The Daemon Tarot

Calling Ariana Osborne’s “The Daemon Tarot” a tarot is giving it far too little credit. Osborne based the set of 69 cards on Jacques Auguste Simon Collin de Plancy’s “Dictionnaire Infernal”. As you would suspect, that’s French for “Infernal Dictionary”. The book itself, we learn from Osborne’s introduction, has a bit of history itself. The Dictionary was originally published in France in the 1818 when Collin de Plancy was a demonologist. The book at that time was filled with magic and the idea of using skepticism instead of superstition when making decisions. Then in the 1830’s Collin de Plancy converted to Catholicism and in 1863 a sixth edition of the Dictionary was published that reflected his new beliefs. Essentially, demons became demonic.

Enter Osborne who gets her hands on a copy of this late edition of the Dictionary. She comments that the art, done by Luis Breton, really speaks to her because although the creatures portrayed “are clearly inhuman, their strangeness does not make them appear terrible.” And Osborne sharing that really struck me, and that’s when I was ready to look at these cards with fresh, unbiased eyes.

Like all tarot sets, each card has its own entry in the companion book. The entry is broken into three sections: Annotation provides information on the subject and includes research from the Dictionary and more, Inspiration shows Osborne’s interpretations and insights into the subject of each card, and Divination, since the cards don’t follow a traditional tarot deck format this section gives focused meanings that can be used in spreads. Osborne suggests using a one card draw or a six-card spread that she describes with this deck.

Ariana Osborne's The Daemon Tarot

With all the information contained in the 142 page book, and the classic artwork on the 69 card set, “The Daemon Tarot” is an excellent reference tool, not just a divination tool. At a suggested retail price of $19.95 everyone should own it. Seriously.

Moonlight Tarot’s Question Corner: Mystical Answers to Mundane Inquiries

By Angela Kaufman, Moonlight Tarot LLC

Allegedly, March will bring spring, at least according to the calendar. As we all look forward to sunny days, this month’s Querent would like to know the potential for her budding romance. A woman we will call Esther has been enjoying a gradually developing courtship and is beginning to wonder about the long term commitment potential as well as any potential roadblocks in this relationship.

First, Esther should be applauded for her approach, as her inquiry reflects her awareness that regardless of indications from a Tarot reading, she is ultimately the one to direct her own destiny. The Tarot can help Esther anticipate strengths and set backs along the way, yet the development of a relationship is like the growth of a garden and numerous factors contribute to a successful harvest.

But fall is a long way off, we are approaching the season of growth and Esther’s reading reflects this. The initial impressions are of light, excitement, and adventure. It feels like this relationship brings invigorating surprises and that it has brought rejuvenation and hope to Esther. It also feels like this couple is growing in comfort and familiarity with each other. This relationship feels committed and feels like it has strong potential for long term growth. The Tarot cards drawn for this reading are the 9 of Cups, the 2 of Wands, and The Fool.

The 9 of Cups reflects the happiness this pair finds in this relationship and suggests this is a match that meets Esther’s standards in many ways. Contentment and celebration are also suggested by this card, as well as a sense that this couple is very comfortable sitting at home together, but is more likely to get out, travel and have an active social life. Over about 3-9 months this relationship develops smoothly.

I feel that within the next 3-9 months the euphoric phase of this relationship will unfold followed by an important decision. I feel like this decision, represented by the 2 of Wands, deals with a change in direction that requires compromise and agreement in this partnership. It seems that development in a life area other than the relationship will require a move, it feels career related, and that this is a significant turning point for this couple. Their partnership can continue together, it feels like the commitment to this change is mutual. It seems initially that without moving in together right away, Esther’s partner will be spending more and more time in her home, it seems like living together without officially living together, until this point of change where it feels more like a commitment is made official but part of this requires venturing out of the comfort of familiar surroundings. The Two of Wands also suggests an opportunity that brings career advancement and coincides with growth in the relationship. It also indicates travel together, frequent adventures and a common starting point from which this relationship can develop.

The Fool is a significant card and bears no indication for the intelligence of Esther or her partner. Rather it signifies the beginning of a journey. I feel this card speaks to the journey for both partners although this is typically a carefree, independent energy. It feels like spontaneity and willingness to be open to travelling where opportunities offer without excess baggage from the past. This can have a twofold significance. Letting go of emotional baggage from the past in order to fully embrace this new relationship, as well as not being hindered by excess obligations, being able to move with the changes presented in this relationship. The Fool is about liberation and this relationship seems to follow a course of being inspiring, carefree and liberating. Esther will be confronted with new ideas and plans that may seem risky or out of the blue. She can expect good things to develop if she maintains an open mind. Faith in herself and courage to let go of what has not worked in the past will help her transcend limitations. This is not the time to give in to self doubt or fear based thinking.

In regard to any obstacles in this relationship, nothing from this reading stands out as a red flag or major issue to overcome. The only indicators of a challenge are the indicators of change requiring an open mind. I feel like there are aspects of Esther, or her partner’s career that potentially distracts from the relationship at times- particularly long hours or an unusual schedule seem to play a role in this, but it does not feel like this diminishes the relationship. When the time comes for change to take place it feels like relocation to someplace new is on the horizon, Miami feels related to this but Esther should be open minded to exploring the options as they present without feeling confined or limited to options that were not part of the original plan. It feels like faith in a major move will bring advancement both in the relationship and in career. It feels like an official commitment is made in the process of this transition and this solidifies long term potential.

Best of luck to Esther in all of her future endeavors. Remember, no matter where you are reading this, in accordance with NYS law all readings are intended for entertainment only.

Fast and Easy Daily Divination

By Deborah Blake

Lots of people read their horoscope every morning, but for many of us, that is the only bit of “checking in” we do. After all, few people have the time (or inclination) to do a full tarot spread with their morning coffee. And mostly, we don’t need that much detailed information. Luckily, there are lots of fast and easy ways to get a quick hint at what your day holds, or what you need to know to make the most of it.

