A New Science of the Paranormal

It’s time for all my paranormal peeps to step up their game, and Lawrence LeShan is just the man to school you.

I recently finished reading LeShan’s new book “A New Science of the Paranormal” and I have to tell you, I was blown away. Why wouldn’t I be? He has twenty or so books published and he has been in the psi studying game since before I was born! This guy has probably forgotten more about psychic phenomena than I, or you for that matter, will ever know. Now LeShan is here to tell us all how to grow up and start studying it like the big boys, and let me tell you, it’s simple and hard, all at the same time.

LeShan calls for an entire reevaluation as to how we look at science, and from this new perspective shows you how to apply it to studying psychic phenomena as a science. Let’s be clear here, LeShan isn’t telling us to forget about science, he asks you to really think about how science and scientific discovery work. Amongst many persuasive arguments, one suggestion is using the example of how physicists and mathematicians have accepted the idea that you have to change the system of reality you are using if you wish to solve certain problems as an approach to take in psychical research.

“A New Science of the Paranormal” is a fascinating read. LeShan uses passion and logic, and by the end of the book you find yourself asking, how can I help make this happen?

Pukwudgies: Myth or Monster

By Christopher Balzano
(originally appeared on Massachusetts Paranormal Crossroads website; used with permission)

In the Southeastern corner of Massachusetts lies Bristol County, an area known locally as the most haunted place in New England. The energy that sleeps there has been rumored to cause haunted schools, ghostly armies and unexplained suicides and murders. Forested areas of the county have long been known to contain a litany of unexplained animals, from Bigfoot and thunderbirds to large snakes and odd bear-like monsters. For the past forty years cults have flocked there, and their activities, often criminal, have filled the blotters of local law enforcement. Of all the unknown horrors that live in Bristol County, the most feared is not a animal or a ghost or the members of Satanic cults that walk the forests, but a demon only two feet high, and if the history of the area represents the history of our America society, these Pukwudgies are the gatekeepers of our darker side.

The Pukwudgies have haunted the forests of Massachusetts since before the first European Settlers ever thought about setting out for a new land. For centuries they tormented the local Native Americans and crept their way into their creation myths and oral history. They could easily be passed of as legend, and in fact, their physical description is much like mythological creatures from other cultures in other times. The difference is these demons jumped from the page and evolved as the people around them changed, changing from reluctant helpers to evil tormentors. The difference is these demons are still seen by people today.

Most cultures’ mythology has some reference to small monsters that have a strained relationship with humans. In many ways it makes sense. While large monsters have their place in our fears, diminutive creatures find their way into the shadows of our rooms and under our beds. Their names and nature change, but there are always common threads that link them together. Some are called monsters and roam the land looking for human food and kidnapping anyone they can find. Other are called demons, foul spirits that feed of the negative and expose the sins of man. When referring to one, its classification gets blurred and these two words become interchangeable, perhaps showing us how closely associated these monsters are with evil.

Veterans returning home after World War II talked of gremlins tearing apart their planes or getting into jeep engines and causing havoc. The Hindus speak of the Rakshasas or the “Night Wander” who eats human skin and jumps into the dead to possess them. Africans tell stories about the Eloko who lure people with beautiful music only to devour them after they have been bewitched with an ever expanding jaw.

Although passed off as works of fiction and imagination, trolls and dwarfs have existed in people’s fears for centuries. They have become lovable and noble now, but the original stories recorded of these monsters are anything but fairy tales with happy endings. Trolls were notorious for ambushing travelers and destroying whole families on a whim. While some are described as giants with humps and one eye, many older cultures, especially in Scandinavia, described the being as the size of a plump child.

Dwarfs have always been small and their manners much better, but the end result seems to be the same. Like the troll, they are known as metal and stone workers, but unlike their flesh-eating counterparts, dwarves seem to avoid human contact. While they would prefer to be left alone, if impeded upon their work, they become like caged dogs. One variation of the dwarf is the Tommy-Knocker who lives in mine shafts and is sometimes said to be the ghost of miners who have perished in the line of duty and are doomed to work for eternity. They are known to cause cave-ins and fires in the shafts.

Perhaps the most famous of the small nightmare are seen by the Irish. Fairies patrol the roads in Ireland causing problems for any traveler who strays from the path. They live in hills or mounds and dance around fires. If a human comes across their mound or sees their dancing, they are caught and held captive. Even the beloved leprechaun was once a malicious spirit before he was Americanized and transformed into the gold keeper he is today.

Exposure to nature seems to feed these tales, and the more a society depends on the earth for its needs, and the closer the relationship a people have with the natural world around them, the more these stories pop up. In this country, the people the first settlers found had a close, if not friendly, view of small dangers around them. The Cherokee have a mirror image demon known as the Yunwi Djunsti, or little people, that look and talk like Cherokee but are only a few feet high and have long hair that touches the ground. Although most people cannot see them, they are known to throw objects, trip up hunters and abduct people who wander off. In Canada they are known as Mennegishi and look much like the classic alien grey.

