Obviously, this means when given to opportunity to receive a review copy of “Cookbook of Shadows: Simple Recipes for Powerful Magick” by Melanie Marquis I couldn’t resist.

At this point in time there is already quite the array of food and drink based magic books available, and they all have something unique to offer, including “Cookbook of Shadows.” Marquis is aware that the concept of kitchen witchery is nothing new and thusly provides just a summary of the concepts and basics. There is enough info that this could easily be your first book on the subject, but brief enough that someone like myself, who owns many books on the topic, isn’t bored at an overlong rehashing.

The rest of the book is laid out in a wonderful spellbook/book of shadows style. The recipes are divided up by elements, then astrology, and then magical goals. There is also a section devoted to seasonal cooking, and ending with a large list of ingredients and their magical properties. One of the best features is an additional recipe table of contents, making it easy to go back to recipes that stood out to you without necessarily needing to remember their magical significance.

As I usually try to do, I took one of the recipes out for a test drive. My husband and I are fans of cucumber and tomato salad with vinaigrette, so I decided to try the Cooling Cucumber Appetizer recipe. This was a simple, straight forward recipe that was enjoyable. The recipes in “Cookbook of Shadows” vary in complexity of preparation and/or ingredients. There is certainly something in there for anyone.

Melanie Marquis has written a noteworthy addition to the kitchen witch niche with “Cookbook of Shadows.”

You can learn more here.

Get your own copy here. (This is an affiliate link to my Bookshop, which supports independent bookstores throughout the United States.
