It’s funny how this article from guest author Alice Diehl came about. As I sat at my desk I couldn’t ignore the fact that the holiday season was approaching. The Magical Buffet’s original format generally ignored acknowledging holidays, but with this new blog format it seemed wrong to not acknowledge some holidays as they approach or as they occur. So there it was, Christmas was coming. The question was, what was I going to do about it? Write some heart felt personal piece about Christmas, not going to happen. Talk about the Pagan roots to so many beloved Christmas features, it seems better informed and more talented writers would be addressing that else where. Honestly, I wanted to find the evil opposite of what most websites would do for a Christmas post. I found my mind wandering to some of the bizarre slasher movies set around the holidays. And the rest is history.
I’m friends with Alice from our interactions on the website MyNerdGirl.com (join us there!). I knew she was funny, intelligent, and more importantly a huge fan of horror movies. I asked her to compile a list of her favorite seasonal horror films and I’m pleased to share with you the results.

Those of you who are my friend on Facebook or follow The Magical Buffet on Twitter know that this past Sunday I got to see Anthony Bourdain from the television show “No Reservations” give a lecture and attend a meet and greet with the author/television personality. I wasn’t sure I was going to write about attending the event, but I’ve had so many people ask me what the event was like that I figured it would be easier to write about the whole experience here than to send out many, many emails. Seriously, you guys really want the Bourdain dish!

While catching up on my DVRed episodes of “The Daily Show” and “The Colbert Report” it was hard to miss that the big news, and comedy, of the day is the battle over healthcare reform. Obviously I have my opinions on the subject, and I understand and share many of the concerns of many Americans. Also, being the often mean-spirited person that I am, I’m greatly enjoying the comic stylings of Stewart and Colbert as they cover this issue. But then, on the August 10, 2009 episode of “The Colbert Report”, it happened.

I give a little credit, where credit is due…to Mr. Stephen Colbert.

BBC America cancelled their world news broadcast week day mornings and so this past week I’ve been left floundering around trying to figure out what morning news broadcast to watch to fill the void. So far I’ve tried “Morning Joe” on MSNBC and CNN’s “American Morning”. All I can say for these is that I REALLY miss my BBC World News. Anyway, after a week of trying these shows I have to say, I really agree with this guy.

Oh, the posts I had lined up for this week, but the unthinkable happened. For the first time in, I swear this is true, 20 years I was laid up with the stomach flu. Not the oh my tummy is a little upset and I have a fever kind of flu, the one where I now know all the subtle nuances that my bathroom has to offer kind of stomach flu. When lying on your bathroom floor you discover odd things like, I should probably dust the ceiling vent and clean the overhang of my sink. Now that I’m up, and almost running, let me tell you about what could have, should have, would have been if not for this vile, evil flu.

As most of you know, I’m a huge fan of Joss Wheadon, the creator of the television shows, “Buffy the Vampire Slayer”, “Angel”, and “Firefly.” During the writer”s strike he put together a mini-movie musical called “Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog”. Those of you that watched “Buffy” know that Wheadon can craft a clever musical thanks to the episode “Once More, With Feeling.” Once you see him do a musical set in the show “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” it’s not hard to imagine an entertaining musical about an aspiring super villain named Billy.
Needless to say, I really liked “Dr. Horrible”. Like, a lot. So much so, that I found the task of trying to sum up my affection for it in a clever blog post for The Magical Buffet to be an impossible undertaking. Thankfully, my friend Alex, who has his own webcomic “Completely Hypothetical”, was able to express my thoughts on this subject.