The Wampanoag Nation, the dominant Native America tribe in Massachusetts and Southern New England, had a monster who still dominates the landscape they once roamed. The Pukwudgie made its first appearance in the oral folklore of the people of Cape Cod, but recent sightings have forced people to rethink this mythological creature. Standing between two and three feet tall, the Pukwudgie looks much like our modern idea of a troll. His features mirror those of the Native American in the area, but the nose, fingers and ears are enlarged and the skin is described as being grey and or washed-out, smooth and at times has been known to glow.

What makes these monsters dangerous is the multitude of magical abilities they use to torment and manipulate people. They can appear and disappear at will and are said to be able to transform into other animals. They have possession of magical, poison arrows that can kill and can create fire at will. They seem to often be related to a tall dark figure, often referred to in modern times and shadow people. In turn the Pukwudgies control Tei-Pai-Wankas which are believed to be the souls of Native Americans they have killed. They use these lights to entice new victims in the woods so they may kidnap or kill them. In European folklore these balls of energy are know as Will-o-the-Wisps and are said to accompany many paranormal occurrences. Modern paranormal investigators call them orbs, and catching one on film is the gold standard of field research.

Legends of the Pukwudgie began in connection to Maushop, a creation giant believed by the Wampanoag to have created most of Cape Cod. He was beloved by the people, and the Pukwudgies were jealous of the affection the Natives had for him. They tried to help the Wampanoag, but their efforts always backfired until they eventually decided to torment them instead. They became mischievous and aggravated the Natives until they asked Quant, Maushop’s wife, for help. Maushop collected as many as he could. He shook them until they were confused and tossed them around New England. Some died, but others landed, regained their minds and made their way back to Massachusetts.

Satisfied he had done his job and pleased his wife, Maushop went away for a while. In his absence, the Pukwudgies had returned. They again changed their relationship with the Wampanoags. They were no longer a nuisance, but began kidnapping children, burning villages and forcing the Wampanoag deep into the woods and killing them. Quant again stepped in, but Maushop, being very lazy, sent his five sons to fix the problem. The Pukwudgies lured them into deep grass and shop them dead with magic arrows. Enraged, Quant and Maushop attack as many as they can find and crush them, but many escape and scatter throughout New England again. The Pukwudgies regroup and trick Maushop into the water and shoot him with their arrows. Some legends say they killed him while other claim he became discouraged and depressed about the death of his sons, but Maushop disappears from the Wampanoags mythology.

Pukwudgies have been seen at the Ledge in Freetown, Massachusetts.

The Pukwudgies remained however, but something odd happens. The timing of the tales of the monster are a map through the history of the Native Americans relationship with the European settlers. The death of the five sons lines up with the very first settlers, and the flight of Maushop is told along side the changing of attitudes about the new neighbors. The Pukwudgies, always seen in a negative light, become the foot soldiers of the Devil, which may explain their modern connection to shadow people. As more Native Americans began to convert to Christianity, their myths evolved, until the Pukwudgies were responsible for the evil in the village, and the hand of Satan on the tribe.

People who spend time in the forest of New England will tell you Pukwudgies are not symbols, but a real horror that still stalks people. They continue to see them, and as the world develops around them, the monsters remain unchanged and as dark as ever.

Joan was walking her dog through the state forest in Freetown, Massachusetts, on a cold Saturday morning in April when she saw the monster. As she and her dog, Sid, walked down the path, Sid became anxious and strayed a few feet into the woods. Joan followed him in, and stopped short. Her dog was lying completely flat in the leaves, and on a rock ten feet away was a Pukwudgie. She described him as looking like what she would describe as a troll; two feet high with pale gray skin and hair on his arms and the top of his head. The monster seemed to have no clothes, but it was difficult to tell because his stomach hung over his waist, almost touching his knees. His eyes were a deep green, and he had large lips and a long, almost canine nose.

The Pukwudgie stood watching her, staring straight at her with no expression, almost like it was stunned to see her. Joan froze and remembers thinking the air in her lungs had been pushed out. Sid finally came to and ran back towards the trial, dragging Joan who was still holding the leash tightly.

Although the whole exchange took less than thirty seconds, it remains with Joan ten years later. She has not gone back to the forest, but feels that might not be enough. Three times since the event she has woken up to find the demon looking in on her. It has never attacked her or spoken to her, she has merely seen it looking through her bedroom window, staying just long enough for her to notice him. All three times she claims she was fully awake and could move if she had to.

Another man in Framingham, Massachusetts had a experience that forced him to remain away from the woods. Tim was in a forest when he saw a bright orb in front of him. Having investigated the paranormal he was excited and tried to snap a photo with his digital camera. The ball of light disappeared and reappeared a few feet further into the woods. Tim followed, losing the spirit several times before he realized he had traveled more than thirty feet off the path into a thickly wooded area. He became scared and slowly made his way back to the path, only to find a two foot man standing there, walking towards him. He turned and ran, and looking back saw the figure move back into the woods.

Tim reported that what he saw had walked upright and had used its arms to push something aside when he fled to the forest. He had moved with a slight limp, but “like a human”.

