I always say that I don\u2019t need to buy spell books, because the magic is inside me. At the end of the day, I\u2019m very bare bones in my magical practice. That said, I own a RIDICULOUS number of books about spells and\/or full of spells! When I got offered the chance to review \u201cAncient Spells and Incantations: Echoes of Magic Through the Ages & Across Cultures\u201d by Enid Baxter Ryce I read the email and thought to myself, nah. However, I did not delete the email about the book. Every time I logged into The Magical Buffet email it was there. I read and reread the description of the book several times. Finally, I just couldn\u2019t take it anymore and I asked Weiser Books to mail it to me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not to sound clich\u00e9, but \u201cAncient Spells and Incantations\u201d ensorcelled me on sight. And since the author created the cover art and the illustrations throughout the text, it was by design. In the book Ryce discusses weaving text into her artwork, and even though I know it\u2019s not what it says, it feels like the cover art says, \u201cLOOK AT ME!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Beautiful illustrations aside, Enid Baxter Ryce has done some impressive research to unearth from the depths of history the poetry of our ancestors attempting to make magic. Translating from Latin and Old English, \u201cAncient Spells and Incantations\u201d shows the universality of human emotions, regardless of time or place. True to its title, the book is full of spells, but if you read it, you\u2019ll find it is much more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