Years ago, when I was practicing with my first coven, my then-high priestess had us do an interesting experiment. Every day for a month, we pulled one rune stone at the beginning of the day. We wrote down the stone, and any flashes of intuition we got when we looked at it, and then checked in at the end of the day to see if there was, in fact, any relationship between the two. Not surprisingly, there often was.

This also turned out to be a great way of learning the runes themselves. I started out having to look up the meanings of each rune in a book [my favorite is Lisa Peschel’s A Practical Guide to the Runes—it’s old, but it is easy to use and understand], but by the end of the month, I was much more familiar with them. If you’re interested in becoming better acquainted with the stones or any other form of divination, try doing something like this. It’s a fun and practical way to learn. Either pull one out of a bag, if that’s what you store them in, or place them in a small bowl and just close your eyes and grab one.

If rune stones aren’t your thing, you can do this with tarot cards instead. If you’re not used to using the cards, I suggest starting with something basic like the classic Rider-Waite Tarot. That’s the one I started with, lo these many years ago, and I have been reading professionally for ages with this one pack. [It’s a bit battered by now, but it works so well for me, I’m rarely tempted to switch to something else, despite the bevy of beautiful decks out there.] However, there are lots of variations on the tarot card deck, and you can pick whichever one seems to “speak” to you the most loudly.

As with the rune stones, you can start your day by shuffling the deck and picking out a card at random. Sometimes one will even jump out of the deck at you. You can either ask a question (“What does my day hold?” “What do I need to know today?”) or just see what comes up. If you are dealing with something tricky, you can ask a specific question, like “Should I go out on a date with that hunky guy at the office?”

There are plenty of alternatives for those who don’t have or don’t like either rune stones or tarot cards. I have a number of interesting decks that I use for inspiration, answers, or just a way to get in touch with spirit quickly and easily.

One of my favorites, which I’ve used numerous times in ritual with my group Blue Moon Circle, is the Goddess Inspiration Oracle deck, by Kris Waldherr. She’s well known for her beautiful goddess-themed artwork, and this deck is filled with amazing images, as well as lovely descriptions of the 80 goddesses featured on the cards—yet another way to learn while being inspired and guided.

The Conscious Spirit Oracle Deck by Kim Dreyer

My current favorite was a Yule gift from my friend Rebecca Elson of this very blog, The Magical Buffet. The Conscious Spirit Oracle Deck by Kim Dreyer has lovely pictures and inspiring affirmations. I’ve taken to pulling one each morning, standing at my altar, and reading it out loud. Then I try to carry its message through the rest of my day. For instance, this morning’s card was number 18: Air Elemental. And the affirmation said, “I embrace the element of air and am open to all knowledge and wisdom.” Isn’t that a great way to start out the day? (Also, I have to do research today, so it makes a certain amount of sense.)

I’m not sure exactly what it is about the Conscious Spirit Oracle Deck that has me so captivated. Some of it is the sheer gorgeousness of the cards themselves. (Even the back of the deck is amazing.) The introduction says the deck was created “to honor, celebrate, and reconnect to Nature, Spirit and the Divine Feminine in all her forms: the angel, fairy, goddess, the maiden, mother and crone,” and it does just that. The deck (from U.S. Game Systems, which puts out many of my favorites) comes with a 44 page guidebook, and gives you the option of working through the cards from beginning to end, or using them randomly, as I have chosen to do. Kim Dreyer, who did both the illustrations and the writing, had done exactly what the introduction suggests, and created a deck that can help guide you, connect you, and inspire you. Little wonder it is my new favorite.

The simplest way to use either of these options is to choose one and simply pull one card each morning. Take a minute to focus on it, and you’re done.

To move a little more deeply (and I highly recommend trying this, at least for a month sometime), write down your card, and any thoughts or feelings you have about it, and keep track of them in a small notebook. (If you already journal, you can add this to your daily jottings.) At the end of a day, a week, or a month, take a look back and see if you can make out any patterns that could be helpful.

Asking for guidance and/or inspiration doesn’t have to be complicated or take a lot of time. You certainly don’t have to be an expert card reader to do it. And the Conscious Spirit Oracle Deck is just one option, but it is a great one.

Moonlight Tarot’s Question Corner: Mystical Answers to Mundane Inquiries

By Angela Kaufman, Moonlight Tarot LLC

The heart of winter is a great time for introspection. This month’s Querent, a woman we will call Marsha, writes to ask about whether her dream of owning her own business- a store that features services and goods-will come to fruition. Her reading indicates this dream involves life lessons and Spirit is taking the opportunity to point to these lessons as they are enacted in Marsha’s quest for her store.

In preparation for Marsha’s reading I perceive the presence of the fox, an animal guide known to her, who seems to be encouraging her to tap into her witty and outgoing nature. The cards that emerge present a message that in some ways contradicts their positions, the majority being reversed suggesting delays and obstacles, yet with meanings that suggest prosperity and advancement. The reading produced a “leaper” or a card whose fall from the deck signals time to proceed to the reading- it is the 6 of Hearts. Following this are the Two of Acorns, reversed, Empress reversed, and Five of Leaves, reversed.

Here's Angela's Core Reading

A great deal is “up in the air”. This seems particularly true because the suits that present correlate with water and air, love and inspiration but lack of grounding and action. I sense there is room to overcome these obstacles. While Marsha has a lot of work ahead of her, it seems she is nevertheless being guided to fulfill her mission, though perhaps differently than she originally dreamed.