The second time Tom saw the Pukwudgies was a few years later in a parking lot near the same forest. He was listening to the radio at almost a whisper and checking his rear view mirror for the friend he was waiting for when he saw the same small figure of a man. Every detail was identical, and the Pukwudgie just stood there watching him. The car turned on by itself and his radio began to get louder. Tim pulled out of the parking lot and took the long way home to try and stop his hands from shaking.

Although the monster seemed content to only frighten Joan and Tim, there are still physical attacks happening. Several people have been assaulted and one person came down with a mysterious illness after seeing them in a cemetery in New Hampshire. Another woman suffered scratches on her arm after following an orb in a forest in Taunton, Massachusetts.

The most disturbing reoccurring attacks might be taking place at the Pukwudgies favorite hunting ground. In the Freetown State Forest there is an hundred foot cliff overlooking a quarry known as the Ledge. There have been many hauntings at this sight, but the most frequent experience is an overwhelming feeling to jump to the rocks and water below. In the folklore of the Wampanoag, the Pukwudgies were known to lure people to cliffs and push them off to their death. There have been several unexplained suicides at the Ledge, often by people who had no signs of depression or mental disease before entering the forest.

Notes from the Bathroom

Oh, the posts I had lined up for this week, but the unthinkable happened. For the first time in, I swear this is true, 20 years I was laid up with the stomach flu. Not the oh my tummy is a little upset and I have a fever kind of flu, the one where I now know all the subtle nuances that my bathroom has to offer kind of stomach flu. When lying on your bathroom floor you discover odd things like, I should probably dust the ceiling vent and clean the overhang of my sink. Now that I’m up, and almost running, let me tell you about what could have, should have, would have been if not for this vile, evil flu.

First off, my awesome plans of seeing Watchmen at the IMAX on opening day fell apart. I wasn’t sure I was going to write about seeing it, but since I had recently shared with you my feelings about the comic it seemed like a possibility. As of right now I still haven’t seen it, sigh.

I also had planned to watch my review copy of “2012: Science or Superstition” that the cool folks at Disinfo.com sent me. This is the first time I have been given a DVD to review and was looking forward to writing something impressive about it in a timely fashion. Obviously, not going to happen while sick.

Lastly, I had meant to share this information sooner. My friend Deborah Collard of the North-Eastern Alabama Paranormal Society is in the running to be cast in a new Discovery Channel show called “The Gray Area”, which is about unexplained phenomena. Deborah and all the folks over at NAPS have been big supporters of The Magical Buffet and me and so I would like to encourage my readers to take a few minutes of time to log in and vote for her! Click here to vote!

As anyone who has been sick knows, it takes a while to crawl back up to normality. However I promise you, I’ll get there.

We have so much cool stuff coming up here at The Magical Buffet! Let’s see: I’ve got a few interviews I think you’re going to really love, The Creative Whack Company gave me a new fidget to try out, and more!

Also remember, if you have a My Space profile you can find us on My Space and be our friend! If you use Facebook you can search The Magical Buffet and become our fan! Show us some love!

Abbey Ghost Hunters: Danby Castle Investigation

Danby Castle is believed to have been built in the 11th century on high ground at Castleton by the de Brus family who also built Skelton Castle. Stone from the first Danby Castle was used at the beginning of the 14th Century to construct the present palatial castle. It was unusual in having a projecting tower in each corner.

Present from AGH were, Mark, Angie, Tracey, Jazz and Dave

10:00pm We arrived at the Castle and made our way to one the of the two rooms that is still roofed and is known as the jury room, this is because the other room next to it, is a court room. Not their original use but today the two rooms are used by the Danby Court Leet. We unloaded our equipment into the room, and then went for a look around the impressive larger than expected castle. The Castle does not look that big from a distance or even close up, it is only until you the grounds itself that you see how big and most impressive it is.

10:30pm We went for a quick walk around to see if Angie could pick anything up straight away, near the car park on one side of the enclosed barn, she had sensed a lady called Mary who worked here as a maid, she feels she comes here a lot in visitation, as we entered into an open area the other side of the enclosed barn she sensed a little boy comes around here, he is not here yet but she can feel his energy, we went through a doorway into what appeared to be the Hall. Angie whispers to me ” there’s lots of people in here and they will watch us tonight”. We then went through another doorway which led into a small room and into the kitchen.

11:00pm Mark went for a walk around with Jazz and Dave to show them the Castle grounds and the different rooms there where, before we went for a drink.

