most of all, to deepen our soul. We can learn to live authentically, with fully embodied lives and mythically inspired visions.

As individuals enter their own healing process, they open new possibilities for action. As we apply these healing principles to our collective existence, the culture itself begins to heal. No one can do it alone, and the good news is that no one has to. The one and the many work together as a complex field of mutual influence and co-evolution.

The possibilities that await us are unknown, but we are guided by profound archetypes of wholeness – the thrust of the evolution towards greater realization and consciousness. What we are now is a mere shadow of what we can become – in every sense of the word. A glorious banquet awaits us on the other side of this transformation. But the doors to this banquet will only open when we have the ability to walk through consciously, peacefully, and with a maturity that is worthy of parenting the future.

What lies ahead is beyond our imagining, nothing less than the dawning of the next age of civilization, the ability to create Heaven on Earth. We can take the reins from the decaying patterns of the past and hitch them to an evolving vision of the future. The world is in our hands. The journey toward wholeness is now thrust upon us as a collective. We can all be a part of this process. In fact, that’s the only way it will happen.

The only myth that is going to be worth talking about in the immediate future is one that is talking about the planet, not this city, not these people, but the planet and everybody on it… And what it will have to deal with will be exactly what all myths have dealt with—the maturation of the individual, from dependency through adulthood, through maturity, and then to the exit; and then how to relate this society to the world of nature and the cosmos. . . And until that gets going, you don’t have anything.

Geek Month in Review: July 2013

By JB Sanders

Scorching July…

Weird Things in Urban Environments
What weird things, I hear you ask? There’s the over 500 dogs living in the Moscow subway system, or the City Below Kansas City (businesses and storage, mostly) in the old limestone mines, or Thames Town, which is a completely artificial English town just outside Shanghai. Plenty of urban weird to go around. How about the town in Pennsylvania that has been on fire since 1962, and will probably keep burning for another 250 years? Or the abandoned island city of Gunkanjima? It looks a lot like that dream city from Inception, actually.

The Right Way to Rehabilitate a Quarry
Those folks in China sure know how to revitalize an abandoned quarry: build a nearly billion-dollar hotel/resort inside it. With a 100m waterfall visible from all the rooms. Extra bonus points: looks like a James Bond villain’s lair

That’s Not a Train Set, This is a Train Set
Ever wonder what the greatest model train setup in the world would look like? Think you’ve already seen it? Nope.

Sci-Fi Cooking
First episode of this YouTube series? Cooking Klingon Gagh and Blood Wine.

Robot Spider, Check
So this company has a robot spider for sale, or you can order the plans to print it from your handy 3D printer. It comes with an eye camera in the thorax. That’s not creepy at all, right?

Magnetic Levitation & Mobius Strip Tracks
Scientist shoots a video of not only a “train” floating along a track in the shape of a Mobius strip, but also explains everything. It’s Science-y!

Beer Labels in Motion
I don’t know if this is geeky or just plain weird. Some inventive person has taken clever microbrew beer labels and animated them. How long before we have active-display labels on products?

How to Be Invisible to Mosquitos
The answer: wear the special patch that exudes a chemical that confuses a mosquito’s CO2 sense. That’s how they find you, the CO2.

Details of the Siberian Princess’ Tattoos
See the designs of the Siberian Princess, preserved for several millennia in the permafrost.

New Star Control Game?
Some of you, those of you old enough to remember a computer game from 20+ years ago, may remember the ship-to-ship combat and strategy game Star Control. Well, someone acquired the rights to it and is looking to make a sequel.

Mid-Air Haptic Interface
So the folks at Disney Research (did you know that Disney had an R&D department?) are working on a haptic response interface that works by using puffs of air to provide feedback for systems that rely strictly on hand and body motions (like Microsoft’s Kinect).

Largest Virtual Space Battle Ever
You know it’s a New Geek World when giant space battles are reported on the BBC’s front news page. Eve Online held a 4000-player space battle between two of its largest factions for control of a few systems’ worth of resources. Which is pretty neat.

Beethoven on the Theremin
Here’s an orchestral arrangement of Beethoven’s 9th symphony done on 167 theremins and 1 piano.

That’s Not a Snow-blower!
This is a snow blower. Brought to you by Switzerland, the land that doesn’t do things by halves.