The Six of Hearts is a card of reunification and connection to people from the past. As the leaper suggests a warm homecoming for Marsha. I do feel it is with the assistance of another- or rather two others- that things will begin to take shape. One I sense as a business savvy young man, the other seems to be a mature woman. It is not clear to me if these two are related or in what time frame they present. I feel that the woman is in the periphery, and the Empress reversed points to this. The Empress is not only abundance personified, she is also the matron figure, the stable leader and she is prosperity. Her reversal does not negate her meaning, but it does suggest her essence not being fully utilized. A strong mentor, a potential source of materials or funding, a leader whose knowledge has not been enlisted thus far. Expansion is possible but I feel this character in particular is a keystone. This is an earthy person, a practical business minded woman who nurtures growth in others. She is in some ways larger than life and may also represent an institution or agency that provides startup service. The number three will be significant and it may require three attempts that initially seem unsuccessful.

I have jumped ahead to the Empress, but….well, she’s the Empress, and commands instant attention. Back to the Two of Acorns, reversed. The Two of Acorns holds the energy of indecision, lack of movement due to a stalemate. Marsha has halted necessary actions early on in this process. This stalemate can cast doubts but Marsha will need action to overcome stagnation. Even actions that take her dream down an altered path will still break up the energy and invite movement again. Before this vision can manifest Marsha has to come to terms with why her vision has stalled. If Marsha can see her options flexibly, the struggle can be released.

Then the final card, the Five of Leaves, also reversed. Conflicting ideas and conflicting messages have kept Marsha stuck, this time the focus is not so much on the stagnant energy, but on a breakdown in communication. If Marsha is able to be receptive to communication with others, she will find ways to carry her message and refine her mission. This may require her taking alternative routes to the end goal she has in mind. It seems there are potential sources of guidance but the lines are crossed, paperwork has not gone through, in general it seems like a “Mercury Retrograde” situation. Marsha may need to be the one to round up her available mentors and foster cooperation and understanding, and she should be mindful of being pushed to defensiveness, as this may be a natural reaction to her frustration with lack of results but will not serve bringing others on board to help make this dream a reality. It seems she has several valuable connections with influential people. Review the relationships from the past, colleagues, mentors, those who have a common understanding of her business’s mission and her own talents. The turn of events will happen as a result of relationships and networking, carry the message and be open to how others can help you implement steps to make it happen.

With so much hanging in reverse I wanted to see more clearly what is required to break through the barriers. The Empress repeats, she’s opinionated like that, and another Major card, the Hanged Man, presents as well as the King of Hearts. These cards again speak to making the connections that will bring opportunities. I sense this business will form in smaller stages than Marsha may originally imagine, thus opportunities for startup may be overlooked because they do not show the end result. That is because the Hanged Man energy is asking Marsha to look at things from a different angle. Imagine a movie in which the hero is trapped, about to be demolished by his adversary, the hero puts up a commendable struggle and then reaches a moment of surrender…realizing that perhaps they will not save the day this time, perhaps the treasure is lost forever…..and in that moment of acceptance a light shines down and the answer becomes apparent. In the moment of acceptance that control is lost, empowerment is found. Marsha is not being asked to abandon her dream, she is being challenged to step away from the vision of the trophy and contend with the nature of the win itself. What better way to be in the moment than when dangling from a tree by the foot? Well, maybe that is a bit extreme. The lesson however it to take stock of the opportunities now, the talents and relationships and outlets already in place but overlooked because they don’t seem to fit the puzzle. Surrender judgments about how the process should happen and open up to the ways your calling is being shaped in the present. I sense that an initial offer or opportunity will break the ice- it will bring exposure, a foundation and from this foundation the end result can be built.

The King of Hearts, reversed and the Empress reversed also echo the role two key figures, a man and woman, although the woman carries more influence. She may be intimidating but she has resources that will be helpful. The King of Hearts is a helpful connection, there is great happiness found in this relationship, this individual expresses themselves generously and compassionately and is more understanding than the Empress figure who may be more a detached authority- a lending office or financial institution. He is a mentor building confidence and fostering relationships that help Marsha get the start she needs.

The Hanged Man is numbered 12, which echoes the pattern of the Empress, 3, as the sum of the digits equal 3. Three is significant for expansion and growth. This business may take three years to materialize fully, but these three years are significant formative stages. The next 12 months the Hanged Man is requiring Marsha to observe with acceptance the barriers present. Don’t give up on the dream, but be flexible with expectations of how it will come about. Hang in there, literally, as the solutions exist but are easily overlooked. This coming year is surrounded by indicators of relationships. Networking will be the key to release from stagnation. Marsha need to promote herself through relationships and to accept guidance from sources that previously seemed intimidating. Taking every opportunity to promote her vision, Marsha can harness the energy of the Hanged Man to explore options that arise while the bigger goal seems to be “on hold”, as these small steps will lead to the larger opportunities ahead. Paperwork and calculations may need to be reworked and the immediate stages of this business adjusted to fit the present as a starting point leading to full development of her vision in its completed form. This is not a defeat, it is simply a smaller start that gives way to connections and support that will pave the way for the end result. Marsha may need to work in collaboration with others who have conflicting opinions or some digression in verbal or written planning may take place this year- she should keep careful records and copies of paperwork and not overlook aspects of this plan that involve putting ideas to paper covering all aspects of this business- it seems likely there is part of her written plan that needs to be revised but that getting assistance putting the details in writing will be helpful.

Best of luck to Marsha, and I eagerly await the ribbon cutting ceremony! Remember, no matter where you are reading this all readings are conducted for entertainment purposes in accordance with NYS law.

The Inner World of The Sacred World Oracle

I’m so happy! Why? Because I get to talk about “The Sacred World Oracle” which was created by Kris Waldherr. That name may sound familiar to long time Buffet readers because back in 2010 I reviewed Waldherr’s fantastic “Doomed Queens” playing cards deck and the “Ask the Queens Advice Deck”. Both were so beautiful, intelligent, and whimsical that when I saw “The Sacred World Oracle” I was eager to dive in.

Butterfly

Most of the art was adapted from Waldherr’s various books, particularly “Sacred Animals” and the accompanying calendar. The art of “The Sacred World Oracle” is beautiful and creates a magical landscape. This is definitely an oracle deck for those who feel an affinity with nature.