00:00am (midnight) As we left the Court room to go down the stairs, Mark noticed on one of the walls in a window stood what looked like a figure, it then appeared to move away from the window and then return. After watching for a few minutes to see if something may have been casting what may have been some kind of reflection, the figure then moved to the other side of the window before returning. The others by now had seen Mark observing this and they too had started to watch it. We went over to where the window was to get a closer look and to see if there was anything that could have been causing this, it soon became clear that it could not have been anything else other than a figure. The window was in a room we believe may have been the Hall. We all agreed it only appeared to be the dark shape of a figure, and Mark believed the shape to be female, keeping this to himself to see if anyone else said the same, but no one did. Angie then as she still watched the window turned and said “she is residual, and is just walking back and forth as if pacing and waiting for someone”, this had Mark intrigued and said to Angie “who said it was a woman”, Angie turned and said she stands there a lot, a female is what I am sensing. Then Jazz and Tracey both turn and say they feel as if we are in a crowded room and it is like we are being watched by many. This is what Angie had said to me “there’s lots of people in here and they will watch us tonight”. We moved into the Kitchen to have a quick look around but Angie and Tracey wanted to be on the other side of the wall. We moved back through the hall and around to the outside of the kitchen. As we stood by the wall Everyone except Mark heard what they described as mans gruff, but no one was about. As we looked up to the top of the wall above the kitchen Mark and Tracey saw a small figure, Dave had seen something move but said it was too quick for him to make out what it was, Angie had already moved much closer to the wall and stared straight up at the same area, we then noticed she was stood at the base of some stairs that led to where we had seen the small figure. Then as she started onto the stairs both Angie and Tracey said “James” at the exact same time, they both then described a small boy Dressed in Blue, We stayed for a while but nothing else occurred.

00:30am We went into the Jury room and set up a camcorder, as Angie could sense someone has been in here whilst we were outside and that we would get someone in here again SOON. As we had pulled up earlier in the car park Angie had seen a small boy peering out of the window in this room, so we set up the camera in the far corner with a wide angled lens attached. In the room both Jazz and Angie heard what they sounded like someone dragging their nails across the big table. Then Angie and Tracey left the room, Mark turned to look in the corner just behind the camcorder and saw what he believed was a shadow, and took several photos in quick succession, Jazz turned to him and said I am drawn to that corner too, Mark asked him had he seen anything but he hadn’t, he was just drawn there as if someone would appear. Angie and Tracey re entered the room after going to check what they thought sounded like footsteps, Angie went straight to the corner and says “she feels like she is shaking, not in fear or through nerves, but as if in anger” Jazz starts to feel headachy! we took turns at standing in the corner and I (Mark) felt nothing but Jazz felt as if his chest was tight an jittery, Dave felt some palpitations and whilst he explained this he sounded very short of breathe. We decided to place a sensor light in the corner, facing into the corner itself, after it had been there for about five minutes and we had moved to the other end of the room, the light came on. Although none of us seen anything move passed it. We decided it may be worth trying some glass divination in this room.

01:15am Because of what we had been hearing and seeing, we had decided to try some glass divination, so we all sat at the table in the room. Angie felt there was now a couple of spirits in the room but felt we may not get much response as they appeared confused by our presence, we decided to try anyway to see if we could build some confidence with the spirits that were present. As we sat and placed our fingers on the glass, Angie says “In memory of Margaret” Mark turns to Angie and said he had the name Margaret in his mind at that time, we sat for a bit whilst Angie tried to make sense of the statement but she was unable to gain any information regarding it. Tracey and Mark who sat facing each other both suddenly felt an urge of emotional sadness and an intense pain in the left side, Angie says “No husband, Margaret had no Husband, (there is a pause, then) sorry Lady Margaret, she is stood near the fireplace dressed almost in Tudor Style clothing, she has some kind of veil over her face” Both Mark and Tracey are still getting the pain in the left side and it seems to intensify as Angie says Margaret, as if some kind of confirmation that the name means something. Angie then says “I feel this Lady walks the corridor as well as this room”. there is another short pause when Angie says “Robert” and looks behind Jazz who complains of sharp pains in his back at that time. Angie feels 18th Century character she asks him “would you like to join us Robert” everyone heard a gruff “Huh” sound, Angie feels a pain in the head with this man and this had something to do with his death, she feels he died outside on what is now the lane. She feels he may have been struck about the head, as she says he is walking around the table. Mark felt someone bang into his chair, and it moved. Tracey has an image of a man who has a moustache and is holding a pipe. Angie then senses a young girl Emma Jane she is one of two little girls who lived here. Things suddenly went very quiet and we ended the seance.

01:50am We went to the Barn to see if anything could be picked up in here, Angie had already sensed a woman passing through the room, and was intrigued as to who she was. We stood around for a short while to see if anyone got any unusual feelings of any kind. We decided to try some glass divination in this room, and as we checked the thermometer we could now see it had dropped to 0.1ºc. We also decided to set up the sensor light in here and took E.M.F readings, to which we got none. Angie says she can sense someone in the room, and she feels a real calmness with this person, she felt she was observing us and found our attire unusual, we tried communicating with her, using the glass, but got no responses. Angie felt this woman was not ready to come forward at this time, as she was still trying to work out what our intentions where. We then stood in the room discussing how everyone felt, and all agreed there was a real calmness in here. Angie said she felt the spirit in here was and could be Tactile (able to touch us), Then as she talked some more and gave us the name Betty, she felt someone touch her back. Mark asks “Roger, are you here Roger” he asked this as Angie was standing next to him and Mark thought Angie had whispered Roger into his ear, but it was not Angie! Mark was adamant he heard a woman’s voice whisper the name into his ear. Nothing else happened after that, so we decided to move to another area.

