{"id":1581,"date":"2007-10-03T19:06:00","date_gmt":"2007-10-03T19:06:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/themagicalbuffet.com\/wordpress\/index.php\/2007\/10\/03\/wild-nights-are-my-glory\/"},"modified":"2007-10-03T19:06:00","modified_gmt":"2007-10-03T19:06:00","slug":"wild-nights-are-my-glory","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/themagicalbuffet.com\/wordpress\/index.php\/2007\/10\/03\/wild-nights-are-my-glory\/","title":{"rendered":"Wild Nights Are My Glory"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span><em>I know you should be in the middle of celebrating &ldquo;Banned Books Week&rdquo; but I felt the need to interrupt.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>Last month the world became a little less warm when author Madeleine L&rsquo;Engle <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2007\/09\/08\/books\/07cnd-lengle.html?_r=3&amp;hp&amp;oref=slogin&amp;oref=slogin&amp;oref=slogin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">passed away<\/a>.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>Despite her age, which was 88, L&rsquo;Engle&rsquo;s passing hit me fairly hard.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>It took a while to decide what if anything to say about it.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>A recent batch of storms helped me figure out what to say.<br \/><\/em><\/span><span>&nbsp;<br \/><\/span><span>&ldquo;Wild nights are my glory.&rdquo;<br \/><\/span><span>&nbsp;<br \/><\/span><span>Even though I read those words way back in fourth grade, even now, as I gaze out of our window and see a storm blowing in I say to myself, &ldquo;Wild nights are my glory.&rdquo;<span>&nbsp; <\/span>Those words were said by Mrs. Whatsit in Madeleine L&rsquo;Engle&rsquo;s book &ldquo;A Wrinkle in Time.&rdquo; <br \/><\/span><span>&nbsp;<br \/><\/span><span>I had not been much of a reader.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>Then, in fourth grade our teacher, whose name I can no longer recall, forced us to read &ldquo;A Wrinkle in Time.&rdquo;<span>&nbsp; <\/span>When I say forced, I mean forced.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>We would sit in class and take turns reading it aloud.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>You could not escape it.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>I wish I could remember his name, because he changed my life forever.<br \/><\/span><span>&nbsp;<br \/><\/span><span>&ldquo;A Wrinkle in Time&rdquo; slowly crept into my subconscious.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>I couldn&rsquo;t stop thinking about it.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>Meg, the awkward idiot\/genius with a fierce heart.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>Charles Wallace, the young boy who represents the next step in human evolution.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>The twins, so remarkably normal.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>Mrs. Murray, the beautiful scientist with the violet eyes.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>Calvin O&rsquo;Keefe, the sport.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>Mrs. Who, Mrs. Whatsit, and Mrs. Which, forces of nature, forever giants in my mind.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>It, the giant pulsating brain of my childhood nightmares.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>And the tesseract.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>Always the ant on the edge of a skirt.<br \/><\/span><span>&nbsp;<br \/><\/span><span>The fourth grade will always be a significant grade.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>Every child I have ever shopped for has received the book &ldquo;A Wrinkle in Time&rdquo; as a gift the year they are in the fourth grade.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>No matter how old I get, I will never forget that in the fourth grade I read &ldquo;A Wrinkle in Time&rdquo;.<br \/><\/span><span>&nbsp;<br \/><\/span><span>September 6, 2007 Madeleine L&rsquo;Engle passed away at the age of 88.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>I doubt she&rsquo;ll ever know how much she changed my life, but I&rsquo;m sure she knows how many lives she touched.<br \/><\/span><span>&nbsp;<br \/><\/span><span>It&rsquo;s starting to rain now.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>I can hear the thunder.<br \/><\/span><span>&nbsp;<br \/><\/span><span>&ldquo;Wild nights are my glory.&rdquo;<br \/><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I know you should be in the middle of celebrating Banned Books Weekbut I felt the need to interrupt.