Dragon

The deck is comprised of 44 cards that are divided into 4 types: earth, air, fire, and water. Within each quadrant you’ll find animals (real, mythological, and folkloric). The included book provides you with meanings for these creatures. The book also includes a few spreads to try out. Of course my favorite thing is to draw a single card each morning and then see if the day lines up with the intentions set forth by the card.

Elephant

However you decide to use them, you should get “The Sacred World Oracle” and give them a try.

Salmon

Update I apparently misunderstood the about the art and text section of the booklet provided with the deck. There was a line that credited artists incorrectly that has now been deleted. ALL OF THE ART WAS DONE KRIS WALDHERR.

Moonlight Tarot’s Question Corner: Mystical Answers to Mundane Inquiries

By Angela Kaufman, Moonlight Tarot LLC

Happy 2014 readers! In spite of the dark and cold, January is a great month to be inspired. This month’s Querent, whom we will call Roland, is hoping to make 2014 the year for a big transition- moving to a new home. He wants to know if this will be the big year for this move and if any indication can be given as to direction/distance. For this domestic question I feel compelled to consult the charming retro Housewive’s Tarot.

While conducting the reading I sense a great deal of pressure and anxiety, as if this is matter involves some emotional turmoil. Roland’s three cards are the 6 of Swords, reversed, the Chariot, and the Seven of Swords reversed. When conducting a reading I strive to focus on empowerment rather than fatalistic yes-or-no perspectives. Having said this, my sense is that while Roland may come very close to his goal this year, it is strongly advised that he consider altering his time table. The resounding impression from this reading is reminiscent of the old saying “close but no cigar”. In Roland’s situation however it would be more appropriate to say “you will come close, there will be a cigar, but you will find it most unsavory”. Of course we can see why the latter never became a catching adage. What does this mean for Roland? Should he give up, or try harder? Many times foreknowledge of a situation can provide the opportunity to take different actions and affect change to the overall outcome, but there is no guarantee that this will always be the case. While these cards do not seem favorable for a move happening this year, they likewise do not suggest an outright lost cause.

The first card appears reversed and is the Six of Swords. If this card were right side up and further in placement in the reading it would suggest that Roland would be likely to relocate but that it would come as a compromise, not as his first option. Placed as it is, it suggests that Roland’s itch to move on involves a desire to start over and put a messy situation behind him. He is seeking resolution to a conflict but will not be likely to get his clean start right away. Something is getting in the way. He will be likely to put effort into his goal only to find numerous dead ends and detours along the way….for now. Roland should understand that this does not imply that he should cease his efforts. He may do well to revise his time frame or re-examine his motivation and strategy. This is not likely to be a smooth transition if he insists on pushing forward according to current plans. Also, part of the emotional resolution he is seeking through this transition is likely to allude him. To reference another saying, if Roland is assuming the grass will be greener in another’s yard, he is likely to find that the yard is slightly out of reach for now and even if he had the means to reach it, he would find it is not the solution he initially hoped for. This card is in the recent past position suggesting there has recently been a move or attempt which was not successful. An attempt to relocate may have already been put into motion and then reconsidered, foiled or suspended. In fact the idea of suspension is a theme in Roland’s reading as each card echoes this concept of stalemate.

The second and most significant of the three cards is the Major Arcana card, the Chariot, numbered 7. This card speaks to the soul of the matter. Roland feels mostly ready to move on and has resigned himself to making this transition but is not fully committed on some level to the steps that will be required. He has conflicting feelings that prevent him from taking the necessary actions to make this transition occur. There may be an additional burden that is not so easily relinquished. This may be a lease, mortgage, obligation to a particular location or some type of fear or doubt that keeps him harnessed in place in spite of some efforts to move forward. This is not defeat however. It simply suggests Roland has a little more work to do to prepare himself.

In spite of his determination this card suggests some indecision, even on a subconscious level. There is something of personal significance keeping Roland tied to his present residence. It is more than a financial matter, it is one of personal acceptance. He has not yet come to terms with exactly what this move will entail for him personally and thus has not yet made a full hearted commitment. It also feels like there is something he needs to let go of. In terms of location this card also suggests a difficult choice faced further into the year regarding two very opposite lifestyles or geographic directions, both seemingly equal in terms of attraction and repulsion. As much as Roland wants to move on he still appears to see himself as committed to a particular area and an opportunity is likely to arise that challenges his rootedness to a certain community. He will be challenged to decide between taking a bigger risk and moving farther than expected or remaining and waiting it out to see about future opportunities.

Extra baggage stands in the way of this transition. As the year unfolds, Roland is likely to develop some progress toward his goal and then within 7 weeks or months, find himself at an impasse. It seems more likely that within 2-3 years this move will take place rather than in the immediate future. Roland needs to spend some time searching his conscious and unconscious motivations for this transition and ensure that he is being realistic in his expectations. He will likely devote more energy to preparing for this transition this year rather than taking the action and making the move. This is still a sign of significant progress as he will be more than half way there and will be opening up to finishing stages of this process that propel him beyond the plateau in which he finds himself stuck.

The final card echoes the plateau message as it is another seven, the Seven of Swords, also reversed. This card being reversed suggests a resolution found but with patience and work, and a little more time. In its normal presentation, this card suggests futility and stagnation. Representing the future steps and in a reversed position however, its meaning suggests resolution after overcoming an initially futile attempt. It suggests that Roland is currently stuck and will need to focus the majority of his efforts this year on resolving the plateau he faces, but that by the end of the next 7-12 months he will identify factors that have been sabotaging his goal and will be actively engaged in overcoming these obstacles. This may involve paying off a debt or resolving an issue that was draining his finances. It may also involve taking measures to pursue his goal more efficiently as the current situation suggests his efforts are not representative of a full commitment. The obstacle he faces will be overcome but he needs to take different action and be mindful to not repeat processes that are time and energy consuming without yielding positive results. It seems that if Roland proceeds without overcoming the obstacle represented by the Chariot he will find himself placing much effort to no avail and somehow sacrificing more time, energy, and perhaps even money in the process. There is some aspect of the present situation that if it remains unchecked will be a drain on his progress in moving this year, or will ultimately sacrifice his true goal in the effort to make things happen without a solid base.

