The UnAmerican Struggle

I received a press release for a movie I thought some of you would want to keep an eye out for. It’s premiering at the San Antonio Film Festival on August 2, 2017.

“The UnAmerican Struggle” is a feature-length documentary that examines the resurgence of racism, misogyny, sexism, and xenophobia in America brought about by Donald Trump’s words and actions as a candidate, and now his policies as president.

1366 Films, an Atlanta-based production company, is excited to announce that the San Antonio Film Festival will host the world premiere of “The UnAmerican Struggle” on August 2nd. The city served as one of the film’s prime locations, given its exemplary celebration held each January that pays homage to MLK’s legacy of inclusion and civil rights.

“The UnAmerican Struggle” speaks to the dangers of remaining silent in the face of state-inspired hate and threats to civil rights. Bigotry unchecked ushers in greater abuses to civil rights, as evident through the recent attacks on the free press, the cornerstone of American democracy. As such, the documentary provides a voice to groups affected by the intolerance and bigotry sweeping the nation like a cancer.

“The UnAmerican Struggle” pays close attention to the struggle for equality from the perspective of Immigrants, Latinos, Muslims, Blacks, Women, and Transgender People. Seventeen experts representing the Southern Poverty Law Center, the National Diversity Council, the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) and local groups, such as Black Lives Matter, lent their voices in the film to help Americans better understand the fight to preserve America’s values of inclusion and civil liberties.

And you know I wouldn’t share this with you if I didn’t have a trailer:

Fairies, Pookas, and Changelings

I’m just going to say it, I love Varla Ventura. At this point I’m pretty much down for whatever she’s got going on. You may remember that I loved her previous books “Among the Mermaids: Facts, Myths, and Enchantments from the Sirens of the Sea” and “Banshees, Werewolves, Vampires and Other Creatures of the Night: Facts, Fictions, and First-Hand Accounts”, and I’m happy to say she has added another one to her series of creature collections.

“Fairies, Pookas, and Changelings: A Complete Guide to the Wild and Wicked Enchanted Realm” is Ventura’s latest. This book is fantastic. The author’s enthusiasm for the subject matter is obvious as she relates assorted tales from folklore. I always love how she unearths the more obscure creatures for these books. In this one you’ll find fairies, pookas, and changelings (of course). You’ll also read about bonga, trolls, coblyns, brownies, and even Rumpelstiltskin! There’s even a section on methods for entering the fairy realm, an action the author does not advice taking lightly.

As always Ventura pulls no punches, letting the darkness around the edges of the fay be on full display. There will be no Disney fairies found in this book. However if you’re looking for an interesting guide to all the creatures the Wild has to offer, “Fairies, Pookas, and Changelings” is the book for you.

Secret Medicines from Your Garden

This book has been out for over a year. Over a year! I even read it as soon as it came out, and yet it has taken all this time to share my thoughts on it. “Secret Medicines from Your Garden: Plants for Healing, Spirituality & Magic” by Ellen Evert Hopman is still in print, so it’s still worth sharing.

Reading “Secret Medicines from Your Garden” makes you feel like the author is personally leading you on a wilderness adventure. Hopman regales you with anecdotes from her spiritual journey and herbalism training. She doesn’t just tell you about herbs and their meanings and uses, she trains you to intuit a plants purpose. Not only do you learn about the physical natural world, but Hopman discusses plant spirits, herbal astrology, and more. Of course the book is filled with ways to use all that nature has to offer such as poultices, tinctures, and food.

I would say “Secret Medicines from Your Garden” is a surprisingly engaging book, and I dare say it’s my favorite of all of Ellen Evert Hopman’s books. (And considering how many great books she’s written, that’s saying something).

Battle for the Net Day of Action

Press release provided by Fight for the Future.

On July 12, 2017, websites, Internet users, and online communities will come together to sound the alarm about the FCC’s attack on net neutrality. Learn how you can join the protest and spread the word at https://www.battleforthenet.com/july12/.

Right now, new FCC Chairman and former Verizon lawyer Ajit Pai has a plan to destroy net neutrality and give big cable companies immense control over what we see and do online. If they get their way, the FCC will give companies like Comcast, Verizon, and AT&T control over what we can see and do on the Internet, with the power to slow down or block websites and charge apps and sites extra fees to reach an audience.

If we lose net neutrality, we could soon face an Internet where some of your favorite websites are forced into a slow lane online, while deep-pocketed companies who can afford expensive new “prioritization” fees have special fast lane access to Internet users – tilting the playing field in their favor.

But on July 12th, the Internet will come together to stop them. Websites, Internet users, and online communities will stand tall, and sound the alarm about the FCC’s attack on net neutrality.

The Battle for the Net campaign will provide tools for everyone to make it super easy for your friends, family, followers to take action. From the SOPA blackout to the Internet Slowdown, we’ve shown time and time again that when the Internet comes together, we can stop censorship and corruption. Now, we have to do it again!

Wicca: Plain & Simple

There are like a gazillion Wicca/Witchcraft for beginner type books out there. It’s a subject that is not in short supply of being discussed. So when I got a review copy of “Wicca, Plain & Simple” by Leanna Greenaway my response was, I’m sure this doesn’t suck, but I’m not going to bother. However I then noticed that it contained a foreword from Judika Illes, of whom I’m a huge fan, and I was like, guess I’m reading this book now! And so I read it.

And I was impressed. “Wicca, Plain & Simple” is a compact 127 pages, but I’ll be damned if Leanna Greenaway doesn’t manage to hit all the bases and more. Greenaway highlights the flexibility of Wicca and gives readers an amazing sampling of all the magical arts a modern Witch may have interest in, along with the variety of tools they’ll need. She manages to handily condense modern Wiccan ethics and philosophy and highlights them throughout the book.

Now, just like all the “Plain & Simple” books, this one has the tagline line, “The Only Book You’ll Ever Need”. This is absolutely not true. Once the beginning Witch reads “Wicca, Plain & Simple” they will have a road map to follow to pursue whatever Witchcraft paths they wish. “Wicca, Plain & Simple” by Leanna Greenaway is a great for those interested in starting the Wiccan journey, but certainly not necessary for the more established practitioner.