02:25 We made our way to the Stables. Again Angie could sense a female presence, it was a different one to the others she had sensed in other parts. Angie says this woman was accused of being a witch, she described as being roughly just short of 4 foot, and she had a dirty complexion and had no footwear at all, her hair was very messy. She feels she was brought here and then taken into another room that was adjoined. There is only one door in and out of this room, but there are signs another door was once here. As we stood in this room Angie said she again felt as though she had been touched, she could feel her hood on her coat being tugged, she felt it was the little woman. Tracey and Jazz who had moved to another part of the room both felt in the same area, an overwhelming horrible feeling in their stomachs. They both complained they felt really sick and had to move away from that particular spot. Upon moving only 3 foot away they both said the feeling had gone, Jazz stepped back into the area and immediately felt it again. After a short period of not getting anything else, Angie said she felt a settlement once stood on this same ground, long before the Castle was built. And she felt we were stood on what was a burial ground.

03:00 We went for a break.

03:30 We went to the cellar, an area some people believe was once a dungeon. I asked each of the team members what they felt this area may have been, but no one mentioned Dungeon. In fact there was a sensing from each member of a wine cellar instead. It is believed that the room above, the Court room was originally sleeping quarters for the owners, and the room below (the room we were in) was in fact the wine cellar. No one sensed anything in this room and we left after 30 minutes.

04:00am We all agreed to end the night.

Final thought: For myself the Castle proved most interesting as I had seen more than most locations we have visited. The team felt overall it is an active place. And everyone wants to go back to see if we can unravel its secrets!! Also research is proving a little difficult for this Investigation regarding names.

NNYPRS Post Investigation Report

Here it is, another actual final report from a real paranormal investigation group! This one is particularly fun because it’s from the Northern New York Paranormal Research Society’s investigation of the Plattsburgh, NY Air Force Base gymnasium. That’s right folks, the same investigation I went with them on, the same one I wrote about just the other day. I thought you guys might enjoy a little compare and contrast, so refresh your memories by reading my write up about the investigation. Then continue on to the NNYPRS final report.

Post-Investigative Report

Client: Plattsburgh Air Force Base, Old Gym, Plattsburgh, NY
Date: 10/11/08
Referred by: Erin Connors, WPTZ Channel 5 News

History: The Gym was built in 1933 and opened in 1934. At the time it was the largest building in all of Plattsburgh. It had two sections, the main gym and a theater. The gym had bleachers and a basketball court upstairs with changing rooms, a weight room and a bowling alley in the basement. The theater section, although attached, technically had a separate entrance. Under the stage, was a holding area for actors and actresses that would get to the stage by a spiral staircase in the back corner of stage left. Sometime in the 1950’s, 2 handball courts were put in where the theater seats were. Then, it is believed that in the 70’s or 80’s 2 more racquetball courts were installed in the rest of the theater’s seating area.

Reported Activity: People claim that the area under the stage was a morgue for mangled body parts at one time. People have claimed to hear banging and screaming coming from this area. Workers have reported hearing many sounds throughout the building when they believed they were alone. Sounds include whistling, conversations, banging, weights clanging, and footsteps. There are two reported visual phenomenon. The first was a report of seeing what was believed to be a soldier walking on the indoor track on the second floor. The other visual report happened in the weight room. A former employee that we spoke to claimed to see a man walk past the weight room in the hallway. He saw this in a mirror. He said later it happened again, the opposite way.

Personal Experiences:
Brian heard what sounded like voices coming through a door, from an office that was unoccupied. However, with the acoustics and other various factors, it is very possible it was not paranormal. Other than this, no other personal experiences occurred.

Debunked:
This building never housed a morgue of any type. We were able to debunk almost every audible report. The acoustics of the building were incredible. Someone can be outside whistling, talking in a normal voice, and it could be heard clearly up on the track and on the basketball court, even with all windows closed. Also, the sounds of voices, heating duct “bangs”, lockers closing, weights slamming from downstairs would all carry extremely well to the main floor area, as well as in the main office. The number of reflective surfaces in the areas where apparitions have been spotted could very easily create an image that, in an old, supposedly haunted building would appear to be ghosts. In the weight room area, the report of looking at the mirror and seeing someone pass in the hallway could very easily be explained by the distortion of the particular mirror, the witness admitting there were people in the room across the hallway, and reflections of other mirrors in that general vicinity.

Initial Conclusion: It is the general consensus of NNYPRS that all stories surrounding this property are of an “urban legend” variety, or the result of the minds ability to perceive a sound to be paranormal when in a large, “spooky”, supposedly haunted building when you are relatively alone. No data was acquired that could be considered paranormal in nature. Only one reliable source could be found that had claimed to experience a paranormal event. NNYPRS was able to find natural explanations to all of his reports. Any other report of activity is of the “friend of a friend” variety, and not able to be substantiated.

Hey folks, if you enjoyed their report, come out to P3 and meet the team! P3 is on Sunday October 26, 2008 from 1-6 p.m. in Plattsburgh, NY. It’s free to attend.

Rebecca’s First Paranormal Investigation…

…or How I Spent My Saturday Night.