Overall the reading suggests progression toward Roland’s goal as the numbers proceed from six to seven and then the number seven is repeated. This suggests action taken and then a stalemate beyond the halfway mark. Either difficulty selling his home or leaving his lease, difficulty securing the final stages of the moving process or a misunderstanding or ambivalence toward the final stages of the move are likely obstacles. These obstacles can be overcome with different action and perhaps a slightly different attitude. When a reading yields a number of reversed cards, it suggests unfulfilled potential. Consider what can be done to “right” the reversals. What energy, resources, compromises or potential assistance is available but not being utilized? View the reversal not as a wall that stands in the way, but as an idea that is emerging but not yet complete. What additional touches are needed to take this idea and put it into action? Interestingly the cards that emerge suggest that the greatest difficulty Roland will face is one of inaction or inability to take action as he originally desired. Anticipating a delay, Roland can be empowered enlist his creativity and flexibility to consider his goal in a different light. If he remains true to the inspiration for his decision and commits himself to the end result he will be better able to navigate through delays in his plans.

There is excess baggage perhaps emotionally and materially, that he needs to resolve and let go of before his plans are able to be executed, as the Chariot is the one card which is upright as if it holds the two reversed cards in the balance. This suggests Roland is at a pivotal stage in his development and before he moves further he must resolve some issues that continue to keep him stuck. By doing so he deepens his commitment to his future life and is ready to leave behind what no longer serves his lifestyle. The reversed Seven of Swords also suggests potential delayed as it is the final card in the reading. If the first reversal in the past suggests an idea that is formulating but not yet complete, a future reversal suggests untapped potential that emerges gradually. Roland is likely to shed his burdens and move away from what has been draining him but it will take some time to go through this process. If he currently rents or owns a home it may take a seven month time period to resolve this burden and in the process he may find himself exerting energy and spending money in the process.

With an open mind and willingness to make the full mind/body commitment to this change Roland will move forward personally and in residence but it seems that this year there are plateaus to overcome at least for the majority of 2014. Best of luck Roland, bring your focus to the ultimate goal and keep your hope your goal is closer than you may realize even when obstacles come your way.

Moonlight Tarot’s Question Corner: Mystical Answers to Mundane Inquiries

By Angela Kaufman, Moonlight Tarot LLC

What better way to spend December than keeping warm with the comfort of animal companions? This month’s querent, who will be referred to as Arthur, writes in asking a question about his feline companion Tiger. Arthur states that since given the opportunity to work from home, he is often visited by his cat Tiger who appears to gaze directly into his eyes as if he were longing to communicate, but Arthur is not sure what Tiger is trying to tell him. He feels this is more than the typical “feed me, pet me, clean my box” communication as his cat seems to be deep in thought when he does this. This months’ reading is on behalf of Tiger and Arthur, to help unlock the doors to communication.

While conducting this reading I didn’t focus so much on Arthur, the human in the relationship, but rather shuffled the cards focusing on the energy of Tiger as it seems he has something important to say. While focusing on Tiger’s energy several impressions emerged. There is a strong sense of approval seeking, Tiger is looking to Arthur to acknowledge his behavior and how well he does his “job” which is very important to him. Tiger is protecting the home and family and wants Arthur to see that although sometimes he gets a little carried away with his playful antics he is, overall, very serious about his work. He also sees Arthur as the CEO to whom he reports and receives his “instructions” for what he needs to do. His role is to look out for the people and animals in the home and to be on alert for trouble. There was also a strong impression of pride and desire for others to be proud of him as well.

Tiger’s reading brings three cards, The World, numbered 21, the Queen of Leaves, and the 6 of Bells which appeared reversed. Arthur’s assumption that Tiger’s communication was of importance is validated here as a Major Arcana card is part of this reading. This affirms that Tiger is trying to share something more than daily cat chat. First and foremost, Tiger is maturing. He is reaching a stage of his life in which he has accomplished many achievements and is likely to be getting along in years or at least reaching seniority and this is important to him. It is important in one sense because he wants his seniority to count for something among his humans. One way that human concepts like social democracy confuse our furry companions lies in our cultural values around equality and sharing. Tiger has no problem sharing and sees himself as generous, but it is in his nature as a cat to take hierarchy more seriously than his human buddies may realize. Therefore it is important for his seniority to be respected- certain treats or privileges given too freely among other cats in the household challenge this order that he feels he has established. He therefore asks to keep in mind the social dynamics among cats in the household and his need for certain territories or routines that were his first to be respected as such. He does not seem greedy, but rather seems to want acknowledgement of his unique position as senior cat. Whether by setting aside certain treats as his, or given to him first then to the others, or allowing that not all toys and territories are equal, would show him recognition of his role as in charge of the cats.

The World

The other significant aspect of the World card for Tiger reflects his personal maturity. He seems proud of an accomplishment and wants to make sure it is known that he is doing his best. This accomplishment may involve four stages or have four aspects or may be in relation to four other people or animals- but it seems that he is achieving a higher degree of balance and harmony and that this has been a real accomplishment for him. In human culture, it would be the equivalent of either a graduation or retirement. He has accomplished a milestone of development and wants it known that he is doing his best to not regress.

