It’s hard to keep a good book down, which explains why thanks to Crossed Crow Books the once unavailable “Witchcraft on a Shoestring: Practicing the Craft Without Breaking the Budget” by Deborah Blake is back. It’s hard to believe it first was published by Llewellyn Worldwide in 2010, but damn, here we are.
“Witchcraft on a Shoestring” was a helpful book back in 2010, but I feel it’s even more relevant now that we’re all starting to truly feel the effects of our hyper capitalist society, where things are purchased just to be highlighted on our social media, and our environment is buckling under the weight of discarded purchases. While it’s true that it is handy, and fun, to collect magical, witchy ephemera, it is hardly a requirement and Blake’s book highlights that fact. In Blake’s book you’ll find instructions on how to make ritual items for less, affordable ways to amass information, budget friendly ways to feed a crowd at holiday celebrations and more.
Let’s say you own the 2010 version of “Witchcraft on a Shoestring,” do you need this version? Not really. I will say that I prefer the layout of the table of contents in this new version, and as far as I could tell the only thing you’ll miss out on is a small index featuring runes that was in the original. However, if the copy you have is dog eared from repeatedly referencing it (mine is from making the Tres Leches Pie on repeat) this is a good time to upgrade.
No matter what kind of witchcraft you practice, and even if you’re horrible at DIY (like myself) you will find value in owning “Witchcraft on a Shoestring” by Deborah Blake.
