I probably should have spelled out the Giant Internet Hoax part for the Greater Unwashed Masses who might not know about it. You suck up enough of these hoaxes, over the years it begins to just feel like a joke culture that everyone knows about.

It takes more energy to perform electrolysis of water than you get from burning the resulting gas. It simply can not sustain itself, it requires an external energy source. Otherwise, you have a device which outputs more energy than it consumes, and if that were possible, then you’d be essentially creating power from nothing — and you wouldn’t need any fuel at all.