It is also no surprise that Arthur perceives something unique in Tiger’s insistence on eye contact. The Queen of Leaves is the diplomatic spokeswoman conveying her ideas and thoughts eloquently and directly. Her appearance in the reading shows that Tiger is in fact trying to be mindful of how he communicates. He has toned down his approach but is asking for undivided attention. He is conveying that he does not require excessive coddling but does want lines of communication to be open- eye contact is a big part of this- he also may lean more toward telepathic communication than other animals in the home who may be more demonstrative with their messages. He is definitely a thinking cat and is curious and in need of mental stimulation. He wants to be kept informed even if plans or routines do not involve him. He sees himself as a manager in the household, not the top manager but second in command and it is important to relay information to him. He appreciates that Arthur talks freely to him but also wants Arthur to know that he is in a sense “talking” back- especially when he insists on eye contact. He also seems to want a bit more cognitive stimulation- hunting games or activities that allow him to safely express his inquisitive nature would be appreciated.

Finally, the 6 of Bells, reversed suggests that part of the communication is open ended and represents an issue not yet resolved. Tiger seems to be concerned about a need for balance when it comes to territory or tangible items of importance to him. These may be toys, treats or items that would be considered like money in cat world. He feels as though something was taken from him- perhaps territory that he is used to- he feels a loss of balance in the hierarchy regarding his possessions or food and is waiting for Arthur to “repay” him. He feels Arthur can rebalance this discrepancy and he gives this a focus much like people would give in matters of justice or conflict resolution. It seems Tiger is looking to Arthur to rebalance the scales in his favor and in some manner express to other members of the household that certain territories, food, or treats are for Tiger reserved for Tiger.

Best of luck Arthur, and Tiger, thank you for the privilege of allowing readers a Tarot fueled glimpse into your world. Remember, whether you walk on two legs or four, all readings are intended for entertainment purposes only in accordance with NYS law.

Moonlight Tarot’s Question Corner: Mystical Answers to Mundane Inquiries

By Angela Kaufman, Moonlight Tarot LLC

It is November and Americans are counting down the days until changes instituted under the Affordable Care Act, aka Obamacare, go into effect. A question on many minds is the subject of this month’s column: What is up with Obamacare? Please understand that while I am curious about the implications of this monumental shift in policy, it is also my intention to not reflect my own views, hopes or fears in this reading- a difficult task and exciting challenge.

In only three cards a glimpse is shown, not every aspect of this complex social, political and economic shift likely to be caused by the institution of this new bill. For an initial intuitive “warm up” I hoped to glean a sense of the good, bad and ugly about the coming changes, trying to be objective and open up purely to the guidance from Spirit. My initial impression is that the original bill promised, discussed and debated will be either stopped or watered down. My sense is that even this close to the “deadlines” there will still be cuts, compromises and political reconstructive surgery on this policy so that what we have heard rumor of will not be what ends up coming down the line. My sense is that discrepancies among powerful institutions that influence government will not allow this bill to pass as intended and civil disobedience in many forms will ensue. I also sense that the majority of individuals hoping to receive positive benefit from this policy change will largely be in the dark about their rights and responsibilities and that misinformation or poor information will be a significant disadvantage to the masses.

On a positive note I sense a turning point on the horizon for numerous health crises including those involving prescription drugs and obesity. The attention given to the flaws in current healthcare system will revolutionize healthcare as we know it and that greater accountability and definitive results will be demanded by numerous powers involved from researchers to insurance companies to health advocacy groups. I feel a shift in power accompanying this issue- on more than a medical front, on an economic and civil rights front as well. Greater attention given to populations neglected and underserved by the healthcare system and greater priorities given to addressing lack of preventive care. Revolutionary ripple effects will follow this change- a fissure or drastic schism among political rivals. The government shutdown last month will not be the last act of disharmony among those in power. Again I wish to emphasize this is not my hope, nor is it any reflection of my personal feelings about this bill. My sense is that the individualization of coverage will not imminently take place- it seems to me that this is initially a result of confusion and lack of awareness of the majority of lay people regarding how to individualize care to meet their needs.

Now for the cards- an interesting mix! No Major Arcana, a surprise considering the significance of this milestone bill- this also leads to my impression that what rolls out next year will be quite watered down but will serve as a philosophical and political catalyst more than an actual step in our collective enlightenment or betterment. There are however two aces. The Ace of Cups, the Four of Swords, and the Ace of Pentacles.

The Ace of Cups suggests happiness, compassion and new understanding emerging. This suggests a unified benevolent and loving atmosphere. It is associated with joy and celebration. I feel this card represents the cleansing, positive aspects of this change- that for many the satisfaction of accessing care will be a relief. It also suggests a new beginning that suffices to satisfy the emotional needs perhaps more style than substance.

The Four of Swords suggests the downside of this transition phase- stagnation, delay and loss of power. The engine that drives this change seems to run out of steam before the main mission is accomplished. There is a sense of being driven into hibernation as well. While delays have already occurred we may expect another delay of four weeks or four months before the final product is ready. Stagnation is likely to occur as multiple sides reach a stalemate and there is little budging from Democrats or Republicans for a period of likely 4 months. Further delays will likely accompany the roll out phase- as if the original plan is laid to rest before it is even born.

The final card in the reading is the Ace of Pentacles. Another ace reaffirms the message of new beginning, after a period of standoff the breaking point will arise in favor of profit and business rather than in favor of the benefit of the public. The bill will be born after progress is halted but what is birthed is more concrete and profit driven version of the original mission, having lost idealism and social conscience. It would also seem that happy optimism are replaced by concrete, direct and rigid final product that serves to get the job done. As much as this bill brings about a new model for healthcare it appears to deliver more economic features than socialist benefits, for better or worse.

As we brace for the changes ahead excitement be prepared to embrace the emergence of new concepts around healthcare stemming from what is benevolent and disappointing about this first step in the direction toward a new model of managing health needs. The initial changes slow in coming, bring dividing lines both economically and philosophically. We may choose this transition to be our collective initiation- a catalyst for change that may not fully take shape for another four years or so but which at least brings to life the possibility of a system that looks far different from what has been accepted as status quo. The “first born” version of this plan appears to fall short of the social ideals upon which it was originally based, but it is nevertheless the first step. As a catalyst, this first bill will serve the purpose of challenging the past model and though it seems to come close to mimicking it when all is said and done I feel the door will be open for further change in the long term.