After a long, hard week Jim and I hit the road north. Our destination was Plattsburgh, NY. We were heading north for our first paranormal investigation, thanks to the invite we received from our friend Merrill, President of the Northern New York Paranormal Research Society. That evening we would all be checking out the Plattsburgh Air Force Base gymnasium…but first, Ponderosa and some planning.

There were nine of us going on the investigation. All of them were NNYPRS team members except for Jim and me. As usual with the NNYPRS, we first had to eat, drink (non alcoholic beverages), and be merry, before we could settle in for some shoptalk.

Merrill gave us the haunting low down on the gym we were heading to after dinner. Primarily people reported hearing noises while alone in the building. Some reported voices, some heard knocking or banging, and others whistling. A source confided to Merrill that while lifting weights, with his back to the door and facing the mirror, he saw a man walk by the door in each direction. Both times the source went out to find the man, but could not locate him. In addition, there was a brief bit found on line about a man seeing a soldier on the basketball court. While eating dessert, we discussed all the basic, non-paranormal things that could cause many of these things, including old heating systems, water pipes, etc.

When we arrived at the Air Force Base gymnasium, we got to meet Erin Connors of WPTZ Channel 5 News and her cameraman. Yes, we had a television crew there with us. Of course we had known about this before hand, what Jim and I had not realized was that they were there for everything. Jim and I assumed they would talk to Merrill and Dave, the President and Vice President of NNYPRS respectively and not particularly care about the rest of us. Um, we were wrong. And if you catch the segment, there is a good chance you’ll get to see me, in sweat pants and a sweatshirt with my crappy who cares ponytail. Lovely.

Now to work. First, we got a tour of the facility. This place was a maze of rooms! Right away we all noticed lots of old pipes, etc. that could easily cause knocking sounds. Also, we all seemed certain this place was designed to echo and carry sound, another possibility for hearing voices. While in the weight room, a cluster of us took some time to study the weight bench that had the door behind it. This would be where the person who saw the man walk by would have been. Thanks to ample mirrors (which for the record, make you look fat!) and some windows, we could imagine picking up something from outside to perhaps explain the man. Some of the NNYPRS went about setting up home base, which involved putting up some stationary cameras that fed into a recorder that also allowed us to view the four camera views at the same time. While that was being done, two groups of three people each went around to get base readings of all the rooms we would be going in. I got to be EMF girl, with my very own electromagnetic field reader. I was with Jim, who got to be room temperature guy, and Dave, the Vice President, also known as EMF guy and guy who makes sure Jim and I do what we’re supposed to guy. None of us noted anything unusual about the rooms we examined. Temperatures were constant, EMF readings were consistent, and my readings matched Dave’s.

After all of the set up work was done and we completed our initial readings and notes on the location, two groups of three went off in search of the paranormal. Jim and I got the best job, along with NNYPRS team member Sarah, the three of us got to watch the monitor at home base. After all the hiking around of the tour and taking base readings, sitting around and watching others work seemed like the best plan. None of us noted anything unusual and when the teams reported in, they had not found anything either.

However, we all noticed that sounds and voices carried a long distance in the building. Voices could be heard through walls, down hallways, and on different floors of the building. Later, three of us went outside the building and walked all the way around talking, whistling, and making assorted sounds. Everyone inside could hear us, often times clearly. In addition, people threw balls in the racket ball and handball courts, and opened and closed lockers. All of those noises could be heard throughout the building quite clearly. At this point, we decided mundane things could easily explain any report of noise.

We did not see or hear anything that appeared to be paranormal. One NNYPRS team member thought he had heard some voices coming from behind a closed door to an empty room, but although he couldn’t explain for certain where the sounds came from, he didn’t feel they were necessarily paranormal in origin. The only thing we could not explain was the soldier sighting, but since the rumor was light on details, I for one, am not overly concerned about a haunted gymnasium.

Around 11p.m. Jim and I hopped in the car and started our two and a half hour drive home. At 1:30, I collapsed into bed and essentially slept my Sunday away.

My work was done, but for the NNYPRS, there are still hours of video and audio tape to review, along with dozens of photos to be examined before they can call it case closed. For me, not burdened by having to review notes, etc. I feel I can quote my boys at Mythbusters when I say, Plattsburgh Air Force Base Gymnasium haunting? Busted.

Mopaditis

What happens to us when we die is, in my opinion, one of those questions that we can never truly answer. There’s only one way to get your answer, and trust me, it’s a killer. (Insert rim shot here.) The way people have answered this question has influenced religion, philosophy, and entire cultures. It explains the fascination with the study of the paranormal; it defines the Spiritualist faith. What happens to us after we die is a multimillion-dollar industry, and an intimate puzzle for each human to solve for themselves. There’s the potential for ghosts, poltergeists, spirits, angels, and more. For the Aborigines, there are the mopaditis.

These are the spirits of the dead. They are incorporeal and invisible in daylight. Mopaditis are white in the light of the moon and black in the dark. It is said they still look just like a human, but given their visual temperament, I think it would be hard to say if you actually saw one. A human who encounters a mopaditis will at best experience clammy hands and their hair standing on end, at worst paralysis.

There is a connection between the mopaditis and black cockatoos. A flock of black cockatoos escorts the mopaditis back to its birthplace, all the while crying out, to announce the spirit’s arrival.