Moonlight Tarot’s Question Corner: Mystical Answers to Mundane Inquiries

By Angela Kaufman, Moonlight Tarot LLC

The dark evenings of October set the tone for reflection and preparation for the winter months to come. This month’s Querent, a young man we will call Jacob, has reason to reflect as it is also the month that will mark his 28th birthday. He is looking to the Tarot this month for general guidance. The birthday is a celebration of the solar return- the passage from youth to maturity, and the development of one’s identity through the lifespan. Jacob’s birthday is of special significance to astrologers as well- for it is the time of his Saturn Return- the date when Saturn returns to its position in the Natal Chart- typically falling in the 28-30th year of life. This is a special milestone in maturity as it is associated with challenges that mark the delineation between youth and adulthood, illusion and truth, carelessness and responsibility. Saturn is also the marker of time and maturity- and Jacob’s timing couldn’t be better!

For Jacob this will be a time of change, truth and challenges. A rewarding but testing journey awaits, and Jacob will be called upon this year to separate the illusions of youth from the wisdom of maturity. This is a time to clean out the closets- both internally and externally- to sort how things are from the fantasy of how we wish they would be. Tests require examining attitudes, and behavior patterns from earlier in youth which are beginning to take their natural toll. Recall that much is forgiven in youth that is not accepted in adulthood- when the puppy chews our best sneakers it is easy to smile and shrug it off, but the same act is harder to tolerate when carried out by a grown dog who can no longer draw on the “cute and innocent” factor to avoid consequences. This is this type of growth spurt Jacob will be facing in the coming year.

The first card is a leaper, emerging from the deck spontaneously during the shuffling process, and it is the Ace of Swords. This will be a dynamic year. A year of new beginnings no longer lingering in the abstract world of thought and fantasy- but culminating in action. Changes will be made, not just talked about. This will be a time for Jacob to jump in with both feet, to overcome procrastination and passive acceptance of what he does not find tolerable in his life. This is the time for Jacob to put his ideas into action, to challenge himself to change, assertively, that which is no longer serving his best potential. Success and accomplishment can be achieved but only by making some changes to Jacob’s routines, to get different results he must take different actions. He will be more likely to summon the courage to follow his heart this year, rather than holding back or giving in to insecurities or doubts. This is a powerful time to effect change- so take hold and accept opportunities as they arise. Like the sword itself, Jacob may find it necessary to make certain “cuts” in his lifestyle this year- cutting out sources of negativity, people or activities that stand in the way of his goals or drain his energy, unhelpful doubts or insecurities, and most importantly, cutting out excess baggage by honestly confronting lessons from the past. Willingness to accept that new beginnings are on the horizon will be crucial to breaking negative cycles and patterns that have become routine.

As if to echo this message, the first official card in the spread is the 10 of Swords. This is the final of the Swords suit before coming to the Court cards- thus it shows finality, closure and endings. Jacob will find that unhelpful and self-sabotaging behaviors will reach their natural conclusion- events will transpire in such a way that Jacob will have to confront bad habits and unfulfilling patterns in relationships and work, and lifestyle at large. At best, Jacob will find relief and an opportunity to take advantage of new opportunities and more mature priorities. Lifestyle changes that promote release of toxic, negative, and self-defeating routines all in preparation for new growth will begin to surface. Exits sought will be found. At worst, even resistance to change will prove futile as circumstances will unfold that make it more difficult to maintain the status quo. The culmination of stress and burdens carried in the past will weigh on Jacob until he is prepared to accept that things must change. Accepting responsibility and going with new opportunities, taking initiative and acting for his own good rather than against it, will prove an easier way to harness the energy of change. Fighting this current will only prove draining. Like a swimmer caught in a riptide, the best thing for Jacob to do at this time is face the music and roll with, not against, the current. In particular, aspects of life that included impulsivity, over-extending himself, excessive work or exercise, or risky behavior, will begin to catch up to Jacob in new ways if these issues are not addressed. Fatigue, burn out, resentment toward others, or even physical health issues or accident prone-ness are possible if things continue as they are. Jacob is entering a phase in his life where habits and choices once perceived as harmless will begin to have an impact. Be it smoking or poor eating habits, overworking or partying too hard, this is a crucial time for Jacob to act on resolutions to break destructive cycles before they catch up to him in ways that they had not previously.

To give greater emphasis to the above message, the Powers that Be have slapped on a big, glaring neon sign- lest we not quite get the picture. They do this through the Tower card. The Tower is considered the archetype of cataclysmic change. Some see only doom and gloom when reflecting on this energy, but that is like looking at school as an annoyance between summer vacations. Jacob can awaken to the energy of this card and ready himself to accept the intervention of powers greater than his conscious planning on his behalf providing just the wake-up call he needs in order to find closure where it is needed and strive for better. Imagine that a comfortable, well-rehearsed routine has become both a source of security as well as monotony and self-limitation. Sound familiar? We all have these experiences, sometimes several times at once or throughout the lifespan. Luckily we also live in a universe where things don’t always go as planned, and we don’t always get our way. When circumstances beyond our conscious control result in large scale disruptions to our cozy plans, it is easy to become upset, angry, disappointed, defeated, or feel abandoned by the Spiritual Force we once thanked when things were going our way. This is the lesson of the Tower card. So, Jacob will have the good fortune of not getting his way, of being disappointed, of realizing aspects of his plans are not sustainable. The fortune of seeing his circumstances as they are- warts and all- so that he may embrace the opportunity to rebuild. Yes, the Universe is about to kick over your sand castle, Jake, but it is because you need to understand that…well…castles made of sand melt in the sea, eventually, as Jimi Hendrix once said. What can Jacob do in light of this? Just be open minded, be cautious, be willing to accept the tides of change, and begin to see that although beautiful or special, a sand castle is not the deluxe dream house it may have passed for at one time. Begin to recognize that the beach is vast, and when one sandcastle collapses it can be a great opportunity to jump back in the water, ride the waves, move on down the shore, visit the boardwalk, make another sandcastle, or fly a kite instead. This is not the time to put all your hopes and dreams into a castle of sand, or in any one thing or object for that matter- begin to explore impermanence, make peace with powerlessness, and don’t count on things or people to provide your foundation, or to define who you are. It is also not productive to curse the wind, waves or seagulls because the sandcastle doesn’t last forever. Instead recognize the bounty that does exist in whatever landscape you find yourself and create something new.

The final card in the reading is another Major Arcana card, Temperance. Like the movement, this card suggests self-discipline, patience, balance and avoidance of excess. Jacob would do well to examine where he has fallen into extremism or risky routines or behaviors. If favorite indulgences are giving way to consequences- take note, this is not the time for extremes in work, play, or partying. This is the time to moderate, modify, collaborate with others- that’s right- be open to receiving as well as giving, and have patience. This is an extremely creative time for Jacob but it will not be a time of instant gratification and instant results.

The security of the ego is about to be challenged, but in this process the potential for creativity, development of crucial networks and supports, and the expression of long held internal talents are emerging. This is a process not to be rushed, so Jacob will have to curb some of his expectations. Have a happy birthday and Saturn’s return bring a new lens to see the potential that awaits.

Moonlight Tarot’s Question Corner: Mystical Answers to Mundane Inquiries

By Angela Kaufman, Moonlight Tarot LLC

September harkens the transition from summer to fall and many reflect on the harvest of their labor at this time. This months’ Querent is troubled by the fear that her harvest will be meager this year as a career transition has resulted in earnings that fall short of past expectations. Her dilemma is expressed through her question; “what is my financial outlook and what can I do to make the most of what I have during this time?” An interesting question indeed as Tarot can provide insight into situations and patterns the Querent can be aware of or take advantage of, and yet it must be emphasized that these services are no substitution for financial advisement. Likewise Tarot pinpoints matters of spiritual nature so while there are ways to indicate gains, losses and general advice it should be noted there is no card that will distinguish “Money Market Accounts” from “Stock Market” or “Pay off the Credit Card”….perhaps this would make for an interesting oracle if any of the readership chooses to create a deck solely focused on financial matters….(not a bad idea come to think of it!) For the time being, this month’s Querent who we will call Judy will be guided in terms of what she needs to know to navigate her financial needs on a limited income.

The Ace of Hearts, aka The Leaper

Three cards are drawn as usual- and this reading also yields a Leaper- an additional card whose kamikaze flight from the deck during shuffling indicates the cards are ready to tell their tale. The Leaper for Judy is the Ace of Hearts. A hopeful sign, as this card indicates happiness and brings a feeling of blessing and hope to Judy’s situation. While it is not an indicator of work or money specifically it connotes that Judy’s situation has a happy ending.

The Six of Hearts is the first card of Judy’s reading. It connotes a pleasant and hopeful resolution to Judy’s problem based on the help or assistance of someone from Judy’s past- either a childhood friend or a past resource or outlet that has not been acknowledged or realized yet. Judy should remain receptive to the advice of a trusted friend, someone who will help Judy connect to solutions and resources that have otherwise not been considered. It also suggests financial growth and security with the guidance and assistance of a significant other whose income contributes to financial stability. In terms of protecting current assets it may be prudent at this time for Judy to review all accounts and assets, including some held from childhood or from earlier in life- a key seems to be finding a solution in the past, attaining security through tapping a resource from Judy’s heritage, family or past. The number six may be significant as well- increments of 600 or 6,000 dollars. Judy would do well to blend her plans with those of a significant other or trusted friend- being open to feedback but also maintaining her original plans- this solution seems to be a blend of her objectives with the suggestions from this person from her past. One thing seems indicated in this reading- it does not appear Judy will face a loss. It appears likely her finances will grow and remain protected through her initiative and the guidance of another- it does not seem likely she will face unforeseen catastrophe that would threaten her current savings.

The center card is the Knave of Bells, and this is in fact the only of these three (plus Leaper, making four) cards that directly connotes finances and work. It suggests new opportunities for growth and guidance from a young person who is business or money minded. This does not suggest staggering growth, rather it suggests early groundwork being laid for financial development at a slow and steady pace. Regardless it is not suggesting loss or retraction of savings, while earning potential may have slowed it seems stability and security are not going to be an issue. There does not seem to be need to panic. It is likely that Judy will be assisted by the advice of a person who is in training or early in their career- with sound business perspective and an ability to be flexible, open, creative, but also with a firm grasp of financial matters. It is also likely that a business proposal brought to Judy’s attention can assist her in establishing a new income source, a secondary stream of income in its early development.

The final card in this reading is the Three of Hearts, another card depicting emotional satisfaction. It seems that expansion of Judy’s current financial foundation will likely arise through collaboration with others especially through three channels- three investments, three opportunities to generate income. It also is highly likely that celebrations, friends, and family will assist in generating this income- work in entertainment, family or party events, income gained through family donations or celebratory gifts. These seem to be positive, growth based opportunities, not tragedies such as inheritances or lawsuits. Most importantly the common message through all these cards is that of expansion, success, and happiness, not of loss, hardship or financial turmoil. Through careful consideration and openness to the views of those around her, Judy will be given opportunities to make what she has last as well as to generate new sources of financial growth at a slow and steady rate. She will not likely have to contend with catastrophic losses or continued financial or even emotional downfalls at this time.

Best of luck to Judy in all of her endeavors and remember that regardless of where you are reading this article all readings are for entertainment purposes in accordance with NYS law.