Not being from Australia, let alone one of their Aboriginal people, I cannot tell you more, I don’t know it to tell. And the more I think about it, good. The mopaditis are their answer to the question, not mine.

LINCOLN THEATER INVESTIGATION
October 27th, 2007

GRS Members Present: Dave Guss, Nancy Guss, Stan Suho, Jim Graczyk, Lisa Krick, Joseph Tito, Joey Tito, Jason Tito, Jerry Lutz, Art Schramm, and Dale Kaczmarek.

Jim Graczyk: “Equipment: 35mm camera. For this investigation I was training new member Jerry Lutz along with assisting the GRS members who were investigating this huge building. My pictures did not have anything unusual to report. I didn’t physically encounter anything unusual in the building. I was pretty busy assisting the entire GRS team and also helping out the public who were invited to this instigation. From what was encountered and reported by other people in this building along with GRS members, I recommend going back to this place for a further investigation.”

Dave Guss: “The night we investigated the Theater I saw a man in the chair in the lower level near the bathrooms, He was very thin, had worn out striped painter’s pants on, dark shirt, long dark beard, flat black hair, eyes were dark and deep looking, I said hi to him and then entered men’s room, after leaving washroom the man was gone. I looked all over theater, at all the group for this person but found no one that looked like him. Also noticed black mass in hallway on second floor on the ceiling looking up from bottom of stairs on first floor lobby.”

Nancy Guss: “Unfortunately I was unable to capture any findings on video but did see some black shapes moving up in second floor mezzanine on the right that were not of human form and also had a feeling of someone sitting in the chair between men and ladies bathroom downstairs and also saw some shapes moving in front of stage curtains that also were not of human form. But nothing on film to verify this.”

Dale Kaczmarek: “I had several EMF readings in the corridor before the seating area and around 2 radiators. There was no reason to get EMF readings there as there was no electrical wiring although I’m sure they were grounded in some fashion. When I went back to recheck the readings, the first radiator showed no fluctuation at all and when I was about to check the second radiator Jason came up and informed me that he had just witnessed a strange shadow glide from the radiator into the theater seating area.

I also got many very high EMF readings in the basement near some conduit however when I turned the EMF meter 90 degrees to one side, nothing appeared. Then when I turned it back 90 to the same direction without elevating the height, the meter went into the red.

Later when I was monitoring the GEIST computer, I felt something hit me physically on the top of my head. I immediately looked up, thinking that someone was playing a joke on me and there was no one up in the mezzanine. Troy and John were seated in the front of the theater near the concession stand and confirmed that no was up there at the time. When I looked on the floor, I noticed that the object that had struck me was a dime which was lying on the carpeted floor.”

Lisa Krick: “I spent most of my time following Rosemary around … we sat in the balcony where nothing happened. Then Jim came and got us and we headed to the twisty stairs which lead to the catwalk … we went up them and walked around in a dusty little room beside the catwalk. Nothing up there … then we went to the basement … on the way down to the basement (I had an EMF meter) I noted that at the top of the basement stairs on the way down, the EMF registered 2.1 … I took a step back and tried it again … it went to 0.0 … we went downstairs and sat staring into a corner where funky black images (in a dark room, mind you) would flit back and forth across the floor and where the shadows in the corner elongated farther than they should have, but would stop whenever more people would come into the room

We headed back upstairs and at the top of the stairs I took another reading … 0.0 … then it was said that someone saw a shadow man in the balcony area, so we headed up there to do readings and to see exactly what lead to where … it was me, Jason, Joey, Dave, and I think Joe … as I was heading down the same path where the shadow man was seen, I was doing EMF readings … Jason was sitting in a seat with an empty seat beside him. The closer I got to him, the higher the device reading went … right beside him in the empty seat, there was a cold spot and when I put the EMF meter over it, it was consistently 2.4 … then I sat down in the seat and it went back to 0.0 … I stood up and walked around a bit and came back to that seat again for another reading, but the meter stayed at 0.0 … I think I must have either crushed the poor spirit or scared him away…

We decided to head back down to the basement one more time … on the way down, at the same spot as before on the landing at the top of the stairs, the EMF registered 4.1 … and then nothing … nothing to report in the basement, there were way too many people moving around and talking for anything to happen … so, we came back upstairs and at the top landing I got another 0.0 … I think that there was something each time which didn’t want us going down the stairs and seemed to be trying to use its energy to keep us upstairs … because I got high readings when we were heading downstairs, but always a 0.0 on the way upstairs … kinda weird …

So, that’s my part in the investigation … it’s a great old building which would bear further investigation when there aren’t a blue million people running hither and yon through it …”

Jerry Lutz: “As this was both my first time with GRS and participating in an investigation, everything was extremely interesting. The speakers were outstanding. As a bit of an amateur photographer myself, I found Dale’s talk especially interesting. As I was “hanging out” with the
GRS crew, I tried to just keep my mouth shut and soak up all of their experience and know-how, which is considerable. The Lincoln itself was amazing. The teamwork and friendliness of the GRS team was outstanding. I was impressed by the way they worked together and assisted each other so well. I look forward to joining the group again. I experienced nothing of note in the Lincoln itself.”

Stan Suho: “For starters I set up GEIST in the second balcony with 3 devices, Ghost Cam, and Microphone. There were reported EVPs in this area. When things were up and running, I made a walk through with the Cassette Recorder. Starting in the lower level below stage, I made a sweep of all the rooms. There were also other groups in this area doing EVP experiments. Then I made walk-throughs of the 1st and 2nd balconies. While seated in a chair on the 2nd balcony I asked several questions. On one question I received a whispered reply. It was unintelligible, but, appeared to respond to my question. I was alone in the balcony at the time. I made a WAV file for the GRS archives and will present it at the next meeting. Nothing unusual showed up on GEIST or Ghost Cam picture.”

Joey Tito: “I was going over footage I had taken at the Lincoln and I came across something out of the norm. It could be nothing, but while recording in the hallway on the main level my camera blacked out for a split second then returned back to recording. This is where Jason had seen the shadow person “walking” toward the doorway into the theater seating area. I can’t explain why the camera would malfunction like that while recording. There was no problem with the continuous footage of Rosemary’s or Dale’s lectures, and we were running off of power not battery. As I mentioned it could be nothing, but I thought it was worth bringing to your attention.”

Even a Stopped Clock is Right Twice a Day (You Can Decide Who the Clock in Question Is)

Look, it’s finally happening…the me and Billy Graham blog!  I almost bumped it again because of the “Evangelical Manifesto” press conference, but then I thought maybe I should actually read the manifesto before writing about it.

Perhaps it’s hard to imagine, but I recently came across some advice Rev. Billy Graham gave someone, and I kind of agree.  I know, spooky.

The Seattle Post-Intelligencer has an Ask Dr. Graham section, weird but true.  The column I read involved a Mrs. N.D. writing to Graham about her recently passed husband.  Her friend says she knows a psychic that can put her in touch with a loved one who has passed, and asks if there is any reason to not visit this psychic.

Well, Graham advises against it, of course.  First he explains that much of what passes for psychic activity is actually fraudulent, so she would be wasting her money.  Then he goes on to play the usual song of “Let no one be found among you who…is a medium or spiritist or who consults the dead.”  Party poopers.

If Mrs. N.D. had asked me, I would have also advised her against it.  I truly believe there are people with psychic abilities, but I also believe that the profession of psychic is a nebulous one that is rife for abuse.  When you visit most psychics they emphasize that it’s “for entertainment purposes only” and although I try not to make light of psychic readings I do try to put them into a perspective.  I would not let anyone’s opinion, regardless of how informed; blindly tell me how to live my life or what to believe.  Sure, a psychic may knows things that you don’t, but you know, my Mom does too and I don’t let her tell me what to do (much).  I view the advice of a psychic the same as I view advice from my Mom, well intended.

And then there is the matter of who she wanted to speak to.  That’s risky business in my book.  Penn Juliette kind of sums it up on his show “Penn & Teller: Bullshit”.  He talks about how when someone dies, you have the memories of them.  Some are good, some are bad, but they are all 100% true and real memories.  When you ask a psychic to communicate with that person after they passed, whatever that psychic tells you rewrites your history of that person and your relationship with them.  In my opinion, that’s too big of a chance to take.  I would talk to a psychic about my love life, or my career, but I don’t think I would trust a stranger with the memory of someone I loved.  Maybe that’s just me.

So, there you have it, Graham and I would actually have given this woman the same advice.  For different reasons, but still, we agreed.  Yep, definitely scary.

Ghost Walks

Have you ever heard of a “ghost walk”?  Sometimes they’re called “ghost tours” or “haunted tours”.  These are tours of areas that generally have some kind of history of haunting.  At their best, they are a blend of history, folklore, urban legend, and ghosts.  Of course, like any tour, quality can vary.  If you’re ever interested in trying one it’s always best to ask around and see if anyone has done the tour you’re considering or have a different one to recommend.  Other things to consider are how much walking is involved and the time of year.  If you hate the cold, like me, and the tour is on foot, avoid the fall season.  If you have problems with walking for long periods, it’s best to do a tour where they bus you from location to location.  A few minutes of research can help eliminate a lot of discomfort.

If you go to Google, or any other internet search engine, and type in the words ghost walk+your city, state you’ll be rewarded with lots of options.  Again, a little research goes a long way.  Keep in mind, these are for entertainment, and like any recreational endeavors, never spend more money than you’re comfortable with.  It’s hard to enjoy a walking tour, or pretty much any activity, if you’re going to spend the whole time worrying about whether the experience will live up to the money you spent.

Now I meant for this blog to just be about plugging a ghost tour in my hometown of Macomb, Illinois, but it has inadvertently become a bit of a primer about ghost tours in general.  I’ve never had the experience of doing A Midwest Haunting’s ghost walk, but I try to keep up with the group because they go to places that I remember from my youth.  They recently got some press in my hometown newspaper, The Macomb Journal, for adding locations at Western Illinois University, and starting their tour season in March.  If any of my readers from the area try the tour, I would love to hear about your experiences!
